- How to set up a Sea Monkey tank and tips to grow them to adulthood.
In this video I show how to start a new Sea Monkeys ocean zoo tank, with instructions and tips on a time lapse of their growth to adulthood under the microscope. Brine Shrimp are easy to hatch and culture so in this video I show you how to aerate their tank and use a heat mat / pad. I've been growing artemia colony for many years now so have plenty of experience with feeding them microalgae too.

Thank you so much this is so exciting!!🤩
@@amber-saffronmilliganx8738 You're welcome Amber, and thanks for supporting the channel :)
Congrats!! :) :)
should i buy sea monkeys or aqua dragons?
@BizzareBudgie i prefer sea-monkeys, they are better quality, larger, easier to keep, and i find grow faster
The winner of the Sea Monkey tank giveaway will be announced on Friday the 8th of April :)
That’s my birthday lol
I am so excited to see who won next week! I am 🤞! :)
🙏🙏🙏 I’m hoping 3rd time is the charm
alright
oo im excited!
Really intuitive dude! My sister was obsessed with sea monkeys when they “came out” in early 2000’s! It’s her 34th birthday today and got this set up as a surprise for her cause it’s just epically nostalgic! This vid will be her go to for proper SM care. Nicely done man! 🤙
They're definitely super cute when they're at the naupliar stage. I like to call the nauplii "little flippy flappers" because of how they swim
Haha I love that!
This is one of the best Seamonkey tutorials I have ever seen there’s so many tips in here that I’ve never seen online. I really hope you keep making content because to be honest, you really deserve more views and subscribers. Also I love the quality of the videos it looks great.
Cheers mate I appreciate that. I'll be making a video at some point with my top tips for sustaining a Sea Monkey colony so look out for that soon :)
@@pico-cosmos I'm trying to make my own sea monkey tank because i only bought the instant life eggs, is it ok if i use a polypropylene container with small stones
i also wonder if i can use uv light strips for the algae
I've delved so much into the world of sea monkeys and little animals after getting gifted a tank as a graduation present, and studying biology across several schools has helped me understand how to let my little friends thrive. this is my entry comment!
Ah that's awesome :D good luck for the giveaway!
@@pico-cosmos i have a question, how long does it takes for the sea monkeys to hatch, I bought the ocean zoo set, used spring water and put them in and how many hours or days does it take for them to hatch.
@Lucasisdumb usually 24-72 hours. Warmer temperatures will increase hatching speed. 26°C is ideal
I'm getting my first tank ready to start at the moment. I'm in the UK and my house gets very cold, even in summer, so I'm taking my time to make sure the water is the right temp (using heat mat and thermostat) and everything is set up correctly. I'm excited to put the packets in and see babies soon. Just gotta wait till I'm home from my holiday to see family next week! Thank you for the advise in your video it's very helpful to have it all in one place to come back to! Good luck to everyone in the give away! :)
That’s great to hear Kami :) which kind of tank are you starting? I was living up in Liverpool for a few months last year during the boreal winter and had to use a heat pad for my Sea Monkeys the whole time. It worked really well though so I’m sure you won’t be disappointed :)
@@pico-cosmos I have the Ocean Zoo Sea Monkey tank and an Aqua Dragons tank! Both are a week old now and are doing amazing!
@@kamimoonstar Oo which tank is doing better so far? In my experience Aqua Dragons kits have a LOT more eggs!
@@pico-cosmos So far my Aqua Dragons tank has significantly more babies, all varying in size. My Sea Monkeys however, there are about 20, are slightly bigger but they are the same age as the Aqua Dragons. I can sea a little algee growth in each tank but the water is clear in both. Can definitely see they are eating well as all have a dark greenish line through their bodies. Just very different in numbers and sizes. I'm recording their progress daily. They are just so cute and I love watching them
Your videos always put a smile on my face!! Sea Monkeys are so nostalgic for me and where always my favorite growing up I had almost every single tank you showed at one point in time….the watch was always my favorite!!
Oh that's awesome! sounds like you had a great childhood lol. I only ever had the Ocean Zoo tanks as a kid so having this little collection now is like fulfilling a childhood fantasy of fine. Do you have any tanks at the moment?
@@pico-cosmos thank you my parents definitely supported my love for Sea Monkeys! I don’t have one at the moment but I’ve been showing my two daughters your videos and they have been asking non stop to start one!! Guess the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree!!
I love the sea monkey parents you have outside the tank. They look proud. 😆 thanks for sharing!
Very well done tutorial! I certainly could have used your advice back in the 80s when I was a little kid getting his first Sea Monkey kit at Toys R Us. I remember being completely enamored by these little creatures and thinking they were actual aliens. I had no idea what I was doing and didn’t have the patience to read the instructions :). Fast forward 35 years and I’ve kept and bred all kinds of aquatic life. Your IG posts (and now RUclips videos) have rekindled my love of these cute “aliens.” Thanks for the great content!!
That's awesome to hear Josh :) I hope you manage to start up a new Sea Monkey tank soon to reconnect with your childhood
I just got my first sea monkey tank and it's a magiquarium tank. I hope these babies will grow up and I really enjoy ur videos too! I've been wanting to get a sea monkey tank for awhile now and I watch your videos whenever I'm free
Great choice! I love the magiquarium :)
What a legend. Mans made an entire tutorial for growing Sea Monkeys from start to finish. Great video mate.
Cheers mate!
Love this channel! Even though you aren't a child, I see how much you really love these creatures and you aren't afraid to admit it! I found this channel after I started another colony of brine shrimp. I've had a lot of brine shrimp, triop, and sea monkey colonies before and I decided to revisit the old hobby. My only complaint is that you don't upload enough! Good luck continuing your sea monkey journey!
Thanks!! I’ve been away for work for a few months but will start posting videos regularly again soon :)
this really helped me take care of my sea monkeys and its because of you that I got back into keeping them thank you so much and have a great day
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much! I love your videos! I almost bought a microscope but I though my husband would have killed me haha! It’s so nice to see them up close!
Thanks! Haha yeah I was a little hesitant to buy the microscope too.. but after a few months of thinking about it I eventually decided it was worth it. Totally glad I did too, it’s so fun to play around with lol
Love your content- can't wait to see more vids on kitschy sea-monkey tanks; my favorite is the movie theater
Ah yeah I have a big show tank that I’ll do an unboxing video for :) The only problem with it is that the tank sits on a tall plastic stand which makes it difficult to heat using my heat mats. I found a small USB heater on Aliexpress which should fit in the tank though, so I’m just waiting for that to arrive :)
Haven’t owned these since I was a little kid but your videos inspired me to bring them back. 😌
That's great Adam! good luck with your Sea Monkeys :)
Here from your TikTok. So glad to have found you as sea monkeys are a great memory from childhood!
Hey Irvin :) thanks for coming over from TikTok! When was the last time you had a Sea Monkey tank?
@@pico-cosmos probably around the end of middle school. My family got a fish fish tank shortly after and I toyed with the idea of trying to start a daphnia colony to get some live food for the fish but I never did it. I’d love to see an update of the daphnia you got in that fairy shrimp pack if you ever take a look at other sea creatures!
@@irvinalcaraz Ah I'll definitely be starting a daphnia tank some time later this year :D
I love sea monkeys. They've always been my special interest.
So nice to see this little community online who shares this weird hobby lol
Great video! I always learn something new from them. I raised sea monkeys as a child, had a couple microscopes too. At Christmas this year, I got Sea Monkeys and a new microscope! Reliving the fun, they are so entertaining. Thanks for the giveaway, I love the red color.
Oh that's awesome! I've definitely found that having the microscope makes the experience of Sea Monkeys so much more interesting. Good luck for the giveaway!
Hi! Thank you for posting this video and sharing your information. I love to watch Sea Monkeys. It's very relaxing even only on RUclips. Thanks!
You're welcome :)
Bringing back the memories Thank you
Hi! :) as you know from our Facebook group, I just started my 4th attempt! My hopes is to have 2 thriving tanks! I would love to be entered into the drawing! This video is SUCH a great resource! I wish this was around for me to watch when I started! :) You’re doing amazing! :) thanks bunches
Hey Sarah :) I'm glad you enjoyed the video! And good luck with your new tank, I'm sure it'll go swimmingly ;)
Researching videos for a Sea Monkey tank of my own. Your video has been extremely helpful.
Glad to hear that Randy :) Did you make a decision on which tank to get?
Looks like I'll be buying a heating pad soon before winter. 👌 Thanks for the tips.
Yup a heat pad is definitely a good idea! Though I did recently find a tiny USB heater with a built in thermostat that would work and is also the cheapest option. I've heard from a few people in the Sea Monkey community that it works pretty well too -

I have an old glow in the dark tank (90s), pink sea monkey watch and the Mars tank. The only active tank I have atm is my DIY 1.25L one. It is my desk buddy and we have wonderful times together. My sea monkeys have great insights when it comes to my research 🧐
I love the little plant you have in your DIY tank. I really need to start decorating mine a little more
@@pico-cosmos thank you! I hope they enjoy the greenery too haha. Interested to see your aquarium interior design style 💁♀️
You’re the one that got me started wanting Sea Monkeys of my own, and now I’m addicted!

Sea monkeys are so nostalgic for me, I love them!
When was the last time you had a tank? :)
Loved the video very well shot and learnt something new about seamonkeys!☺
Thanks Alexandria :) I appreciate the compliment
Thank you so much for this!! Just bought a sea monkey kit thanks to you. Just put the salt and eggs in now, I hope they hatch tomorrow!
Good luck!! :)
@@pico-cosmos thank you!! I put the eggs in 2 days ago and I’m slowly seeing babies! First it was 1 but now I think I saw 3 of them. I always thought the whole clutch of egg hatched at once, I guess not. Can I expect to see more babies or is this it?
I usually get around 15-30, so there are likely more to come soon 👍
Thanks for the video and all the tips!
Your big tank looks really great!
Finally my eggs arrived today and
Coincidentally I have everything I need to rig my own set up so I'm going to give it a go next week!
Wish the UK wasn't so cold, haha. At least I'm down south so as warm as I can get!
Good luck on the giveaway everyone and thanks for offering it!
Ah that big tank on the windowsill in this video has Beavertail Fairy Shrimp in it! They’re a freshwater species that grow up to 5cm. Love watching them swim around. I definitely recommend using a heat source for your tank if you’re in the UK! Will help on those bitter cold nights
@@pico-cosmos that's awesome! Another thing I can google obsessively! Thanks 😁
Thank you for this video, I've had Sea Monkeys before but unfortunately they passed away. I'm just about to re start my tanks (Mars & Castle) and going to follow your video instructions! So thank you again for the video! 😊
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions that you need help with :) I love the design of the Mars & Magic castle tanks but never had them before. I should really pick them up some time!
Update: I set up my tanks following your instructions and I have heaps of happy healthy babies swimming around! Thank you again! ☺️
@@melissaharber666 So glad to hear that :D
I feed my sea monkeys smaller amounts throughout the week too. I definitely noticed better results with doing it that way.
100%. It makes more sense that they're fed an appropriate amount frequently rather than a whole lot at once. I also have a feeling that any food sitting in the tank for too long can 'rot' and cause an overgrowth of bad bacteria
Great Video! Can't wait to binge more!
Thanks!
Great tips! I always have problem keeping them alive and I would like to give it a try again.
You definitely should! Overfeeding and unstable water temperatures are probably the 2 most common causes for a failed tank, so if you fix those I'm sure you'll have success :)
love your videos! you’re my favourite youtuber❤️
Haha thanks! I definitely have a lot to improve on but I appreciate the comment :)
I have got sea monkeys today!! I use the magic castle! Thanks for the tips! ❤
I can’t get enough of these.

Good luck with it, and let me know if you ever have any questions :)
Here from Tiktok and thanks for the tips! I’ve had my sea monkey colony since September 2021 i went from having lots and lots of sea monkeys down to one female. There are lots of babies but they don’t ever seem to make it to adulthood. Would you be able to make a video on tips on how to maintain your sea monkey colony? Thanks!
Hey Meishah, welcome to the channel! The issue you mentioned is quite a common experience and I am currently working on a video that addresses this problem :) It should be out some time next week

Great tutorial! Literally the best one I've seen! I can find only heat pads for reptiles. Are those ok to use?
great video bro!!
I have a Sea Monkeys on Mars tank I bought after I saw your watch video posted on reddit. Now I want to get a moon one and shuttle one.
I feel like becoming obsessed with the different tanks is quite common in this community 😅 Good luck finding the moon & shuttle tanks! Took me a few months to find them but I'm stoked I finally did
Greetings fellow Kiwi :) Love the channel!. I've been hatching BB shrimp for an alternate feeding source for my fresh water fish for a couple of months now and although I know a thing or two (and made a lot of mistakes along the way!) it's an always learning process. I look forward to your next episode
Hey mate! glad you enjoyed the video :) I'll be making a DIY brine shrimp tank video at some point in the future for people who are interested in culturing artemia so they can feed the adults to their fish as a live food source. Is this something you do? or do you just feed them the newly hatched nauplii?
@@pico-cosmos I'm all about DIY where ever possible and owning a 3D printer makes this process a lot easier too, so yes, I would definitely be interested in your DIY shrimp tank! I feed newly hatched BBS to my fish but would love to grow them out to adulthood and am kind of trying to do that now by having a 'grow out' tank (read: plastic container with a lid) that's just sitting outside at the moment that I dump my hatching container (with about 100ml left from 1L and many hundreds of BBS) into after about the 3-4th feeding so always adding to the grow tank. Took inspiration from this KISS YT video by David Ramsey 'Raising Brine Shrimp Outdoors 2012 part 1' go check it out if you're curious.
@@pulsta Just watched the video - really interesting, I'm sure it would work fine if you lived somewhere warm (NZ summer would probably be fine) but I'd be surprised if it worked here outdoors during the rest of the year. Have you had any luck raising them do adulthood yet with this method?
@@pico-cosmos Glad you liked the video - it really piqued my interest in growing the BBS out and so I started my version of it at the start of this month, which as you've noted, due to the changing of seasons (I live in the Waikato), is not ideal and is most likely the reason I'm not seeing any adults or juveniles due to the current day/night temp. fluctuations. I do like David's KISS approach though and only wish I had discovered it back at the start of spring. Any way, I'm likely to bring the grow tank indoors and add a spare aquarium heater which should improve things, regardless - I'm keen to see where you're headed with this as I'll likely adopt some of your techniques and learnings as and when you post them :)
@@pulsta Let me know how your experiments go :) There's not a ton of great info about this stuff online, and I still have plenty to learn myself. Good luck with your brine shrimp culture journey 🤙I'm sure the heater will definitely help
Awesome video it will help me out with my tank
Thank you for making this video I’m planing to start growing my own sea monkeys
Awesome! Any idea which tank you’ll get?
I am definitely going to try this
Another great video John!
Thanks 😊🙏
Bro i cannot make this shit up. I'm a kiwi. I went to Kmart couple nights ago and got that fucken 15 dollar sea monkie tank. I did the 24 hour dechlorinator. Threw in the sea monkies the next day and they hadent hatched so I googled sea mpnkie tank setup guide and started watching. One min in and you said I went to a Kmart in nz and got the 15 dollar kit. Bro I tripped out. What a coincidence. Dope Channel bro earned a sub ahahaha.
Ah that's amazing! How are your Sea-Monkeys doing now? Hope they're still alive!
Have 4 tanks going at the moment, advice really helped alongside your advice for the added extras! Only other thing I have is a plug in air pump to aerate the tanks with ziss ZAD 12 air stones and air flow valves would highly recommend!
Oh awesome, which tanks do you have? Yeah a plug in air pump is definitely ideal! I'll eventually do a DIY brine shrimp tank tutorial video with a proper air pump 👌
Only the basic ones for the uk can’t get my hands on any of the vintage ones sadly, but I have the Mars, magic castle ocean zoo and the ocean treasure tank your video made me want it :)
@@CP-ed7cv Nice! Love the Ocean Treasure tank, it's so good for viewing them. I'm team skinny tanks all the way lol
I’m the same wasn’t sold on it at first but they’re 5 days old now and can see so many! Guess it will be survival of the fittest lol
@@CP-ed7cv Yeah I think most Sea Monkey tanks are probably only large enough for around a maximum of 20 adults, so not all the litter buggers can make it unfortunately

You're welcome and good luck :)

Cool!
I’m really thinking about getting a seamonkey tank. They seem like intricate little creatures
You totally should! A lot of people struggle to raise them on their first attempt, but if you keep the tank warm & don't overfeed them you should be sweet :) Let me know if you have any questions 🤙

I'm pretty sure that my brother and I had that Sea Monkeys On The Moon kit when we were kids.
nice video.
That looks so cool

Can you do a Aqua Dragons tank review? I just got a Aqua dragons tank from a reptile shop.
Update
It's day 13 the colony is thriving and some of them are smaller than the others, and I've started to see babies show up. None of the really big ones seem to be sexually different I've never seen a single mating pair and I'm starting to think that their food has eggs in it.
There's a lot like a lot of them and there seems to be algae on the bottom for a little while now despite there being no substrate (deep sea habitat model).
By the way your care videos have been helping me a lot thank you so much love your channel!
I have like that's blue and pink magic castle tank and there's baby's and some eggs that still haven't hatched the adult one are doing well I recommend
I love the sea monkey vids
Cheers David :)
I will definitely follow all your instructions. Is the give away for sea monkeys still available? My 6 yr old son would really love to pet all of them. 😊
I have a question can u use direct lamp light and do you have to put the light low or high? And i used a work desktop lamp By the way.
Hello I bought a sea monkey magiquarium but after I added distilled water and pack 1 and stirred I added pack 2 but it seemed to have some sort of blue dye does anyone know what the blue stuff is
I have a question.can you use purified water and where do you buy distilled water and I might start to keep sea monkeys but I’m not sure if I’m ready
good video
My colony is small but coming along nicely. Except I’m finding white flakes at the bottom of their tank. Should I be concerned??
I hope you can help me I added pack 1 Sunday stir and added second pack passed 24 hours and added pack2 BUT I forget to stir and now in day 3 no hatch …. My kids been checking them out every day are mine dead? Becuase I didn’t stir after adding pack
2? Please advise
Hii! I'm buying a kit that not has a tank on is own but have everything else (packets 1,2,3)
I'm planning on using my own tank, is there a chance i'll be sort out of water purifiers (packets 1), can i add other aquarium salt? If so what you recommends
I’d recommend just using a 300ml glass jar.
Making larger Sea-Monkey aquariums is difficult and requires experience
You picture a tank at 4:06, do you know where you got it? I have looked all over amazon for something like it and have not yet found something similar enough.
It’s a blue planet Betta + tank. Don’t think they sell it anymore
Great video. My sea monkeys haven’t hatched yet but I have. Quick question. I know they don’t sleep but do they need constant light? I keep them in indirect sunlight during the day and they are in the warmest room that stays at a constant temp. But will the darkness hurt them? Thanks
Darkness is fine :) I have a lamp pointed at my tank for 16 hrs a day and the rest of the time it’s dark
I just bought the Mars tank. I’ll be putting the eggs in tonight at 7.
🙌 good luck!
