- Today we look at a head to head comparison of 5 different 9 pellet buckshot loads. The purpose of this video is to demonstrate the pattern/ spread performance of each load and determine the maximum safe/effective range out of a typical 12 gauge 18.5 home defense shotgun.
Magpul SGA stock for the Mossberg 500/590/maverick 88
amzn.to/3PLLCtv
Loads in order of appearance-
Winchester Super X 00 9pellet Buck 1325fps.
Federal Power Shok 00 9 pellet Buck 1350fps.
Fiocchi Defense Dynamics 00 9 pellet Buck 1250fps.
Winchester Defender 00 9 pellet copper plated Buck 1145fps
Federal Flitecontrol 00 9 pellet copper plated Buck 1145fps.
Super X performed fine. The entire paper you have your circle drawn on is half your body width, all 9 pellets stayed in the paper!
Perfectly acceptable accuracy for defense purposes!
I’m a firm believer of patterning (an sighting in) a shotgun for whatever load you plan on using. Every load doesn’t have the same POI with the same shotgun. Whatever you decide to use, know your POI for it and adjust accordingly. Thank you for the good information.
Subbed, perfect demonstration of the diff 12g ammo, exactly what I was looking for
I'm glad to hear it, welcome!
Great video thanks for your videos I love them! Just subscribed! Stay safe brother and God bless you!
Nice. Just got a 250rd case of flitecontrol. It’s the go-to
Fiochi was not too shabby!
I just scored a pack of Flitecontrol 8 pellet low recoil LE tactical.
I'll be doing a follow-up to test head to head with the 9 Pellet flitecontrol. I hope to see it get me to 25-30yds.
I just wanna solve the 9th pellet flier phenomenon
@@MichelleObamaIsPackinASack yeah, that would be a breakthrough. The 8 pellet load is awesome, but hard to find, last I looked.
Nice demonstration. I waited until the end to see if he was ever going to adjust his aim lower but it never happened.
Fiocchi is a winner in my pocketbook.
I plink with other brands of shells, but I’m conservative with my Fed Flitecontrol for Home Defense loads. Right now I plink with Fed #2 Steel Power Shock, which kicks like a mule.
as for my situation, in my house a 25 foot shot is the longest that I've got. in my mossberg 590a1 I've found that #4 buck gives the best pattern...I prefer federal 2-3/4
The Fiocchi actual performed almost as good as the flite control considering the POI versus POA diff that could have been adjusted on your red dot.
And the Fiocchi has more fps and would hit harder.
Then ya throw in it cost 20 bucks for a box of 25 fiocchi versus 10 bucks a box ( if you can find it at that price ) for a box of 5 Flite control LE.
Just saying.....
I will be picking up some Fiocchi at midsouth for 19.99 a bx of 25.
The Fiocchi is probably the best choice for home defense. In my particular circumstances, I'm looking for maximum effective/ ethical range. After making this video, I was able to get ahold of some LE 8 pellet Flitecontrol. Which I was able to get 9" patterns with, at 35 yards. My 590 is now loaded with the 8 pellet, which I made another video on here-. ruclips.net/video/yAiwRcQLQ5Y/видео.html
Fiocchi Defense Dynamics is definitely good to go, for most defensive purposes. Being able to afford to train with your carry ammo is a big plus.
Fiocchi is $0.50/rd on PSA website (oct 2023)
Awesome video. For a future one just for fun try out a .680 choke in a 12 gauge with the flitecontrol. 50+ yard load. I load my own shells and can shoot way past 65 yards effectively with certain wads. We load and shoot all gauges on my channel even 24 and 32.
Unfortunately I don't have a shotgun with a choke.
I've considered grabbing one of the 500 magnum turkey models next time they are on sale and making into a defensive shotgun.
I don't know anything about hand loading..... After this video, I did one on the 8pellet LE Flitecontrol which I was about to get VERY good patterns out to 35yds with.
I think this shotgun is going to be sent Vangcomp sooner or later, for a barrel job.
There's nothing wrong with the Winchester pattern. My shotgun is for home defense and 99% of shots in my house would be within 5 yards. If I'm outside, I'm grabbing the .300 Blackout and not limiting my range to 40 yards with a shotgun.
Ok why though? You could have a shotgun that will be easily effective out to 40 yards, and has less of a chance of sending off a flyer that kills the kid or something
When I saw you're from Texas, I knew it could be better than the ones from New Hampshire I sat through, or the one from New Jersey with the guy at a range with people from the hood in the background looking down the barrel of a loaded Keltec while his buddy tries to chamber a round with his finger inside the trigger guard. I was right, you have a useful video, thanks for creating and posting it here. I just bought a new Benelli and wanted to become more current on the newest shotshells. I'm your neighbor over here in Missouri.
the Federal Flite Control 00Buck _8 pellet_ has the best grouping.
Indeed it does. I have another video where I get really good groups at 35yds with it.
@@prudentcitizentraining , oh...cool. ill look for it. thanks.
@@prudentcitizentraining , i just watched it... im pres sive. no place to leave comment on that vid, so i put it here
Flight control is hard to find because they are contracted to supply PD’s & SO’s
lucky gunner has some
i either buy cheap basic buckshot (for range fun ) or Federal flight control for literally everything else . got a good bunch of 9 pellet at 1325 and 9 pellet low recoil at 1150.
best round on the market
Walmart loads approximately 0% of ammunition.
Great Great video
Thanks for watching man!
It's SO easy to make your own buckshot, I can't imagine anyone buying it who shoots regularly. I make rounds that perform at better than factory standards for .30 or 40 cents each.
I don't have the space or time to devote to hand loading. I probably would if I did, at least for range work. But my defensive loads will always be from a reputable manufacturer.
Several years ago the Federal Government tested various shotgun loads to determine the "best" load for self defense purposes for Federal agencies to use. Their conclusion, if you think they knew what they were doing, was that in all the various conditions a shotgun could be used in an armed incident was to use a 27-pellet, #4 nickel-plated buckshot at 1325fps. load. Fiocchi makes this exact loading in 10-round boxes if you'd like to get some for use. I've had that load in my SD shotty for a long time. Luckily I've never needed to test its effectiveness, but I feel confident it would easily do the job.
I may have missed it, but does your shotgun have any choke? Even if, that superx was sub par, and I just bought 15 rounds of 2 3/4 superx 9 pellet 00 buck. Good vid and some money spent on it. Semper Fi……Yut!
8 pellet Flite Control ftw! I probably shouldn't say that out loud, it's hard enough to find without more competition. :)
I'm afraid to tell anyone about it. This stuff isn't easy to find!
Follow up video with the 8 pellet shows significantly increased capability!

Just found 8 pellet flite control for .80/shell woohoo‼️ best long distance buckshot available.
@@MB-jg4tr where at?!
@@prudentcitizentraining all gone already
Beautiful landscape where u r shooting:) Any fish in that pond? lol. seriously, looks like a sportsman's paradise. Btw, you're talking "home defense" here right? Testing at up to 20 yards? Jeez, how long are your hallways? LOL..
Lastly, I carried a 590 mil version back in the VN days, shooting 00 buck was darned effective in the boonies. As for accuracy, well we used to talk "minute of Pie Plate" ;)
My backyard, in North Texas. Your ammo choice is very situationally dependent. For home defense in a residential area, patterning isn't that critical. However if you live on a larger property, you could easily have a 50 yard shot to your mail box. Let's call that "property defense". In my case, I live on a larger property AND carry a shotgun for work. So I ask more of my equipment capability. I've since moved on to Federal Flitecontrol 8 pellet, which gives me a one "minute of pie plate" group at 35 yards.
@@prudentcitizentraining :) I gotcha, I live on my own mountain in N/W Arkansas. Pretty much a 'clik' down the mountain, cross the stream, then the main gate :) Looks like we got a bit of the same concerns and appreciation for natural surroundings:)
Federal LE low recoil 8P, hard to find though.
Yes, you are correct on both accounts.
Hey thanks - your sights are off &
It’s very windy !
Do you running a choke during this test ?
My shotgun isn't setup for chokes. Smooth bore all the way.
Been wondering about the Defender.
It seems good to go for home defense. But it definitely disappointed me when we got to longer than living room distance. Definitely not a close competitor to Federal Flitecontrol.
@@prudentcitizentraining And since it’s not cheap, for the same price I’m tempted to stick with Hornady Critical Defense or Federal.
@@josh656 You can definitely do much better for the price. I haven't gotten my hands on any Critical Defense yet. I just shot some 8 pellet flitecontrol today and holy crap it's GOOOOOOD. Shot out to 35 yds from my smooth bore, no issue!
The "drift" of the shot seems to match the wind... 🤷♂️
Walmart PoweShok surprised me!!!
Same, it's not bad in a pinch at all...
Camera is too far away from the target to see the impacts. Also, Winchester and Federal buckshot is buffered (even the cheap loads). And the average spread of buckshot is 1" per yard, so the winchester you didn't seem to like actually preformed much better than par.
Federal flight control is good to 50yrds with my 590a1, all those others ones will do the job aiming center mass still not gonna be a good day for the reciver
I've heard that the A1 is more accurate, due to the heavier barrel. I plan to send my barrel to Vangcomp, for an upgrade. I'm hoping that will take my 8 pellet FFC out to 50, while keeping all pellets in the body. My primary concern, to mitigate errant pellets flying off into the wild.
Is that with a 20 inch barrel 590a1or 18.5 inch i have both
All your shots seemed high. If you aimed lower, there would’ve been more in the circle
so its safe to say that with most ammo you need to aim but with Winchester super x..... your safe with "the general direction"
can someone explain to me why super X is bad for home defense? and im talking like im in the corner of my room waiting for my door to bust open.... so like 15 feet max...... not gonna lie... I want my shit to spread personally .... unless that's not good for stopping a threat..... let me know please
Howdy - Police administrators tend to desire a tight pattern to lesson the chance of bystanders being hit by stray pellets. But, the purpose of a shotgun is the benefit of spreading projectiles to increase hit probability. If one wants a tight pattern, then they should choose a rifled slug. It doesn't get any tighter than that. 😉
or for someone at 45 - 50 yards on your property with buddies coming with him lol and you dont have to change out your round . anything past 60 you might as well be using your ar
i want as much spread as i can get with buckshot, improves the chances of hitting vitals. that's the purpose of a shotgun, if you want bottle cap tight patterns you might as well use a slug
The purpose of chasing a tight pattern, is to ensure accountability for every projectile that leaves the muzzle. Any pellet that misses the target, is a liability. This comparison was mostly focused on distances longer than your living room. For use strictly inside the home, any of these will probably work out fine.
Tell me you want to go to prison without telling me you want to go to prison.
@@adamp.2517don't know if you know but buckshot will go through you too and you can still have a liability
Complaining about an over 8” spread at 15 yards? How big is your house?????
I see that you hold your ammo to a really high standard and I’m not sure how big your house/property is that you want buckshot to group inside a 8in circle past 10yd. Most shots wouldn’t be taken past 10yd. But why is it that you go off of 8in circles and not a human silhouette? That would be a little more realistic in my opinion.
Humanoid targets would definitely be entertaining and perhaps a better visual aid.
The 8" circle represents the vital zone of an average adult male's upper thoracic cavity.
The property I'm on is fairly big, 40 yards to the mailbox. The shotgun is also a tool for work.
For use strictly inside the home, tight patterning isn't that big of a concern.
For anyone looking for flitecontrol which can be a bitch to find, the Hornady Critical Defense/Black performs very similarly although the Hornady is not a reduced recoil load like Federal.
Seems that Flite Control simply mimics a fully-choked bore in non-choked barrels.
Doubtful that any buck round (except FC) will hold unreasonable pattern diameters at distances beyond, say, 10-yards, in shotguns without chokes.
If one cannot tolerate as much as a 20-inch group at 10-yards (30 foot) from short, cylinder bore barrels...don't use non-FC buckshot.
Use a choke-able barreled shotgun, slug, or different firearm.
JMO.
A 20" group at 10 yards is absolutely fucking unacceptable. That would be throwing pellets off target at a reasonable HD distance. If you have a group that size at 10 either your ammo sucks and/or your barrel sucks. My Supernova didn't pattern that badly with even the cheapest dogshit buckshot. Either you're talking out of your ass or your guns are shit.
Why doesn't anyone compare Fetter 12-gauge 00buck on these channels. Russian made but a really good ammo for tje money
Uhh. 2:21… if that’s the box, that’s not flite control…..
Adjust your red dot. The gun is shooting high at close range. It gets worse as you go back.
Dude! Like watching a Japanese monster movie.
