I agree,if you break it down,,a new sprinter van about £35,000,then a quarter of a kitchen about £4-5000,then toilet and not the best of comfort or luxury about £3000 so that’s Circa £42,000 but new motor homes 4 berth around £75,000 so where does the other £30,000 come from…

Panel vans are produced as work vehicles for contractors. Designed for working life of three or four years and a hundred thousand miles. Storing them outdoors in rainy, damp UK is not the best treatment for a long life. Buy a van as your daily driver and go camping in the summer. Throw in a Mattress, mains electric cable unit, camping stove, camp kitchen, water containers, cassette toilet, frame tent for outside storage.
Having said that we caravanned with a tourer for decades and enjoyed every moment. Never paid lots of money, bought vans with slight damage or insurance claim history. Check for damp, lift all the upholstery, check under divans into storage lockers, check cupboards and have a good sniff. Invest in a damp meter. Smokers, animals and damp leave aromas you’ll never eradicate.

Considering how much they cost, I see many motor homes spending a lot of time on driveways. You'd have to go on a lot of holidays abroad in one to equal the cost of flights and hotels and a hire car. And that's not taking into account fuel, insurance, maintenance etc.

Don't forget that they are an asset that brings in cash when they are sold.
I would also rather spend my time travelling in my second home than struggling to get to the airport hours before the flight, sitting in uncomfortable lounges buying over priced drinks, breathing recycled air for hours in a cramped seat and then having the transfer to your final destination. And then you have the same unpleasant experience two weeks later coming home.

Just wait for the drop of 20-33%.
All the sellers are holding out for top prices and the brokerage situation in the UK will try to hold prices up as well and the dealer obviously don't want to be stuck holding over priced stock so they will always try to talk the price up.
The key is the falling prices at Auctions - save yourself a bundle and just wait.

I recently sold my Burstner motorhome for exactly £30000. I purchased it 8 years ago for £27500 from a dealer and put 40k miles on it.

I bought a 1970 Thomson Glenalmond fifteen foot caravan in 1973 for £350. Inflation struck in the '70's and I sold it in 1980 for £850. EU added 21% vat to luxury goods and caused the demise of many companies, including Thomson. Lovely vans for the era. And they had proper suspension- coil springs and shock absorbers.

@ironmountainx make sure you spend that 30k quickly. Once you exchange valuable goods for fiat currency you're on a slippery slope. They can print that currency out of thin air. Your Burstner can't be remade cheaply and if you want it back it'll cost you £350k then 30million£ eventually due to inflation and later, hyperinfation. It happened to the Germans in the 1930's. It's happening again

The problem being that a lot of other folk think the same thing and has pushed the price of good used vans up also. Fitted out my own camper (which I no longer have) over 14 yrs ago and had many years of great holidays in it. (The van was a Ford Transit minibus bought for £6500 and kitted out with 3 way fridge, toilet and 3 burner hob for £2000) It isn’t as hard as you may think to fit out so long as you have some space to do the work and some hand skills. I am going to do it again and will be keeping it very simple and as bare as possible so I have a usable van when not camping. One thing I will advise on is insulation. It makes an incredible difference in both heat retention and noise reduction. I never had heating in my van at first. I did end up fitting a small custom wood burner for winter use which worked really well.

The continental manufactured motorhomes tend to have smaller kitchen areas because generally speaking the weather is more favourable on the continent and they tend to eat al fresco which is why the continental vans & motorhomes always almost tend to have outside barbeque points & no internal oven except for the UK market. One thing I have noticed is the 6 - 6.5 metre compact motorhomes are so popular that the prices new for this category are higher than the 7 metre motorhomes. The Pilote 626D & Burstner Harmony line TD 590 are two examples where the prices have rocketed! Very interesting vlog Jason and Kev. Happy new year to you! Ok

My friend, who happens to be a motorhome dealer, has informed me that they are currently facing difficulties in selling their vans. In fact, he knows of dealers who have gone out of business because they are unable to lower the prices and are still waiting for a significant sale. I recently visited a dealer in Dundee who mentioned that the prices have not yet decreased. Interestingly, he had 30 motorhomes two months ago and still has 29 of the exact same ones. I suggest conducting an experiment by attempting to sell your vans to the dealer. You will likely receive a disappointingly low offer, which will make you realize that the situation is not as positive as it may seem.

I waned a vehicle that could be used as our primary vehicle therefore allowing us to sell, certainly my car, but possibly the wife's as well. I want a vehicle under 2m to avoid those pesky height barriers and still good enough to do the weekly shop. My only worry is that the government will make it harder and harder for the peasants to stay on the road......

Yeah that 2m height is a critical step. Go beyond that and you can't really use the camper as your only vehicle. Our van has been our only car since about 1998. Given the slow progress on e-vans we are seriously considering getting an electric car and a taller van for 'far end of Europe' type trips. We're going to try a pop-top first and see how that goes.

Yes, we are back in the market for a “New-2-Us” Motorhome or Campervan. Possibly not new this time and possibly a bit smaller than 7.5m, perhaps even a panel van type.
Sadly our beautiful 2015 Chausson 728eb, which we owned since new, and only had 43,000 miles, has been sent to the salvage people by the Insurance for onward sale or breaking. This was after an incident on the M6 in September where of some road debris caused the driver rear tyre tread and debris to come through the multiple layers of flooring, with a bang, knocking the loo for 6 too!
I thought the toilet or fridge had exploded.
It was repairable, but not all original parts were available and could take a further 3-6 months to order, receive and repair.
The insurance didn’t want to get involved with a repair that was not 100% back to the original so took the decision to salvage it.
Hopefully some enthusiast gets a good chance of buying and repairing it as the engine and rest of van was in excellent condition.
I enjoy your reviews and information so we’ll keep an eye out on your stock list and come pay you a visit when the time is right.

Mmm might be hard downsizing, but we’ll have to give it a try.

When you look at for instance what the work VW campers at that price have had done, it can fill over a page in maintenance repairs. As others oh here say, you have to justify these prices, by something like the use as a daily work vehicle or use them a good few times to get away or something and not just leave them on your driveway.

The prices are crazy... I know people have been saying it for a year or two now, but they surely have to crash soon?
At some point, surely people are going to wake up to the fact that you could spend 50 nights a year in mid tier hotels for the next ten years for less than the price of a motorhome?
I know some will say "But you get some money back at the end" which is true. However, after ten years, the value has dropped a lot. Not only that, but unless you've got 50k in cash to just drop on a van, you're also paying up to tens of thousands on top in interest for your finance agreement. So a good chunk of the money you get back at the end will only be the interest you've paid on top.
I love the idea, but the market right now is insane... My only hope of enjoying this hobby is converting a used van myself.

People will say that they are overpriced but base vehicle prices have rocketed in the last few year. They will also say that they can get cheaper privately but you get peace of mind if you buy from a deal who inspects, repairs and services the vehicles before sale.

Most expensive the year was a couple in a £265,000 vehicle (but they live in it full time) down to one of them Roma vans (you did a video on it) which I thought was just great. I wonder if as one of the subscribers mentioned, how ofter are vans used compared to the cost of just going abroad on a plane for holidays. Some of the overnight parking charges from what I hear are £30-£70 a night or more. It's not a cheap weekend away and it's left on your drive for the rest of the week. I wonder if you could do a video on that; a comparison sort of thing.

You get the freedom to go where you want. However they are expensive to run and store and you could have a family holiday just on servicing and storage costs a year. Thats without any Diesel or campsite costs!

There was a surge in demand for motorhomes during the pandemic due to forced staycations. The people who bought them are yet to accept their true market value in resale. But there will come a point where resellers realise that its better to take a loss now rather than wait several years for depreciation to do the same thing.

    • @TheMotorhomeMan
      @TheMotorhomeMan  6 месяцев назад +2

There's also a good chance there will be stuff wrong & needs fixing, that's the risk when you take when buying privately. Also our prices we buy and sell stuff for are relative to the market meaning we are paying more for vans than what we were a few years ago. A combination of high inflation and large demand for leisure vehicles has led us to where prices are now. Hope this helps!

@@TheMotorhomeMan Thanks for your honesty.. I think you are actually right especially when you add the 20% VAT. Private Vs Trade is always going to be the challenge. I can't believe how much Motorhomes have rocketed .. wish I had purchased one 5 years a go at 35k brand new!!!!!! I will stick with my reliable caravan.. she's a little beauty. Purchased her brand new tens years ago. Hopefully she will see me right on my retirement adventures in 10-15 years time.. if this government does not leech us dry!

Why would a used vehicle dealer suggest that there is still some fat in used prices? Not sure the 'laddish' presentation gives much confidence either.
The truth is pitch fees are choking the market for caravans and campers. As a static owner on a site with touring provision, 60% occupancy happens once a blue moon!

Errrrmmm I think these are priced in the dead zone.. I mean think about it... The rich folk are definitely not going to be buying second hand motor homes.. They would rather fly abroad 🤷‍♂️ then there is the middle class folk that probably haven't got that kind of money laying around spare with the price of everything going up aswell as ulez tapping into there account on a regular basis and the price of insurance fuel and tax being so high also... Then you got the lower class earning under 20k per year paying extortionate rates for rent and bills and just about keep a roof over there heads 🤔 so yeah.. Might get the odd oap that's retired but I personally can't see a massive market for it 😂 maybe I'm wrong but.. I think even if I was just retiree I would rather build my own "give myself something to do" than pay that amount of money 😂
