I loved the twist at the end. It is about what you want to read and not the number indeed. I've read just over 100 books last year. And that really happened spontaneously. Key for me though is to always have a variety of books that I'm reading simultaneously. 1. Something physical/ereader that I really need attention to read 2. Something physical/ereader that I can binge away easily, even if I"m tired 3. Some manga, short stories collection or poetry 4. An audiobook for during chores and driving As you notice I do not wholeheartedly agree with your physical copy statement. I love reading physical copies, but my e-reader is very comfortable as well and does not distract me or slow me down as far as I can tell. So I think it really depends on how it affects you personally. Then again, the same goes for all tips. Some people really like reading one book at a time as well.
Congrats on the 100 books. Yes it's definitely personal preference, I also have a kindle that I really like but physical books that I can write on and highlight always my preferred choice if possible.
Use your local library as well as an independent bookshop or charity shop. You don't have to be the first person to have read the said book. Look for those little community bookshops, you know, the ones in old telephone boxes. Found some fantastic books in these.
Definitely. I found some great books from community book swaps last year, love finding something that you might not have necessarily brought from a shop but give it a go and end up loving it!
3-5 books at the same time are optimal for me. if I start reading more at the same time, I get overwhelmed and stressed. it's important to find your own balance.
I discovered your Tiktok when I moved from Canada to Orkney back in 2021. Thanks to you I recognised far more birds while living there than I otherwise would have. Now I'm back in Canada, but I'm still following your channels - love your philosophy on reading!
Excellent tips, George! The only time I managed 100 books was in the pandemic year and I doubt I'll ever manage that again. The only tip I don't follow is the physical books tip because I simply do not have the space for all the books and I really enjoy reading in my Kobo actually. But everything else was spot on, read multiple books, read what you want, yes! That Stephen King book is excellent.
Thank you. I did 100 in 2020 too but i was recovering from knee surgery, furloughed twice and lockdowns, so this was my attempt to see if I could do it without any of that. I think the physical book tip is best for beginners who dont read much at all or if you want to highlight and write notes probs best to buy it but theres definitely a place for the e-readers too. Thanks for watching and commenting 😊
@@georgecuckoo Yes, it's an amazing number on a regular year, well done! I still love the touch of books, it can definitely be more seductive than a screen.
Really enjoyed your video 👍 Great tips. I also prefer the physical book as I highlight and make notes. I also have several books on the go at one time.
For me Kindle it's better than a book. I can take notes it cares about my eyes, i can carry an entire library with me everywhere, it is small and portable etc etc
Hey, George! You're the only earnest guy I've seen talk about it this way, thank you! I think it's funny how some of these things become obvious once we've moved past the "to be read" pile, and how much people underplay the damage having a phone around can do. I've done a couple of these in brazillian portuguese as well, and over here most of the discourse gravitates around "Oh, look at me, me reads big books big time. Me smarter than you." Only thing I'd disagree on a somewhat philosophical basis is in regards to the physical books point. I (stoically) believe it's better to get by with the third best option every day than with the best one once a week haha Great video! P.S.: Oh, I've noticed you birdwatch. You should check "The peregrine", if you haven't already. Great book!
Hey thank you for such a nice comment. Really appreciate it thank you! I think I agree with you - I just know I can return easier to a physical book and see my notes etc. So if I had to pick a format, it would be the physical book. Loved the peregrine, read it a few years ago wit my work book club!
Once I started reading more often, reading more than one book came naturally just to read different things depending on my mood. It's a great tip! Before that I thought it would be very difficult to concentrate on more than one book at a time, but it's the same as watching more than one series at a time really. Great video!
Another tip: try making a reading journal. If you are crafty person, especially, it is fun to look back on your book reviews and spreads over the years. It's like scrapbooking for your reading journey.
Here is a few tips on how to retain information better while listening to audiobooks. Every time you find your mind wandering rewind the book to the last remembered place. Do this every time instead of just letting it play. Listening is a different skill to reading and you WILL get better at it over time as long as you're intentional. I also find doing a new task and listening to a book is very detrimental because most of your focus will be on the task at hand instead of the audiobook so only listen to audiobooks and do a task you are very familiar with. Before starting an audiobook do a small amount of research on the narrator. The book might be fantastic but if the narrator isn't so great you won't have a good time and makes listening even more of a struggle. Sometimes if you like an audiobook but you feel kind of lost just relisten to the book again. I know this sounds crazy but I've found more enjoyment out of a second listen than the first time. My first audiobook series was A Song of Ice and Fire and I listened to all 5 books and immediately started the first book over again after finishing the 5th book. That 2nd time was one of my favorite audiobooks experiences ever. Ive been listening to audiobooks since 2015 and have listened to a lot of "heavy" books. In my opinion listening makes those books way more digestable. Anyways great video! I found your tips very helpful
About a year or 2 ago I read around 80 books! I was so happy! Now I am reading philosophy (Plato and Nietzsche) and understanding so much! I couldn't do that before and I am so happy!
Great stuff! Well done. It's great to see progress. Reading is like anything else, the more you do the better you get and more you understand. Keep going!!
Already doing what you recommend - just checked to see if there were any new tips! But yes, can definitely support your recommendations as I’ve been reading well over a hundred books a year for several years now by using these exact methods. Thank you for posting your sound advice so that others can also enjoy reading as much as they want :)
I'll take a look thanks for the recommendation - Do you know if you can move your reviews and ratings over from goodreads onto another platform like storygraph?
Hello 👋 I just saw your TikTok about being a RUclipsr now :) I love birds so much, and books are pretty great too 😊 I’m aiming for 52 this year (books, not birds 😅)
Great tips. I especially like the one a lot of people seem to do of taking a book (whether physical or electronically) everywhere. All those times where you have to wait for someone, or for food etc in a cafe or restaurant get converted into 5 or 6 pages of a book. I much prefer physical books, but before it broke I would take my braille display/reader with me mainly because physical braille books are so big. That would be quite something, taking a volume of a braille book to a cafe! Anyway, I'm also terrible for not wanting to give up on a book I'm not enjoying. I have this thing of I've started something so have to finish t, so I struggle to df 1 or 2 books a year.
yeah I can imagine that bringing something large out with you would be difficult. I'm the same with the not-finishing books though, its hard to abandon it, especially if you have invested a lot of time into it already. It's something Im trying to improve on though, I'm reading a lot less this year and have already stopped some books I wasn't getting into.
I study literature in uni, and one of the things I had to unlearn first was reading before (and in) bed. seriously, when I had to read something for class I was always falling asleep 😅 So, no more reading before I go to sleep... instead I get up a bit earlier and read first thing in the morning (but still not in bed)
Hey, I love your suggestions! Every thing you say to do I’ve either been doing or started doing recently! The only thing I have difficulty with is audio books. I just can’t get into those unless it’s a short story or something. Maybe I’m disabled in some way or have the attention span of a five year old.
If I keep up my current pace I'd hit 100 books this year, but I really hope I don't. I'm injured at the moment and I've been sitting on my behind a lot more than normal the last several months, and I've been gravitating toward short books so far this year. Great tips!
Sorry to hear you're injured. I read a book called 'The Obstacle is the way' by Ryan Holiday when I was injured and waiting for me knee surgery and I thought that was great if you are interested. I read my fair share of short books last year too. This year I am easing off on the reading and, like I said at the end of the video, its much nicer to just enjoy reading and not going for a big target! 📚
I never start a book without finishing it. I don't have time to be reading partials of books and then stop without finishing them. In this manner I've gotten much better at determining which books I'll like before I even start them.
I am the same really. Do you find it frustrating? I sometimes push on with a book despite really not liking it when I know I should really start something else
I don't consider myself a particularly fast reader either. I know several people who can read much faster than me but I definitely got quicker last year as I read more.
A lot of common sense tips. I must admit, I do tend to defer to my phone more than I should and my reading suffers as a result. I also really don't do audio books, because I don't drive - which is where a lot of people seem to listen to them - and, as you mention, I don't retain as much when I'm just listening. I tend to drift off and lose some of what the narrator is saying. Lastly, I don't do as well reading multiple books at a time. I tend to lose track of the plot of a story and important details and so I find myself having to re-read pages or skim backwards to refresh my memory. I probably couldn't do more than two at a time, and they'd have to be very different from each other so that I can keep them straight.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Yeah driving is a main time when I listen to audiobooks but also a lot during chores, tidying / washing up etc. But definitely remember less so I tend to try and stick to fiction when listening as the facts just dont stick if I listen to non-fiction. Also having a non-fiction and a fiction book at the same time is about as much as I can manage at once
I like to do audio books for books I am suffering through while painting or doing something so I don't have to pay much attention and still finish the book and get to the next one
I hate when people call reading a hobby. Reading is essential to life. Reading is the most essential skill we learn, because everything follows on from it. The irony is that I don't read very much. I write more than I read now, even if it is only on RUclips.
I agree reading is a very essential skill but reading books for pleasure or enjoyment is definitely a hobby and one that unfortunately not many people take part in. I saw that 42% of college graduates never read another book again :O
I can tell you from personal experience that a paper book doesn't compare to a tablet or a large phone with an amoled screen. It has to be an Amoled/oled screen so that you can invert colors. So that the background of the book is really black and the text color is gray. The eyes get tired several times less than when reading a regular book.
Interesting, not heard about the inverting colours. I'll look it up. I like to fold down corners, underline and annotate my books and for me that's best done with a physical book. But whatever works for you, reading is the most important part rather than the format you do it
Since i love reading and search for it, it appears to me on youtube. BUt i completly disagree with turning a pleasurable and unique thing as reading like a competition. It makes no sense counting how much books we have read on a year, what makes sense is having pleasure with books or how much we learn from them
Exactly my point at the end of the video Hugo when I say don't set yourself a big target. However, the point for me was the challenge, could I do it? and I did and ended up discovering loads of good books and learning along the way. Things can both be pleasurable and a personal challenge at the same time. People count all sorts of things, workouts, movies watched, calories, steps, bird species seen etc . As I said in the video, dont start off with a total number of books to read just fall in love with reading but at the same time, challenges are fun and I will continue to do them :)
Bought a book written by a politician called anti trust. Was pretty excited to read it. Worse book I have ever picked up. Everything about it was terrible. Only book I have ever thrown in the trash. Felt good too.
Hahah that made me laugh! It sucks when you're excited by a book and turns out to be rubbish. I once tore a book in half before binning it, it was so bad. That was about 10 years ago now and I am tempted to try it again to see if it really was that bad!
I'm 78 and started reading at 3. You completely nailed it, esp physical (I call them 'real') books. People have always put me down for reading several books at the same time, but each is a different genre and I read what I'm in the mood for that day. Wisdom for Our Worries (paperback), Rocky Mountain Highway (hardback) and Entwined (audio CD). I'd just like to say, that I have never been afraid to DNF. And I have found myself finishing an audio and realizing I would never have finished the book if I'd been reading it. Also, I have a series of audio CDs that are read by the same person who was so great, I kept them and have listened to them again. Thank you backing the, obviously, wisdom of a BB, Millennial. LOL
Thanks for the comment :) One point that I forgot to include in this video was rereading a book. I used to think reading a book again was pretty stupid considering how many books there are to read but last year I read a bunch again and its a great way to keep the habit going and keep it enjoyable. You always get something new from a book the second time through too
I enjoyed it thoroughly ,thank you. Became a better reader, learnt a lot, achieved a hard goal. Pretty pleased with myself. Best of luck with your reading
I have a really low attention span and practically addicted to social media. But I developed and eye condition due to my computer usage and feel like i let myself down because I was the most avid reader when I was in school. What have I become?😢
I'm sorry to hear about your eye condition, that must be really difficult but don't be hard on yourself. I'm sure you could get back to reading slowly. Maybe a reader online or a kindle or something that could be easier on your eyes? Hope you can get back to it! All the best
I read 730 books last year (2 books a day every day for a year). I did it by watching RUclips videos summarizing the books while I had the books in my hand (to make it feel more official). If anyone has any questions just let me know, this year I'm going for 1,460 books!
I guess any reading is good but reading on your phone will still have all the notifications and distractions popping up and will likely slow you down. If you can get a kindle or something I think you'd likely read a lot more
I used to think similar to you, I didnt even want to bend the spine when reading. But books are meant to be read and loved. Bend em, fold em, scribble in em!
Make sure to remember any lies u ever told and to share food with the poor the homeless and never lie reverse all lies ever told very important for soul survival tell elder's to share food with the poor and never lie reverse all lies ever told very important

good job mama! quality over quantity and also, family is important too. im sure you’re doing a great work.

You should read "A series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket
it's a great series!
I read the first one as a youngun but think that's the only one I've read. There's loads in the series right?
❤❤❤❤❤❤
💚😊
You always get something new from a book the second time through too
Science Fiction Category:
Mystic(Book 1 of Mystic Trilogy) by Jason Denzel
I appreciated your comments on reading more. I also made a video about reading more: ruclips.net/video/6h8r32Gfq10/видео.html
Quality, not quantity. Enjoyment, not notches on your bookcases. Comprehension, not speed-reading.
10 pages a day is much better to remember the info.
it'l be different for everyone i guess
I read 730 books last year (2 books a day every day for a year). I did it by watching RUclips videos summarizing the books while I had the books in my hand (to make it feel more official). If anyone has any questions just let me know, this year I'm going for 1,460 books!
😅 best of luck to ya!
Just curious:Do you work or do you read like only short stories? 2 books a day sounds unbelievable
@@weckerschnitzelchen4145 Yeah like there is no way they're reading War and Peace and Moby Dick in the same day lol
So basically you just consume books as fast-food. Without thinking and visualization.
😂😂😂😂😂
Summary: Read.
do the thing
2:50 😂😂😂
😅🙊
What if I have some books on my phone 🧍🏻♀️
I guess any reading is good but reading on your phone will still have all the notifications and distractions popping up and will likely slow you down. If you can get a kindle or something I think you'd likely read a lot more
Quality over quantity. Reading one book every 3 days for a year sounds exhausting.
Definitely better to properly read than to just fly through books (see my point at the end of the video)
FOLD the pages of a book?? You're a monster!!!
I used to think similar to you, I didnt even want to bend the spine when reading. But books are meant to be read and loved. Bend em, fold em, scribble in em!
