To understand what they’re based on, you have to first appreciate that this is Galar, so they’re probably more based on UK or at least European birds. That’s why I think Rookidee is based on the blue tit , great tit and (possibly) non-European chickadee, which is a member of the Parus (tit) family. Its shiny form probably draws inspiration from the marsh/willow tit. Corvisquire is probably based on a small corvid- most probably the jackdaw, though its relatively bright colouring suggest elements of the (Eurasian) jay. Same with its shiny, but more jackdaw. And finally, Corviknight is 100% raven. For those that say that its size is too large for a corvid inspiration, the Eurasian Rave is the worlds largest passerine ( perching bird) and is bigger than several birds of prey. Corviknight is pure raven down to the neck ruffle and harsh cry.
The blade bird thing of Gigantamax Corviknight reminds me of the Stymphalian birds of Greek myth. Metallic birds with sharp feathers that they shoot at prey.
It's always funny to me to imagine how you record voicepieces like the last part. Just a weirdly screaming Lockstin in his recording room, with Sasha judging from a distance.
I'm going to touch on something a bit different than this video talked about: Corviknight's moveset and design lines up with a typical fantasy class (in fact, one of the most iconic,) the warrior. The warrior, as I interpret it, is a versatile fighter. It's a martial class with flexibility between offense and defense, and it shows in some of Corviknight's builds. For example, Bulk Up/Body Press gives me the impression of a greatsword-like bruiser (flex and bonk), and defensive screens/roost stall builds imply more of a shield kit (defensive shield stance). I like to believe there's a lot of flexibility on how to approach Corviknight. So, I think it's awesome that Corviknight keeps true to an archetype so well like this. I'm not speaking from concrete references, but I love this Pokémon. I hope I got across my idea.
One of the British royals used to wear black armor too. That was Edward the Black Prince, son of Edward II. There are also some jousting armors that are unusually dark. Also, as a fun fact from someone currently learning a longsword style, these swords and the fighting style are designed more for blunt force damage than slicing due to how plate armor is
I don't know where else to put this but I've noticed a lot of things connecting nihilego to the lore of scarlet and violet that I genuinely think you should look into. some of the connections ive noticed were 1. the tera orb symbol being the same symbol on nihilego as well as the fact terastillizations gives a pokemon a "crown" which nihilego could be seen as a crown 2. Geetas hair style looks remarkably similar to lusamine fused with nihilego as wells as the pokemon league symbol looks like the weird eye symbols on lusinamine/nihilego 3. the fact that sada/turo gets obsessed with a "paradise" is exactly how lusinamine gets obsessed with the aether paradise 4. since glimmora is already probably connected to area zero and nihilego and glimmora are both the only rock poison types sort of points to the fact something is up with that type combination in specific 5. in the scarlet/violet book the author has memories their memories messed with and the portion about the "disk" pokemon the author is unclear whether what he saw was a pokemon or whether or not it was even alive sort of resembles how the ultra beasts and specifically nihilego is described. (maybe what he saw was some sort of nihilego egg) sorry if this isn't the right place to put this stuff but i realized this stuff at like 3 am while watching youtube videos and this was the only place i could think of to put down these thoughts
It wasn't really mentioned, but the tower of London is mostly famous for torture. The play Richard 3rd by William Shakespeare has richard send his nephews (I think, been a while since I read it) taken to the tower and later poisoned so he could secure the crown. Mary Queen of Scots was also famously held there for many years until her execution. I've got a hunch as well that corviknight is based on the stereotypical depiction of an executor as well, with the all black and angry expression with what looks like it's wearing a hood as well, even with its "blade birds", axes stopped being used for head chopping and were replaced with swords from Spain (oh hey, paldea).
Until this video, I didnt even realize it was a separate, specific location from where royalty lived (thinking Greenwich/Whitehall, I guess). I thought that the castle/palace towers were just where they kept prisoners. 🌠
@TheDarwinProject1 they kept prisoners in dungeons underneath castles (there's one near Manchester I think that's still used as a prison today), but royalty would mostly live in palaces, like Buckingham and Hampton Court. Castles were mostly strongholds or army barracks
I always assumed the reason Corviknight is the Taxi service is because Black is like this symbol of VIP. Think to black limos, black taxis, black escort cars, a lot of which is popular in British movies. Heck, Black Taxis are another icon of British transport culture aside from the Red Doubledecker. To be transported by Corviknight is to be travelling in style and comfort fit for the Queen.
12:14 - 12:25 It's the same logic I see with Rotom being the partner for all our tech stuff. "Yeah sure, let's rely on a mischievous specter to power the tech we rely on to study and traverse the world with." Also to help explain: - The symbol of Ravenclaw is actually a Bronze Eagle, not a Raven like how the movies (and by extension a lot of the official merch) depicts it. The idea is more that the eagle has "raven claws" because "raven" was also used to just be another way of saying the color "black" and eagles have black talons. The Super Carlin Brothers have a more in depth vid if you're curious. - Ravenclaw is the "book smart kids" club, so it's actually pretty fitting for you. - Griffondoor is pretty much the competitive jocks. - Slytherin are the folks that try to out think someone or get themselves into a better position to get ahead, sort of the more "street smart kids", although they tend to get the short end of the stick being that most of the time, and the more notable members, are pretty much the bad guys in the series. - Hufflepuff is the communal group that wants everyone to get along.
This makes me wonder how Corviknight without the armor would look, because under the armor the only things shown are it’s beard (unless it’s part of the armor), the eyes, and parts of its legs
I wonder if the "blade birds" are a reference to the stymphalian birds, vicious bronze beaked birds which could shoot their razor sharp metalic feathers at foes from Greek mythology, Heracles had to defeat them as one of his 12 labors. Referencing both the hoards of birds as well as their arrow like feathers.
About corviknight and it's evolution lines names: Rookiedee is a Rookie, which in the middle ages meant he was training to be a squire. Corvisquire is a squire, which is a knight in training. A squire would also assist his knight by doing things for him, like getting weapons ready. Corviknight is now a full fledged knight, armored up and ready for combat!
Carolina vs Black Capped Chickadee: they have distinctive songs/calls and very little overlap in range. Where they do overlap, they do not cross breed. Hence, they are two different species. :]
Another thing that might tie into the whole "the ravens of the Tower of London protects the king/queen" thing is that, well, Corviknight, well, as a loyal knight it protects the crown. Knights must fight in service of their lieges and all. And a ruler with no protectors is easily dispatched by their enemies so having no "knights" in the form of these ravens would indeed be bad news.
In the game Age of Mythology the unit called Roc, is a flying creature that you can summon so you can carry your land units. It's probably a big strech, but it could be the why Corviknight is a taxi.
So as a huge medieval history fan, and Armor nerd I have a couple additions and addendums. You should look into the myth of the valravne or Raven of the Slain . To quote wiki: The valravne that ate the king's heart gained human knowledge and could perform great malicious acts, could lead people astray, had superhuman powers, and were "terrible animals" to get off the wiki bit it was also said that those who ate the heart of the king could also manifest as a Knight in full plate armor. Which feels very fitting. Also! The Germans are the ones who popularized fluted armor with German Gothic. Later on said fluting mixed with the White Italian style to create the Maximillian Fluted armor that you showed pictures of :D
It’s also interesting because the Ravens who are protecting the tower could also be considered “knights” because they are protecting the metaphorical crown. Therefore, just like the Ravens are protecting GB, Corviknight is protecting Galar. As for corvids/ravens being angry - that’s only when you make them angry, when you double-cross them & tarnish their honor - just like a knight who will fight you to maintain their honor &/or a knight who will not stand to have a miscreant go unpunished for their evil deeds (be it against the knight themself or against their lord/kingdom)
I wouldn't take too much pride in being a Slytherin Austin.....The ONLY good people in that house are Horace Slughorn and Severus Snape. And as much as I love Severus as a character that's not really saying much for that house.
also in medieval england to the ones who became nobles buying the title or earning it throw skills in battle was gives a family crest with the crows. that might be another inspiration!
Corviknight also seems to have taken at least some inspiration from the valraven. First it’s a supernatural raven that can turn into a knight, second it’s from Danish myth which ties into the Viking inspired Pokémon.
An additional point, Gigantamax Corviknight and its Blade Birds may reference old concepts of airborne aircraft carriers (Originally a pair of Akron-class airships in the 1930s that both ended up crashing after a total of 18 months of service, and then a variety of other projects and concepts that never reached operational capacity), or reference a modern reimagining of that concept by having a larger mothership aircraft be capable of launching small unmanned drone fighter aircraft. In both cases, the smaller launched aircraft are known as "parasite aircraft."
I assumed that they were the taxi service because London is famous for its Black Cabs - it just helped that they needed a fly replacement and the regional bird was black.
The Taxi-connection maybe in refrence to the London "Black-Cabs". The city's traditional taxi service with iconic black taxis (black bird of London -> Black taxi of London)
I wonder if there's also a reference to Odin and his ravens, Huginn and Muninn, in this design. The large beard and suggestion of a moustache invoke Odin's appearance, and he was a god known for wandering and travelling, often accompanying others while in disguise. He was also a psychopomp and could transport people to the land of the dead and back. That, too, could lend itself to a dark taxi service.
-easy to tame/train and wont drop its job mid-journey -scares away predators and against those it doesnt scare its literally armored -big enough to actually carry a cab plus passengers, which is kinda rare for the common flying types too bad that in paldea, a certain pink gremlin with a giant hammer LOVES pelting corviknights with rocks to they point anotehr specie had to be used (as even if the corviknight was fine it would be a risk for the pâssengers anyway should the tinkaton miss a little)
pretty sure the main reason for corviknight being the taxi service pokemon is just because its black to represent black cabs plus its one of the very few new mons that can actually fly
There is another possible reason for the corviknight/ taxi link: the black shiny armour makes it look like a black London taxi (Hackney Cab) which are actually found in most British cities
Can't believe this is your last video..... For 2022, of course! Can't wait to see what 2023 has in store in terms of videos. Happy New year, Lockstin and the crew!
Black-cap and Carolina Chickadees have different mating calls, so they separate themselves that way, even when they occupy territory together. Fun thing, though: since birds learn their calls by listening to their parents, chickadees of either species raised in captivity can learn the song of the opposite species, though they don't seem to be able to cross breed efficiently.
The houses are basically chosen based on your traits, some are more vague then others though. Gryphindor: bravery Hufflepuff: Being nice? Ravenclaw: Smarts and a desire to learn Slitherine: Cunning.

2:45 *sees that the white parts on corvisquire's face aren't their eyes* þanks, i hate it
I have a Shiny Corviknight on my Scarlet playthrough team. I got the shiny before I got to Mezagoza.

15:14 “This is Blade 1, requesting permission to commence attack run, over”
You dedicate your life to sharing knowledge with Pokémon fans trying to explain the unexplained, that’s peak Ravenclaw my guy
I love all the clangy noises when the editor kept putting up pictures of armor! Gives my brain the good stimulus! ^w^
Corviknight is my most FAVORITE Pokémon of all time! I’m happy I watched this! Thanks Lockstein and Gnoggin!❤❤❤
Its ME!!!!
THE CORVID!
As a bird nerd, You got all the points right!
Did you suffer from CORVID-19?
Were you cRAVEN a vaccine?
Bird nird🤓
I'm going to touch on something a bit different than this video talked about:
Corviknight's moveset and design lines up with a typical fantasy class (in fact, one of the most iconic,) the warrior.
Also, as a fun fact from someone currently learning a longsword style, these swords and the fighting style are designed more for blunt force damage than slicing due to how plate armor is
Makes sense he’s ravenclaw he’s always using his noggin
I don't know where else to put this but I've noticed a lot of things connecting nihilego to the lore of scarlet and violet that I genuinely think you should look into.
some of the connections ive noticed were
1. the tera orb symbol being the same symbol on nihilego as well as the fact terastillizations gives a pokemon a "crown" which nihilego could be seen as a crown
2. Geetas hair style looks remarkably similar to lusamine fused with nihilego as wells as the pokemon league symbol looks like the weird eye symbols on lusinamine/nihilego
3. the fact that sada/turo gets obsessed with a "paradise" is exactly how lusinamine gets obsessed with the aether paradise
4. since glimmora is already probably connected to area zero and nihilego and glimmora are both the only rock poison types sort of points to the fact something is up with that type combination in specific
5. in the scarlet/violet book the author has memories their memories messed with and the portion about the "disk" pokemon the author is unclear whether what he saw was a pokemon or whether or not it was even alive sort of resembles how the ultra beasts and specifically nihilego is described. (maybe what he saw was some sort of nihilego egg)
sorry if this isn't the right place to put this stuff but i realized this stuff at like 3 am while watching youtube videos and this was the only place i could think of to put down these thoughts
Corviknight: I love being steel type I sure do hope there's no predator for me next gen.
12:14 - 12:25
It's the same logic I see with Rotom being the partner for all our tech stuff. "Yeah sure, let's rely on a mischievous specter to power the tech we rely on to study and traverse the world with."
Also to help explain:
- The symbol of Ravenclaw is actually a Bronze Eagle, not a Raven like how the movies (and by extension a lot of the official merch) depicts it.
On top of all that, the Ravenclaw mascot isn’t even a raven. It’s an eagle
4:33 I didn't think I would hear that... I was thinking it, but then I had to take a double take. Well, played.
Such a perfect Pokémon. And the reason I’d crush Tinkaton’s skull with her own hammer. If I was strong enough anyways.
Makes sense
About corviknight and it's evolution lines names:
Rookiedee is a Rookie, which in the middle ages meant he was training to be a squire.
Well, now that you mention the Roc, in Age of mythology the Roc serves as a transport unit.
In the game Age of Mythology the unit called Roc, is a flying creature that you can summon so you can carry your land units.
It's probably a big strech, but it could be the why Corviknight is a taxi.
I DIDN'T REALIZE CORVIKNIGHT HAS A BEARD
Unfortunately, Ravenclaw's mascot animal isn't actually a raven; it's an eagle. No, I don't know why.
What the actual hell is this title...
And as much as I love Severus as a character that's not really saying much for that house.
also in medieval england to the ones who became nobles buying the title or earning it throw skills in battle was gives a family crest with the crows. that might be another inspiration!
the whole line is clearly based of the corvid bird species. Corvi- is basically just corvid and a rook is a species of corvid found a lot in england
9:20 I believe the term for armoured boots is "Sabatons"
5d chess with multiverse time travel this is the actual game
How did you miss the stymphilian bird reference? They shoot out their feathers to attack just like gigantimax corviknight
4:34, 4:42 These are absolutely hilarious 😂😂😂
-easy to tame/train and wont drop its job mid-journey
-scares away predators and against those it doesnt scare its literally armored
-big enough to actually carry a cab plus passengers, which is kinda rare for the common flying types
too bad that in paldea, a certain pink gremlin with a giant hammer LOVES pelting corviknights with rocks to they point anotehr specie had to be used (as even if the corviknight was fine it would be a risk for the pâssengers anyway should the tinkaton miss a little)
Gigantamax Corviknight sounds like arsenal bird from ace combat with the independent feathers.
pretty sure the main reason for corviknight being the taxi service pokemon is just because its black to represent black cabs plus its one of the very few new mons that can actually fly
6:23 That got a big chuckle out of me.
I like the detail of toon Lockstin sitting on books on the chair in the intro, so glad toon Lockstin is canonically just a little guy
Squawkabilly provide the taxi service in Paldea instead of Corviknight because of the threatening Tinkaton that live there.
And then corviknight left galar to paldea only to get pelted with rocks by a pink gremlin with a massive hammer
Btw you should do a video on Tinkaton now that you handled the Taxi it hates
Neat vid!
Though it’s kinda weird but I expected Tinkaton to be mentioned a bit in this vid, but I guess that’s what the Tinkaton vid was for
At least there’s no tinkaton in this video…
Lockstein: Corviknight is a like a Roc!
Bombirdier: am I a joke to you?
There's a card game called rook that has a corvid as it's mascot
The houses are basically chosen based on your traits, some are more vague then others though.
Gryphindor: bravery
Hufflepuff: Being nice?
Ravenclaw: Smarts and a desire to learn
Slitherine: Cunning.
Man, those personality quizzes were never right.
What makes the opening joke really funny, is that Ravenclaws emblem is an eagle.
"great tits"
"tits are pretty passive by nature"
I legit could not stop laughing, I'm so sorry
i mean... if we take the chess inspiration we can also justify why it's shiny is white, referencing the black\white duality
wow that fake eye thing is trippy. now instead of Rookidee and Corvisquire frowning at you, you realize they're head empty, no thoughts.
