Teen Defends Walking Out High School Graduation After Facing Backlash

It was pomp and no consequence for a Pennsylvania high school student who took her her diploma and just kept on walking. Each of the graduates of Parkland High School in Allentown came on stage when their names were called and returned to their assigned seats... except for Tayler Michelle Gray. In a video that has gone viral this week, Gray proudly accepts her diploma and walks off the stage just like all the other students, poses for the official photo and then walked past her seat and out the door. #InsideEdition
She received her diploma, she's graduated from her school. Her walking out shouldn't have disturbed anyone.
Spit Fire I know rite!
Spit Fire PREATH
At my high school graduation, we only got our diploma holders. We had to come back on the last day to pick our diplomas up. I imagine how awkward it must be for someone to walk off stage, only to have to look their principle or AP in the face to ask for their diploma on the last day.
ghostkilla96 me 2 lol...
Same for us, except we went after the ceremony and picked it up in a different location in the school. lol
She got her diploma then said "ight, I’m bout to head out"

@@mikelbaesc8665 lucky! I'm class of 2020 myself and I ain't graduating on stage due to the virus! 😔 Who knew March 13 would be our last day of school! I didn't even get to say bye to my friends! This year sucks!
I'm an old lady and think that after spending so many years in a controlled school system she had every right to walk out, it was her graduation, not everyone else's.
So then everyone should walk out, why even have a graduation at all?
@@jragon9215 i mean if people dont wanna wait for it to be over they should leave if they want, its not like leaving hurts anyone besides themselves
@@jragon9215 I would've preferred they just give me the diploma on the last day of school and be done with it.
Technically, it was everyone else's graduation, too.
But I get what you're saying. :)
Everybody has the right to be rude. That's not the point.
My graduation was supposed to be 1 hour. We waited 3 and a half hours, listening to speeches. I can't even recall or care what was said. You go girl!
Mine consisted of over an hour of "practice" after the scheduled practice, and then was estimated to take over two hours, which it overshot a ton; I waited so long for my diploma, and still had to wait, and HOLD IT, for over an hour... they basically refused to give us our actual diplomas until after the ceremony, and admitted they would withhold it if we did something like this girl or even one of those celebrations such as throwing our hats up...
I didn’t even go to my high school graduation. Why bother sitting down listening to people I don’t care about and will never see again. I picked up my diploma at the school the next day. 😌
@@rpd3327 It's not always an option... a friend basically dropped out at the end of high school and had forfeited their diploma and had to get a GED... depends on the district and state tbh...
They said I had to arrive at 9:00am. It started at 1:00pm. So I waited 4 hours in a robe in 80 degree weather.
She knew trying to get out of the parking lot afterwards would be a nightmare.

Elysian Cuban they actually don't have to wait. she could of had it mailed
Serenitie3 They don't do that where I'm from, you have to wait tbh
Would have done the same if they didn’t hold our diplomas captive until the middle of the summer! By the time I graduated HS, I was fed up with educators, the education system and the brat-ass kids I went to school with. Nothing was a bigger waste of my time than being forced to go to school so I could be taught everything about nothing for 12-13 years.
Not everything about nothing 😂

Yeah an adult who looks like she probably wont be walking another graduation ceremony anytime soon. She should have treasured it a little more. As a parent I would be disappointed at her adult decision, it can only go a certain way if this is the best she could do.
Her mom was like "look, once you get your diploma we will meet you in the car. We missed breakfast for this and I'm hungry, we gotta beat these lunch crowds."
I respect that
Mimi Lamm definitely
😂
You gotta do what you gotta do. And sometimes that’s leaving early for Applebee’s.
Mimi Lamm lmao
When my daughter attended a graduation rehearsal for her high school, one of the students who had the highest GPA and was very overweight was heckled and called names by the students. Not one teacher or staff member tried to stop them. My daughter refused to attend her graduation in protest as she did not consider herself part of what transpired. Even the principal called her to plead with her to attend. A few days later her English teacher called her to applaud her stance. This happened at a high school in Arlington Texas many years ago.
Would've done the same cause I was *that* student, I mean I had an average GPA but I was heckled *all* through school, all I have is horrible memories of 8th grade, I tore up my class pic of then and I didn't even go to my HS
She did the right thing. Did the student who got heckled find out?
It was great she took a stand, but it would have been better if she went to the graduation and supported the girl that was being bullied. That would have shown the adults what they should have been doing. I am sure the girl would have had a better graduation and something to remember.
She spent 17 years of people telling her what to do, 4 of those years were spent going to a place she was forced to go to, always being told to succeed, try harder, do this, dont do that, be better, get those grades and get that diploma.
She got he diploma. She did what she came to do. Many kids grow up and learn many of their HS friends arent beneficial to them and arent true friends, so that's probably why she didnt care to stick around.
Plus though graduation ceremonies take forever and shes damn smart to make a beeline for applebees lmao shes definitely going places lol

I know right? God some people.
@@brianh8320 right? entitled people
@@bzuku9554 If by entitled you mean those who think she should stay at graduation, then yes. Otherwise, no.
It can be perceived as disrespectful if one considers that often each student is expected to wait their turn and to be present for those receiving their diplomas after them just as those in front of her waited for her. You lose an element of the ceremony and the impression of a "unified" class if people just peel away one by one. Not a great look for the people at the end of the queue to receive their diplomas.
One graduates both as an individual and as part of a class.
In my view, the action was selfish, but if it didn't bother her classmates and faculty/admins, we can all just move on. First world problems.
Yeah and it was her graduation. Not everyone else’s who thought it was “dIsReSpEcTfUl”
I had the best graduation when I graduated in 2020! It was just get your diploma and go, no backlash. In fact you were lucky to even have a graduation held.
She wasn't being rude at all, she got her diploma, she's graduated. Get off her back
I think it was very rude and disrespectful... everyone in the room stays whilst all of their class mates graduate. Everyone is there supporting each other and celebrating as a collective. This one person leaving just sticks out like a sore thumb in a very "i cant be arsed staying to see everyone on the happiest walk of their life" way. She should have not been selfish and shown respect!
Maybe the other people didn't earn her respect? I honestly say good for her, I wouldn't care if someone walked out on my graduation ceremony and would probably do the same thing if I could. Why do I have to stay there and clap as each person after me gets their diploma, etc. it's not like they'd even notice I was gone. She got to get out and go to a restaurant she wanted to go to before everyone else started leaving, and honestly, if my family came down for my graduation, I'd probably leave early too so I could spend more time with them. I honestly don't see what the big deal is. I am also a person that believes that you should respect your teachers, classmates, parents, etc. but I don't see her walking out as a sign of disrespect.
Madcatter "Earn her respect" tf...
Ryder Washington Like maybe they weren't kind to her, etc. Everyone's saying it's "disrespectful" to walk out. You give respect, you get respect that's the way it is. I didn't necessarily mean respect, I guess, just maybe all the kids in her class were mean to her or something. There could be many reasons, obviously one of hers was to get to Applebees before the rush.
Ryder Washington Yeah, so I guess I'd be one of those kids then, huh? Because if I could do that, I would. And trust me, I don't disrespect people in high school, I'm the shy misfit that everyone probably thinks is weird and nobody talks to. I definitely don't disrespect teachers and I for sure don't disrespect other students, though my guess is they probably make fun of me all the time. I absolutely hate school, and to be able to get out of the ceremony as soon as possible would be awesome for me, though I doubt my parents would ever allow it as their the ones that want me to go to the graduation ceremony in the first place, and I don't really want to. I am a senior in high school by the way.

The diploma is more important that a freaking ceremony. She got what she wanted and walked right out. GOOD FOR HER👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
agreed
Does living by the rules like civilized humans mean something to you?
Jay Lopez I wish I thought of it.
Yoda Ydyxz does that mean anything to anyone anymore
Your logic is flawed because if she just wanted the diploma, she could have had it mailed. I've never heard of a school that doesn't mail diplomas.
well she's smart for going to applebee's early
ha ha good one
tragicramen true,true
She rejected the crowd
She went to Olive Garden lol
Toni It has been one whole year.
Pennsylvania literally has nothing else to talk about if this is the type of news that they put on TV lol😂😂
Lmaoooo@ “I just minded my business.” I like her😂😂😂😂
*I don't see anything wrong with what she did. She got her certificate and left. Like she said, she didn't disrupt anyone. She simply walked away quietly.*
Just curious then, how do you think a graduation ceremony should be structured? Should the traditions all be abandoned in favour of something else?
@@ntr10me If someone wants to leave and not have to wait, they should be able to. It doesn't hurt anyone but them if they don't leave
I agree
@@ntr10me the fact you think tradition will be in danger if you just let people leave tells me no one actually wants to be there…and your a old person that’s already had their chance to graduate. Graduation tradition shouldn’t matter to you and besides it doesn’t effect you so
Ikr! people need to chill it's not like she walked out and came back with a giant speaker and started blasting WAP on max volume 🙄
She's an adult and can do what she wants. Worst thing were the adults screaming and blowing the air horn which took away from the next students name being announced.
Yes! Thank you for saying this!
No she's not an adult untill she starts paying her own way. Graduating high school doesn't make you an adult
yankeefan092 Adult means 18 or older
tell that to the government. Once you're 18, you're an adult.
she is. last time i checked you're accounted as an adult when you're 19.
Seems like a very smart young lady to me. If it’s beyond your control people……then don’t let it bother you. Toxic people is what make the internet truly blow up like it does. I’m proud of her. She was even efficient in her Applebees endeavor 💯
Home. She's going home.
*_*Movie credits._**
She graduated and got her diploma so what more do they want? Lol quit acting dramatic, there's nothing wrong with what she did in my eyes.
Sara K Exactly once you walk across the stage ur FREE!!😅
all she cares about is herself, like why bother going to the ceremony if ur just gonna walk out like that lol
just have your diploma mailed to u
kittenbath because its her choice to go to the ceremony and accept her diploma and its her her choice if she wants to stay. she didnt go to school for years to watch other people get their diplomas she went for herself and then went out to eat and beat the traffic. pretty smart if you ask me.
kittenbath You’re just wanting something to complain about
kittenbath its not that simple hun
