I remember seeing an interview of Dick York back in the late '80's and he was living in a mobile home with his wife, needing a respirator to help with his breathing. His hair was white but the rest of him looked physically ok. The things I remember the most about the interview was him saying he had no regrets for his life and how he was glad that he was able to not depend on painkillers anymore. Inspiring man. RIP Dick York.
@@maxalberts2003 I had read somewhere that Elizabeth Montgomery didn't want to have any contact with Dick York after he left the show. From Ms. Harper Stacey.

Dick York was the best and his character of Darrin Stevens could not be beat. The other actor just didn’t have the same chemistry with the actors or sow that Dick York did. Whenever they have tried to replace a former star with someone else, it just doesn’t t work. It would be like trying to replace a loved one that died with another person and giving them the deceased persons name. That's what I felt when Charlotte Rae left. When Cloris Leachman replaced her, I never accepted her as the replacement of Charlotte Rae. They were two different type of personalities. I like Cloris but I will never accept that she replaced Charlotte Rae in the Facts of Life
I had heard that Dick Sargent was offered the role before Dick York and had to turn it down due to prior commitments. An article I just read said that was something Dick Sargent was claiming but the article also said that the producer of the program, who also happened to be the husband of Elizabeth Montgomery, said that Dick York was always the first choice. Dick Sergeant did a pretty good job under the circumstances but Dick York had made that character his own.
Dick Sargent was a contract player at Columbia Pictures (Screen Gems) and the execs wanted him cast so he could earn his keep. Wm. Asher and Montgomery wanted York. No York, we take the show to another production company.. So they got York.
Here in my city Adelaide South Australia a local radio station would ring Dick up every year to hear how he was going you could hear the pain he was in RIP Dick you were awesome 😔
Each year we wait anxiously to find out if Dick York will finally get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and each year we cry when we find out that he has once again been passed over. Very sad and disappointing. Sometimes no matter what somebody does or had done in their lifetime, somehow it's just never enough.
Seriously, the second lead in an iconic television series, and a man who costarred with Spencer Tracy in one of the most iconic films of the 20th century doesn't have a star on the walk of fame? Someone needs to start a campaign.
@@efandmk3382 Dick York's son started a campaign many years ago, and I've donated money, and many people have signed petitions. Each year it ends up meaning nothing.
The episode where Darren’s ears continue to grow is easily one of my favorite sitcom scenes. They were careful to keep the enlarged ears in the same shape and dimension which added to the comedic effect
Thank you for presenting this I had no idea that dick York went through so much pain I thought it was just fired from Bewitched because of something The producers wanted and he didn't want I guess rumors do have a way of getting on the wrong edge. May he rest in peace in Jesus name amen
Dick York was my favorite by far. Just in the last month I watched Dick in Hitchcock show he was brilliant. I was sad to learn he was leaving Bewitched. He was a big part of the success..
I've heard about his back problems and addiction but YOU were the only one that went into so much more detail and kindness. I learned so much more than what I thought I knew. I subscribed and thumbs up. Great content.
This show had a lot of actors playing the same role. Two Gladys Kravitz', two Darrens, two Frank Stevens', two Tabithas (twins), two Louise Tates. Elizabeth played two parts- Sam and her freaky cuz.
I cannot pick any one specific scene and/or episode that I fondly remember Dick York in on Bewitched because there are too many to choose from. He is however my favorite Darren Stevens from the show. I felt bad when he had left the series and I had wished that he would have come back. Bewitched was a family favorite in my house when I was growing up as a child.
Those Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock episodes when he was just a young man ! A kind, sweet and very handsome young man. I saw them when they had been in syndication for years. Never even saw an original airing of Bewitched. Glad for re-runs ! Turns out he was a Beautiful and very Kind Man in real life as well ! With all his pain, for which I am sad and sorry for, he made the best of it all and led a very awesome life !
Wow, what a kind and caring soul. I loved Bewitched and stopped watching when he left, but I had no idea how much pain he lived with, and still he helped the unfortunate. Wow.
He was great in everything movies and tv. I'm 54 and have Autherits in all of my back, heal spears and a torn ligament. So I understand what he went through to. I'm broke in the hole and can't work to good to. But I never let the meds control me. I take them only if the pain is so bad.
I loved this show as child! I never knew why he left Bewitched. He was just gone one day & replaced by Dick Sargent. I never imagined he had such a devastating injury! Or that he was such a kindhearted & gentle soul. Thank you for this. I see him in a different light now. May he RIP.
His expressions of exasperation were always so funny to me. I used to feel sorry for him as a kid for all the stress his character seemed to be under constantly with Endora. Never knew he was such a giving person.
So much I never knew about Dick York. He truly was a beautiful, remarkable soul who deserves every accolade he's received. God bless Dick York. May he RIP.
The problem with Dick York was he fell in love with Elizabeth Montgomery. Samantha did cast a spell on Darrin. It was like a love potion. York was nominated for an Emmy. People thought Dick's acting was marvelous. People thought Dick was not just an actor saying the words he memorized, he could make the audience see the profound love Darrin felt for Samantha! However
So sad when such generous and loving people have bad things happen. There was an episode in Season Five where he falls off a trellis and he grabs for his back immediately after. I think it was after those episodes he subsequently missed a heap of episodes. They would also work around it by having Darrin be turned in to something or someone else so all Dick really needed to do was the top and tail of the show.
Thank you very much for sharing this. I am 63 years old and I loved watching bewitched as a boy in New Zealand especially enjoying Dick York. As a child I was disappointed when he disappeared of the program. I still watched it but it just wasn't the same. Thanks for explaining what happened to him.
I love ❤ Dick York. First saw him on Bewitched, later in life I watched the TZ and AHP. Dick was wonderful in these series. I could see he was a compassionate, caring man, gone to soon 😪
I loved the first Darren. He was nice, funny, kind, gentle . Thank you for all of those good moments I injoyed watching you, Dick York. May you rest in Peace. These flowers are for you:🌹🌹🌹
There are many names on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that I have never even heard of, but the name "Dick York" is nowhere to be found. What does it take for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to recognize and memorialize a prominent and historic Hollywood TV and motion picture actor such as Dick York? Dick York definitely deserves to be recognized as the talented actor he truly was.
@@dianecelento4974 I once asked Michael Landon (on Larry King Live) about him not getting any Emmys despite 28 years on TV via 3 series. His Bonanza co-star David Canary later won 5 Emmys. He sheepishly said "ya kinda haveta put yourself up for that. The squeaky wheel thing". Landon does have a star, but no Emmy. Gene Autry has four stars! (he has one for radio, movies, TV, music).
One of my favorite Dick York’s moments on Bewitched, is when Samantha was pregnant with Tabitha and Endora put a curse on Darren where he’s to feel all Samantha’s pregnancy symptoms… It’s just hilarious 😂
Good job on the coverage. I dated a girl who was tangentially related to Dick York. Some of her cousins are his grandkids. Fun people to hang out with that were happy to share once they knew I wasn't going to judge the guy harshly off rumors.
That's sweet that they were so protective of him. One of the rumors that unfortunately persists today is that he was an alcoholic- he wasn't; he was addicted to painkillers due to his back injury. It's frustrating to still see people claim that.
I loved Dick York. He nailed his part as Darrin. I only watched one episode of Bewitched after he left and never watched it while on air again. I bought the series on dvd but will only watch seasons 1 thru 5 which included Mr. York. Although he was in pain he gave us his best. A truly great actor. ❤
Actually, Richard Crenna was the first to be asked to take on the role of Darrin Stephens. He turned it down because he had just completed the TV series THE REAL MCCOYS. I think he had something else coming up as well. Dick Sargent WAS the second choice, but was under contract to another company. He would go to work on the short live THE TAMMY GRIMES SHOW In 1966.. How many of you know that Elizabeth Montgomery wasn't the first choice to play Cassandra? Sol Saks wanted Tammy Crimes in the role. She turned it down and Elizabeth was offered the role and an icon was born. Oh, she changed the name to Samantha. Somebody suggested to her to use her own name. She said, "Let's not." 🙂
I just read an article about this yesterday and according to that article the show's producer who was also Elizabeth Montgomery's husband said Dick York was always the first choice. Getting all these different stories from so many different sources is why I have always called the internet the Disinformation Super Highway
@@mikeslater6246 On your opinion of the internet, I couldn't agree more. With a newspaper (what's that? 🙂), there are editors who check and double stories and sources. The internet is like the wild west, before law and order there.

As an example, regardless of what you might believe about Jesus, Google him on the internet and you'll find thousands or maybe even millions of opinions. All of them cannot be true!
There's a website that claims that, but it wasn't actually true. Richard Crenna was in the running, but according to an interview with William Asher himself sponsored by the Emmys, Dick York was always his first choice (he's the one who cast the pilot), and Dick Sargent was "about second best."
He came across as such a nice person, he just had that vibe. That series will always be dear to my heart and was one of the things that made my childhood magical.
wow...this vid solved a childhood mystery for me. I never knew why there was a different actor for Darren on Bewitched. The show did not have the same chemistry when Dick York left.
My favorite moment of Darrin in bewitched was when he daydreamed of a future sequence of his children flying into the window of his office and then Samantha would follow too.

The real reason that York left, was the reason always stated. He had SEVERE back problems and it just gpt so he could not work anymore. If you think back, during the last season he was on, he was only in about half the episodes. And in the episodes in which he did appear, he was always sitting down or lying on the sofa. Yes many people with chronic pain become addicted to pain killers, and York did. But that isn't why he had to leave. In the end, Asher asked York if he needed to be released from his contract, and he said yes.
Yes, Asher visited him in the hospital (Asher once related). He said the studio was seeking his departure. On "My Three Sons", Wm Frawley saw the same fate, as he was a heavy drinker (as per the Livingston brothers), and would be late a lot. Stanley (Chip) would have to wake him for scenes. Now there, I liked both Williams- Frawley and his replacement Demarest. Both quality. Another fav show.
I Absolutley love and Honore Dick York as a person and his acting what a beautiful person you are mr York and I wish his family would know this and I know I’m not alone !
Wow! I never knew much about Dick York's personal life, but I thought he was fantastic on Bewitched - much better than his replacement, Dick Sargent. I'm quite impressed by how great a person he was. I don't think I would've been able to handle living in constant pain nearly as gracefully as he did! I'm also quite impressed by his charity work and overall positive attitude about life. May we all try to be more like him in these ways!
Enjoyed the show throughly while growing up in the Sixties. The chemistry between him and Elizabeth was marvelous to behold. May they both Rest In Peace!! 🤩

Such a riot to watch. We sure do miss "Those Were The Days."

She did in front of everyone, because Liz wouldn't let it go. Moorehead still said things that hurt Sargent.
Moorehead later admitted it wasn't personal. But it still hurt him. They eventually became friends.
Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick Sargent were very fond of one another.
That's what I felt when Charlotte Rae left. When Cloris Leachman replaced her, I never accepted her as the replacement of Charlotte Rae. They were two different type of personalities. I like Cloris but I will never accept that she replaced Charlotte Rae in the Facts of Life
I agree, he made their relationship look real 🥰. I also heard he and Agnes Morehead were good friends.
Dick Sargent also played in a TV series in 1987/88 called DOWN TO EARTH. It was one of the first cable produced shows for Turner.
York was better IMO
I heard Dick Sargent was cosidered when Tammy Grimes was in line for Samantha actually originally named Cassandra.
@@Garsons-oq4lh Yes. But by the time Elizabeth Montgomery and William Asher were involved, Asher's first choice was always Dick York.
Interesting story about Dick York.
And despite all the pain he went through 🤣
He was an integral part of an integral show. He surely belongs on that sidewalk!
One day he will
He was the best Darrin. Such a good actor.
I've heard rumors of interpersonal issues on set not included in this video.
Wow, what a great human being this man was! I'm glad I took the time to watch this. Thank you for sharing!
Dick York was my favorite by far. Just in the last month I watched Dick in Hitchcock show he was brilliant. I was sad to learn he was leaving Bewitched. He was a big part of the success..
Dick York's last appearance was onan episode of fantasy island. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
I've heard about his back problems and addiction but YOU were the only one that went into so much more detail and kindness. I learned so much more than what I thought I knew. I subscribed and thumbs up. Great content.
The original Darrin Stephens, played by Dick York (1928-1992), was the best one ever.
👍
died in his 60s wow that young nower days
He was the only Darrin to me. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
@@harperstacey9604 Hello! I hope you're having a great Thursday! I agree; Dick York is the only Darrin for me.
@@dianetheisen8664 Hello, Diane. I also hope that you are having a great Thursday, too. Bewitched forever. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Dick York was a fabulous actor and a completely inspired casting choice for Bewitched. It was never the same show without him.
Seeing all these loving comments about this great, wonderful, caring human being makes me SMILE. Well deserved Mr. York !!!!
He was my favorite Darren. He was also great in the movie "Inherit the Wind", about the Scopes Monkey Trial, very good movie.
I loved Dick York in Bewitched. I did not realize he had a bad back problem. He was a classy guy. May his soul rest in peace. He was a good man.
Bewitched was a family favorite in my house when I was growing up as a child.
a class act
wanted to help his mom
He was Darrin!! That other guy, stunk!! God bless Dick York up in Heaven. He is missed by a lot of fans.
I remember the Twilight ZONE where he was the Captain to a guy who could tell who was not gonna make it back after the days mission.
Hats off to Dick York the best Darrin. What a good man to help so many unfortunate people. We miss him.
I also preferred Dick York's character on Bewitched.
I believe most people, myself included, would agree with you.
Sam!!!!
Ya, Dick Sargent sucked, literally
However
Thank you! What a man! Nobody could hold a candle to Dick York as Darrin! RIP!
Dick York appeared in a episode of rawhide with Barbara Eden who starred on I dream of Jeannie. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
I heard anybody that has the star on the walk of fame has to pay for it themselves. Maybe he wasn't interested.
If you do not recognize " many" names on the Hollywood walk of fame , most likely , you are about 20.
@@joebloggs8636 The names I DON'T recognize are exactly those that 20-somethings and younger DO recognize, Joe.
What a lovely man. Such a good person. Thank you for this video xx
Rip Mr. York. You were Darrin. Dick Sargent killed this classic show.
Wow! What a beautiful person he was! I've always been a fan, but now even more.
One of my favorite Dick York’s moments on Bewitched, is when Samantha was pregnant with Tabitha and Endora put a curse on Darren where he’s to feel all Samantha’s pregnancy symptoms… It’s just hilarious 😂
God bless Dick York, Thanks for your Kindness, thanks for all the wonderful memories. RIP
Dick York was a wonderful actor!! He sadly missed ❤️
Wow...I had no idea what a hospitable and generous man he was. God bless him!!
@@kerrykeene6471 good points in comparison on the wild wild west. It is definitely mostly opinion and not real news or objective fact. As an example, regardless of what you might believe about Jesus, Google him on the internet and you'll find thousands or maybe even millions of opinions. All of them cannot be true!
@@kerrykeene6471 - "Editors who check and double check stories in newspapers" ? Perhaps 40 years ago.
Dick York was that program" with fascinating expression, way he moved his eyes" Such a likable man
An in real life One Big hearted 💔 man....R I P
Great actor, and Bewitched is one of his classic roles. Was a huge fan.
wow...this vid solved a childhood mystery for me. I never knew why there was a different actor for Darren on Bewitched. The show did not have the same chemistry when Dick York left.
My favorite moment of Darrin in bewitched was when he daydreamed of a future sequence of his children flying into the window of his office and then Samantha would follow too.
I love him best on Bewitched as Darin Stephens . The best part is always when he'd yell out : Samantha !
i always liked Dick York. i never knew of his injury and struggles. he was a great man .
"Durr-wood" as Endora used to call him. 🤣
Love Endora, and I also love that Liz Montgomery's hair color is the same as her's in the thumbnail picture 😊
Dick York was the BEST ACTOR for BEWITCH as ELIZABETH MONGOMERY HUSBAND!!! Just Saying!
@@paulinemills6684 💯%😎👍👏👏👏👏👏
Bewitched was a pos without Dick York, Montgomery was a snotty woke entitled pedowood pos.She had it wrong if she thought she made Bewitched ,Morehead, York make the show..she only made it because of daddy Robert Montgomery...
@@ginaspurlding8590 thats interesting.I was only about 4 then. That was amazing to see color tv.You make sense.the part was easy.As a adult her acting stank.and flopped in movies. The mother was a great actor.
God Bless his soul.... It's good to know those who gave more of themselves..... then they took.... how few they are...
Our favorite moments were the verbal exchanges/insults between Darren or "Derwood" (Dick York) and Endora (Agnes Moorehead), just like the ones between Fred Sanford (Redd Foxx) and Aunt Esther (LaWanda Page), along with Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor) and "Meathead" (Rob Reiner). Such a riot to watch. We sure do miss "Those Were The Days."
"Bewitched" family favorite tv program as a child. We all loved it.❤️
I always thought he was the best Darrin. I loved it when Uncle Arther made him think he could cast a spell on Endora. So funny.
From all the different source material I have read about Dick York he seem like a very kind and generous man. God rest his soul.
This makes me love him even more 😭
Wow! It's good to know. I respect his memory even more. A charitable soul. Thanks for sharing.
I went to high school with Dick's son Matt, a very nice guy.
Why didn't Dick York's children help him out when they became adults? From Ms. Harper Stacey.

There's only one, Darrin Stephens,
Mr. Dick York🙏
A really lovely man. His goodness shone through.
I heard a report he was fired and Agnes was furious they fired him
You could tell the character he was playing was really himself. He was without a doubt the best Darren.
He was the best Darren. He was nervous and funny around Endora. Who won’t be? He never knew what tricks she had up her sleeve. The other Darren was just nasty. Rest In Peace . You deserve it. Thank You for all the laughs. I’m still laughing when I see Bewitch
Wow.... I have a new respect and love for Dick York. A true hero.
Dick York died on February 20th, not February 2nd (as was stated at 9:39 mark), 1992. Find A Grave.
Yes I looked at the picture and it does say the 20th
Dick York, WHAT A CLASS ACT! WE NEED SO MANY MORE LIKE THIS MAN!
I preferred Dick York too, but Sargent probably did as well as anyone could, stepping into a role like that.
Great actor, potential, talent & capacity for extreme pain & fortitude sadly missed in the UK.
