A real female vocalist or musician is someone like Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Billie Holiday, Lady Gaga, Nina Simone. These women are actually musically gifted and understand musical theory... They're actually trained musicians. Taylor Swift is just a pop star. I'm not sure what age you are so maybe you're at the age where you think pop music is awesome but pop music is not difficult nor is it real music. Pop music does not take musical skill or require you to be a real musician. It is generic lyrics and beats looped over and over overly produced and artificially enhanced tracks. There is no complex music structure/theory, there are no odd times signatures there is nothing that resembles what real music is. If the phrases I used are not things you are familiar with that is also an example how pop music is not real music. There is nothing lyrically or musically complex about any of Taylor Swift's albums. In fact artists like her and pop music are making society dumber. I respect your right to like Taylor Swift and whatever type of music you prefer and you don't have to agree with me, but most real musicians will tell you the same about taylor swift. If you want to go listen to a really amazing female musician go listen to some Nina Simone, I'm sure you will have a new appreciation for music.
@@statusquoreject Sorry, but where did I ever say you're not allowed to have your own opinion? I quote from my previous comment: "But if you don't like her music or her in general, you can obviously have your own opinion." So, with that said, we all get to like who we like..and if pop music brings people joy, you or I don't get to invalidate the genre. I, for one, listen to her for her lyrics.. possibly why Evermore and Folklore are my favourite albums. And every critic or musician I have read/heard, talking about them has praised these albums. But I do agree with you on one point: pop music is overshadowing other genres that deserve so much more viewership and do require a lot of skill. And yes, there are artists that are better vocalists, as you named. But that does not mean people should undermine another person's hard work. This woman has been writing and creating music and been in the music industry for over 15 years; and while she may not be the best singer there is, she HAS improved. Her music brings so much joy to so many people, and isn't that the most important thing about music? I, for one, like to listen to a variety of artists on different levels of success and in a lot of languages, even ones that I cannot speak lol, so I do know that there are people out there who deserve so much more recognition than they get. Anyway, this has been rather long. Have a good day.
@@nyx4078 well you told me I can't a joke when I was being sarcastic with my original comment but I guess the sarcasm didn't come through well. About music, i can respect your POV and where you're coming from but I am not invalidating a genre of music by pointing out TS is not a musician and pop music doesn't require a person to be a "musician." I have studied music for 40 yrs and as musician pop music does not get much respect with formally trained musicians. It's not really formal music. You just may have a different definition of a "musician" is than what the technical term is and that's fine, but words matter. I'm guessing by your name that you might be Indian/punjabi (so am I) and I dont know if you know who Anoushka Shankar is but I consider her the definition of a true musician because she's classically trained and has studied musical theory whereas Taylor Swift is just a girl who kind of can carry a tune and plays the guitar a little. I highly doubt Taylor Swift has the skill to play her guitar to the level Anoushka Shankar can play the sitar. Music classes and music theory are a real thing. Music structure and timing are real musical concepts. It's not me just being a jerk trying to invalidate pop music. Being trained in those things are what define someone as a musician and Taylor Swift is not trained in those things. Calling people like TS musicians is like someone with a smartphone camera calling themself a photographer, or someone who makes a beat on their computer a DJ, or someone who can draws in their spare time an artist. There's a lot more to it is what I'm saying and the words have meanings which matter. Most of TS's songs are about her relationships so it's even hard to see her as a much of a lyricist plus she also doesn't write all her own songs. I also feel like she plays the victim a lot and the Netflix special she was unbearable. Regardless, I'm glad you're familiar with some of the other musicians I mentioned.... The thing is 50 years from now the musicians I mentioned will still be very famous and renowned but I highly doubt Taylor Swift will carry the same kind of weight or memory. But hey if you like Taylor Swift and she makes you happy then by all means listen to whoever you love. If Taytay does it for you then I'm glad you have someone who brings you joy. Have a wonderful day.
Our professors would always tell us to read, read, read, because they say that we can’t write without reading and Taylor is the best example. The reason why she’s so good at writing is because she reads good books

Stargirl probably hits harder when you're a bullied middle schooler in America (like, I would have been terrified of her if she was an actual classmate of mine, but it was one of my favorite required books in 7th grade).
Charlotte did all of what she did to save Wilbur. She wanted to help him, and sometimes you do things for your friends that nobody can see and appreciate. But you know that your friend will forever be grateful.
now I understand the line "Burton to this Taylor" in one if her songs. This has been a fun video and also learning about Taylor's personality indirectly.
"Imagine standing there, you look to your left and it's taylor freaking swift. I think i would die, on the spot..that would be it." The way he was dead serious about it
I actually loved stargirl as a teen. It was nice to see a weird girl at the forefront of a book at a time when Harry Potter was ultra popular. So it probably doesn’t hold up now since weird and nerd culture is popular but in the 2000s this was pretty unique.
I cannot put into words how much I adore your channel! It’s pop culture, literature, fan culture all wrapped into one and it shows how everything is linked. I came for book reviews and I stayed for unbelievably witty and clever side comments.

Oh I'm so glad you like Taylor Swift. When people dismiss her, I instantly lose a bit of reespek. Sometimes Taylor sings about something and I think ''oh I know girl, been there, been there'' and then I realise, no, actually, I haven't. But she makes you feel that you've been through this too.
I'm pretty sure Taylor has read The seven husbands of evelyn hugo, because of death by a thousand cuts, the title of the song is a quote from the book.
If you enjoy literature and Taylor, you should check out English Teacher KP! She does literary analysis on a lot of Taylor's songs and I think her content is really good
Your thoughts on Stargirl had me throwing my headphones on my desk, man. One of the key things from that book that has stuck with me throughout the years is her unashamed kindness. She is openly kind to everyone, but she also does a lot anonymously. I think that yes, she is wild and there can be a lot going on with her at times, she would be respectful of everyone no matter their choice. But others choose to not be kind to her. There is also a lot to be said about the impact (both short and long term) of just one kind decision, as well.
Taylor is my favourite artist of all time. She doesn’t write music but poetry and this can’t be argued with. Since having a degree in English Literature and Creative writing, I am so grateful to say how thrilled I am to connect in such a pure sense emotionally to Taylor. Bow down to her for her mind ♥️✨
Did I watch all of Taylor’s music videos yesterday in celebration of the new release? Yes. Do I have an essay due? Yes, multiple. Will I watch this video on repeat? YES. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
She's a decent songwriter of easy to listen pop songs. That's a big talent but it's quite a reach to call her the best poet ans storyteller of our century. I mean I really hope you realize that.
@@nationalhamleague5352 I definitely wouldn’t say she’s the best poet of our century but I wouldn’t reduce her work to simply pop music either. A lot of her radio singles to make money don’t represent her actual discography tbh.
You should do a video talking about all the literary and book references in ‘You’ on Netflix, or read all the books that Joe recommends throughout the series :)

As far as the “eat, pray, love” she said she was broke. When she divorce she gave her husband everything just to be done. The money she took to go traveling for a year was the money she got for writing the book; it was her advance. She was a very established author before EPL. So yes she was incredibly privileged to have the ability to get back more than she lost. But she was broke when she divorced. He ex husband took both the houses, all the savings, and she was living in a rented 1 bed in NYC that she put on her credit card. It was situational broke, but she was broke.
you're completely right about folklore/evermore! she said in her December interview with Zane Lowe that the albums were a way to channel her own emotions/experiences, and some of her friends' experiences too, into characters and situations she's intrigued by. so yeah they definitely pull a lot from her life (and some are directly personal songs, like peace, invisible string, Marjorie). highly recommend that interview, it's a great insight into the process!

@@statusquoreject Sorry, but where did I ever say you're not allowed to have your own opinion? I quote from my previous comment: "But if you don't like her music or her in general, you can obviously have your own opinion."
So, with that said, we all get to like who we like..and if pop music brings people joy, you or I don't get to invalidate the genre.
This is so true, my mum always used to say this to me as a kid, and as a result, i love reading and writing! (and taylor)
The video as a list (because i'm obsessed with making lists)
01:15 furious love: elizabeth taylor, richard burton, and the marriage of the century (note: probably inspired the _wildest dreams_ video)
03:10 the hunger games by suzanne collins (tip: listen to _safe & sound_ it has folklore vibes)
06:16 eat pray love by elizabeth gilbert (you are what you read #1)
07:48 charlotte's web by e. b. white (you are what you read #2)
08:38 stargirl by jerry spinelli (summary: weird girl who stays true to herself; not jacks fav)
10:40 conversations with friends by sally rooney (note: joe aka william bowery will have a starring role in the hulu adaptation aHH)
12:31 rebecca by daphne du maurier (note: taylor didn't really recommended it, but it inspired _tolerate it_ just like jack suspected it)
13:18 the beautiful and damned by by f. scott fitzgerald (note: taylor loves fitzgerald)

Stargirl probably hits harder when you're a bullied middle schooler in America (like, I would have been terrified of her if she was an actual classmate of mine, but it was one of my favorite required books in 7th grade).
I was bullied horribly and related to her so much
in ready for it she says:
“and he can be my jailer,
burton to this taylor,

Yes! How did I miss this!! Her references are spot on, as usual ❤️

Charlotte did all of what she did to save Wilbur. She wanted to help him, and sometimes you do things for your friends that nobody can see and appreciate. But you know that your friend will forever be grateful.
THE intro is what I have been praying for the whole 2021. Noble prize to taylor
now I understand the line "Burton to this Taylor" in one if her songs. This has been a fun video and also learning about Taylor's personality indirectly.
"Imagine standing there, you look to your left and it's taylor freaking swift. I think i would die, on the spot..that would be it."
The way he was dead serious about it
I actually loved stargirl as a teen. It was nice to see a weird girl at the forefront of a book at a time when Harry Potter was ultra popular. So it probably doesn’t hold up now since weird and nerd culture is popular but in the 2000s this was pretty unique.
I’m literally listening to Taylor Swift right now, this couldn’t have come at a perfect time
imagine my inner conflict over liking this versus keeping it at an EXACT 130 likes
Listening to White Horse (Taylor's Version) right now.
I cannot put into words how much I adore your channel! It’s pop culture, literature, fan culture all wrapped into one and it shows how everything is linked. I came for book reviews and I stayed for unbelievably witty and clever side comments.
SCREAMED WHEN I SAW THE TITLE ✋🏼😳 the ig story already had me hyped up !!!!!!!
As someone who went to American public school, there is a mutual understanding that if one person starts clapping, everyone in the room joins them. Literally for no reason
“Freak of the week, seven days a week” alright, now imma use that everyday
It’s a lyric from WAP hahaha
“Certified freak, 7 days a week”
Oop, my roommate has that song on repeat and it flew right over my head 😪
Oh I'm so glad you like Taylor Swift. When people dismiss her, I instantly lose a bit of reespek. Sometimes Taylor sings about something and I think ''oh I know girl, been there, been there'' and then I realise, no, actually, I haven't. But she makes you feel that you've been through this too.
I'm pretty sure Taylor has read The seven husbands of evelyn hugo, because of death by a thousand cuts, the title of the song is a quote from the book.
The song was inspired by the Netflix movie Something Great
@@xbookwormqueenx yes!! but the title was a quote from the book
@Farabee Pushpita yes it could also be that
No its inspired by a movie and also its a very popular saying.
It’s literally a form of torture that was practiced in I think China in previous times. It’s not a book or a movie or a saying.

There is also a lot to be said about the impact (both short and long term) of just one kind decision, as well.
omg idk if i’ve ever been more excited for one of your videos
Taylor is my favourite artist of all time. She doesn’t write music but poetry and this can’t be argued with. Since having a degree in English Literature and Creative writing, I am so grateful to say how thrilled I am to connect in such a pure sense emotionally to Taylor. Bow down to her for her mind ♥️✨
Did I watch all of Taylor’s music videos yesterday in celebration of the new release? Yes.
Do I have an essay due? Yes, multiple.
Will I watch this video on repeat? YES.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

That's a one brilliant Ted talk!
Taylor is not just a singer-songwriter, she’s one of the best poetess and storyteller of our century.
a poet?
🙄
her poetry is a bit juvenile... for a woman her age
Or just talk about the series.. I love it. I do wonder what the book is like.

The Wildest Dreams video was definitely inspired by that story. Taylor Swift is a literature and song writing genius. She passed all of our expectations a LONG.. time ago.
The way Jack blessed us with all the Taylor puns ✨
I like how she recommended a variety of books people would actually read. I think so many celebrities don’t really read and they name a bunch of boring classics that make them seem smart instead of saying books they actually enjoy
