In the 70s, my folks worked for the military as civilians in Guam, so I was fortunate enough to attend one of Bob Hope's shows on base--Andersen Air Force Base. We always looked forward to watching his Christmas shows on tv as well as seeing his movies, especially the "Road" ones. Thanks for the memories!
I'm 36. It started about 6 years ago when I learned that Groucho Marx was the man behind an elephant in pajamas. I discovered a world of classic comedy! The Marx Brothers turned to Jack Benny, which evolved to Burns and Allen and Fred Allen. Onto Milton Berle and Bob Hope and many others. I had heard of many of these people but never knew anything about them. I've always enjoyed history, but these comedians were captured in film and I could still see and hear them nearly 100 years later. I try to tell anyone that'll listen about these great comedians and sometimes i manage to hook someone and they dive deep into this amazing history.
Bob Hope was so funny and a wonderful entertainer and he did it with class. I was just a little girl growing up in the 70's, but I remember watching his acts and movies and TV shows. I miss those days. Now we don't see nothing, but fussing, fighting, and evil most of the time. I sure am tired of it. Our country is divided and it shouldn't be. I hope someday we can get back to that way of life again. Bob Hope will always be loved and missed. ❤ Thank you for sharing this documentary with us.
I am British and when I was a girl I absolutely loved when Bob Hope came onto the television, we all sat around that little black and white set in the corner waiting for his great smile to make us smile. Thank you Bob. ❤❤❤
Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s it really didn’t feel like Christmas until the Hope Christmas special was on NBC with Brooke Shield and the annual release of the AP college football team players. When it was on you knew it was the holidays and you didn’t care if the skits were corny because we knew he was a legend.
Bob Hope was a genius, and I don´t give a damn about his private life when I talk about him as an entertainer. His standup routines were funny and so were his movies.
They were not; Bob Hope is not funny, I don't know why people think he's funny: Jack Benny, George Burns, Jackie Gleason are funny, Bob Hope isn't. Bob Hope's USO Tours, however, are divine ❤️, American troops really NEEDED Bob Hope.
Bob Hope is not funny he's a Master of Ceremonies. his reactions to jokes are funny. ❤️ , I don't know why people think he's funny: Jack Benny, George Burns, Jackie Gleason are funny, Bob Hope isn't. Bob Hope's USO Tours, however, are divine ❤️, American troops really NEEDED Bob Hope
He was such an interesting man. I never really found his stand-up routines very funny, but I've always found his movies funny, especially those with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour--and those with Lucy.
WW 2 was evil, so many teenagers left and never came back. It was ugly for all the US armed forces to have to suffer in the war. For the ones from every war had to live with the devastating memories. Vietnam was also a terrible war. It waa neat that Bob and his connections went to entertain the troops. Bob Hope came at a time in life and was fortunate enough to make a living doing what he seemed to enjoy. His private life like everyone else's isn't perfect. He played the game his way.
Does this cover his lifelong skirt-chasing? He was, apparently, legendarily unfaithful to Dolores Hope, a fact concealed for decades by his friends and press agents. Hope: Entertainer of the Century by Richard Zoglin goes into this in some detail. He was also not a naturally funny man, by all accounts, and could not do off-the-cuff humor to save his life, but he knew how to deliver the material his writers wrote for him. His decision to entertain troops over three wars was a canny one. If it hadn't been for that, would anyone other than film buffs remember his Road movies with Crosby?
I'd disagree with the commentator who doesn't "give a damn" about Hope's private life. Bob Hope was someone whose public image was hugely at odds with the reality of things. He was portrayed as an likeable, good-humored man, when he was, by many reports, dismissive and arrogant to many people around him, family and strangers both. He was portrayed as being in a strong, nearly 70-year-long marriage, when he was, research has shown, a serial adulterer who, research also revealed, may never have married Dolores or, at least, not when he claimed he did. He was portrayed as a comedy genius, when he was a competent professional comic with a crack staff of writers who scripted every "impromptu" joke he made. His genius, if any, was in delivering the lines well. I'd hope that a documentary on Hope's life would pick up on some of these contradictions. I'll be curious to see if "This is Bob Hope..." does.
The number of guys who were faithful to their wives in Hollywood at that time wouldn't be enough for a baseball team. Power fuels lots of playing around. The difference is that back then it could be hidden. The public thought he was a great, moral guy. Hardly.
His enormous success and popularity will always be a mystery to me larger than the Sphinx! I remember watching his "Bob Hope" specials on NBC in the sixties when I was 7 or eight years old. I'd be saying to myself, "this is the lamest, unfunniest guy I've ever seen". He'd be reading these terrible jokes from cue cards, and of course there were the obligatory oodles of obnoxious, canned laughter. He was obviously a very shrewd operator behind the scenes to have ascended so high on the entertainment pyramid, but I always found him hopelessly unfunny and unlikeable as well.

Exactly, we did too when I was growing up. ❤😊
I’ve always thought it’s ironic that one of the most quintessentially American entertainers around was born in England. -Love that Bob! ❤️👌
I'm so glad they were able to get Tom Selleck to comment on Hope's life...what a coup.
Bob Hope was just amazing

@probyful definitely not, and I can prove it: ask the next random person you see at the grocery store if Bob Hope is funny and they'll say, "no."

Nope, Hope was a comedian, he looked funny though and mu guess is that he had more than one line of work.
Geez...you must be fun at parties......every silver lining has a cloud.

Watch the video and find out
He embarrassed himself in his later years when he was so obviously reading everything off cue cards😮
