His one scene in JFK should have won him the Oscar. It's a masterclass in dialogue delivery. He holds the screen for 15 minutes, his voice barely rising above a whisper. After "Johnnie got his Gun" he was blackballed. That's the first movie I saw coming home from Vietnam, it was devastating. One of the best pictures I've ever seen. Shows the true face of war.
Donald was a qualified pilot and was a regular visitor to his ancestral home of Scotland. He particularly enjoyed visiting the Isle of Mull where Robbie Coltrane ( Harry Potter fame) also enjoyed breaks. 🏴
Eye of the Needle is in my collection of all-time top movies, sad that it had such a brief mention. I really enjoyed the range of his character going from very tongue and cheek Irish, to the serious plotting spy. A great watch, and a great actor.
crazy.. never seen a bad performance and has been a likeable character in sooo many good films. surprising to hear he hasnt won any awards from oscars.
The moment I knew he was a great actor came in Ordinary People. Near the end of the film his wife played brilliantly by Mary Tyler Moore comes down to find him crying at a darkened kitchen table. She asks him why hes crying and he says: "I realized that I dont love you anymore. And I dont know what Im going to do without that." The way that he delivers the line is so devastating that it freezes your heart. Said resolutely, at the end of a long cry. But he looks so drained and tired and heartbroken. I'll never forget that moment.
@chele277. Hell mate, your comment made me laugh! I was a young bloke in South Africa fresh out of school. No car yet, lived in a boarding house. Heard about this movie but could only attend the 8 o" clock evening screening. Movie theatre about 2km from boarding house. Show ended around 10.45pm. Years ago in 1983, I was an extra in Keifer Sutherland's first film, The Bay Boy, when he was 16 filmed in Glace Bay. I had such a crush on him...mainly because he was Donald's son. 😂
@@blessedfire365xgf are you referring to Canada's health care system ? I don't love there anymore but it's turned to absolute shite due to under-funding over the past 30 years but still better than the shameful non-existent health care in the US.
@blessedfire365xgf Happy that it exists, definitely. There's a lot of room to expand because a lot of things weren't covered originally. We're starting to cover some things now, like pharmaceuticals and dentistry, but things like mental health, optometry, and auditory care are still being left out. Also, government underfunding is still a major issue too. That is the most brutal.
Oscars have nothing to do with talent and all to do with politics! He was one of the most engaging actors I have ever seen, as you can believe the roles he plays without question. He is not a "Star" who only play themselves, such as John Wayne, etc.

The teenage Sutherland just had to have been called 'Willy Wingnut'. Excellent actor though, Odball being the first character I ever saw him portray, he was fantastic in that movie, Kelly's Heroes - 'Always with them negative waves Moriarty, knock it off', sublimely funny character. RIP Donald.
DS: Tank's busted. TS: Well why aren't you helping 'em fix it? DS: Oh man, I just ride 'em. I don't know what makes 'em work. Sutherland was just fantastic.
I always enjoyed his acting. I was born in the Saint John General Hospital seven years after Donald Sutherland was born there. I was in a film with Lee Marvin but ended up on the cutting room floor 🤣
He may also have been a concern because of his admiration for and portrayal of Norman Bethune. Bethune was a Canadian doctor who went to China during their civil war to tend the injured community soldiers
Great docu, thanks. Sutherland always seemed a bit unhinged to me. This vid explains much about him, his life, and those around him. Thanks for posting.
One movie that I really enjoyed was a Canadian made for t.v. movie about the life of Dr. Norman Bethune that was shown on Canadian television in about the mid 1980's. I admired his acting ability in that movie, as well as the movie "Ordinary People". He was a great actor!🎉
I find the reason for Sutherland not winning an Oscar rather unconvincing. Jane Fonda was also politically very active on "the Left" ,and protested openly against the Vietnam war, and even posed with North Vietnamese soldiers on an army tank in Hanoi, yet she won no less than 2 Oscars, one in 1971 and one in 1978.
Actually he wasn't as radical as his cousin Norman Bethune. The most famous Canadian no one has ever heard of. As a surgeon he invented tools that are still in use today. Invented the MASH unit when in the Spanish Civil War. Went to China to help Mao fight off the Japanese. Mao wrote an essay about him in his Little Red Book. At one point everyone in the country had to memorize it! To this day school kids in China do a unit on him in Grade 4.
Klute was terrific, directed by the late Alan J. Pakula. Controversial, about call girls, Bree Daniels, the Jane Fonda role. One of my favorite movies. Fine thriller, got Jane Fonda Best Actress Oscar. D Sutherland was a great actor. RIP Donald Sutherland, you did get your Oscar. You left us an awesome filmography. B r a v o ♡☆☆☆☆!

My father actually hired Donald Sutherland for his first professional acting job at the Gravenhurst Summer Stock theatre🎭 I actually had Donald Sutherland’s copy of We’re No Angels.
He was truly an amazing person & actor ❤❤ Thank you for recognizing him😊
By the way Donald Sutherland was one of the hardest working actor’s in the business he stayed busy all the time and was in demand constantly.
Great show! One of my favorite actors and i knew nothing of this story! I grew up on Mash! Kelly's Heroes i can still watch and laugh. I can cite lines. Donald Sutherland was one of the greatest!
His role in Backdraft as the pyromaniac was chilling.
Haunting role as Ronald the arsonist, convincing and memorable
Yup. This video deserves a downvote for not even mentioning it.
After "Johnnie got his Gun" he was blackballed. That's the first movie I saw coming home from Vietnam, it was devastating. One of the best pictures I've ever seen. Shows the true face of war.
devastating!
"Johnnie got his Gun" was about World War One !!
not Vietnam
@@malegrissusran8847 It was about all wars.
@@andrewfurie5647
Yes i know !
@@malegrissusran8847 so what? OP didn't claim it was about Vietnam.
Donald was a qualified pilot and was a regular visitor to his ancestral home of Scotland. He particularly enjoyed visiting the Isle of Mull where Robbie Coltrane ( Harry Potter fame) also enjoyed breaks. 🏴
Klute and JFK were the performances that always stuck with me.
Also Nicolas Roeg's classic "Don't Look Now" costarring his adult life long friend Julie Christie
Eye of the Needle is in my collection of all-time top movies, sad that it had such a brief mention. I really enjoyed the range of his character going from very tongue and cheek Irish, to the serious plotting spy. A great watch, and a great actor.
With Kate Nelligan, 😛
I still have that film on Betamax!
So he said goodbye to the stage and hello to some guy’s couch? That’s pretty crazy. I have always found Donald Sutherland to be very intriguing.
You left out Caligula. Maybe not the best movie but as usual Donald Sutherland's acting was top notch.
crazy.. never seen a bad performance and has been a likeable character in sooo many good films. surprising to hear he hasnt won any awards from oscars.
The moment I knew he was a great actor came in Ordinary People. Near the end of the film his wife played brilliantly by Mary Tyler Moore comes down to find him crying at a darkened kitchen table. She asks him why hes crying and he says: "I realized that I dont love you anymore. And I dont know what Im going to do without that."
The way that he delivers the line is so devastating that it freezes your heart. Said resolutely, at the end of a long cry. But he looks so drained and tired and heartbroken. I'll never forget that moment.
👌
A great Canadian Actor
We will miss him greatly.
What about invasion of the body snatchers
The scream at the end!😳
👵🏻👵🏼Don’t look now..
There were two references early in this profile.
I got outside, hardly ANY traffic, howling wind, pitch dark. I think my record still stands.....FASTEST 2km "walk" in history!! 😆😄
Yes!! That end scene where he points and screams was haunting!!
One of my favorite comedy films with Donald Sutherland as the lead is in the Italian film called Fellini's Casanova 1976. Sutherland was exceptioinal. He should have won an award. It's a must warch.
He is a beautiful legend of Canadian roots
Oh my! Those ears in his early photos.
No mention of his star turn breathing life into Fellini's Casanova, a fever dream of Baroque Europe.
LOVED SUTHERLANDS ACTING AND ROLES ALWAYS WAS A BIG FAN
Donald A great supporter of FREEDOM OF SPEECH!
Some of my fav. Donald Sutherland movies: Virus, Citizen X, Beerfest, The Eagle Has Landed, Kellys Heroes and the Kentucky Fried Movie.
Rest In Peace.
The Eagle Has Landed was a great book, and he was wonderful in the movie.
Fun fact: Donald Sutherland's father-in-law founded Canada's universal health care system.
Tommy Douglas 👍
Hello from Belgium... I have a feeling you guys are Canadian? I'm an expat of over 35 years, originally from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.
Years ago in 1983, I was an extra in Keifer Sutherland's first film, The Bay Boy, when he was 16 filmed in Glace Bay. I had such a crush on him...mainly because he was Donald's son. 😂
Are you happy with it
@@blessedfire365xgf are you referring to Canada's health care system ?
I don't love there anymore but it's turned to absolute shite due to under-funding over the past 30 years but still better than the shameful non-existent health care in the US.
@blessedfire365xgf Happy that it exists, definitely. There's a lot of room to expand because a lot of things weren't covered originally. We're starting to cover some things now, like pharmaceuticals and dentistry, but things like mental health, optometry, and auditory care are still being left out.
Also, government underfunding is still a major issue too. That is the most brutal.
I particularly liked his stellar performance in "Ordinary People" and "Outbreak".
I think "Ordinary People' is one of his best performances.
Oscars have nothing to do with talent and all to do with politics! He was one of the most engaging actors I have ever seen, as you can believe the roles he plays without question. He is not a "Star" who only play themselves, such as John Wayne, etc.
One of the greatest actors of all time!!
Hello from Belgium... I have a feeling you're Canadian? I really loved your mini biography of arguably, Canada's greatest actor!

Feeling a little homesick now...
It's a piece of junk! The fuel system leaks all over the place, ITS A PIECE Of JUNK!
Have a little faith, baby, HAVE A LITTLE FAITH!
I always enjoyed his acting. I was born in the Saint John General Hospital seven years after Donald Sutherland was born there. I was in a film with Lee Marvin but ended up on the cutting room floor 🤣
He was so totally awesome in "Back Draft." I will never forget that performance.
Same.
He may also have been a concern because of his admiration for and portrayal of Norman Bethune. Bethune was a Canadian doctor who went to China during their civil war to tend the injured community soldiers
My favourite line of his, and one that I quoted to my son on hearing Donald had died, was " eating cheese, drinking, wine. From Kelly's Heroes.
Eating some cheese, drinking some wine, catching some rays, you know!
Great docu, thanks. Sutherland always seemed a bit unhinged to me. This vid explains much about him, his life, and those around him. Thanks for posting.
Class act of a man...
Good guy, he wasn’t a warmonger or a supremacist.
Which actor is a "supremacist"?
@@sarahpiaggio2693 For example John Wayne.
And neither is PRESIDENT TRUMP THE GREAT.
@@wildrover9650😳
@sarahashun1180 John Wayne wasn't a supremacist. He just didn't care for blacks. In those days nobody did.
Though Jane Fonda (and her brother) were "Hollywood Royalty" due to who her father was, that also might have been a factor.
@@AbelMcTalisker You are probably right.
Thank you so very much. He was one of my favorite actors. REP.
Klute was terrific, directed by the late Alan J. Pakula. Controversial, about call girls, Bree Daniels, the Jane Fonda role. One of my favorite movies. Donald Sutherland was great, he should have been awarded Best Actor Oscar. He acted the role of a small town private detective who saved Bree Daniels' life. Fine thriller, got Jane Fonda Best Actress Oscar. D Sutherland was a great actor. RIP Donald Sutherland, you did get your Oscar. You left us an awesome filmography. B r a v o ♡☆☆☆☆!
Well stated and I agree. I love that film and so glad to have it on DVD. Brilliant film.
Flute was my favorite ❤️
@@nikkihines3652 It was called "Klute" not Flute.
@@PossumLover1111 that’s right dear. It was Klute 🙏
Too bad Hanoi Jane was in it.
I always love Donald in his movies, he played very different roles to perfection. He is truly missed.
Wait, you just barely alluded to Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It's the best version of the many that have been made, in my estimation. When I think of Sutherland, I think of that film. Also, he was Mr Bennet in that not-great version of Pride & Prejudice.
This left out a lot of movies.
@@montylc2001Puppet Masters
In the top 5. R.I.P. the late great, Donald Sutherland.
