My dad just got me one of these kits for Easter. I’m 34. My dad is the greatest. 😅
Thank you for the info! ❤
im getting my first tank ever @61 ,,,the shrimpys dont judge
im am 60 this June!!!! my grand son gave one of these kits and i am super exitied to start the journey with the wee lad he showed me how to use the youtube to do more research for us!!!!!!
@isabellablack2325 aw that’s really precious ❤️ I hope you enjoy bonding with him over these small pets
@@isabellablack2325 That’s so sweet! I hope for many fun bonding experiences between you and your precious grandson. 🤗
@@rustyholt6619 You’re so right, no judgment whatsoever! 🤗❤️
I've been caring for sea monkeys for over 6ish months now, and even some of these tips are still helpful for me to know 😂 I'll definitely have to check out one of the 3d printed lids soon!
It’s important to always have a teachable spirit :) I still have a lot to learn about these little guys too
@@pico-cosmosI was around four and I had sea monkeys and i had them for a month and a ammonia spike happens we had to put the sea monkeys down and I said “ well the sharks have food “🤣🤣
I love Sea Monkeys! I had them when I was a kid I kept them under my parents plant light in the laundry room and kept them alive for 2 years. I didn't even know you could get them anymore, but now that I do I went and got a kit. I might get your special lid before we go on vacation this summer to keep them warm and aerated.! Great idea!
Great custom 3-D Printed lids to allow for the light and filter/bubbles for air into the water. Cool to see that mother Sea-Monkey eating the algae in that one view. You are right, feeding too much too soon can be bad for the tank and brine shrimp. Good tip about the nursery for the babies. Cool Sea-Monkey Figure too. Great tips as usual, thanks!
Omg this is such a throwback...I loved seamonkeys when i was a kid, and they used to grow so big!! They always ended up dying though...now I'm inspired to try raising them again 😂
Excellent, John. Great tips and a nice introduction to the new custom lids you’re offering. (Very practical and they look great!) Tip number 10 was my favorite.
Thanks Tod! I’m really happy with how the lids have come out :D
This is great information and I love the 3d printed lids to help with the accessories!
These are all great tips!!! Amazing video once again.
Excited!! I have absolutely no luck 😂😂 so I hope to try again using this guide!
I had a lot of trouble my first few tries too 😅 I’m sure these tips will help : )
Good luck, So I was lucky ❤️🙏🏽… Unfortunately, most of my sea monkeys died because they were already old and didn't really have any offspring, so I added a few more eggs. The little ones are now big and I hope to see their offspring soon ❤️🙏🏽.
Happy to hear that your custom lids are finally up for sale! That was an awesome idea and I'm glad you ended up following through with it. I still have yet to get a new one due to upcoming changes in my life but you bet I'm snagging one as soon as I'm able to! Hopefully they're still available by then
I’m also in the process of developing another one that has a light built into the lid :) should hopefully be ready in the next week or two 👍
😱 These 3D lids are really handy 👍🏻
So many great tips, thank you 🥰
Never a bad video from this channel. Love your videos man!!!
🙏 thanks Dominic :)
Superb video! Beautiful and informative. Thank you
Like the videos but 19 dollars for a printed lid for a sea monkey tank? Why not buy a whole bigger tank with a lid with holes twice the size for the same price? 😂 this is getting out of control haha
LOVE the new lids!!!!
Thanks! I’m really happy with how they’ve come out. I’m in the process of making another style with a built in light 👌
Love the lid designs 👍❤️
another awesome video! thanks for the tips!
Hope it was helpful :)
Great video
I just want to say your so helpful thank you so much
😊🙏
I love your content... fun delivery and really informative! Brine shrimp could be one of the best pets out there for busy folks!
Absolutely, but that first month or so that it takes to get them to adulthood can be a little tricky, especially if it's your first time. Once that's out of the way, and especially once you have algae established, just feed them and top up the water as necessary. They're probably easier to care for than the average houseplant.
@@jic1 I kind of equate them to Venus fly trap care as well. I love aquatic things and plant things lol
@@questionnaireii1412 Venus fly traps became much easier after I discovered that they both require a winter rest period, and can safely overwinter outdoors in my local climate. After that, they just sat in a bucket of peat on my patio for several years.
Wonderful video! Love all these tips! Hopefully I'll have some of my own soon too! :3
Thank you for these tips, cant wait to be able to finally have sea monkeys !
Love the ingenious lid design! I'd be careful sharing accessories - like the leash - between tanks. They can spread bad things too. Thanks for the great review of the volcano tank!
Had our sea monkeys for 2 weeks now. Hope they thrive just like yours. Excellent tips 👍🏽
Brings back memories ❤❤❤
Thank you for this video your content is great
🙏
That is amazing 🤩
My first ever sea monkeys hatch and I've counted up to 10-15 I'm very excited to see there growth
i just found this channel and absolutely fell down the rabbithole XD great tips, it is easy to see in hindsight now, after having kept my own colony and watched it dwindle down to almost nothing. I'd love to see a vid on triops, if that's ever in the cards 😂
Will definitely do Triops in the future :)
Your custom lids are CLAWESOME‼️🦞💪🦐🦀

Is the plastic tank important? We've some really nice glass containers which would make fantastic sea monkey homes (and I can then use the plastic tank as a nursery!) Thanks.
Glass works fine too :) it’s a better insulator than plastic, so it helps to keep water temperature changes more gradual which is good 👍
GUESS WHAT! I GOT MY OWN SEA MONKEY TANK!! i got them last sunday (1st october) and ive already got some algae growing from the looks of it. they hatched on the 3rd of october and the mini heater i ordered came today!
Great job! 🥳 it sounds like you’re taking the right steps 🙌 good luck with raising them
I'm amazed that you got algae so quickly, it took me a good few months. Once you've got algae established, caring for your Sea-Monkeys becomes a breeze.
@@jic1 i think its algae at least. it has a greenish colour to it and its all around the edges of the bottom of the tank
Thank you for the advise for a heater. I knew they needed heat but I figured that if I turned up my thermostat that I could make it warm enough for them. It's been a week and I'm still not seeing anything, so I found my way here. I can't put them by a window because all I have are drafty sliding doors and it's winter, which should have been another reason to get a heater.
This is helpful my teacher got sea monkeys thanks!🐒🐟
Hey John! Wanted to thank you for all your tips on hatching and raising brine shrimp! Using your advice, I set up a little 7L tank with a little heater and air line (though I needed a bigger heater than the USB one lol!), and now I have dozens of babies swimming happily! I tried with sea monkeys first, but alas, the packets had absorbed moisture and were full of goop, so I ended up getting some artemia salina eggs intended for brine shrimp hatcheries. I have some astaxanthin on the way to feed them too, so hopefully soon they’ll be cute and pink! Thank you for all your advice 🥰🥰🥰
I wanted to ask, do you know if anything can share a tank with them? I know some aquarium snails can tolerate surprisingly high salinities, have you ever seen any in a brine shrimp tank?
That's exciting! Good luck with your new tank. I'd highly recommend trying to culture live microalgae to feed them to increase your chances of success 👍 In my video review of the Sea-Monkeys Big Show tank I show some aquatic snails :) and my video review of the Spongebob Plenty O Plankton set shows copepods which also work as tank mates.
@@pico-cosmos thanks for your advice :) I ended up buying some live microalgae (nannochloropsis- I read that brine shrimp eat it in the wild!) and using that to kick start a culture, since it’s winter here and I can’t really leave the windows open. My sea monkeys seem to be thriving on it, and my culture is looking green as all heck! I’ve set up some purple grow lights to hopefully encourage more algae growth in the tank as well 💖
Thank you for your channel! We have now successfully raised our second generation of sea monkeys in a healthy sustainable tank (with a USB heater only)
🙌 Good job! Glad to hear they’re doing well :D
awesome
thanks for re-awakening my desire for these little guys as an adult 😂
Thank you very much for the video and the tips. I fed my sea monkeys often, so from the fifth day onwards I fed them a few drops of the liquid food once a day (for example 4 drops in 4 teaspoons of water) and then I put one or two drops in their mouth I've done it in the tank, now I hardly have to feed them at all anymore, I store the finished food in the fridge, mix it with warm water and then put it in the tank, I've also put yeast in it, it really smells now... 🤢🤮 but whatever, They're still doing pretty well, unfortunately I only have brown algae in the water but I'll get rid of them somehow.
Haha I’m glad to hear they’re doing well! Yeah I also have some of that brown algae in one of my tanks, it’s not particularly nice to look at but the sea-monkeys seem to like it 🤷♂️
When is the best point to add the heater and filter ? I’ve just put my eggs in today October 15th am I best to wiat till they hatch to add them or should I put them both in from the start ?
You can put them both in now :)
I really like your video's!! ❤😊 one question: Can you overfeed with phytoplankton? I've been growing my own phytoplankton and feeding it to some adults I purchased.
+ I added a small container in the aquarium with the adults as a nursery. I put some eggs in and they hatched almost two weeks ago, so cool. They seem not to progress though, they stay very small. I keep on trying, with your tips I will succeed!🎉
Yes I think you can overfeed with phytoplankton. My recommendation is to feed them enough algae that they can clear in one day 👍 Try adding a heater to increase growth speed
I used to just grow them in a lunch container cause I use them for live food for my big aquarium sometimes but I just recently bought an actual sea monkey tank!
Hi John, can you please tell me how you'd go about cleaning the tanks of their poop?
Thanks!
I have just bought 1 heater for my tank and bought a spare tank for a nursery tank as you suggested - though at the moment I only have one heater.
what life stage do you think heat is most important? Shall my heater go in with the babies or with the slightly larger older ones? - I will eventually buy another heater
Heater is more important for babies. Once they reach adulthood they’re more tolerant to stresses
Hi,I’m sorry that I haven’t seen you channel for some time but I will try to keep up with your videos.I still have been thinking if sea monkeys would be a good animal for me to care for.maybe I will soon.have a good day/afternoon/night😁
you should do a hatching on clam shrimps
Hi! Question for you, with the aerator, does it come with the mechanism that allows you to control air flow or does that need to be bought separately? Thanks for making this video to help me to teach my son to care for his aquadragons🙂
The ones I sell on my website come with an air control valve 👍
So I got one of the pumps you suggested to buy in your Amazon link and it is way too powerful for my tiny tank with no way to turn it down. I would like to find a pump I can use for the regular volcanic tank. Any suggestions for that? I can restrict the air flow from the pump I bought, I have no idea if that would damage it in the long run. Which I guess doesn't really matter cause I can't return it anyway.
Can you do a video about how to set up a nursery tank? What kind of salt do you use and how much?
The easiest way is just to set up a second Sea-Monkey tank. If you’re interested in making a DIY brine shrimp tank I have a guide on my website :)
You should try the amazing live sea monkeys pirate gold
I have been getting into trying brine shrimp out but am having a hard time producing algea. I live in a very shaded area so the windows never really get sunlight. I would prefer not to buy a light. would zoo plankton coral food be good for them?
Good tips Jon. I do most of those and still lost my entire colony. The lids look cool, but I was wondering if added air holes on the sides would help with air flow???
If i want to use a more bigger tank. Is it safe to use sand or stones ? Does it require a filter ? Thank you
Hi John! I was wondering, if growing algae is essential for a thriving sea monkey colony, can you pre-grow them and then add the eggs later? Would that be viable?
What do I do if I live in a place that isn't near the sea at all, I doubt there are any saltwater algae particles in the air here.
I think yes, algae is essential for a healthy Sea-Monkey tank long-term. You could try to grow algae, but tbh the best way is to just set up a Sea-Monkey tank and let it happen naturally. I live very close to the ocean so I don’t have any experience keeping Sea-Monkeys inland. I’d recommend just trying your best to see what happens. You can also purchase live algae online 👍
Is there a specific distilled/spring water you prefer Tre most over others? I’m genuinely curious since there are so many different brands and just water bottled water in general
I don’t think it makes a difference
So, kinda unusual, but our home has no natural light in it. Would our electric lights be good enough for them? All our windows are blocked off for heating reasons, too cold to put them outside as we are in Alaska. Thanks.
When should I first start using a grow lamp? Can I use it right after they hatch?
Yup! I use mine straight away :)
Excellent! Thank you for shooting all the awesome videos.! They're both funny and extremely educational. Nice work!
How long do they take? I don’t think mine are working? Thinking I might need to start again
Wait…is that an enormous water bear on the shelf behind you?! Can we see it up close? ❤❤
Lol yeah it’s 3D printed
Cool! I just ordered an ocean volcano kit, heater and air stone, going to start the lid printing while I wait for them to arrive! ❤
I have a question about algae. How long is it supposed to take for algae to appear? I have a grow light above the tank (original tank from kit) but I wonder if the plastic lid stops alot of the light penetration from enough light to grow it
It can take anywhere from 2 days to 2 months. Open your windows to encourage more air flow :)
@@pico-cosmos can you do a video specifically on the airline? I have some worries as I've heard that tiny air bubbles might be swallowed by sea monkey that they starve and (2) tiny air bubbles on algae appearing might mean ammonia as opposed to good oxygenation
I've never had any issues with small air bubbles and brine shrimp before. Air bubbles on the algae is probably because they produce oxygen @@jet_GraveWhisperer
ive never owned sea monkeys and ive always seen them in the little bare tanks so im curious- is it okay to put substrate and/or aquatic plants in with them? or does it need to be completely empty?
A sand + fine gravel substrate works well :) plants are difficult because they need to tolerate the salty water
@@pico-cosmos thanks so much! ive been wanting to start up a dwarf shrimp tank but i live in a dorm so these guys will do haha
I have attached one of those taps to my usb air pump and they don’t seem to last long, I’m onto pump three now.
I’ve done a bit of looking around and I’ve seen people put a T piece in line between the pump and air stone and then have the tap coming off the T piece to serve as a bleed valve.
Yeah I’ve heard people mention that bleed valves are helpful. Tbh I’ve been using one for over a year and it’s still running well 🤷♂️
So I was wondering if you could do a video hatching these at different temperatures as an experiment to see witch promotes the best growth health and longevity 🤞🏼🤞🏼 like I mean 104 F• 80F• 90 F• 70F• all the way down to 20F • with the heater
@pico-cosmos can i use diluated sea water at 1.102% w/v sodium chloride and purified water ingredients from a spray bottle of a hydrating nasal care sea water solution (Hydrasense) as purified water for my sea-monkeys ?
Please don’t say I’m the only person who bought their kids sea monkeys for a summer project and is now completely invested….. new tank, air pump and heater all set up in my bedroom 🤣🤣🤣
I have another question I only have full sunlight windows what is best to do? X
Full sunlight would likely make the tank too hot. I’d recommend keeping them somewhere in the shade with a lamp pointed at the tank 👍
@@pico-cosmos I did this and have small air pump and have the heater set to 26 degrees. And they still all died. I set it all up again with a new set and they hatched but died day 5. Have you any tips on keeping them alive? I’ve some de ironised water as I can’t get any distilled will that help for my last attempt?
You might have already answered this somewhere, but what water treatment do you use for setting up a nursery tank or second tank? Do you have to buy more sea monkey water purifier packets, or is there a cheaper way to make the water safe?
I found one tablespoon of coarse sea salt to every 500ml of water works just fine. As he said in the video, use bottled water.
The easiest way is to just buy a second Sea-Monkey tank yeah. You can do a DIY tank, but it’s more complicated and takes some practice
@@pico-cosmos As somebody who once attempted a completely from scratch tank (i.e. generic brine shrimp eggs, no official Sea-Monkey products at all) and failed miserably after several attempts, you're right (although I've got the rest of the eggs in the freezer, so I might give it another go someday now that I know more). However, I found simply transferring Sea-Monkeys from my 'official' colony to my DIY tank to be incredibly easy. Maybe I was just lucky, I don't know. I think an important factor for success was that I took a couple of pipettefuls of the sludge from my established tank and put them in the new one, so I had a head start on establishing algae and other useful microorganisms.
@jic1 that definitely would’ve helped 👌 the algae and ciliates help soo much
How do you aerate the tank without buying all the stuff?
Is it actually neccesary to add new salt after some time?
Can i clean it and im also running out of food there is a lot of algea on the bottom which i dont mind its just the algea on the glass that's annoying cause i cant see into it
thank you for the tips! I've got a question.. why are some of my sea monkey's leg black in color?
Sounds like they might have black spot disease 😬 you could try increasing the salinity and adding some more calcium into the tank 👌
Do you have a good salt to water ratio? Google keeps changing and it doesnt taste as salty as my seamonkey tanks
Exact salinity isn’t particularly important for brine shrimp - anywhere from 15-50 ppt should work fine. I usually aim around 25ppt with my DIY tanks 👍
I found that one tablespoon of coarse sea salt (chosen because that's what I had in my kitchen) to every 500ml of water worked just fine when I set up my second tank. The shrimp I transferred from my original were perfectly happy.
Hello! Im bought a heater (mini) is the 16 celcius english celcius?
Yeah you want to set the temperature to 26°C
My mom would never let me have them as a kid so when I got my first paycheck as an adult I bought them 😂. I kept them alive for two years until the heater went out in my house and unfortunately they froze.
Heyo! I'm the guy that asked you if I could make a discord. I estimated 2 weeks, but apparently, I only took 2 days to make it ready. I hit you up with another e-mail with the invite.
Do sea monkies grow their own algae or do i have to start it? I legit am about to hatch the eggs and Im nervous because i only have the tank and nothing else and i dont think ill be able to buy any accessories sadly
Is it crazy for a grown man like myself of 33 wanting to grow sea monkeys and nurture them as a hobby? Even over like….owning fish lol?
I bought the Handsandrais Aquarium USB Air Pump on your Amazon link and it's too strong. Where do you get an air control valve to lower the bubbles?
Should also be listed in that Amazon link 👌 they’re available at any pet store that sells fish aquarium supplies too 👍
Great video! These lids look great, is there any chance of sharing the files? I would be happy to pay for them
I’ve added a link to the STL files on the web page :) let me know how you print comes out!
@@pico-cosmos thanks so much!
I was going to say why do people not put fairy tails or sea monkeys in like a 5G to 15G tank it would be cool to see how big they get
Larger tanks don’t make the shrimp any bigger unfortunately :/
Can you do a video like this for triops
I want to keep them in a bigger tank. What water do I need to put in it?
I have a brine shrimp culturing guide on my website :) it has all the info for making a DIY tank
Do these tips also work for brine shrimp?
These are brine shrimp. So yes it works.
Can you do how to take care triops videos to please😁
This man knows everything about sea monkeys (expert)
Haha I definitely don’t know everything about them 😅 there’s always more to learn
I have a very important question! Can sea monkeys be put into bigger tanks? Not with other fish, of course. I have a tank with a fountain that I really want to use for sea monkeys, and I want to make sure it's ok to do before trying
Hey how can i get some of the gunk out if the tank my kid never took care of them so i knoe have them in my room with me they had babies and just asking for some help on where to buy the cool stuff for them lol
Where can i get the small valves only?
Watching this as an aqua dragon (Artemia Salina) owner 😅
Haha they’re similar products :) I’m working on an AD video at the moment 👌
is it ok to mix the instant eggs with spoon?! the water turned blue after mixing
Yeah that’s fine :) There’s blue dye in the egg packet - it’s harmless 👍
love your vids!@@pico-cosmos
hi! asking if the sea monkeys make eggs asexually is it only girl seamonkeys?@@pico-cosmos
I was gifted a sea monkey kit for Christmas after asking for a few years as a joke, but I want to do my best to take care of them! Is it best to take care of them in the tank in the kit? Or could I step it up and repurpose a small beta fish tank? Around 3 or 4 gallons, I think. Im open to suggestions and ideas!
Use the tank that came with your kit 👌 larger tanks are much more difficult and take a lot of experience
hi may i know how to setup the water for nursery? water parameters?
I just used a second Sea-Monkey kit. If you’re interested in making a DIY tank, I have a brine shrimp culturing guide on my website
Well now I can make my sea monkeys happy
If you place your tank near an indirect source of sunlight, do you still need the grow light? Isn't that what the sun is for?
In my experience the more light that algae receives the fast it grows. Direct sunlight is actually ideal for algae, but it’s too hot for the shrimp
Are grow lights safe for sea monkeys?? I don't know if the plant light's radiation will harm them.. I know that these lights will help with the growth of algae..
I used to really want sea monkeys. I just remembered why I ended up not getting them. There wouldn’t be any way for them to get their indirect sunlight…and now I have a cat, and wouldn’t want him near them lol.
John, I have a question. I have Sea Monkeys that are mating and have darkish egg sacs. I have another female not mating and her egg sac is white. I actually had another female with a white egg sac, and one day, I looked and there were babies everywhere! I'm guessing she live birthed them, as her egg sac was empty? So my question is, Is this likely the asexual type of reproduction? With the white egg sac, and no male attached? Thank you for your kind help! Your videos have made my Sea Monkeys on Mars quite happy!
Female Sea-Monkeys will live birth their young when environmental conditions are favourable. As far as I’m aware, the method of reproduction (sexual or pathernogenetic) doesn’t influence whether they produce cysts or live birth 👍
@pico-cosmos Thank you Sir!
Can i use diluated sea water at 1.102% w/v sodium chloride and purified water ingredients from a spray bottle of a hydrating nasal care sea water solution (Hydrasense) as purified water for my sea-monkeys ? Thank you
I already used tap water! Are they gonna be okay?
Were they okay?
what happens if you have the air pressure too high, I dont have a way to adjust the pressure and the pump is the only way I can aerate my monkeys.
