14-Year-Old With Down Syndrome Left Out of Yearbook Picture

- Controversy is swirling around a junior high cheerleading squad in Utah after a 14-year-old girl with down syndrome was not pictured in the group photo that was in the yearbook. Morgyn Arnold is the beloved manager of the squad. Like the other cheerleaders, she posed in the team photo for the school's yearbook. But when her family eagerly opened it, Morgyn was nowhere to be found. Shoreline Junior High’s school district in Utah is now apologizing. #InsideEdition

Seriously!
This was not just a simple, innocent "mistake" -- it was clearly a DELIBERATE CHOICE by whoever put together the yearbook to include a photo of the cheerleading squad WITHOUT Morgan in it. I can't even begin to imagine how crushed & humiliated she must have felt when she opened that yearbook & realized she wasn't pictured with the rest of the team. It's disgusting, criminally insensitive & downright outrageous.
In my opinion, she deserves a proper apology from her school -- not a simple shrug & an "oops we made a mistake lol." That is not an apology. And this was clearly not just "a mistake." If this was a mistake, why were none of the other girls left out of the yearbook picture? Why was it JUST the one girl who happens to be handicapped? At least own up to the fact that what you did was wrong, apologize DIRECTLY to Morgan & her family & make sure it never, ever happens again. The school owes her that, at least.

If you look carefully this isn't a photoshop, it's a whole new picture. 1st row, 3rd girl from the left is not smiling when the manager is in photo, in the 2nd photo she is smiling. That rules out a mistake, they intentionally all got together to make a new photo
That's so wild
Usually, when you have group pictures you may take multiple shots, and with various people in different positions. A main one with everyone for things like yearbooks or other formal uses, and more individual/smaller groups ones for independent use. In girl scouts, we would take multiple pictures of the entire troop, then individual friend groups too. And it's entirely possible that they took a picture without her at first, maybe she was getting a drink of water at the time and syill on her way, and they waited to take the next group pic when she got there. It could also be they took the picture with her first, then she got tired of picture taking but the others still wanted to take a few more even if those pictures weren't intended to be used. They likely took more than just these two photos, and whoever was putting them in the yearbook either was sent all of them and chose this one, or was sent the wrong set of pictures entirely. There's a lot of potential explanations for why this could have happened without malicious actions. At the very least, due to other shifts in the picture, this does not appear to be photoshopped, and was simply a picture taken around the same time, probably within a couple minutes of each other.
I don't think they intentionally got together to make a new photo. I'm pretty sure it was just one of the ones they took on the same day, and ultimately decided to pick the one that didn't include her. The other messed up part is not even mentioning her name.
Also maybe it is or isn't entirely on the school, but more often times it's the "Yearbook" club or whatever they're called, that curate the yearbook photos, which is usually a bunch of the students. Maybe it wasn't the cheerleading club or adults, but rather some messed up teenager deciding the photo is better without her.
It wasn't just the photo that is at issue the fact that the school did not mention her at all is all telling!
"It's a mistake..." like that isn't any mistake. I mean, if it was, why was SHE missing. Like couldn't another girl get cropped out of something? This is ridiculous.

That's an absolutely horrible thing to do. It was not done by mistake, but very blatantly only purpose.
how much of a mistake is it to run a picture through an editing program?
The spokeswoman’s response made it worse. Trying to deny that it even happened by calling it a “mistake”.
Lol

This wasn’t a mistake. A teacher knew & signed off on it. They just didn’t think about the consequences. Shame on the yearbook staff and the adult who monitors it!
Plus that Photoshop is way too good just to been “a mistake”
Or they took a completely different picture without her…

That's so heartless.

that's just nasty how horrible people can be they didn't care about her because she had a health problem
I feel very sorry for her but I think it might have been a mistake..someone who has no idea what a manager is was probably confused. she wasn't wearing the same outfit and they thought she didn't belong to the team and that one pic with her was just a snapshot..not a pic for the yearbook

As somebody who had the displeasure of being in the Utah school system, this behavior does not surprise me at all.
I have a treasure trove of stories regarding terrible school staff during my time living there...
sad
@@rio7916 Right and so people have more reasons to believe it was never a mistake to begin with.
You should be. You don't get brownie points for basic human decency.
Here's what happened. Some student(s) were put in charge of the yearbook. Student(s) didn't like her, so they removed her from the photo. Children in high school can be very, VERY horrible towards other children.
I thought they had photoshopped her out of the picture, but comparing the two they were different pictures. So they MUST have taken multiple photos, at least one without including the girl in the middle. Where was the mistake there? They apparently already took pictures without her which makes me really sad.
Yup all other girls knew what they were doing
She's front and center on the original picture probably because her teammates loved her and wanted to include her. It's sad for her, her family, but also for her friends.
Exactly! I wouldn't be surprised if there were people who were devastated that she was left out.

@@liliswan207 that was intentionally done, 2 different pictures, they took one with her so that her family wouldn't be alarmed of her saying that she took no photo with her cheerleader squad during photo day, though the squad potentially had no hand in this but was pressured to take a photo without her because of those people.

It does say in the story, though she's the manager of the team and not a cheer leader?
"There was no ill intent" - That was a blatant lie.
Shameless that they don't own their decision to exclude her.
If you look closely, she was not edited out. They took separate photos: one where she's in while the other she's out (look at the photos, the other girls posed different). Which means the school did this intentionally. How cruel.
oh wow!
That's exactcly what I said
You're right! Didn't notice that. It would have been intentional either way though. Just like taking a second picture without her couldn't have been unintentional, expertly cropping her out wouldn't have been unintentional either.

How do the schools that make awful decisions like this not realize it’s probably gonna go viral and destroy their reputations?
Because it happens often. There's lots of injustices that happens daily that most would never hear of. I doubt this is the first time this school has done something like this
@TriageUnit they obviously don't like her, her name was also removed
Other than recalling every one of the yearbooks containing the doctored photo (which would be expensive), the best approach would be to find the person or persons who made this decision and have them publicly explain themselves after apologizing to this young woman, her family, the other cheerleaders and to the other students.
