    I’m a dfw native, and a ranger fan for about 45 years now. This team plays exciting baseball, and they put crooked numbers on the board with crazy regularity. I think most of us here in the metroplex knew they’d be much improved over the dumpster fire of the last 5-6 seasons, but I don’t know anybody (myself included) that expected them to get out of the gate like this. marcus semien has to be a top-3 MVP candidate 😁 he’s the league’s most underrated superstar. he’s gotten into 2 MVP races, once as a SS and again as a 2B … essentially positions that are near impossible to get into MVP races with bc they usually lack the offensive production that 1B, 3B and OF get. he also has the single season most HR by a 2B in MLB history and he single-handedly carried oakland to 97 wins and toronto to 91 during his MVP-caliber seasons. he’s also the biggest reason why texas is in the midst of a playoff race, leading the league’s best offense and acting as a mentor to the young players in his squad. his 175M contract set an umbrella for future 2B to benefit from … andres gimenez, nico hoerner and eventually guys like bryson stott and ozzie albies will secure future paydays bc guys like semien set the market for them.
    what a special player whom nobody talks about enough.

      @joshuawheelock8874 Год назад +1

      The vast majority of the things you mention, past performance, contract status etc. have literally 0 to do with MVP criteria in a given year. Ultimately he is tied for 24th in ops in mlb and 12th in the AL, while not playing a premium defensive position. Off top of head, judge, ohtani, trout, diaz, arozorena all well ahead of him

    • @justinllamas1
      @justinllamas1 Год назад +2

      @@joshuawheelock8874 well obv judge, trout and ohtani will always be the default top-3 as long as they’re playing in the AL and they’re healthy. I believe semien should all be there simply bc his offense at 2B is so rare to find and he currently is the leader of the team with the league’s best offense. at 2B u have altuve, semien and after that a steep drop off in power and in overall offensive production. that’s why I believe he should get a lot more praise and credit in the AL MVP race than what he is given. ppl forget he has already finished 3rd in the AL MVP race twice.

    • @joshuawheelock8874
      @joshuawheelock8874 Год назад

      @@justinllamas1 there is no default. All 5 of guys listed have way better offensive numbers than semien this year, as well as Yordan Alvarez. Your conception of how position play comes into the mvp calculation is exactly the reverse. You get extra credit for playing a premium defensive position like shortstop, centerfield, or catcher given outstanding d in those positions is more valuable. There is no rule that says 2b must be light hitters so therefore offense in that position is more valuable than offense from other pisitions whose defense is actually far more important than 2b

When facing playoff caliber teams this year, they’ve also played really well. Winning series against the Yankees, Astros, Angels, Mariners and Phillies. The bullpen has 100% been the one thing holding this team down and had we had any other good arms besides Will Smith, we likely would’ve won the Braves and Diamondbacks series. Until the bullpen gets fixed it’ll be the one thing preventing them from having a real shot at competing, but just from watching this team play, I think as of now everything else points in the direction that they can compete.

    I think the Rangers problem is they signed a bunch of people who are always injured. Seger, deGrom, Evoldi and Heany are all made of porcelain. So how does the team fare when two or three of those go down together and how much time do they all miss. How deep is the squad and how many of those injuries can they cover?
    Those are the questions I have. Because it seems less likely that those players stay healthy. So how they cope with those injuries is what I’m waiting for.

      Depth is where they actually shine, in my opinion. Ezekiel Duran has been killing in Seagers place. Garver hasn't been missed terribly but he's coming back soon. Our OF can't sustain much loss but still a few in the minors who could come up and might shine. Rangers have been going heavy SP in the draft, with White, Rocker, and Leiter coming up in a year or two, which is going to make this team really scary. They are deep with a lot of great trade assets when they find they are one or two players away. Bullpen will get corrected via trade by the deadline and then watch out.

    Nobody is talking about the Rangers because our bullpen is full of head cases that shake in their boots anytime the game is close going into the 7th, 8th or 9th inning there's a high probability that the bullpen blows the game. I think we have 10 blown games from the pen and it's only May 23. Bullpen is really the only piece this team is missing to be a contender, IMO.

      Yessir! The Rangers have lost 5 games after having leads of over 4 runs. They should be 22 games over .500, though their pythag is "only" 33-13 (+108 run differential). Most of that is without deGrom and Seager. They have a deep system of tradeable prospects, so the bullpen issues won't be issues for too long. The Rangers aren't in a hurry though. They have the luxury of bringing deGrom along slowly and evolving into an even more powerful lineup. They still give ABs to Grossman, who hasn't been awful, but they are still getting sub-0.0 WAR from the LF position.

    I have been a Rangers fan pretty much my entire time of being alive, and when I moved to DFW for a decade, it made sense to support them, and it was awesome in 2011... They made it to the World Series where game 6 was above and by far my favorite game of baseball ever played, but they went downhill quite a lot after that. I'm super glad to see them back on the comeup. They also have the best looking City Nights uniforms in baseball by far!

    I think, to a certain extent, people got "White Sox Syndrome" with this team after last season. Personally I think that's why people were a tad bit too tepid on the Rangers for 2023. Would be fun to see them in the post season repping the AL West this year.

      @@LinkRocks it absolutely does. The results of last reason directly influence our conceptions of the various teams for the next season. There was some hype behind the Rangers last year, they underperformed, and now people are taking a "need to see it to believe it" mentality. If Judge hits 40 home runs this year that would be a good season. But would people consider it as successful after his record setting season last year? It all ebbs and flows. Nobody was hyped about Baltimore last year but now they are. It's the opposite as Chicago or Texas.

    Reason why: 1. They have had the easiest schedule thus far, not opinion but fact look it up. 2. Until they beat the Stros for the division and win a playoff series then they’ll be the same rangers we remembered, 2nd team in Texas. 3. Still a ways to go, let’s have this convo in August and see where they at in the race. As of today they are only 1 game ahead of the Stros and the Stros seam to be heating up. Stros field the best team ERA across MLB and their bullpen is prolly still the best. Rangers don’t have to go through the As and the Rockies lol West goes through the Astros until it doesn’t…. No one is talking about them bc they haven’t done anything yet. Kudos for a good start tho. They are on the rise but are they there yet? Let’s wait and see.
