I actually enjoyed watching the wrecker struggle a little in the snow. I live on an island 800 miles from Anchorage Alaska, and the way trucks are set up here are so much different than yours in the desert. I am retiring soon, and I plan to spend a few years exploring Nevada, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico (that's how I found your channel; researching desert setups). Anyway, It's fun to watch you dominate in areas where I'd be scared, and then watch you nervous in areas that are better than my drive to work. I suppose it's all about what a person has experience with. Thank you for the video.

Also, lots of learning stuff from Matt, but a mention of tire pressure would have been nice. Also, "Ten essentials" for snow should include a scraper/brush and snow shovel, and maybe some warm clothing.

This vid shows how hard it is to work in snow. You had plenty of winching power, but the wrecker kept sliding sideways along with the white Dodge. You reset and added the second winch. 12:51 I think it does look good! It's interesting to see how the wrecker moves from it's own perspective. Maybe you should chuck a couple 'Wrecker Cam's' on! Maybe a go-pro forward and rear?
Or even a dashcam setup. It could record a ton of 'establishing shot' type stuff if it's a decent rez/stabilization, and it could be a fun view on things here and there.
Just a suggestion for your arsenal!

I wish Rhett would have thought about that and used it as an opportunity to praise his big brother for being an overcomer! Maybe he will...
Time stands still for 'slow' and 'determined'.
The most truly holy (in the spiritual sense) person I've ever seen was a paraplegic athlete boarding a small regional airliner. I was working as a ramp agent stationed at the bottom of the jetbridge by the aircraft cabin door. My task was to help this 'handicap pax' transfer to an aisle chair so she could be wheeled to her seat on the plane. I instantly became mesmerized when I looked up and made eye contact with her rolling down the jetbridge balanced on the two rear wheels. She was in full control of her descent-rate and steady as a train on a track-- even across the multiple ~3" drop-ramps at the joints of the telescoping bridge sections. (I've seen people trip and fall badly just stepping across these little section-joints on a steep jetbridge.) I managed to keep my composure enough to ask how I could best help her transfer from her wheelchair to the aisle chair. She replied, Just hold your aisle chair steady and then she proceeded to do the most effortless self-transfer! While loading her wheelchair into the aircraft baggage compartment so she could make the trip back up the jetbridge at her destination, I felt like just *her wheel chair* carried more dignity and respect than I did.
Special thanks to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 for making this experience possible. I'm proud to be an American with people like her.

I spent a lot of time driving 4WD's on snowy 4WD trails in the Rockies. The early winter season and late spring driving was the most treacherous because snow and ice are the slickest right around freezing (32° F.) . Getting vehicles unstuck and out on trails like this is actually easier when the temperatures are really cold and the snow is less slick. If it was was -10° F. or colder, this rescue would have been much easier. Easier, but not fun for the guys out in the cold doing the work. I've done it at -30° F. and lower ambient temperatures--you spend a lot of time in the truck warming up.

I spent several years in the oil field from Wasatch to N. Colorado and all of Wyoming. The trucks all had skinny tall tires for getting through the muck. Coldest year was 1978 at -56 below and lots of snow. Our little Blazer would blast through gullies and washouts overflowing with snow, and would track right through it all so we could get to work and back.

    • @carlu-dovica
      @carlu-dovica Месяц назад

I have owned a lot of 4x4's my entire life and it's the older ones that performed the best. Regardless of tires, these newer trucks all have some sort of emission controls and various sensors that can completely shut the truck down just when it is needed the most. It's no wonder they get stuck in a little bit of brush and hardly any snow. They can't even be expected to perform reliably in sand. Utah is very fortunate in not having these restrictions placed on off-road vehicles.

The fact that your kids are referencing Elvis movies and Yukon Cornelius reconfirms everything I already thought I knew about you guys. You guys are great and it's been a long time since I looked forward to watching and keeping up with something, and I work in the industry. I torture my kids with all of the classics myself, it's sometimes tough work, but they come out of it smarter, stronger, and quite frankly more fun to be around. In the winter I keep a small one strap pack in my rig with a warm hat that covers my ears, 2 pairs of gloves and some hand warmers. There is also an emergency blanket, a candle, a lighter, a hunting knife and a bottle of water. Its not that much but I am certain I could live for 2 days with that in some pretty bad conditions. I love watching all of you but it would be a lie to say it doesn't worry me sometimes the places you go without ANY type of survival stuff. Here in the PNW people have died 10 feet from a paved road when things turned bad fast. If I can't keep my pack dry I put everything in a garbage bag then stuff it in the pack. I know if something went wrong we would never see video of it, and I want to keep seeing videos.

As for Rhett’s cold hands I find it helpful to keep the core of your body extra warm allowing the body to circulate more blood to the extremities (feet and hands). Keeping the arms and legs warm also helps so you can use your hands when you need the dexterity of the fingers. Thanks for sharing

They make a vast array of type and styles, if you don't need a lot of dexterity you can get the ones that are thicker and keep your hands warm, if you need a lot of dexterity they make them as well, just your hand get cold a little fast, but they still beat bare hand by far.

I travel from Salt Spring Island British Columbia to Loreto Baja Sur Mexico every winter. It is a pain in the butt but I pack two sets of v bar cam lock chains , bolt cutters , heavy duty chain repair tool, spare v bar crosslinks , master links and cold weather gear . It is a lot of weight and a pain in the butt but when you need it you need it.
Once at my home in Baja it all gets unloaded and I rig up for dessert running . They are definitely two different worlds.
Ironing up the wrecker would be like chaining up a grader . Let the boys do it and Matt can supervise. I am sure a tire chain manufacturer would happily comp him a set or two of chains in exchange for some freebee advertising if Matt is happy with their product. Tire chains would add a level of saftey for snow recoveries on extremely steep grades on the side of a mountain for little investment and training.
To be fair chaining up is never fun but neither is wrecking your finely crafted rig because it slides over the side of the mountain and possibly injuring or killing one of your crew members over a preventable accident.
Be safe and have fun . This is by far the best content on the internet. Matt , his family and team are first class folks.
