  • Cheap Toolbox Welding Cart for about $60 plus the cost of the toolbox. I was interested in this toolbox welding cart design because I have multiprocess Esab Rebel welder that comes with a lot of equipment. Also, I needed a setup that was able to handle 2 different bottles because depending on what type of welding I'm doing, I need two bottles.
    Like I said in the video, I took inspiration from one of ZT Fab's kits. I'm not taking shots at ZT Fab. You can't compare what I made here to one of their kits. My labor is free and I'm using a cheap cut off wheel to cut my material. He is using a laser cutter, a press brake, and is paying for labor. So, his costs are understandable. Go check out his stuff because I haven't heard anything bad about anything he sells. www.all-a-cart.com/
    Obviously, you can use whatever size toolbox you want. I purchased my materials for the box size and bottle sizes I was working with. For reference, my setup uses a US General 26" x 22" toolbox and I have 125cf (7" diameter) cylinders. My setup is about 36" long and nearly 24" deep. If you have a larger box or larger cylinders you will have to scale up what I made here. Buy some extra material because nobody is perfect haha.
    Here is a list of the materials that I used to make this cart:
    -16ft of 2" angle 1/8" thick
    -8ft of 2" wide plate 1/8" thick
    -2ft of 7" wide plate 1/8" thick
    Casters were reused from the toolbox and bolted onto the new frame.

    Hey Geek - I'm a local fanboy living within a few miles of your shop. Not sure if you're still looking at comments on a 3 year old vid. Think I may have watched everything you have posted over the last few years. Started with your vids way back with rustproofing stuff. My COVID project was total renovation of a 1997 Xplorer Class B RV. I used many of your ideas to give a new life to that old tired (but VERY sought after) RV. It turned out so well I even invested in a full body paint job.
    I'm old enough to be your grand dad, but you remind me of me when I was your age. I'm gonna build this very cart with box just like you did for my Miller multiprocess machine. It's the most elegantly simple plan I have seen. So glad I ran across this. By the way, if you are still in this area, or still running your business, please let me know. I always support local businesses and have work I need to do on a few things. Also have LOTS of local friends who would gladly support someone like you. We can figure out some way to exchange personal contact info.

    Really like the look of your cart. Thanks for making the build simple but really good looking. i have a few cutting tools but not breaks or shears , so i need it simple. I also really like ZTFab but cant see spending that kind of cash, i would rather build my own. i have a multi-process Miller, I am going to use your idea and add on a little more to it ,

  • @Generalpickaname

    Awesome job. Quick question, why wouldn’t you add another extended shelf on the other side to place the welder on down low (like the gas) and then convert the top into a welding platform? Can that even be done or is that a bad idea - keeping weld plate close to the gas?

    • @RepairGeek
      @RepairGeek  Год назад

      I could do that to increase space if needed. Welding right on the top of the box probably isn't the best idea. I could see the heat warping the top of the toolbox.

    • @Generalpickaname
      @Generalpickaname Год назад

      @@RepairGeek true, what if I have a welding plate sit on top of the box lid, same length, width as the tool box. Then have the gas and welder on either side using your same approach. I’m only using D sized bottles as a Home DIY’er. I can’t imagine there an issue with welding sparks being so close to gas cylinders (argon/cos2 mix), especially if I have a little overhang and the bottle is down low. Any guidance against doing this for any reason?

    • @RepairGeek
      @RepairGeek  Год назад

      You can't just have that plate sit on the top. You need an air gap to keep the heat from transferring into the box.

    How do you find the ESAB Sentinel A50 helmet???

    • @RepairGeek
      @RepairGeek  3 года назад +2

      The only thing I have to compare it to is an older 5 or 6 year old Lincoln 3350. The Sentinel is clearer but the newer 3350s are just as clear. The biggest difference is the viewing window. The 3350 has a much larger viewing window. It's much better for out of position welding when you can't look through the center of the lens. The batteries are much easier to change on the Esab but the lenses are more expensive.
      Honestly they are both good hoods. You can't go wrong with either one. They have differences for sure but one isn't leaps and bounds better than the other.

    Nice project. Too bad Harbor Freight no longer carries that tool cart. I'd like to emphasize your point about keeping the doors closed in consideration of your neighbors. For more than 40 years my shops have been adjacent to residential neighbors. Long term, the courtesies you extend will come back in ways you cannot foresee. Expressed another way, if you have a screw you attitude, guess who's going to get screwed.

  • @greenAbbot
    @greenAbbot 2 года назад

    Nice build. One thing confuses me about the design here, though--it seems like the nuts that would be used to keep the wheels bolted in would be sticking out so the entire weight of the cabinet would be resting on them. Is this true and, if so are you concerned about that warping the box?

    • @RepairGeek
      @RepairGeek  2 года назад

      The box has a metal lip that the box sits on.The heads of the bolts sit slightly inward of the bottom lip of the box. Hope that makes sense. This setup still works great. I wouldn't change anything about it.

    I don't get the price of ZTFab kits. For my needs, one kit would run $280. That's for two pieces of bent steel and two wheels. Total cost with a US General box: $580 plus tax on the box. No, no, no. Your way is much better.

    • @RepairGeek
