Instead of focusing on the number of books read per month/year or the number of pages read in a day/week, I focus on how much time I want to spend reading. So I commit to, say, 15 or 20 min a day. This allows me to relax, adapt my reading pace to the book I'm reading, and just enjoy the process.
I do this as well. I love it. I try to get 2 deep work blocks of reading in a day to try and reach my daily page numbers. Maybe I need to make that explicit next time. Thanks!
I agree with OP. I went from incrementing to reading 30 minutes a day. Things naturally fell into place when I ended up reading 7-8 books in under a few months. When you focus on the process of the habit. The outcomes will naturally fall into place.
For those of you reading this message thinking you couldn't do that, start with a page a day and commit to that for 3 weeks, and then after 3 weeks, gradually increase your page count from there, transition into time frames, then transition into books per month. Yw
This is great. I often go back and forth with audible versions, paper, and kindle so I don’t really have page counts. Kindle pages change if I change the font size, but I have percent completion. Focusing on minutes would work across book types!
I used to be such an avid reader. This social media/youtube/tiktok age has def shortened my attention span for reading. I’m trying this method to get me back on track to more consistent reading.
I agree with you!! I purchased a kindle reader ( better for my eyes/ I can enlarge the font size)and committed to reading again! Currently reading “The Power of Habit”
I am very busy with two jobs, so my strategy is to read 10 pages of 2 books each day (10 in the morning and 10 in the evening). This isn't a lot, but this allows me to read 2, 300-page books per month, 24 in a year, 120 in 5 years. Sometimes, I add in a 3rd book if I can, but I think some people burden themselves by saying "I"m going to read 100 books per year" and they never do. Also, I have stopped choosing my books for the year because my moods and tastes change. I choose them at the beginning of each month. Thanks for your videos!
I love how "messy" your logs are! I feel like so many journaling/reading log tracker videos are all super pretty with lots of effort put into making spreads and such....but that method definitely doesn't work for me. Definitely taking inspiration from your method :) I really like the mindset of "1 pg/day is about 1 book a year...so 2pg/day is 2 books, 3pg/day is 3 books...", I think that helps so much with motivation, because it shows that even a tiny, achievable goal builds up to a great outcome.
I use a monthly calendar and write the pages read in each square, and color code based on book. Goodreads is good for keeping track of books read but not for daily reading, so I use my monthly calendar for that. That motivates me to update the calendar and thus, to read 😊
@@ParkerNotes for me that is just starting out, one book for one month. Daily goal for reading the book is to read 7-10 pages a day. If there are other days where I dont feel like reading much, just a page a day to keep consistent. Then I write those pages down. I dont do the average pages/books to read for year. So I want to make it easy for me just to start the habit.
Last year, I started a goodreads reading challenge, started as 'read 5 books in a year', ended with 23 books read in a year. This habit continued into this year, I think so far I've read 27/30, I'll change the end-goal as soon as I surpass it, adding on 5. But it's helped a lot.
Me too. I love books. And don't get me started on ebooks. Just love holding the book in my hand, physically turning the page and completing the last sentence. Love love love books.
For me personally I cant really read a specific page number each day. Because then I just focus on reading pages instead of reading the book, if you know what I mean. As soon as I start counting how many pages there are left for me, I realize that I dont really soak up the information anymore. How I deal with that, is that I sit down and set a timer for like 40 minutes or an hour and just read. Doing that twice a day gives allows me to easily read a book a week
I love the timer method! I actually use it with the page number log to help me accomplish the daily goals but I can see just using the timer as a stand alone too. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
I just came across this video and whist watching I thought how refreshing to see someone wanting to use pen and paper to log something and not wanting to use a device. Great idea and I’m going to start doing this. I love reading and do so every day, but I think doing this would be an enjoyable thing to keep track of.
I remember when we first met in Mayaguez, before I became a Christian, you were an inspiration to me wanting to read more. Now looking at this, I want to use pocket notebooks and vlog/blog! Keep up the good work, Parker!
For the month of August I've actually been doing a reading challenge and using a method similar to yours. My goal this year was to read 36 books, but as a stay-at-home mom with a toddler, it's been really hard to make time to read and I'm so behind in my goal. So I thought I'd try to read 50 pages minimum every day for the entire month of August, to see if I could make some progress. I set up some rules and rewards to help me get through it and it's been going really well! These are my rules: First, anything goes (fiction, nonfiction, e-books, audiobooks, rereads, etc.) Second, I can't get ahead. If I read 100 pages one day, it won't count toward any future days, I always start at zero each day. Third, I am allowed to catch up. If I miss a day, then I can read extra to make up the day that I missed (but so far I haven't missed a single day!) For my rewards, I set a main goal of completing 21 days. If I complete 21 days, I get to buy a small digital something, like an app, a movie, a discounted e-book, etc. And if I get a 100% perfect month, then I am allowed to buy a physical book! I've already passed 21 daya so I'm planning to buy an app for learning Japanese. I'm just a few days away from having a perfect month, so if I can make it I'll be buying the next book in the series I'm reading. 😊 For recording my progress, I use a blank calendar in my planner. I've mostly been reading just one book at a time, just for the sake of making it easier to track pages. Each day I write the title of the book I'm reading in that day's calendar square. Since I read in short spurts throughout the day (mostly during naptimes) I wait until the end of the day to record my pages. I write the final page I read to under the title, and then I use the previous day's page number to calculate how many pages I read and write it at the top of the calendar square so it's easier to see. If I read 50 pages or more, then I'll use a marker to add a check to the square. It just makes me feel good about my accomplishment lol. All together, it kind of looks like this: +52 Book Title -read to page 102 ✅️ So far with this challenge, I've managed to read 7 books this month and I'm working on an eighth. It's been tough to keep up with but I'm really glad I tried something new. I think going forward I might not read 50 pages every day, but now I know that when I make it a priority and make an effort, I can make reading a daily part of my life. 📚❤
This is awesome!!! Thanks for sharing. I know it's going to be a big encouragement for some of the folks scrolling through the comments. I love the reward system. I need go start encorpoaritng rewards!
Kudos! That is super-disciplined! The only bigger-level reading goal I had was that I could buy 1 new book for every 3 books that I read and finished - and I only accomplished that once! I like how you break that down and adjust for getting ahead. I think that's the kicker - there are always tiny exceptions that lead to fails or over acheiving and then you lose energy to keep it up! Going to try to incorporate something similar... Thanks for sharing!!
Instead of reading how many pages or how much time i spent i just hyper focus and get myself lost in the book’s world , it feels like the book is actually my best friend and telling me a story or a wisdom it really deepens my connection to my hobby
Your video reminds me of an exercise we did at school where we did similar. Write down the title, author, pages read that session like 20-35, a summary of what happened in that section and what we think so far.
I started a Reading Journal with a National Parks Field Notes on 10.14.24. I have read every single day since then. This worked wonderfully for me! Thanks Parker.
I did a reading challenge for this year. It was to read 50 books for the year I've already passed that I'm at 60 now. I also read multiple books at a time . I like this system. I do Goodreads as well but I'm a paper and pen type of woman. So I'll give this try. Thank you for this video. Enjoyed it very much.
I loved this video. I had never thought of setting a daily goal. Since I am a beginner, I will set a goal of 5 pages. Love the idea of a daily log. I’m off to read my 5 pages!
Something that genuinely just helped me read, was getting a kindle. I always have it with me and whenever I have some downtime to myself I just pick it up. I also have a ton of baths so I got the paperwhite kindle (water proof). I went to never reading in my life to finishing 6 books in 4 weeks! I love it, can also get a ton of books for free and read whenever. I have severe adult ADHD so it just helped me get into books, sometimes 5 minutes at a time, upto a couple hours! Bring millions of books with you where ever you want, Ive also gotten into buying books that I love in hard copies just to maybe read down the road in hand. :) Loved this video!
❤ your channel just came up...I've been a reader all my life as I grew up in the 50s and 60s with no tv....at 73, I spend time reading my bible daily and love detective novels as well. My favorite authors are Michael connelly, Dennis lehane, Robert crais, Gregg Illes, John Sanford, oh..and Khaled Hosseini ❤...but I also get distracted by RUclips 😂😂
I'm a philosopher, Christian, avid reader, and huge Dune nerd. This is the first video of yours I've run across, but you had me hooked in the first 40 seconds ;)
I stumbled on your videos today because I'm looking for better systems to write things down and use my phone less. What a gold mine! I subscribed. So many great tips that are practical. I'm going to keep a reading log and my goal is to read just 10 pages a day since my aim is to read a book a month. For me it seems practical and not an overwhelming amount if i have a lot going on one day. I also run a lot and listen to audiobooks. Not going to include this in the reading log of course but it will count towards my yearly books, so it will be a lot more than 12. I'm happy with that.
My goal is 33 pages per day to hit 1,000 pages per month or 12,000 pages a year. I keep a reading notebook with some notes from what I've read or to breakdown what books I want to read and when I want to finish them. To keep myself accountable and make it fun, I'll mark my desk calendar with a symbol if I hit my reading goal that day, something I do for each of my daily disciplines (meditation, gym, 5am wakeup, etc). Great video! Glad to see there are others out there taking a similar approach to reading 😃 📚
I love your method of counting pages. now I just keep a notebook I call my reading journal where I put the name of a book, the author, where I got the book, and how much it cost. then I will give it a star rating. and I also count the books I read. I don't like GoodReads either as I don't understand it like these young people. I plan to try your method today! You are the smartest person on RUclips!
I truly appreciate this video for its detailed and easily understandable teaching approach. The method of using a daily reading log as a note-taking and progress-tracking tool is genuinely helpful. The explanation from top-down to bottom-up provides viewers with flexibility in setting their reading goals. I will definitely try and incorporate this method into my daily reading habit. Thank you, Parker Settekase, for sharing this valuable knowledge!
🇬🇧 Just found your channel and I’ve immediately started my ‘Book a week goal’ note book, as I always want to read more books, so I’ve divided the pages of the amount of pages I should read for 7days. If I read more - bonus! I’m reading my book I received for Christmas whilst in bed with COVID!!! So something positive has come out of this. 📚
Just came across your page, and I like your style: no intro nor outro, no nonsense! I've been meaning to go back to being a regular reader as I used to be as a teenager, so I'm definitely going to try this method! Thanks for the inspiration :)
I’m researching how to make my bullet journal more effective. Definitely loving your content as I plan for 2024. I’ve never done a reading log but I think I shall start one both as a master list of books I want to do and a log as a part of the daily notes section. Gotta get away from relying on my cellphone for everything.
Thank you so for the post! I've been fighting my anxiety of what to read first and how to attain my monthly goal of just one book a month. I thought this would be easy, but instead I would pick up another book that catches my eye. Your lesson is a wonderful way to keep the anxiety and procrastination away. Just like all other goals, we all need a teacher that helps us stay focused and disciplined to succeed! Thanks Teach!
I recently subscribed to this channel because your videos continued to appear upon searching for help better studying and note keeping. I’m a new college student, and I’m looking to maximize my learning experience. I have found several of your videos insightful so I wanted to leave a comment to say thank you. Your effort in creating videos are appreciated. Keep up the great work.
Wow this is fantastic to hear. I think you're already off to a great start based on your search history. Keep searching and learning to practice good study habits and you'll gain some quality success! 👏 great job, keep it up and thank you for the comment! So glad I could help
1) I've had a book bingo card languishing on my fridge for a while and want to finish it up this summer. It's a good way to read books outside my typical genre. 2) I also have an issue with the having of books but not necessarily the reading of them, so I'm going to start donating them after reading and then checking books out of the library. Deadlines are good things. 3) I want to learn things, too (e.g., Excel) and do Lection Divina studies, so this will be a good way to establish the discipline. 4) Thanks for the description on how to keep a log. It is really inspiring that you don't use stamps, rulers, colored pencils, calligraphy, etc. My kind of functional journal.
It is exceptional to be as efficient in reading, writing, editing as well as making your own formal writing or composition. It is to be as able to cite the importance of details and having to decipher contents. Very good for writing.
I've been cutting out social media and being online and focusing on reading when I would be doing those things, for the past few years. I keep a log of books read on Goodreads but I really like your method. I am going to start it today. It also gives me a good excuse to go shopping for a new journal. Thanks.
I used to read a lot of more books but I don’t have a deep feeling about this book .Now I focus on critical thinking after reading a book. It is nice to get knowledge as much as you read
I've started putting the books I want to read this year 'out in the open' like you've suggested in another video, stacking them vertically when I finish reading them. This has really helped read regularly! I can see how this would help too. Thanks!!
I focus on the books I want to read, quality over quantity. When I pick a book I decide, based on how long/complex the book is, how long I want to spend reading it, how busy I am in that period, and I calculate a daily goal, that I log using your method by compiling every day and then by checking the goals met or adjusting it if I have been too pessimistic or optimistic. At the beginning of the log notebook I have an index of books I read and total pages
For me, if you’re reading casually and not for school or work, 2 hours a day. One in the one morning and one in the afternoon/evening. The average pages of a book is 300-400 pages. You can finish a book within 3-5 days. Less that a week guarantee. If you are slower or reading something harder. A week and a few days will do just fine. Just make sure to get those two hours per day in at least.
I recently came across this channel and I'm already in love with it! As somebody who loves philosophy and leads a similar lifestyle to what you put out, these videos are golden! Keep doing what you're doing cause this genre of content needs more quality videos like this!
its really inspirational to see how small your actually read pages are in a day. some days you have 5, some are 14. it makes me feel a lot better as someone who can only handle maybe 4 or 5 pages in a sitting.
Love that idea of writing it down in a reading log. I've used Goodreads but having it written out in a reading journal would be more convenient and help me get more reading done. I'm definitely going to start doing this today. Thanks for the video!
I´ll try your method, maybe I´ll add how much I enjoyed the reading session from one to ten, it´s been really hard for me to read in the last few years, I used to enjoy it a lot. Thanks for sharing your method, greetings from Mexico.
I work 50 hrs a week, so my goal is to read five chapters a day which has worked for me. I get to work an hour early, eat breakfast and read before my shift starts and an hour before I go to bed. On my days off I listen to audiobooks while I do housework, meal prep, or run errands
Nice C.S Lewis collection. :) For a few ears I’ve been using a spreadsheet on my computer…logging just the book/author,date begun and date finished and maybe a one sentence comment why I’m reading the book and/or a sentence of how/why I liked the book. (I got this idea from Doug Wilson in Moscow, ID, pastor/teacher/“blogger” who is a prolific reader) I have found it helps me actually finish more books and keeps me on track (ha, I don’t forget about ones I’ve begun but set aside for a newer interest) ….. this way of tracking pages is interesting and appealing and I’m going to consider it. Thanks!
solid video. I set an Hour aside for reading sometimes I go over but always hit the hour. I keep a commonplace book with my note taking start time and page I started on. But I do like the idea of having an individual log for everything. Pretty nice log though, I like the simplicity. Been enjoying your channeling and insight and knowledge. thanks for sharing.
I agree with you reading is a good tool to developing our knowledge, i read every day a book in three languages to improve my level especially in french and English for about one hour , but i find my pleasure when i read a book with my language (Arabic) .
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:35 📚 The daily reading log is introduced as the best method for developing a daily reading habit. 01:31 📖 Two approaches for setting a daily and yearly reading goal: top-down (based on total books/pages to read in a year) and bottom-up (based on pages per day). 03:09 📊 Bottom-up approach is recommended as it's more adaptable, focusing on daily progress and lifelong reading, enabling progressive overload. 04:20 📅 Daily reading goal is multiplied by 365 to get the yearly goal; yearly goal divided by 300 (average nb of pages per book) to estimate books read. Those two goals (daily/yearly) give an overview of the reading program (to keep the reading routine measurable and the goals easier to reach). Write them at the front of the reading log. 06:05 📓 Using a physical notebook for the reading log: record book titles, start/end page numbers, total pages read for each session. 07:55 📈 Tracking monthly and yearly totals by adding up daily circles into nb of monthly read pages, highlighting for quick reference (only 12 numbers to sum up). 09:53 📚 Preference for analog method (physical notebook) over digital (Goodreads) due to focus and tangible reminder of the goals and habits that one is trying to set. 11:18 🏆 Using a personalized approach with commitment and seriousness helps establish a consistent reading habit. Made with HARPA AI, edited afterwards by me Personal note : very thoughtful video, seeing how your system has held strong since 2015 really shows its effectiveness. I really want to start reading more (especially non-fic), but I also want to remember what I read, and I feel like the digital environment can help decrease friction for the process, but the point you made regarding distractions and the fact that you're restricted by the software limitations stuck. I think I'll try to find ways around that, but if it fails then I know I can always fall back to your strategy as a fail-safe way ! Thanks for the content 👍
I can confirm this idea of having a weekly quota works. I've actually been using it with my physical exercise lol. I have a quota of running 15-18 miles per week. It keeps me aware of how much I want myself to be doing every other day.
Your channel just popped up at the beginning of my You Tube feed yesterday. Thank you for the inspiration! My reading goal is 26 books per year , at present; if I read more, I am pleased. I have taken your page count suggestion, and moved it to my planner. Although I am constantly reading various articles, etc. throughout the day, my difficulty is picking up a book to read daily. I think seeing that pre-dated daily space, waiting for me to record my page count, will compel me to pick up a book, regardless of what else I have read that day, and help me to exceed the 26 book goal I normally set for myself. Fingers crossed!!🤞🤞
I am retired so read quite a bit and watch lectures on line. I have a goal of a minimum number of pages per day. I read a several books at a time, usually around 4 or 5. I put a mag etc bookmark at where I started and the when I leave off put another at the end of the pages I have read. If I start reading more later from the book when I end, I move the second So the first is always where I started and the second where I left off. I total at the day end and move the first marker to the second ones page, so thst tells me next day I have tallied the pages, I have done this for a long time, as I'm 76 and havd kept a journal since I was 12 or 13. The first got lost in a house move, but I have all the rest. I love your videos by the way.
Wow that's so cool that you've been journaling consistently for so long. I like your bookmarking system too. It's always fascinating to hear about other people's systems!
Hello! I am 57, and housebound, so I have a lot of time on my hands. I have loved reading all my life, I love the classics. C. Dickens is one of my favourite authors, but as I have read all his books, ( I wish he had wrote more!). Tolstoy is my favourite russian author. Having read so much, and really not liking modern literature, I was wondering if there are any good authors you could recommend? I am open minded, so even if it's modern, but really good, I would love some suggestions. Thank you for your time. Best wishes for the New Year 🎉
Impressive!! been trying to be a reader, that said i'ts hard.. so definitely will give this a try, thanks so much for sharing and keep u the great work!!
Just find books that interest you, whether they are expository or fiction, then start reading. Maybe try the first dozen or two pages, or the first chapter, and if you still aren't interested, then try another book. You can always come back to that book later. It took me multiple books before I found one that was engaging and enjoyable to read (plus the first chapter was pretty short and I was a lazy reader). After that, I was hooked. Now I have multiple books on the go that I alternate between every other day to keep things interesting if I feel like I'm getting burnt out from one author's work I find difficult to grasp.
After getting radiation treatments earlier this year I havent been able to focus on learning or even reading at all. This seems like a good method to help me build up those capabilities again to where it was and beyond. Going to try and set this up immediately (I have an A6 lined spare lying around that will be used for this) Thanks for putting the right idea in the right spot when I needed to see it.
Thank you. At the moment I am cancerfree and have an experimental treatment to prevent recurrence which so far has had good results in other cases.@@ParkerNotes
One thing that recently works for me: dropping a book that I dont enjoy reading. Doesn’t force you to spend your precious time, and rewards you with more time for that perfect-fit book. Context: works best if you’re on a free library membership or buy/donate from charity shops
My goal is to read 20 minutes a day. That 20 minutes often turns into an hour or more, though. One year I read around 150 books. Will never create a goal to read a certain number of books ever again, because I steered away from massive volumes. Plus, it took the enjoyment of relishing a really good book. Also, Saddleback should partner with you. Found you earlier this week and a Saddleback order is on its way. LOL!
Haha I'm going to screenshot this and tag them in a post!! That point about steering away from big volumes is so true. If you want to read a certain number of books you can always pick short fiction books but that's not really the point. Thanks for reminding me of this point I wish I had included it in the video.
As a single parent and have a job my time is limited but i always make sure i set aside depending how my day goes about 30mins to one hour a day just to read
another book lover here, and I used to read way more during in school and before work gets on more hectic. Since early last year I tried to get on with my read habit and what's better way than to keep a (oh yes) my own reading log. I read for leisure to destress and leisure, lifting my mind totally off from work and numbers. So I started reading novels / fiction from Chinese language and now more and totally back with English. They are e-books and I got them borrowed from libraries and some of them are available on my Kobo ereader, which is really good for long journeys during my holidays and traveling. I don't set my own goals because I can finish a novel of around 500-pages within 2 days the fastest and over a week when I have other priorities. My reading log / tracker is a nice way to count for me how many books I have read and enjoyed. And now I just started my online introductory philosophy course last month (Sep) and I am beginning to wonder should I include non-fiction as well in my reading tracker? Because primarily my reading tracker logs in y favorite reading time only. Hahaha... thanks for your video and sharing. I was browsing for some philosophical stuffs and came across yours. Edit to add: Unlike you keeping track by using notebooks, I am doing them, i.e. my reading tracker and studies notes using onenote. I see my handwriting is getting more terrible and afraid whatever I had written would have me spending more time to read over them in future.
Excited to try this!! My "to-be-read" books on my shelves are starting to outrun the books I've read. This seems like such a simple yet powerful method - tips that usually work with me. I, too, don't like apps and completely agree that it just takes away from the analog time you're trying to clock in with yourself. Subscribed and Liked!!
I’ve been addicted to reading books since my early 20’s! It’s not even a matter of a habit, it’s just my life and what I do at this point! Friends have to rip the books out of my hands to stop me! lol
Storygraph motivates me the most. I track my daily reading (audiobook + physical/digital books) on there. They have graphs depicting my page count and other things. I also have y reading streak on there that I don't wanna break. I really need the gamification and it helps me a lot to set goals on there (pages, minutes listened and books read) and be held accountable for it :)
I use a very peculiar method I created for my own needs. I'm gonna share it here and maybe it will be of use to someone: First of all I do not intend to read a single book. I just want to learn the more I can about whatever I feel inclined to. So I download any interesting books I can possibly find. Secondly, whenever I feel like, I go to my digital (or physical) library and choose one book which fits my momentary interest. Then I try to grasp the content by reading the summary, and what's on the covers. Thirdly, if I get the needed energy to continue, I go on and read the introduction and maybe the chapter (s) I think will epitomise the whole text. And finally, if I really feel a compulsion to, I'll go and read the book cover to cover.
I keep a journal of book titles that I've finished. I note down the author, title, and the date completed. I try to finish a book per week. This year I've fallen behind due to working 60+ hours every week. I'm also studying several foreign languages in order to read them as well. My reading focuses on history primarily; some philosophy, sometimes a literary classic. There's never enough time. A friend of mine, a retired librarian, told me that in his youth he would choose a subject (U.S. Civil War, Ancient Egypt, Russian history, for ex.) and read as much as possible in that area, delving into the most essential and significant studies for three months. Occasionally, he would read a book on a different subject in order to "cleanse the palette." After three months, stop, and on to the next. After many years of doing this, eventually he could pick up any history book or biography and already know the historical context. My own reading habits are far more desultory. I see a nice Great Books of the Western World series on the shelves behind you. 👍 Best wishes on your reading journey!
I like aka Love this idea.. because the internet does get me a little distracted at times.. and besides… I was always a notebook sorta person.. It’s something about pen pencil to paper that does it😊 Hopefully this will help me with my Bible logging ..
I love this challenge. I read a lot, but I'm now focusing on taking notes that are searchable. Evernote is my new best friend. This method you use is excellent, but it only works if you only read paper books. I read equally from paper, ebooks, and audio. Page numbers don't really work for those other formats, so counting books makes more sense, and Goodreads figures the page count for me. Thanks for the encouragement to keep.reading!
I think you can still figure it out from ebooks actually and I wouldn't count audio books as reading, though listening is obviously very beneficial and great, but it's not actually reading. I know lots of people still do count audio books and may be offended, but listening and reading are way different things. Both amazing. Just different.
Great Ideas on note taking and book reading. THank you. I am going to give logging my readings a shot. I too love to read and want to read more each day
I’m ADHD so my reading ebbs & flows. I add 2 books to my goal each year based on how I feel. This year I have nothing to give, so my goal is 9 😅 Past reading: 2018 - 50 2019 - 17 2020 - 8 2021 - 31 2022 - 19 2023 - 27 2024 - 1 so far 😭
What I have learned and have been practicing is Growing up I was Bored to death on reading. Maybe there will be those handful of books that that I will binge reading but there are more books that just lose my attention. What I have been doing lately that has been motivating me to read is to time myself and read a set amount of pages in a book. For me, I can read 20 pages in about 30 minutes and having that mindset on, "Ok if I read this book 20 pages a day and it has about 300 pages thats 15 days. Ill be done with it. And maybe there will be a day were you can read 100 pages like on a lazy Sunday. And its been helping me so far. KEY ADVICE! Put your phone on airplane more or put it in another room. I dont have the issue where I have to see what is new on my phone so Im fine. I like listening to soft music (WITH NO LYRICS) while I read.
I have discovered your channel yesterday and I am really hooked man it's so so good, I have been a writer 😅( in sense always writing on paper anything) since a kid and you telling these tips to write more is such a new thing I never knew a youtube channel existed that can make me feel good and productive about it. I want to thank you for that. ( and I want that mustache tips man love to have one like you )
Thank you for your insights and note taking. As a self-taught artist, and an independent author note taking is necessary. Reading is necessary to learn from those who have the experience and expertise you need to acquire for your own development.
I’m a book lover too! 💕 Your videos are so helpful! Its good to see that there are other people around the world who loves reading too. In these days it feels a bit lonely to be a reader as most people can’t hold their attention for more than 10 min. My reading routine consists in reading during the day the things I have to read, like the subjects from my field related to trauma, in the evening I choose a classic novel, yesterday evening I started reading “the old curiosity shop” from Charles Dickens, it was hard to stop reading it, I found the story so engaging.
I think your approach to reading is good. I would add to it summary of the subject matter you read. That way you have not only the pages read but the content of of what you read. And that would make your journal “invaluable.” Thanks for sharing. You
That's what I do in my Precis notebook and I pull quotes and put quotes into my commonplace book. This one is strictly a log to help me stay on track. I don't want to add too much friction or I won't end up using it as much as I need to

Hey, can you make a video about how to understand difficult history books? I recently finished a book by Yvonne Sherratt [cant say the name as i will likely get shadow banned lol] but its a really good book straight too the point and simple too read but now i'm reading 'history of the vikings' by Gwyn Jones and it's super difficult too understand. I would really appreciate it if you would and remember: "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself." - Albert Einstein Btw love your moustache you're lucky lol
I love your videos! If I may make a suggestion: 9:05 I'd leave a space on the first line, and write the starting page number on the second line. When I'm finished reading, I'd write the starting page number in the (empty) first line. That way, it's easier to make the subtraction. Please keep making more videos, they're awesome!
Hey, thank you! Nice reminder for me to keep reading. I like the method and will start implementing it to keep better track. I have always been trying to set a time to read everyday but keep messing it up.
Reading should not be a matter of quantity. I believe that the pervasive toxic productivity in all areas of our life should not take over intellectual pursuit. Focusing solely on the ‘how’ and ‘how much’ makes us lose sight of the ‘why’ behind our reading: to become a better person, to develop our intelligence to use it for the greater good...etc. Getting lost in the details of the 'how' is in my opinion a distraction and spares us the effort needed to achieve our goals. Nice video
Thisbis the second video of yours I've seen and I love them so far! Like many people with ADHD, I startted out doing poor to average in school while ironically loving to read and learn. Its hard for me to keep up with projects as I get bored of them, but I keep books from college classes and always want to finish them on my own, I am going to try this method, but with a lot less pages at first, I'm lucky if I can finish one page when not in school😂😂😂
This is awesome! Definitely start small and I think you'll grow that ability. I started with 1 page per session and would literally fall asleep on the page and got up to 70 pages for one insane season of life

Thanks!
Here's a video on how I use daily time metrics alongside my page number goals:
ruclips.net/video/rI-e_lkNd8c/видео.html
Same with me. I need to limit my social media timing and get back to reading.
same here man!
Same here Have stopped reading and find it difficult to restart
I'm on summer break so I'm trying to add reading onto my schedule. I mean I keep watching Netflix.😭
I used to be a voracious reader. The internet wrecked that. Even now, I'm looking at a youtube on how to read rather than actually reading!
Same !!! Back in the day i was everyday at the library even if i watch tv it was ok NOW binge watching listening to other stuff instead of reading 😰
@@Jsarmy87124 omg and I thought I was the only one. The technology is kinda affecting us 😂😭
I am very busy with two jobs, so my strategy is to read 10 pages of 2 books each day (10 in the morning and 10 in the evening).
This is exactly right. Everything you've written. This is the right way to do it!!
Exactly! You totally get it. So glad to have like minds here! Thanks.
I like messy journaling tooo
Couldn't agree more! Was like my first thought. I can do a log like that.
YAS!! 100% agree :)
Dude you cracked it! So many years, so many books, so much "I'll start tomorrow". Now I'm reading/studying 80-100 pages a day 🤓💪🍺🍻🍻🍻🍻
I a am from Paris. I am a christian Who love reading theology and philosophy. And I love wresling. Thank you for this Chanel !! God bless you
Amen!! This is awesome. God bless you too!
I read around 80-90 books a year :) it's my favourite hobby.
Amazing
I use a monthly calendar and write the pages read in each square, and color code based on book. Goodreads is good for keeping track of books read but not for daily reading, so I use my monthly calendar for that. That motivates me to update the calendar and thus, to read 😊
For me, its the monthly habit tracker but for books.
How do you know how many pages to put in the month box? And thanks for the comment!
On Storygraph you can easily track daily pages, they've got even a challenge for "Reading Everyday".
Last year, I started a goodreads reading challenge, started as 'read 5 books in a year', ended with 23 books read in a year. This habit continued into this year, I think so far I've read 27/30, I'll change the end-goal as soon as I surpass it, adding on 5. But it's helped a lot.
This is awesome! Good work👏
Me too. I love books. And don't get me started on ebooks. Just love holding the book in my hand, physically turning the page and completing the last sentence. Love love love books.
Yes!! I'm totally with you!!
Thank youuu!!!

If I miss a day, then I can read extra to make up the day that I missed (but so far I haven't missed a single day!)
For my rewards, I set a main goal of completing 21 days. 😊
For recording my progress, I use a blank calendar in my planner. All together, it kind of looks like this:
+52
Book Title
-read to page 102
✅️
So far with this challenge, I've managed to read 7 books this month and I'm working on an eighth.

I couldn’t finished everything you wrote.
Wow this is awesome! Great work!!
I loved this video. I had never thought of setting a daily goal. Since I am a beginner, I will set a goal of 5 pages. Love the idea of a daily log. I’m off to read my 5 pages!
Awesome!! 5 pages is a great start!! Thanks for sharing this 💪
Something that genuinely just helped me read, was getting a kindle.
This is awesome!! Thank you for sharing this with us all. I think most of us here also struggle with getting distracted by RUclips 😅😅
I'm a philosopher, Christian, avid reader, and huge Dune nerd. This is the first video of yours I've run across, but you had me hooked in the first 40 seconds ;)
We are gonna be best friends haha
I’ve had a reading log since January (bc of this video) and I’ve read more this year than any other year. Plus it’s part of my daily life
I stumbled on your videos today because I'm looking for better systems to write things down and use my phone less.
Reading is one of the miracles of life
Amen!!!
Time with you is time we’ll spent! You are a blessing!
🙌🙌

Oh i love this idea! Im gonna start doing this today and make it a goal for 2024!
Yes! Let's go!
Love the technique .. it’s so original n basic… i like the easy logging too.. no devices needed… will take this idea up✌️
🙌🙌🙌
I've been trying to read 52 books a year for the last few years, but I've been struggling. I really like this idea and think it will be a great help 💚
Awesome! I'm so glad! When you focus on becoming a better daily reader you may end up with way more finished books
Quality instead of quantity. It's better to read 10 good books slowly and deeply than trying to rush through 100 books.
I've been cutting out social media and being online and focusing on reading when I would be doing those things, for the past few years. I keep a log of books read on Goodreads but I really like your method. I am going to start it today. It also gives me a good excuse to go shopping for a new journal. Thanks.
I always love shopping for a new journal! Glad to make a convert over from Goodreads lol
I use audio books and listen while I'm cleaning or cooking or driving . This is especially good when you just don't have time to sit and read.
Also, great for those with ADHD and/or dyslexia
I really appreciate your goodness to share with others your own methods of reading. Congratulations
Thanks!!
Yes! I love that it's working for you too! We need reminders
I appreciate this so much. Thank you! Good to have a fellow traveler here!
its really inspirational to see how small your actually read pages are in a day. some days you have 5, some are 14. it makes me feel a lot better as someone who can only handle maybe 4 or 5 pages in a sitting.
Oh I'm so glad you saw those! Yeah ths goal is to average my page number goal. Some days I gotta catch up some days I just can't get em.
Love that idea of writing it down in a reading log. I've used Goodreads but having it written out in a reading journal would be more convenient and help me get more reading done. I'm definitely going to start doing this today. Thanks for the video!
This is a great idea and I’m going to give it a try! Thinking to add every day to my physical planner how much I read each day
Awesome! I hope it helps 🫡
For a few ears I’ve been using a spreadsheet on my computer…logging just the book/author,date begun and date finished and maybe a one sentence comment why I’m reading the book and/or a sentence of how/why I liked the book. (I got this idea from Doug Wilson in Moscow, ID, pastor/teacher/“blogger” who is a prolific reader)
I have found it helps me actually finish more books and keeps me on track (ha, I don’t forget about ones I’ve begun but set aside for a newer interest) ….. this way of tracking pages is interesting and appealing and I’m going to consider it. Thanks!
solid video.
Amen that's great!!
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:35 📚 The daily reading log is introduced as the best method for developing a daily reading habit.

Personal note : very thoughtful video, seeing how your system has held strong since 2015 really shows its effectiveness.
Exactly. Most of my methods are adapted from my time as a college wrestler lol
Parker, your channel excites me when you post!

I love it!! So glad. I really hope is helps you like it's helped me. Thanks for sharing this. I hope you fill us in with how it's going
I love this method because it will help me.focus. I will start it today!
I am retired so read quite a bit and watch lectures on line. I have a goal of a minimum number of pages per day. I read a several books at a time, usually around 4 or 5. I put a mag etc bookmark at where I started and the when I leave off put another at the end of the pages I have read. If I start reading more later from the book when I end, I move the second
So the first is always where I started and the second where I left off.
Best wishes for the New Year 🎉
@@jacquelineteale4937 hello, have you tried Trollope, Hardy, George Eliot or the Brontës? Jane Austen or Turgenev?
@@battybibliophile-Clare Thank you for replying. Yes, I loved them all. Only one I haven't is Trollope. Thank you. Hope you have a blessed New Year.
@@jacquelineteale4937 if you decide to read Trollope, "The Curate" is a good place to start. I hope you have z Good Bew Year too.
I'm so glad! Good luck with your battle! I'm going to pray for you right now.
Thank you. At the moment I am cancerfree and have an experimental treatment to prevent recurrence which so far has had good results in other cases.@@ParkerNotes
❤❤ Rooting for Jacky! Recovering and reading peacefully 😊😊
Subscribed. You're one of the few guys around here who like books. Feels home.
I love that!
Great video. Eager to implement this strategy to help me read more. I also love the physical copies of things. Music, books, movies, etc.
Struggling with making a strong habit out of reading, and I think this might just work if I make myself write it down every day. Thanks.
The daily habit definitely works for me or I forget about it 😅
Excited to try this!!
Friends have to rip the books out of my hands to stop me! lol
🤝🤝 same!!
Thanks, I'll check it out!
I use a very peculiar method I created for my own needs. I'm gonna share it here and maybe it will be of use to someone:
First of all I do not intend to read a single book.
Oh my god yesterday I was thinking for the same idea and I put a daily habit to read and I did read a whole book and I finished it by one day. Thanks
🙌🙌
Starting to read daily. Btw love the Tron disk in the back. It's one of the best movies imo.
I put that in there to find cool people like you!
Best wishes on your reading journey!
I like aka Love this idea.. because the internet does get me a little distracted at times.. and besides… I was always a notebook sorta person.. It’s something about pen pencil to paper that does it😊
Hopefully this will help me with my Bible logging ..
Love it!
This year I have nothing to give, so my goal is 9 😅
Past reading:
2018 - 50
2019 - 17
2020 - 8
2021 - 31
2022 - 19
2023 - 27
2024 - 1 so far 😭
( and I want that mustache tips man love to have one like you )
Haha this is so great! I'm honored to he a small piece of your journey!
I love books too. I love my moleskin notebook journals.
Thank you for your insights and note taking. As a self-taught artist, and an independent author note taking is necessary. Reading is necessary to learn from those who have the experience and expertise you need to acquire for your own development.
Amen!!
I’m a book lover too! 💕
Your videos are so helpful!
I love this!! I'm similar but I pick sci-fi novels for my nightly reading. Thanks for the comment, so good to have you here!
I think your approach to reading is good. I would add to it summary of the subject matter you read. That way you have not only the pages read but the content of of what you read. And that would make your journal “invaluable.”
Thanks for sharing. You
That's what I do in my Precis notebook and I pull quotes and put quotes into my commonplace book. This one is strictly a log to help me stay on track. I don't want to add too much friction or I won't end up using it as much as I need to
I just assign certain time slots to read.
Bus in and home from work
lunch breaks
Good chunk of reading on weekend.
Nice strategy! I also use time slots or blocks. I did a video on that too:

Hey, can you make a video about how to understand difficult history books? I recently finished a book by Yvonne Sherratt [cant say the name as i will likely get shadow banned lol] but its a really good book straight too the point and simple too read but now i'm reading 'history of the vikings' by Gwyn Jones and it's super difficult too understand. I would really appreciate it if you would and remember: "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself." - Albert Einstein
Btw love your moustache you're lucky lol
I love your videos! If I may make a suggestion: 9:05 I'd leave a space on the first line, and write the starting page number on the second line. When I'm finished reading, I'd write the starting page number in the (empty) first line. That way, it's easier to make the subtraction. Please keep making more videos, they're awesome!
That's pretty good! I'll try it out. Thank you! I'm getting so much good feedback in the comments😁

I'm glad you like it. Thank you for your videos, I also get lots of good ideas that I'll implement. :)
I started with 1 page per session and would literally fall asleep on the page and got up to 70 pages for one insane season of life
Nice video brother, I think your method is great and it's has low friction and suits most minds. I'll be using it myself.
Dude! Thank you
