How can a film win best editing and not even be nominated for best director? Doesn't the director play a major part in the editing process especially after the first cut?
I thought Boyhood deserved this award, since editing footage from 12 years and making it all blend together into one story is pretty seamless, but at the same time, Whiplash is also a deserving winner because the editing in it was perfect.
I slightly disagree with the notion that an editor saves an actors performance. I've never believed that you can deliver a Golden Raspberry Award performance on the set, but an editor can find the 45 mins necessary for example to make it an Oscar winning one. Also is calling this category Film Editing correct anymore given that the last edited on film winner was Saving Private Ryan and four out of five winners of this award were given to digital capture movies
Not necessarily. Certain actors need more direction than others. If we take Juliette Binoche and Naveen Andrews from The English Patient for example. Juliette didn't need as much direction from Anthony Minghella as Naveen did. Also many actors much prefer collaborating with their director rather than being treated as a puppet
I guess everyone behind the comments understands editing. I just enjoyed the movie, but the movie failed to do justice for the boyfriend / girlfriend relationship. I had no sympathy for her and expected her to bounce up and be alright with the breakup. Other than the hand sores, the movie didn't do justice for the amount of practice the student had to put in to excel. Whether these areas are fault of the editing or the script I don't know.
Whiplash deserved at least a nomination for Best Director.
Agreed. It is such an incredibly directed film. I'm still in awe that the car crash scene was done in one shot. That is intense talent.
kellenabner Well, actually it wasn't done in one shot, but it's hard to spot the cuts in that sequence for sure...
+Wlliam Kilmer Why is that????????
And Best Writer, this was the perfect movie.
+Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) It was nominated for best adapted writing?
So well deserved, Whiplash wouldn't be the same without the amazing editing.
Whiplash is changed my l.i.f.e.
No dah Lucas Mota
OMG Damien Chazelle's happiness at 1:13 made me smile so much!! And I'm glad this year we are going to see him win!

Tom Cross is gonna be the next Thelma Schoonmaker. Rhythmic editing in all his work!

Actors are mere puppets. The directing and the script are what make a performance good or bad.

reptongeek the relationship actor-director can lead to great acting or bad. Maybe it depends on the work of both.
Edge of tomorrow should have been nominated

Don't know why it was nominated fr Bst picture...Except fr the music there's nothing really impressive......
Then you probably don't get the movie, if there wasn't "anything good but the music", watch it again when you're older.
Yup, yup, yup! I love how he thanks everyone. The hero we need but don't deserve.
