    I've lived here most of my life. The red light running was never anything like this until COVID. People decided during the pandemic that following traffic rules was for chumps and now your head has to be on a swivel at every single intersection regardless of whether you have the green or not.

      I would respectively have to disagree. We moved here in 94' and in the first day, the very first day mind you, we saw 2 different incidents of people completely spacing out and running headlong thru stop signs. So no, Seattle drivers have ALWAYS been terrible! Though, would admit that the speed at which they do it has definitely gotten worse.

      This is either drugs or alcohol. Not that drugs are legal, it's going to happen more and more and there's also insurance fraud. Part of the insurance fraud is work have to pay you while you're "healing". People are abusing the law and we get inflation on our insurance.

If any of those bus riders were in a car at that place and time, the situation would be different. I wouldn't be surprised if many bus riders would cause such tragedies if they were forced to drive. I drive for a living in Seattle and have done so for 22 years. My worst complaint is people don't know how to allow other cars to merge into traffic. They think ONLY of themselves and don't realize we all have to merge at one time or another and it makes the driving universe better for everyone when we use the zipper technique of letting every other car merge in like a zipper does with the staggered rungs when zipping up . My second biggest complaint is cars thinking that crowding my bumper will make me go faster. It is so dangerous in the event I have to slam on my brakes.

      As I replied to a similar comment, speaking as a paramedic in Ontario Canada, that's probably not correct. According to the Ambulance Act that determines the laws where I work, even if we're on an emergency run with lights and sirens, not only are we required to come to a complete stop at every stop sign and red light, but if we're traveling through a red light we must, by law, stop at every single lane of traffic that we're passing through. Of course in practice we never do that unless it's necessary due to oncoming traffic, but if we get in an accident while passing through a red light, it is 100% our fault. I wouldn't be surprised if American laws are similar.

    • @donh6416
      @donh6416 3 дня назад +2

      Wrong. Under Washington law emergency lights and siren allow emergency vehicles to proceed through red traffic lights only after determining it is safe to do so without causing a collision with traffic that has green controls.

    @1:04. If Seattle uses the OPTICOM infrared signal controller system like most major cities, the fire truck was NOT at fault. When the sensor--which is mounted near the signal light--receives an IR signal from the fire truck, ALL lights in the intersection go red.

When there is a delay between the lights changing and a car still blows through a red light after the crossing light has turned green, that means they saw the yellow for some time and said F-it. "The fire engine had the red light."
    In every state/county I have ever lived in, when fire trucks have their sirens on all traffic lights in a 1-2 block radius go red, to stop all traffic flow for the fire trucks. As in a built into the traffic light system fire truck with sirens on would always have red lights, by design.

    • @SeattleTrafficCams
      @SeattleTrafficCams  2 дня назад

      Yeah, we don't seem to have that system in Seattle - they do have the ability to turn the lights green on a few of the roads downtown, so I'm not sure why that didn't happen in this case.

    • @SeattleTrafficCams
      @SeattleTrafficCams  2 дня назад

      There's just a higher camera density down there, and I think more drivers are funneled onto roads that have more cameras. Like, north of the cut, Lake City Way only has a few cameras, and 15th Ave only has a few as well, so it seems like crashes on the south side are more likely to be on traffic cam.

    7 roll overs. Just started living in Seattle as a college student and it's true that Seattle drivers suck significantly more that on the east side like Duvall. But that may just be my impression since they are generally making more stupid driving decisions, but it must at least partially be the fact that the street infrastructure in downtown and other parts of Seattle sucks.

    Idk if it's all the people who have moved here from other states and countries? Or all the gray and clouds distracting them? But since I started having to go towards downtown Seattle for work, I've realized what causes traffic. Some people just can't, and shouldn't be driving AT ALL. When you drive 10 miles per hour or more, and leave huge gaps between vehicles, you're not avoiding anything, or being safer, you're causing problems. Everyone else has to slow down, change lanes to go around.
    Please get a bus pass if you cannot handle doing the speed limit.
