My brother wasn't a streamer but he killed himself last year a few days before Christmas. Depression is a mental illness. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain. What you've said here glinks is really spot on. The feeling of not progressing or stagnating in your life is horrible. People need to feel like they have a purpose and my guess is that if your doing the same thing day in day out for years...eventually your going to break and your going to need a change.
Depression isn't beautiful. Depression is bad hygiene, dirty dishes, and a sore body from sleeping too much. Depression is having 3 friends that are only still around because they have the patience and love of a saint. Depression is crying until there's no more tears, just dry heaving and sobbing until you're gasping for your next breath. Depression is staring at the ceiling until your eyes burn because you forget to blink. Depression is making your family cry because they think you don't love them anymore when you're distant and distracted. Depression is somatic as well as emotional, an emptiness you can physically feel.
Everyone's depression is different I guess... but how can you be depressed and still pull yourself together and stream to please thousands of viewers? Idk, depression is supposed be to about loneliness but these people seem a little backwards. I think it's partly an attention complex
Depression isnt out of anyone's hands. You can always get help from someone you trust, or you can learn to trust one of the many people volunteering to help people at hotlines. I don't like the idea of calling them myself, but I could really use someone to just talk to and ill probably use them when my depression flares up again. If you have really high anxiety as well I would consider seeing a psychiatrist too to make sure you don't need any anti-anxiety meds
Trey, there are plenty of people who function with depression. It reminds me of the amazing will to live that us humans have built into us. I've noticed that people I know with "functioning depression" have some of the worst depression for numerous reasons As far as hotlines, be very careful. I have a family member who called one in desperation a few years ago, the cops came to do a wellness check on her then started asking her if she was from Syria and asked to see her i.d. Can you imagine?
I feel like alot of people go through similar feelings expressed in this video, share some of your experiences in the comments, I'd love to see people's backstories and perspectives.
The world we live today, is very different to 30 years ago, when I was a teenager. And we allow that world. Still a lot of good, good stuff in it, but reflections like this teach about our health, and friendship, and about community. One thing in particular I super dilsike, is advertising. On a young mind, like for little kids? it's a very powerful way to mold a mind, and fill heads with ideas and wishes and desires that they don't even really want, and certainly don't need, and come to know someday as being unreal, useless, and harmful, but they think it's about them, but it's not. It's just exposure, over and over to interests of others that don't really have much of an interest in anything but money, or control. And this conditioning, which is what it is, is such a waste of time, and time is our most precious, precious possession. Good vid m8, thanks
Our children have a lot more to deal with than advertising. At least here in the U.S., they are taught what to think and not how to think, critical thinking is not high on the curriculum.
I'm doing something I love. Construction. You get to be outside and do physical activity. No artificial lights or sitting in front of a desk. And all top of that, I exercise regularly and eat as healthy as I can. Some may think, that my job is shit and I don't get paid enough or that my life is boring because I don't go out drinking and smoking. I also cut out the rotten people out of my life and left the ones that really fucking care. I have a quarter of the amount of friends I used to have, but at least they are all actually my friends now. To be honest, I've never been happier. I feel awesome all the time, even when everything slaps me in the face. I just can't help it but smile. I hope I got my message clear since I'm not a native speaker. And I think your video was awesome and eye opening! Thanks :)
Playing games for long hours caused me some major depression too. People should understand that everything has its downside and while they may love gaming, it will cause depression and it will eat hours and hours of your life.
Yeah sitting in an office can cause depression.. the problem though with the majority of gamers who aren't streamers are living a life with artificial fulfillment nothing that is real. Best thing is to find your center and what is important to you and what really matters. Everyone is miserable, life is hard. But when you know the world doesnt owe you anything atleast it can prevent you from falling down a dark path.
I utterly doubt anyone will hear me out on this one but the reason most streamers are depressed is the exact same reason why a lot of hardcore gamers including myself go through periods of depression. Having or doing nothing with your life other than playing games all day. For me school, martial arts, and work was a great distraction from gaming until I graduated from high school a couple weeks ago and now all I've done with my life is go to my boring dead end job and after work game until I start college. Now imagine being a streamer and trying to make a living by sitting around all day in front of a TV or monitor it's going to make you feel worthless. The issue with games is that as soon as we turn off the screen reality hits us in the face and we realize how little we've done with our lives. The issue with having lots of followers on Twitch or RUclips is that those people might not all be your friends they are just other people looking through a screen at you without being a physical audience. And the truth is that fame is nothing more than a virtual illusion that can go away at any time whether you like it or not. I'd love to make a living playing games too but I feel like the lack of real vs virtual human contact would get to me. Hell being a huge gamer there's days where I don't feel like being around people and would rather be in front of a screen. Or where I'd rather talk to people through a screen vs face to face. None of this was ever meant to happen to humans and its affected us as a race in a negative way just look at internet toxicity and the current climate of humanity.
But the internet in general has caused both the spread of amazing ideas and amazing things people have created as well mean comments and disturbing ideas. Also before the internet/online servers for games there were always mean people, the internet just helped them to be more vocal about being rude. Also theoretically the spread of information is a great thing as it is able to make more people aware of the truth about a lot of things even things some governments attempt to cover up at times. That said that kind of information might still be hidden to those countries but at least others who now know that information could rely it to where they visit. I will agree though that talking face to face with someone is the best then video calls (since it's close), then voice chat (since it's still their voice at all), then texts/facebook messages/etc. (since at that point it's text that can be misinterpreted though it may still have some form of how that person usually speaks or have a personality of how they write). Also at least the possibility of being able to talk to others more easily is a good thing as before the internet is was letters that take a while to even reach the person assuming the letter wasn't misplaced (which apparently some TV shows are based off of). For me personally I don't feel depressed because I play video games in fact I feel less depressed when doing so but an hour later it's back to how it was before. It's the same as how talking to friends seems to lessen it but then I or them have to head off and about an hour or say later the same thing happens. Also it makes me feel the need to sleep for a while because I feel less depressed while I sleep and especially so when I dream about what I want to dream though somehow that's not working as well as it used to. Regardless though I think depression is a huge and hard to understand issue and is probably different for everyone in certain ways. I also think Notch went through some of what Glink is talking about regarding not knowing who actually likes him as a person and who only likes him because of Minecraft. He also tried (and maybe still does) to hang out with people who were rich as well yet he felt little fulfillment in doing so because in my opinion a lot of rich people aren't usually the best people to hang out with what with stockpiling a lot of money and being greedy. There are exceptions obviously and I feel like Bill Gates would probably be a good person to be able to talk to considering he's been trying to actively help people who need help in other countries. Ultimately though I think it's overall best to look at people for who they are then what they personally might have. If you look at someone for what they have then you're trying to leech off of their success and end up being a terrible friend if not an enemy at that point. It would be nice if eventually everyone was able to find good friends and be able to talk to them without having to worry about their personal status as being successful at (whatever) and more about what they personally think instead.
While I do envy the lives of these streamers, this video really highlights that the lifestyle isn't all fun & games contrary to what we think sometimes. That being said fucking dream job still.
Life itself is not all fun and games. They're doing what they enjoy, if it brings out something most find uncomfortable, it's been building up much longer than they've been streaming.
Yea it does indeed sound like the dream, but i think its important to keep something on a schedule somehow so that you dont get stuck at home all day every day isolated from people. Everyone else meets people from a job, or in school, or at some scheduled activity. Being a streamer and being your own boss on a job that is completely solo doesnt give you those opportunities
Liam K Just because isolation doesn't make one person (you; you're only one person) lonely or depressed doesn't discount the scientific research that's been done on it. It 100% is a bad thing to be too isolated. I'm starting to think you maybe don't notice your mental illnesses because you have no one to point them out. So you think you're normal, maybe you're not. Depression aside; living in the middle of nowhere would kinda fuck up your idea of what normality is. And that does matter to most people, even if they pretend they're the most cynical person on the planet. Put them in the woods and they'd be begging to talk to someone after 3 months.
Hey man, Im actually a therapist, as well as a shoutcaster/streamer and youtuber. These are of course issues deep seated within the person. These are real people like you say. A lot of people put their whole lives/self into a stream, it worries me that they sometimes to a degree to forget about whats really going on in their life. Its not easy enough to say 'he hates his job and eats shit' and thats the reason someones depressed, it can definitely contribute BUT most depression is also rooted from early life. Nice video dude :).
Yes, but at the same time, as a therapist, surely you also assumed the possible correlation - not in the sense that streaming causes xyz, but that a person prone to xyz is more likely to later become a "gamer"/streamer or some of the similar, let's call them, occupations? If we assume that, for the sake of the analysis, we would have to search for a general thing among those people, which is, well, streaming/playing games:) Of course, everyone is an individual, but we can talk about things which are indicative. If I had to guess, I'd assume that the notion of "depressed streamers" is actually one of schizoid-like nature, because of immersion in the picture/phantasm, which is applicable to vast majority of them. Which basically means a case of some of the earliest coping mechanisms not being updated and starting to crack under pressure of a personality craving for further development. As they are all grownups, the almost inevitable late change of a coping mechanism is very painful, but at the same time very positive in the long run. In other words "A lot of people put their whole lives/self into a stream, it worries me that they sometimes to a degree to forget about whats really going on in their life" would be the unconscious goal, rather than some side consequence. It surely doesn't come from streaming, but as you said, from an answer to a trauma at an early age. Streaming just seems like a really good platform to move to when you feel the pressure of "updating".
Im not sure about the reply, but Schizoid behaviour is a by product of whats going on deeper in the internal world for sure. These are by products of a deeper condition for sure..
Jebro Huh,I've played GW since beta but I've never really watched your channel, only a couple of shoutcast pvp tourneys. I had no idea you were a therapist though. Interesting!
It's not that being lonely causes depression, it's the thought of being lonely that causes depression. You are constantly doing something. So you don't think about the root of the problem. when you don't do anything you begin to think And when you think you remember, that is when you begin to feel depression. That was my case anyway. I began to step away from those thoughts of being lonely because it's not what I want, so why think it. We have the power to remember the past and think about the future, and so we forget about the present.
Good video man, what you say is true. I also agree with what Reckful said. It really is hard to trust anyone... If someone knows they can use another person to gain shit themselves, they will. That's why I prefer to not bring up my youtube channel when meeting new people (Even though making videos is a big part of my life). Make them like you for who you are and not for what you have is the rule I go by. It's the only way to meet new real friends because it sorts out the leechers. I mean my channel is not HUGE compared to the bigger youtubers, but whenever people get to know I have a channel approaching 70k subs it's the only thing they want to talk about with me... Really puts me off...
Personally I think that the reason streamers and depression go together is the same reason that gamers typically might have depression too. Spending so much time in games and virtual worlds really lowers the need to socialize and go out hence real world becomes something unnecessary and a pain in the ass. Hence when not gaming, you aren't left with much to do since all you've been doing with your time is gaming and you feel depressed because of it and it's even worse for streamers since it's their job too, they are completely invested in the world of games. Just my opinion though
Tbh this Sus true but esp nowadays you have people who lost friends fallen out of touch so just normal people aswell sadly like what do you do when you are just at home all day nothing let’s say u were in of those people
Wanted to say that I enjoyed this side of vlogging and streaming. It has given me a lot to think about when I expand my facebook. I’m a truckdriver and post where I’m going and sometimes my opinion. The 2016 elections were hell!!! However, I enjoyed letting people know where I go and our expierences. It is very fun, and get a lot of good comments. People love to hear where I’m going. I think that people are suprised that I do drive and get out. Part of me did it because I’m really good at things I do my best at. Usually, I overshoot and I get bored. This is always an expierence and I have to work for it. Now I want to put myself out there, and seeing this video has given me a lot to think about. I need to continue on being healthy and happy, not just try to get the viewers....ect. Thanks so much for this video, it gives us a lot to think about. My hopes and prayers to those suffering.......
I'm obviously not a streamer myself, but for the past couple months I've spent a lot of my life just gaming... It's made me depressed, this video has inspired me. Thankyou.
This can be the case, a lot of the times streaming can be like therapy. But at the same time there are dead periods where depressed streamers won't feel motivated to stream or be consistent.
I just randomly stumbled across your channel man. It's 4 am and I can't stop watching. I've been depressed off and on ever since I graduated. It's very hard to deal with sometimes but anyone can get over it.
You have some interesting observations. To answer the question, "where do you meet people...In normal life?" I had the same quandary, and I solved it with volunteering at a No Kill dog shelter. I met like minded people and derived a new sense of self worth from feeling like I made a difference; it changed my life for the better, and honestly, saved me from myself. As cliche as it sounds, meeting people or creatures that have it worse than you doesn't only make you appreciate how much worse you could have it in life or just grateful for the good things, helping others makes you forget about your own sadness and anxieties. Like stories and history? Visit your local Council on Aging to chill with lonely old folks. Volunteer at a soup kitchen or food pantry. Like kids? After school programs and Big Bros Big Sisters always need helpers. If you like jokesters and can handle interacting with differently abled people, mentor a Special Olympics athlete, or visit with the day time residents of your local ARC. Hospice thrift stores always need help as well, and you can raise money for families in their most trying times *and* get first dibs on nice discounted furniture and clothes Or you could do what I did and have puppy time anytime, literally I have a key to the shelter and anytime I'm sad or bored, I can make a literal puppy cuddle puddle. It's amazing. With how fucked up this world is and how bleak the future seems, especially for us 'millennials' (for lack of a better term) there's a whole lot of sadness around. Income inequality, financial anxieties, dating life...When Richard Dawkins came up with the theory of memetics, he probably couldn't imagine how powerful that theory would be implemented; just look at how many upvotes sad and depressing memes in r/me_irl and toome_irlforme_irl have. We are all together in our loneliness these days, but you owe it to yourself to allow your self worth to blossom, and volunteering can accomplish that and much more; you can change your life for the better, someone else's life for the better, and make the world a little brighter.
I can relate to this video, alienating myself from real connections only to pursue online connections really does eventually break you down. Depression does suck but I think the hardest part is being able to take control back. Great video!
Glink your videos are dpe asf i always come back to this one, and i love whenever you touch on streamers and depression. thanks for putting in amazing effort to your documentaries.
This is the first time i ever comment on a video, and ive been using youtube for multiple of years. I'm not a good person and i seek change, and i am guilty of a lot of horrible things (well not extremely but things that would be considered douchey i guess). After watching the video, I feel inspired and like a push to be a better person. Glink I'm maybe a year late but that is one of the best videos I've ever watched, and i feel like im more motivated to connect with others even if it would lead them to think im cringy or i think they're weird, but i guess if I or the person just wants to connect with someone else and actually be a friend ( a good one), then thats fucking great. Thank you for making the vid man, I can without a doubt say that you have changed how people think, and I'm one of them.
I've noticed this very same thing and it could be that I've always been torn between being a gamer and being a full on hippy who appreciates the power of walking away from the computer and interacting with the real world. It can be a tough thing to balance. It's always offered me perspective into how full-time gaming can really fuck you up. Good video Glinks, you seem like a real dude. Props to listening to Rogan as well.
what i found out during my darkest period of depression was stagnation and loneliness like what you said. so what i started doing first is exercise, i set goals for my self and had a sense of progression which made me feel good. second was getting socially fluent. i had a mumbling problem, low voice, weak speech, Fixed it with guides online to become a better speaker. and MOST IMPORTANTLY find a passion to progress in also. Walk out in nature be friendly. doing all these things will make you a better/funner person to be around....you know that started me on this path....one punch man lmao. seriously. the story is about a guy who is the strongest but still gets bored/depressed but finds excitement/emotions again when he gains a goal.
this is spot on, i dont even stream but this did hit me in the chest. because i dont really have many friends, and i am pretty depresed, because all i do i sit inside and play WoW. good video man
Thank you for this video, it’s really help me understand a bit more and expand my perspective. There a lot of people going though this, no matter how hard you try, it always come back, it’s really sad in this day and age.
You hearted one of my comments on an old video of yours. It inspired me come back and get into your catalogue again. I love your propensity to advocate for mental illness. Never change bro. That’s a world changing type of light you shed.
Seeing Gross Gore kind of makes me feel sorry. He said he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (manic depression) and I as a bipolar too, know what he's currently going through. As of now, he has the manic period. Hence the car, tuning the car and spending alot of money overall. Soon enough the manic fits will be over and he is going to regret everything and get depressed as shit. Probably his activity as a streamer will suffer from it. I bet that he isn't as active as of now either, or not quite "there". Knowing him, he'll soon, in couple weeks, maybe months, start uploading whiny videos. If not, he paid shit loads of money for a psychologist for no reason.
very touchy subject glinks! I hope you never have to go through it. it's a horrible thing for real... it's not just sadness or loneliness, sometimes you just feel nothing. I never thought that a cause for my depression could have been streaming. After putting so much time/effort and finally started to grow, I just stopped caring. I love to game but it just didn't matter anymore. It doesn't always just happen to big streamers. But after 2 years I found my passion again! Sorry for the ramble this is just a topic that really isn't discussed that often due to the stigma.
I've definitely gone through episodes of it, I think we all do at some point, but to varying extents of course. I know what you mean by that feeling of "emptiness" its such a hopeless feeling. At the end of the day though, its never as bad as it seems. Appreciate the feedback man.
I was born with something called dyspraxia it wouldn't matter if i had a billion dollars i'd still suffer from anxiety and depression its not just nature and food an the rest of the things you listed some people can lack a certain chemical called serotonin which can stop reproducing i don't think i'v had serotonin since i was about 13 but one great man once said you gotta keep your head up an i'v went off them words ever since.
Can I just ask, why do people ridicule someone such as Justin Bieber and say that he has all the money and fame in the world so he can't complain yet there are videos like this that people agree on? People are so hypocritical and full of it.
What the hell are you trying to achieve with such a moronic question? The "people" you mention in your comment are billions of people who, oh surprise, aren't all same meaning people don't have same opinions unless you are pointing out on a group of people. Justin Bieber has nothing to do with this video, I have no idea why you mention him? This video is about streamers who sit in their rooms being public for hours and hours everyday entertaining people, while pop singers are a whole different entertainment proffesion, they don't have to do such thing as sitting in a dark room for hours everyday on daily basis. While streamers and singers do share the problem of not being able to get close friends because of their distrust in people for getting used by one or few, then they always have the impression that people like them not in personal way but rather in materialistic way because of fame and money.
+DarkAnima Why do you care what some people said about jb? Express your own opinion, do you think that people are assholes if they complain that fame and money cant fullfill them? People who think that of fame and money are going to fullfiill them sre going to say yes, they are assholes while people who think thr opposite will say no.

I think streaming isolates them to a rather extreme degree, even if they're in a house with people in it they are literally stuck in this position where putting on headphones and focusing on a monitor is pretty much their living. Pretty much like you heard Reckful say in that clip "where do you go to meet new people" - there's a feeling of loneliness. I also find isolated people to have far more time on their hands to think about all the shit that goes on in the world as well which probably doesn't help. Anyway enough rambling, great video mate you've earned yourself a sub.
Good to see your more humane side glinkz. I've always had you in the back of my mind as someone to dislike because of how many other wow streamers have talked about you, but it was a well done video. More and more people seem to becoming aware of these issues at a deeper level than 'money doesn't buy happiness' which people are well aware of in the corporate world.
I was at a party with Mitch Jones in 2016, and the more he drank the more depressed he got. He opened up a lot about girls trying to use him for views, feeling like his wow content was getting stale, and the general stress of plebs constantly giving him shit...we sat and talked and drank about how to combat this stuff so I really respect you bringing this shit to light. They're totally normal people as cool as it is to see them online they're all going through shit too. If you get a chance to sit down and be a genuine friend to a streamer who have filled that entertainment void in our lives in this modern era I'm sure they'd appreciate that. :)
great video, man. good job. im replaying it to remind myself that i dont have depression and just tired of events happening around me. this vid just cheers me up at the end. thanks a lot.
you all are missing the obvious. being famous on twitch is like being famous in an virtual reality game, aka worthless. it's harsh reality and many will disagree but the evidence is all there. being a famous streamer is a shallow achievement, it's partly due to our culture though. fame in general is pretty shallow but it's even worse as a video game streamer, since it's not valued all that much. the opportunity cost of being a full-time streamer is also incredibly high and the reward besides the money is non-existent. as fun as video games are, they're not fulfilling. they're not like a sport which has history attached to it, your achievements in a video game become obsolete once another game comes out. combine the lack of value of the activity, the fickle nature of gaming audiences, and how fleeting this fame is, and you get a perfect recipe for a very unhappy person. you've isolated yourself from the world, and have pretty much nothing to show for once it's all over. your twitch fame won't last that long. if achieving your goal caused unhappiness then literally the whole world would be suicidal. the failures of the world would be suicidal, and so would the successful since well they're successful which according to everyone is going to make you depressed? if the fame associated with being a full-time streamer was the same as being a professional athlete like an NFL player, and could stand the test of time then the situation would be different.
***** a famous musician who actually makes great music, creates something of great value. something that they can be proud of and will be remembered long after they're gone. now if you're garbage as a musician then you may go through an existential crisis too. of course some very successful artists do suffer from mental illness but they've usually been struggling with it way before they became famous or something traumatic happened to them in the middle of their career. the rock n roll life style doesn't help either. the music industry is a very harsh place. i'm not saying that being a famous streamer is worthless, it's a great way of making tons of cash, but if fame, love, sex, and happiness is what you're doing it for then you're in for a very unpleasant surprise. your fame means nothing outside of twitch. your audience is usually full of losers. again this is another harsh truth but no sane person with an actual life would spend hours watching someone else play video games while talking to their friends on skype. then go on and donate their hard earned cash. it's literally worse than watching a reality tv show like the kardashians. being a famous streamer is like being royalty to those with no life. it's great for making money but that's about it. Especially if you're a girl. hell you don't even have to be attractive since you're probably the first girl that's actually ever paid any attention to them. it's insane, it's like being a cam girl without having to be attractive and do anything. i mean the fact that body odor is such a huge issue at conventions and tournaments, tell you what kind of people you're dealing with. of course there are exception, if you're trying to improve at a game, it's a very good idea to watch a pro player. some streamers are also very knowledgeable about their game too. but unfortunately those users usually aren't part of the core user base of a streamer. at the end of the day, most people would rather use their free time playing a game then watching a stranger play over the internet.
john doe I'm gonna be honest, I haven't read even a quarter of what you wrote. I guess what you're getting at is that twitch fame basically means nothing outside the twitch community and that musicians actually make something for people to enjoy. Now, maybe a musician was a bad comparison, let's take a TV host or something. Why would a TV host be any more important or valid than a twitch streamer? The only difference is that the TV host probably reaches a wider audience, but essentially they provide the same kind of entertainment.
Great video. I was thinking about all this shit since the other day. Also, I feel that there is a stigma about talking about depression, and friendship and all that type of stuff...so thanks for bringing it up.
I'm usually not the one to comment, like or even subscribe to people. I just watch and go to the next recommended video.. But I gotta say, this video really got to me. I recently started exercising, cutting down on the crappy food and finding myself a decent job that I am alright with. I already notice difference in my happiness over all. You make up some really great points in this video, I hope people will find their way to this video and at least attempt to get a grip on their life situation. You got yourself a like and a sub, great video man. Keep it up
Not to be like that but there are bound to be some internet / twitch people that are depressed, have u seen the stats / ratio of people with depression? Btw Reckful was more depressed before streaming. I find most streamers just ccomplain alot over smallest things..
1:09 this is literally on point, money doesn't fix being depressed, it gives confidence and financial security yes, but realistically speaking it cant get you a true connection and bond to a person that you seriously need, i know this because its sadly what ive known for a long time
Depends, some streamers out there grew their community to be a "normal" one. Look at Cohhcarnage, he has a decently big community (from 7k to 10k+ viewers each stream) and has built his streaming persona to be the most normal and friendly guy. Guys like Lirik and Summit are extremely popular and I wouldnt call too abnormal either, they are entertaining but not as extreme as Mitch or Reckful.
BlackIce No obviously not, if you follow what he does with JP on Dropped Frames he does swear there and is not restricted by the rules of his channel, but all in all he is a very normal guy, like a lot of other streamers are. Then there are these guys that attract a lot of viewers by being more extreme with their persona on stream or just being abnormal : old soda, mitch etc..
That is somewhat true, but I think you phrase it in a bad light. I'll put it this way, you have to be unique and stand out to be popular and followed usually.
i dont think its right for streamers to get depressed by viewer count, people stream to have fun and maybe make a living, people shouldnt look at it like a job, and take in the good shit about streaming and not think about the bad shit
I read a heavy RUclips viewer’s comment once upon a time… they said something to the affect of-if you find yourself surrounded by the darkness ,that means YOU ARE THE LIGHT. I don’t want to be a depressed moth, Bro, and that what that sounds like to me. Moths are awesome little creatures and I love the Mothman. Now I’m no longer focusing on my depression…I’m stressed and worried about Moth-man’s health stats… Thank yuns for being a light in the darkness. There’s so many streamers that have helped people through the worst moments of a persons life and even helped them in ways you couldn’t explain/understand. If I can or could, I would do the same for them.
This is a very awesome video that you did! I feel ashamed not seeing this earlier before. Hope you are healthy physically and mentally and are doing well Glink!
Well, we were kinda evolved to our current form by the time we started getting really creative and started agriculture. It is less than 10,000 years since we started getting organised, and we have so much ahead of us hopefully.
Creativity helps hunter gatherers...Don't you think that making effective spears/bows and perfecting crafts like that helped their lifestyle? Don't kid yourself.
If they trap themselves in the room it might not be the reason the depression exists. It might just be them trying to find comfort in that kind of lifestyle but in reality it worsens it.
I have had Clinical Depression, and having severe depression at the moment, I can understand the link of isolation of non physical interaction, the negative interaction , the putting on a act, repetitive tasks, takes a whole toll, sounds cheesy but work/life balance and learning on how to deal with the good as well as the bad.
It's only when all your basic physiological needs are met that you can start to focus on emotional issues. Africans don't have the time to ponder about if their life turned out the way they wanted it to, they're too busy getting enough food to make it through the week.
you have been making some good videos and have been getting the attention of alot of people recently. Good work and please do keep this sort of content rolling. Im a psych major and i love this stuff.
First of all thanks so much for that encouragement, and you're right, it's been really cool to see alot of people I know and admire liking my videos. Second, that's awesome that you're a psych major, I've always been interested in the field but haven't really taken any proper courses or anything on it. It definitely is a big theme of how I analyze things though!
20 Year old boys in 1940s were depressed because of fighting in wars, 2017 20 year olds are depressed because they play games all day and make a tonne of money. Not trying to take away anything from your video nor am I bashing these people I just think it's an interesting comparison.
But was the depression already there for the gamer? Most likely. The factors are different. Fighting in a war can cause PTSD and it is not to be confused with depression, however, it's certainly possible to develop both.
"Fucking 20 year olds these days are such pussies!! Back in the day 20 year olds fought in wars we werent pussified back then!!! Im not trying to shit on these people tho just an interesting comparison :)"
First of all, they never said they didnt want to stream. They simply dont get much social interaction. If all you think affects depression is how hard their job is, you have a ridiculously shallow mind. Not having much interaction at all with other people could leave you feeling as if nobody cares. Also, there is a severe lack of progression in streaming that you don't see in other professions. You must have the IQ of a 3rd grader.
GravitySmashify now see here, I could take all that you said seriously, but because you insulted me twice I'm just going to asume I was right and you got upset. Also There is no reason to be depressed beeing payed to play video games... that's all and you know this. P.s: chill.
João Sampaio Wow, that is a ridiculous assumption. Based on your superficial analysis of someone's personality and mental issues, and how you felt the need to express that you believe the only reason depression should occur is because of the ease of their occupation, how can I not feel that you are of way below average intelligence. The truth is that without human interaction, progression, support, an active lifestyle, people might feel depressed. Are you meaning to tell me the only reason people should feel depressed is if their job is hard?
GravitySmashify dude, two things: 1- you are thinking too deeply about this shit 2- If you are a big time streamer getting tons of donations and girls literally trying to hook up with you, it might sound A LITTLE BIT of a douche move to cry on stream about depression. Depression is having college bills to pay and at the same time, provide for yourself and having to work some random shitty job just to manage and because of this you only talk to people around your workplace and all your real friends disapeared overtime. And what about time? there is no time, they have tons of offstream time to do all the shit that makes them happy. people like me have almost no time buddy, specially no time to complain. So I'm sorry that you think I THINK that FAMOUS people beeing depressed over athousand dollar salary by playing video games over the internet is so crazy to you, but that just goes to show (ironically) that you never had a real job aswell... That's all. pay some bills get back to me in 3 months, and check back on this comment. Just don't facepalm so hard that it will kill you kid.
This is sort of a random question, but is it bad that I tend to latch on to streamers/youtubers/vtubers that have exhibited signs of mental health issues? Idk, I just tend to be drawn to those kinds of people because I feel like I can relate to them.
sad to see this happen to so many streamers. Trick2G just released a video about his depression and it was just sad to watch. Glad you made this video, it was very well done.
I don't really get out much but two things have been amazing for my life: being a cashier, and playing magic the gathering. Being a cashier is awesome because I get to talk to people as much or as little as I want every day that I work and I get to feel a part of something bigger than me. Playing magic gives me a social outlet that I have to be in person to do, and I've met a few amazing people that I'm very close with thanks to magic. I guess if you take my case as an example, if you have hobbies or a job that make you go somewhere and be around people you generally do better. I used to be hella introverted and socially anxious, but through basically forcing myself at first to go to a game store to play magic (the first time I was so scared I was shaking the whole time .-.) and through needing to talk to people because of my job I've opened up a lot more and feel happy.
Just found your channel and it's great, I'm watching all your videos. Crazy to think you only have 30k, the quality and real ness of your videos make me really appreciate them. Keep on growing man, but don't forget to have a life outside of RUclips. Just subbed, looking forward to your next video!
This video is pretty accurate, it's seems like an endless pit once you experience it, when it first shows up, and then it affects your streams (in my case), and it affects your viewer count which causes even more depression and then you start doubting yourself and start being insecure which causes even more depression. Everyone wants to be a big streamer, I stream for a year and a half now and have only grown to have 380+ followers
3 years before Reckful took his life leading to everyone writing articles on streamers and depression Glink was here doing it
RIP Reckful
Twitch chat doesn't help with depression
XMACHOXMANX twitch chat causes depression, man the twitch chat is fucking RUTHLESS if you make 1 mistake they will NOT shut up about it
My brother wasn't a streamer but he killed himself last year a few days before Christmas. Depression is a mental illness. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain. What you've said here glinks is really spot on. The feeling of not progressing or stagnating in your life is horrible. People need to feel like they have a purpose and my guess is that if your doing the same thing day in day out for years...eventually your going to break and your going to need a change.
so true its hard to change with no motivation
If it's actually chemical imbalances in your brain, isn't that physical then?
I'm not sure. Good question. Maybe it is considered Mental cus the chemicals affect you as a person and you're mind/mood/etc?
Chemical imbalances? I call it WEAKNESS that's why we in Sparta killed the weak right after they were born!
BunnyLovesHam ha
Depression isn't beautiful. Depression is bad hygiene, dirty dishes, and a sore body from sleeping too much. Depression is having 3 friends that are only still around because they have the patience and love of a saint. Depression is crying until there's no more tears, just dry heaving and sobbing until you're gasping for your next breath. Depression is staring at the ceiling until your eyes burn because you forget to blink. Depression is making your family cry because they think you don't love them anymore when you're distant and distracted. Depression is somatic as well as emotional, an emptiness you can physically feel.
daniel mayer This is exactly what I go through, well put brother. Media never represents these symptoms.
I've noticed that people I know with "functioning depression" have some of the worst depression for numerous reasons
As far as hotlines, be very careful. I have a family member who called one in desperation a few years ago, the cops came to do a wellness check on her then started asking her if she was from Syria and asked to see her i.d. Can you imagine?
3 genuine friends? Get on my level.
this is actually a really good video, not only for streamers to watch but also for their viewers.
Really appreciate that man, I'll do my best to keep it up!
I feel like alot of people go through similar feelings expressed in this video, share some of your experiences in the comments, I'd love to see people's backstories and perspectives.
good guy glinkz
A lot? Millions of people kill themselves each year. Way to go, Detective.
Oh indeedy! But advertising gets em first. It's like school lube.
I'm doing something I love. Construction. You get to be outside and do
physical activity. No artificial lights or sitting in front of a desk.
And all top of that, I exercise regularly and eat as healthy as I can.
Some may think, that my job is shit and I don't get paid enough or that
my life is boring because I don't go out drinking and smoking. I also
cut out the rotten people out of my life and left the ones that really
fucking care. I have a quarter of the amount of friends I used to have,
but at least they are all actually my friends now.
To be honest, I've never been happier. I feel awesome all the time, even
when everything slaps me in the face. I just can't help it but smile.
I hope I got my message clear since I'm not a native speaker.
And I think your video was awesome and eye opening! Thanks
:)
Hoodmonger where are you from

Also, sorry the intro was loud as fuck. Trying to get better at making videos ^^
Don't worry about it ,you're doing well :)
lol, as long as you're self aware things should be good. I love your work.
Lol I think you've made enough to have figured it out
No hate just saying.
Playing games for long hours caused me some major depression too. People should understand that everything has its downside and while they may love gaming, it will cause depression and it will eat hours and hours of your life.
and sitting in an office 8 hours a day doesnt?
Yeah sitting in an office can cause depression.. the problem though with the majority of gamers who aren't streamers are living a life with artificial fulfillment nothing that is real. Best thing is to find your center and what is important to you and what really matters. Everyone is miserable, life is hard. But when you know the world doesnt owe you anything atleast it can prevent you from falling down a dark path.
Not being able to play games makes me have depression, the only thing I really like to do
+Strife same with me too. Its the only thing i enjoy and nothing else brings me joy.
Well my friends and family give me joy, but its my only hobby that does
The games getting released nowadays are making me depressed.
2016 is a shitty year.

I don’t need to imagine it 😎
@@mousemoss Got it mate😎

I think Ice_Poseidon has it the worst. I feel terrible for him.. FeelsBadMan

Just wanted to say that this is one of the more important videos i've seen. I know its a year old but i appreciated this video very much.
Dude, this was a great way to summarize a serious issue that is often unspoken!
Congrats on missing the point of the video
hey.. I have never seen your channel before but I appreciate so much the positive message you are spreading. Thanks for that!
If we assume that, for the sake of the analysis, we would have to search for a general thing among those people, which is, well, streaming/playing games:)
Of course, everyone is an individual, but we can talk about things which are indicative.
In other words
"A lot of people put their whole lives/self into a stream, it worries me that they sometimes to a degree to forget about whats really going on in their life"
would be the unconscious goal, rather than some side consequence.
Love coming back to this video when I'm down, really helps shed light
It's not that being lonely causes depression, it's the thought of being lonely that causes depression. You are constantly doing something. So you don't think about the root of the problem. when you don't do anything you begin to think And when you think you remember, that is when you begin to feel depression. That was my case anyway. I began to step away from those thoughts of being lonely because it's not what I want, so why think it. We have the power to remember the past and think about the future, and so we forget about the present.
I hope this video never goes away because it's the only place where I can find that clip of Reckful dancing in the arena :( RIP man we'll all miss you
I am feeling sad nonstop. Nothing makes me happy, im like a robot just helping others feel happy and dont care about myself.
go pens
If they are depressed and successful and are lonely why dont they buy pets

They don't get depressed because they stream. They stream because they're depressed.
This. Listen to this man.
this
by reading your comment, I see you have no streaming experience.
what.... this isn't even remotely true lol
Hospice thrift stores always need help as well, and you can raise money for families in their most trying times *and* get first dibs on nice discounted furniture and clothes
Or you could do what I did and have puppy time anytime, literally I have a key to the shelter and anytime I'm sad or bored, I can make a literal puppy cuddle puddle.
Great video!
watching this after reckful death hits you differently
Glink your videos are dpe asf i always come back to this one, and i love whenever you touch on streamers and depression. thanks for putting in amazing effort to your documentaries.
ending was heartwarming, thanks
Very nice video man! No clickbait and actually good information and built up arguments, hard to find these days..
Yeah for sure man, I love Rogan and other awesome podcasters. Thanks for your insightful comment = ]
I dont wanna die, I just want the pain to end.
what i found out during my darkest period of depression was stagnation and loneliness like what you said. so what i started doing first is exercise, i set goals for my self and had a sense of progression which made me feel good. second was getting socially fluent. i had a mumbling problem, low voice, weak speech, Fixed it with guides online to become a better speaker. and MOST IMPORTANTLY find a passion to progress in also. Walk out in nature be friendly. doing all these things will make you a better/funner person to be around....you know that started me on this path....one punch man lmao. seriously. the story is about a guy who is the strongest but still gets bored/depressed but finds excitement/emotions again when he gains a goal.
Just wanna say that this vid is more relevant than ever. I know Etika isn’t really a streamer but it still relates I think.
he was a streamer. he started and ended as a streamer
this is spot on, i dont even stream but this did hit me in the chest. because i dont really have many friends, and i am pretty depresed, because all i do i sit inside and play WoW.
good video man
Ice breaking down brought me to tears :(
Thank you for this video, it’s really help me understand a bit more and expand my perspective. There a lot of people going though this, no matter how hard you try, it always come back, it’s really sad in this day and age.
RIP Reckful. Wish this message was being taken more seriously, I fear an epidemic is forming and I ain't talking about covid.
Dyspraxia is a physical issue. It's not a mental health issue.
That GTA cheats comparison you made is so true.
Can I just ask, why do people ridicule someone such as Justin Bieber and say that he has all the money and fame in the world so he can't complain yet there are videos like this that people agree on? People are so hypocritical and full of it.
DarkAnima He doesn't complain about fame he drunk drives and talks shit

TES:V Rocks He does complain about it, and gets shit for it.
Anyway enough rambling, great video mate you've earned yourself a sub.
this video is more important than ever
Good to see your more humane side glinkz. I've always had you in the back of my mind as someone to dislike because of how many other wow streamers have talked about you, but it was a well done video. More and more people seem to becoming aware of these issues at a deeper level than 'money doesn't buy happiness' which people are well aware of in the corporate world.
turns out when you sit in front of your computer screen for 12 hours a day you end up being unhealthy
Good video. Really well formatted. Nice.
Thank you, appreciate the feedback!
great video, man.
good job.
im replaying it to remind myself that i dont have depression and just tired of events happening around me.
this vid just cheers me up at the end.
thanks a lot.
Sad but true, I see this all the time.
I know I'm 2 years late, but RUclips's recommendation system is weird. Thank you so much for making this video, truly.
rip reckful :(
Coming back to this video reminds me of why I honestly love glink so much his videos are amazing and the discussion is so eye opening.
RIP Reckful
you all are missing the obvious. being famous on twitch is like being famous in an virtual reality game, aka worthless. it's harsh reality and many will disagree but the evidence is all there. being a famous streamer is a shallow achievement, it's partly due to our culture though. fame in general is pretty shallow but it's even worse as a video game streamer, since it's not valued all that much. the opportunity cost of being a full-time streamer is also incredibly high and the reward besides the money is non-existent. as fun as video games are, they're not fulfilling. they're not like a sport which has history attached to it, your achievements in a video game become obsolete once another game comes out. combine the lack of value of the activity, the fickle nature of gaming audiences, and how fleeting this fame is, and you get a perfect recipe for a very unhappy person. you've isolated yourself from the world, and have pretty much nothing to show for once it's all over. your twitch fame won't last that long. if achieving your goal caused unhappiness then literally the whole world would be suicidal. the failures of the world would be suicidal, and so would the successful since well they're successful which according to everyone is going to make you depressed? if the fame associated with being a full-time streamer was the same as being a professional athlete like an NFL player, and could stand the test of time then the situation would be different.
dafuq u on bout m8 aka worthless? lmao
"Worthless" how is it any less worth than being famous as a musician?
Especially if you're a girl. hell you don't even have to be attractive since you're probably the first girl that's actually ever paid any attention to them. it's insane, it's like being a cam girl without having to be attractive and do anything. i mean the fact that body odor is such a huge issue at conventions and tournaments, tell you what kind of people you're dealing with.
of course there are exception, if you're trying to improve at a game, it's a very good idea to watch a pro player. some streamers are also very knowledgeable about their game too. but unfortunately those users usually aren't part of the core user base of a streamer. at the end of the day, most people would rather use their free time playing a game then watching a stranger play over the internet.
john doe jesus you sound like a preacher
john doe I'm gonna be honest, I haven't read even a quarter of what you wrote.
Also, I feel that there is a stigma about talking about depression, and friendship and all that type of stuff...so thanks for bringing it up.
i'll be your friend Glink.
Ty jeremy
Honestly what a great video this was. I've had my share of depression and you put a good light on it great work.
Now imagine not being rich or having thousands of fans and being depressed
Spaghetti Forgetti you lack empathy
Depression is depression, stop trying to blackpill
Spaghetti Forgetti me
dude serious your presentation of gathered information and delivery is extremely well done.
sry abit drunk and probably not explaining mysrlf well.
We all need to unplug. I'm 40 yrs old and i miss the world before cell phones came into existence.
1:09 this is literally on point, money doesn't fix being depressed, it gives confidence and financial security yes, but realistically speaking it cant get you a true connection and bond to a person that you seriously need, i know this because its sadly what ive known for a long time
You are my favorite person in the world, I like you alot Glink :)
You're tied with everyone else for my favorite person!
i dont know how this hasnt got more views, this is seriously a good video, needs more recognition
Hitler died in 1945. Trump was born in 1945 coincidence? I think not. Mystery? Maybe. Hotel? Trivago.
Another great video g. I don't know how i didn't find you before, great insight into a complex issue.
You can't be a big twitch streamer and be normal. There's something wrong with every top twitch streamer, and that's why they are popular.
Obviously, it's not fun to watch someone "normal"
Depends, some streamers out there grew their community to be a "normal" one. Look at Cohhcarnage, he has a decently big community (from 7k to 10k+ viewers each stream) and has built his streaming persona to be the most normal and friendly guy. Guys like Lirik and Summit are extremely popular and I wouldnt call too abnormal either, they are entertaining but not as extreme as Mitch or Reckful.
Roggay47
His shtick is being overly nice tho, I really doubt he's always like that. But yea, I know about him, I prefer DansGame tho.
I'll put it this way, you have to be unique and stand out to be popular and followed usually.
thanks for making this video. its really inspiring even to those who aren't twitch streamers.
i dont think its right for streamers to get depressed by viewer count, people stream to have fun and maybe make a living, people shouldnt look at it like a job, and take in the good shit about streaming and not think about the bad shit
I read a heavy RUclips viewer’s comment once upon a time…
they said something to the affect of-if you find yourself surrounded by the darkness ,that means YOU ARE THE LIGHT.
I don’t want to be a depressed moth, Bro, and that what that sounds like to me.
Moths are awesome little creatures and I love the Mothman.
Now I’m no longer focusing on my depression…I’m stressed and worried about Moth-man’s health stats…
Thank yuns for being a light in the darkness. There’s so many streamers that have helped people through the worst moments of a persons life and even helped them in ways you couldn’t explain/understand. If I can or could, I would do the same for them.
1. Stream
2. Admit you are depressed
3. Viewers feel bad for you
4. Profit?
This is a very awesome video that you did! I feel ashamed not seeing this earlier before. Hope you are healthy physically and mentally and are doing well Glink!
Are you psychologist?
This got real deep real fast, brilliant video man.
that joe rogan clip was bullshit, humans arent just hutner gatherers, we're also creative its how organized farming started
Well, we were kinda evolved to our current form by the time we started getting really creative and started agriculture. It is less than 10,000 years since we started getting organised, and we have so much ahead of us hopefully.
wat
ooga booga yer numtpy
Creativity helps hunter gatherers...Don't you think that making effective spears/bows and perfecting crafts like that helped their lifestyle? Don't kid yourself.
haha, who is disputing creativity? "Don't kid yourself" that anyone is. lol
Always idiots on the internets
thanks you really hit the mark even ppl that are watching streams do nothing helthy like my self you really hit a spot keep up the good work bud
It's because you trap yourself in your room.
If they trap themselves in the room it might not be the reason the depression exists. It might just be them trying to find comfort in that kind of lifestyle but in reality it worsens it.
I have had Clinical Depression, and having severe depression at the moment, I can understand the link of isolation of non physical interaction, the negative interaction , the putting on a act, repetitive tasks, takes a whole toll, sounds cheesy but work/life balance and learning on how to deal with the good as well as the bad.
first world country problems
+SunnyD kinda true man.. its rare here where I live
It really is more rare in poorer countries. Families are a lot closer and happier.
It's only when all your basic physiological needs are met that you can start to focus on emotional issues. Africans don't have the time to ponder about if their life turned out the way they wanted it to, they're too busy getting enough food to make it through the week.
Im pretty sure SunnyD was being sarcastic lol
Mr Chaser yeah but still true lol
you have been making some good videos and have been getting the attention of alot of people recently.
Fighting in a war can cause PTSD and it is not to be confused with depression, however, it's certainly possible to develop both.
ptsd =/= depression
Different periods brings different challenges
"Fucking 20 year olds these days are such pussies!! Back in the day 20 year olds fought in wars we werent pussified back then!!! Im not trying to shit on these people tho just an interesting comparison :)"
great video man! you only hear about the succes and the good stuff but most ppl are having a hard
Literally put them @ mcdonalds for 3 months. They'll beg to stream!
LOL
GravitySmashify dude, two things:
1- you are thinking too deeply about this shit
2- If you are a big time streamer getting tons of donations and girls literally trying to hook up with you, it might sound A LITTLE BIT of a douche move to cry on stream about depression.
Glad i found this channel!
Just started out and it's hard to find good information about the reality of social media. Thank you.
Hits hard watching Reckful's clips in your video really hard
This video is pretty accurate, it's seems like an endless pit once you experience it, when it first shows up, and then it affects your streams (in my case), and it affects your viewer count which causes even more depression and then you start doubting yourself and start being insecure which causes even more depression. Everyone wants to be a big streamer, I stream for a year and a half now and have only grown to have 380+ followers
