- A how-to, or maybe a how-not-to, on building your own DIY welding cart from mostly scrap and leftover materials. Is it good? Maybe. Is it cheap? Yes. Should you build one yourself? I don't know!

Good work! My cart is built in the almost exact same way! I used an old 2-drawer file cabinet and built a steel frame for it similarly, but smaller gauge. I also made it so it’s just a little higher in the front than in the back. This makes the drawers to kinda be self-closing. I have larger pneumatic tires at the rear for when I have to move the whole thing from my shop to the tractor shed. The big wheels makes it easier for going over gravel, etc. It’s great to see those file cabinets being repurposed! Keep up the good work!
I definitely would have gone with larger tires if I ever took it out of the shop, but no need for me. And yup, filing cabinets are a very handy thing in the shop, there is all sorts of things you can do with them. Thanks for the kind words!

@ 57 I'm starting to do the things I've always wanted to do, welding, fabricating, building............. So for that reason alone, I'm loving these videos. 1st project is a 1992 Jeep Cherokee or XJ. the dream tear down & stroke the 4.0L making a 4.2L, the fairytale diesel swap it...😜
The 4BT or the 4cylender JD's are everywhere around this part of Wyoming, top of the list has always been the Mercedes however they are few & far between in this area. PLEASE keep posting I really need the guidance !!!!

I have a couple of the lateral file cabinets in my garage, they work great for storage of bulky tools and supplies. File cabinets are great. Cart came out well.
I agree mill scale removal is a waste of time for all but the most fancy project.
Filing cabinets are great storage and they're dirt cheap. I have a bunch for holding oil/hardware/bigger tools too.
100%. Unless you’re tig welding you are wasting your time! That mill scale will get boiled out of that puddle!

Did you have to deal with the thing being top heavy ?
Entertaining. File cabinets are too flimsy frankly, the doors will end up not working well after a short time of moving it around would be my opinion.
Just commenting for the algorithm. I need to make another cart, my current one made of two hf dollys and some 2x4 broke.
Everyone seems to use straight wheels in back, my first cart was that way, I hated not being able to move it sideways at will.
File cabinets are available in a variety of qualities based on load rating. The one I used in a mid grade one and has zero issues with the heavy welder on top and being filled with clamps and consumables. I have many of the high grade ones for storing hardware, and some of them have hundreds of pounds in each drawer and been in daily use without failure. The cheap ones are only good for storing light articles like rags, gloves, respirators, etc, and I think that's what you're more familiar with.

Did you find your band saw at KMS?
Good question, I bought it long enough ago I don't remember, but it probably was KMS. I've since upgraded to a bigger one actually.
Oh yeah... when you built the skid for the fuel tank on your XJ why did you make the front lip flat or at a 90, versus making it angel forward to deflect whatever it hit down & away. Not saying you did this wrong just wondering why??? Thx again...👍👍
Great question. I think it was because there was already limited space between it and the axle. I might have been able to add another piece to it to make the 45 degree angle without putting the front of it any closer to the axle, but that would have added complexity. It was a long time ago now that I built that, so I really don't remember. Currently it works fine, but certainly things could have been done differently to make it even better.

After I wrote this I've seen several pics, designs & vids, all are 90° so most not be much of a concern....👍
@@maleficentcop2752 Yeah, I haven't had any issues with it getting hung up on anything. But there is always room for improvements on designs!
