      I don't read for the authors, I read for the story. So don't think it matters if it was written by a man or a woman, if it's a genre you like, read it. Reading something written by a woman or a man for the sake of it, is completely pointless.

      @@yaeli_i_guess So? Why do they have to read female authors? People read what they like, maybe some aren't interested in reading books from female authors, and there's nothing wrong with that, it's a personal choice.

    When reading Tender is the Flesh, I really had to remind myself that this book is based in Argentina. Where meat is a huge part of culture and economy so once you place it in that context you can understand why veganism wasn't even a consideration. But still a wild quick read.

      I think people in the Western world need to remember that veganism isn’t accessible in all countries/regions lol in the Philippines, meat and farm animals are also a huge part of life (we have meat in our vegetable dishes) and culture so the transition to cannibalism over veganism in the book made huge sense

    • @nvrvnjv6362
      @nvrvnjv6362 Год назад +314

      Veganism wasn't even a consideration because the book is not about dietary choices, but a comment on capitalism, alienation of the worker class and body autonomy.

    • @pilarlorefice1142
      @pilarlorefice1142 Год назад +217

      As an argentinian, I feel like 75% of the reviews of this book miss this point and its sort of eurocentric. The unhingedness is an excuse to expose the (at least, argentinian) meat industry and human capability to harm and alienate. In a country with a recent history of dictatorship and genocide this work makes a whole new sense.
      The problem is that it's sold with the cannibalism plot but that's not the actual point.
      Also, the english translation is not as good as the actual writing.

      I think it's there mainly because he narrated one of the character POVs in the audiobook versions. I mean, it might also be a favourite YA of his, but he was the voice of Akos.

    Jack! about what you said on "no backup plan" about the education system sucking joy out of something you once loved: we're currently watching YOUR yt videos in ENGLISH CLASS
    I couldn't believe it at first cuz I've been watching you since years but yeah. The assignement is to write down how you review books and then make a "Booktube" recommendation yourself. I'M PRAYING that this doesn't ruin it for me. I really do.

    A Brief History of Nearly Everything was gifted to me by my uncle who works at the national lab here in the States. Can confirm it is an EXCELLENT book and definitely worth a read!
    I also read Eckhart Tolle's Power of Now when I was in deep and drowning in anxiety, panic, and depression and it was one of my first lights in the dark. It really helped me find my feet. So I know it sounds cheesy but I'm actually glad to see the author recommended.

    Chris Pine studied English at the University of California, Berkeley, and spent a year in the UK studying at my alma mater, the University of Leeds. I’m not surprised, therefore, at the quality of his reading matter. He also got to enjoy “supping warm beer” in Leeds, and likes to go back there when he can.
