- This is one of the coolest welding carts I have ever built. Its so easy to make, it only takes a day, and you don't need a lathe or a milling machine, just a grinder and a welder. I hope you enjoy this video on building the perfect welding cart.
Hi Dale. Better late than never they say. Took me 2 years to watch this video. I built myself the perfect(at the time) welding cart years ago. Over the years I've noticed that my perfect welding cart is only a welding cart and kind of a headache in a custom shop. Thank you for sharing your idea. This will make my life worth living again. One of the better conversion type welding carts. Lots of grocery shopping cart conversions out there. But, this one actually has lots of long-term crowded-shop positives.

I'm so glad I watched this video. I'm also building a welding cart from a file cabinet, except it's a two drawer. So far I haven't found a cheap three drawer like you have. I was going to hang the back wheels on the outside, but you're right, they would get hooked on everything. Same goes for the hooks I was going to put on the sides. Good thing I haven't started cutting yet.

Hi Dale. I also make use of old filing cabinets as storage. I love to frequent auctions - it's a great way of building a workshop at low cost. A year ago I paid $10 for 22 filing cabinets of various sizes - yep less than half a dollar each. Up till today I have been using them for storage. With this videos you have opened my eyes to some new possibilities. I gave up on the mobile idea because I found casters to be unsatisfactory on a rough floor. The larger wheels on the rear looks to be a great solution. and Incorporating the telescopic arm and gas bottle is ingenious. I think I have watched most of your videos and take this opportunity to give my thanks to you for selflessly producing such a professional series for the backyard machinist. I think the shows on TV could learn a thing or 2 , and would love to see you host a TV yourself one day. All the best with your channel.

WOW, i thought this was gonna be a YAWC (yet another welder cart) video. The arm idea is great. Plus the the big wheels in back and to top it off the tip about extending the frame backwards so it won't hook the others in the carts 'parking spot' Thanks

I've been thinking about building a welding cart using a 3 drawer filing cabinet for the past 6 months and low and behold, this popped up in my recommendation list..it's a sign from God lol. I was wondering if a helmet would fit in the bottom drawer, and now I know. This build is simplicity at its best. 2 THUMBS UP 👍😎👍

A future video on how you made the telescoping arm would be very cool. I have thought about doing something similar in the center of my 440 sqft workspace with a 240v extension cord so I can weld all around my space. My idea was similar to the arms you see at DIY car wash centers with the pressure washer hose, but this seems much cleaner and easily stored when not in use.

Nice project. I like the telescoping arm. I think I will add this feature to my Mig machine to the torch cables off the floor.

I actually have one of these cabinets but a 2 drawer model, top drawer is for old sanding discs and sandpaper, bottom drawer is for large impact guns and on top is my small drill press but I l also like what you have done with yours, NICE!!!

I'm going to make your TIG arm. That's a good idea. I've already made a telescoping arm to hang two flex-shaft grinders (think professional Dremel tools). I made mine with a 16mm post base, so I can drop it into any fixture hole on my welding table.

I recently bought an Atlas metal shaper and am building a cart around an old filing cabinet to mount the shaper on. The drawers will hold shaper cutters and fixtures and maybe some small pieces of metal stock that would otherwise get lost around the shop.

Exelent solition. I've been looking for a small tool box to build a welding cart around. The drawers aren't quite what I wanted but I can make them work to my advantage. Maybe some half drawer sliders.

I've got one of those combo small/tall drawer filing cabinets but it has two short, half-width drawers side by side on top. I found that they are just tall enough for r8 or 5c collets. I cut a piece of plywood that just fits in the top of the drawer and used a 1" hole saw to make 9 rows/4 wide for 36 holes. Allows me to store a full set of R8s in 1/32 steps with a few extra. Wish I could find more of the those cabinets.

Big wheels don't fall into small holes, lower rolling resistance. Good call keeping one set of wheels that swivel, much more control.

Like vid, but how about showing the REAR of the cart.. Show how wheels are mounted to frame /show details of frame and show the telescoping arm more in depth.
PS : How about standing on backside of item being shown, spin the cart around slowly... pausing to show details.

Like the idea. Filing cabinets can often be found cheap at auction and keeps the fabrication to a minimum. Recently I made some drawers for a workbench from some old safety deposit boxes I got off ebay and some ball bearing drawer slides. For the money, it wasn't worth the time and money sourcing material and fabricating my own drawers.

Interesting, do you have any problems with the weight capacity of the drawers? Used filing cabinets must be dirt cheep these days with everything going paperless.
See if your local state university has a warehouse sale, where they are unloading stuff unwanted by the departments. The universities around here have warehouse sales weekly and heavy duty filing cabinets, which look like they are from war times, go for a few dollars.
In Houston the local schools have auctions almost weekly. They always have file cabinets too, that is why I was wondering on their ability drawer weight capacity. I have been looking a Lista and Vidmar , but even at auction they go for ridiculous prices.
A filing cabinet drawer will typically hold the weight of paper crammed together tightly from front to back. If you have ever picked up a stack of paper 24 in thick, you realize, that much paper is very heavy. So with that in mind I would think filing cabinet drawers would hold a lot of weight.
The best thing about good filing cabinets are the hi quality draws. They will take the weight and the abuse of shop life.

Nice Job! Our shop is less than 500 square feet so we have make the best use of space we can. Combining a file cabinet and wielding cart is a good idea. In our latest video series making a low profile Sine Plate you will see my wielding helmet hanging behind the Moore Jig Grinder in the back ground of part 1. I do have a file cabinet put it is full of other things. Until we get a bigger shop I will have to hang things on the wall even though I would prefer to use cabinet space for a cleaner look.

Easier build than his angle iron cart would be using couple of 2x8s or 2x10s dimensional umber long enough to allow gas cylinder platform behind cabinet. Take bottom drawer out and screw cabinet to lumber. Bolt casters to bottom of lumber. Very strong, cheap, and quick to build. Office cabinets are great foundations for carts and equipment storage.

Yea, I would really like to build this. Wish I knew how you did this. You have provided zero info on how you built it. I can't tell how the gas tank is secured in the back.
I really like the idea but only if you are welding in your garage or shop, I use my welder all around my house so moving it is a pain, I need a very stable platform that can hold the tank and the welder in place in rough terrain, for that purpose I am looking in to buying old lawn mower and fabricate it
What were you using to cover your welding shield?( To keep it from getting dirty?
I would not think the top on a metal filing cabinet would be strong enough to hold a heavy welder. Did you reinforce it?
Nice cart on a par with Adam Savage's glue and small tool carts based on airline beverage cart. One plus the basic file cabinet is a lot cheaper then the airline beverage cart. I know I've seen a trash day when there are two sitting by the the road for free. The other option would be a thrift store but these are not free. I couldn't see what grade of wheels you used but my minimum would b 4" for the casters and 8" for the wheels.

Are you familiar with Askwoodman's channel ? he's the smoothest darndest texan maker dude, one of my favourites, always takes the time to build extra quality stuff with smart angles to whatever he's working on...

Nice idea, I have been trying to find information on the square wave 200, how long is the post flow, I heard it’s 15 seconds regardless of amp setting, is this true?
the post flow on the 200 is about 15 seconds when you run it on full output, the reason for that is to give the proper shielding on Nickel based alloys. They require a very long post flow. Remember, the 200 is an entry level TIG welder that gives you asymmetric output and frequency control. It's really not a big deal if you are not welding all day, every day.

I don't think my Miller 330 AB/P is going to fit on a filing cabinet... Hilariously, Miller did offer a cart option for it. I don't know who would pull around a 850 lb welder the size of a refrigerator, but it was possible.

One of the most important things for a welding cart is securing the bottle. You didn't show how you did that.
I also agree having drawers or in my case my third one I use a cabinet, so you can keep stuff clean from the shop environment.
I disagree highly about the big rear wheels. That is the first thing I ditched in my 2nd cart build, I HATED not being able to move the cart sideways. The telescoping beam is awesome, I made a tall fixed wire holder pole, but when it breaks, I will probably use your boom idea.
It needs some cable management. My everlast welder would fit nicely on that.
Metal tips and tricks. Was that a nonchalant way of aligning with WeldingTipsandTrick. lol
