Someone in that factory was a genius. They took all the tiny bits of the plastic from making the tanks that would have been thrown out and sold a spoonful of trash for $1.00 ($.50s/h) because they called them “Sea Diamonds”.
I've worked in plastic moulding shops and you would be surprised to know what they asked us to do. Like mixing baby oil with vinyl for the vinyl to smell like baby powder. (No, before someone asks, neither the powder nor oil is made from babies 😅)
You know, I’ve always wondered... what if the intent with Sea Diamonds was that, after sinking, they’d stay for a while and grow a light coating of aquarium floor algae? Then, in a few weeks, the water would evaporate, suspending little bits of food-covered particulate in the tank for sea monkeys to try and “burrow” at, which they sometimes do when there’s not enough suspended microalgae in the water. I wonder if a smarter modern approach like a neutrally buoyant algae-covered tetherball would capture the imagination of sea monkeys “playing” with their environment.
I think it was just a way to sell some of the plastic waste leftover from molding the tanks. It looks a lot like the plastic pieces that hold model car or plane parts together in a sheet in the box, which would occur when molding the sea monkey products as well.
I love hearing the little history of stuff like the illustration of the mail order lid, its crazy how things we take for granted can have large stories
I was absolutely terrified of SeaMonkeys for several years haha. The box art promising these strange humanoid sea creatures that could come out and interact with you gave me chills. I remember a box having a picture of a real child with a SeaMonkey sitting on their shoulder. 😂 But when I was about 10 or 11 years old this was my first and only SeaMonkey kit I ever owned. I foolishly took it to school one day and a girl in my class picked them up, tipped them over, and spilled half of the contents on to the floor. I was devastated and am still salty about it more than 20 years later lol 😂 thanks to your channel I am treating myself to another chance to keep SeaMonkeys.

This is the first Picocosmos video I watched (back when it was uploaded under your first channel name, btw). But this wasn't my first kit. It was more like my 20th. And I was SO disappointed by the "Sea Diamonds" - something I'd been curious about for years, due to the fanciful description in the old manuals. These shapeless bits of dull plastic were nothing like a diamond or cut gem, which I was expecting, & my sea-monkeys didn't cavort or interact in any way with them. This was the first sea-monkey product I threw away in anger, actually. And this coming from someone who (back in the fifth grade!) somehow got over the discovery that sea-monkeys themselves are nothing like their promotional illustrations. The fun of hatching & raising them is something I can't explain, but totally buy into, whereas these "Sea Diamonds" really bothered me, & I didn't like the feeling that I'd been scammed. However, I did like the unusual day-glo tank, so it wasn't a complete loss. Sorry for the rant, I just really couldn't justify marketing which was THAT misleading. Still love sea-monkeys to this day, though. And this awesome channel!

That's the old manual from the 80s/early 90s but maybe they didn't talk about Sea-Diamonds except in the catalog section. And yeah, the large scoop was for adults.
The clear lid with a removable scope is best
Question : if your sea monkeys are doing well, would you recommend putting in the sea diamonds if you got them?
I wouldn't as sea diamonds are just bits of unused plastic that the factory had.
I was just wondering when you’ll be posting another video! My sister had the first one
Ah yeh these videos take me a while to make 😅 I’m trying to get faster at the process tho
The water purifier isnt needed or is it. The aqua Dragons only have 2 packets not 3.
It is needed. Aqua Dragons just include the water purifier salts in the egg packet
I had a set exactly like this growing up in the mid-to-late 2000s. Did any Ocean Zoo sets come in this colour and also come with Sea Diamonds?
There were other kits with similar tanks, eg. the ocean of light kit
I love monkeys
This was the exact kit my gram bought me when we visited a museum
Cute! Do you remember when that was?
@@pico-cosmos maybe like 20 years or so ago .
Aren't you afraid that the grow lights will turn the shuttle ship yellow?
I don't think they're strong enough tbh. It's still super white now
I have never seen those stickers 🙃
Thank you😘😘😘😘😘
I guess the "sea diamonds" are good for them as a substrate to filter the poop to the bottom, and surface area for algea to grow on? I guess?
Man that humanoid thing in the thumbnail is so deep in the uncanny valley that it makes the Mariana trench look like a tide pool
😂😂😂😂😂😂 love this comment
i have never, EVER seen a seal of aproval on any toys before.
nope, never saw one of those stickers on any of the Sea Monkey products or on any other toy here in Pennsylvania
Xd I love this channel my sea monkeys just reappeared but it’s only two one has a very long *possibly poo * tail
I had the sea diamonds when I was a kid haha I sent away like 2 bucks in the mail or something
How do you clean them out so it doesn’t smell? There’s a lot in there 😅
Lol I’ve heard a few people complain that their Sea-Monkeys smell. It’s not something I’ve ever noticed with mine. Maybe I’m just nose-blind to it though and all my visitors think my house wreaks 😂
@@pico-cosmos my sea monkeys have never smelled either lol
Can I smell your Sea-Monkeys?
I just discovered this channel today....sea monkeys are awesome OwO I love Brine Shrimp I own weird critters
I love the little double ended spoon. Do they sell just those?
Unfortunately not, they're just the older style which has now been updated to the single scoop
@@pico-cosmos so sad. They are very neat spoons!!
Had this one second. My first was a red bottom
those look cool though
I remember those. I wanted to see them so bad I could taste it but never got there.
Where did you get all of them.
Usually ebay or they’re donated to the channel :)
I love you for fish during that time
I don't think that specific sticker is that common but there's tons of oddities like that on U.S. toys, if some magazine or what have you gives out an award that's absolutely going on the box
How long does it take for sea monkeys to grow?
2-6 weeks depending on tank conditions
Were would I buy plasma iii, please?
How do I find the algae you feed them
Algae grows naturally in the tank :) how long have you had yours going for?
@@pico-cosmos about three weeks
@@righthandwrestling9276 ah it often takes 4-6 weeks to show up in your tank. It’ll come eventually
@@pico-cosmos gotcha. Thanks 😊
