The “liability” balls seem more like insurance rounds, especially in a home defense scenario. It seems unlikely you would have the opportunity to setup the perfect aim in that case so if you’re aiming in the general direction those extra pellets can definitely come through!
@@MarcusGW1028 why would you take the shot if you have a chance at hitting someone else? A slug would over-penetrate and still risk "going in the other room"
I think the intention of this round is for home defense application, and the pellets are there in case your slug isn't right on target. Meaning if you were to barely miss with the slug then hopefully a 00 pellet would impact. I would use these as an escalation lol 00 buck first, then pdx, last slug lol alternating. At any rate seems like it couldn't hurt in the proper situation, thanks guys for showing these.
If u hit the attacker at 10 yards and the slug hits his flank the buck might get him somewhere vital. But in that case you are probably better off with just 00 buck or #4 buck

Everyone Loves that stuff. Don't we want the buckshot to spread open.. covering more area? I have never seen any for sale anywhere, ever. It's like a Unicorn. If our goal was a tight group, shouldn't we be using an AK? We can all agree, whatever your system is... PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.
I just did an internet check. Midway sells a box, 10 rounds of these PDX1 12ga. Defender Rounds for $19.99. When you said the price that you did I had to check some current pricing because I bought 1/2 a case back in 2015 for home deference. Lucky me I still have it and thought I was sitting on a small fortune. Thank you for providing us with the good videos that you create. Also, i see this isn't as lethal as I thought they would be, time to go shooting with some of these
The intent of the "liability balls" is to sell ammunition. The blacked out box and shell coloring helps with sales also. Something that really isn't a problem right now.
I'd really love to see buckshot with birdshot filling the empty spaces. Should be a good defensive load with the extra weight from the birdshot taking some of the heat off the buck while filling in the pattern a bit more.
I like the Defender ammo, after my own extensive testing,,, about 30 rounds anyway. Another great option to 00 Buckshot or standard 1 ounce slugs,,, Try #1 Buckshot, if you can still find any. It accomplishes what you are talking about.

The high speed camera work was exceptional on this one! OG had some great shooting! I’ve bought severa gimmicky rounds over the years. Cabelas “Herters” brand had double ball with like 2 go cal balls, some with one large ball and some buck shot... I bought it because it used to be like $6 for 10 rounds.
In intense combat situations it is higly possible that you may miss slightly with your buckshot and that turns your liability balls into guarantor balls. And the average home owner defending there home likely don't shoot or even carry every day and arent as sharp as you and can use the extra shots as they may be the difference between life and death. Outstanding as usual👌
I carried this stuff when working in the arctic. I wasn’t hunting anything, but a hungry polar bear would hunt me. My philosophy was maximum impact over a larger area to dissuade the big white fuzzy wuzzy from continuing towards me. And I certainly didn’t care about over penetration out on the tundra. 😉
Buck and ball has been around for a long time. I imagine it might be most effective in a massed-troops Napoleanic-type conflict with smooth bores. Seems like it was a favorite on the frontier, as well.
It will never dispel the myth. Just read the comment section and you will see all of the clowns who want a truck sized group so that they can hopefully hit the bad guy with at least one pellet while destroying their entire living room.
It's more the difference between hitting someone and missing the vitals or hitting someone with enough of a spread that there's no way you missed something vital.
Just a modern version of the "Buck & Ball" loading from the old 0.69 cal "Muskettoons" that were issued to US Dragoons prior to the US Civil War (19th Century). There is a "PDX" configuration also for .410 shotguns. The .410 "PDX" was apparently developed for the .45/410 Bond Arms derringers which are apparently illegal in California.
I can tell you from first hand experience these things work great for their intended purpose. I loaded them into my bedside home defense shotgun months ago and since then I've had zero home invasions!
VERY nice consistency displayed with the slugs. Shame the 3 buckshot were spread so far apart. Makes me want to go target shooting though as usual when I watch this channel
Hey TFM just wanted to say that I like and appreciate the the camera work, it's cool you perfected a way of tracking the projectile. @7:21 I believe you mislabeled the military buck as flite control
It's interesting to see the .410 comments. This is what I try to buy for the wife's .410 mossberg, and they always pattern great. Definitely the preferred round after some casual testing. I've never tried them in a 12 gauge though, bc 00 always patterned just fine from our smooth bore. I'd like to see these guys do this comparison in .410...with the cost of shells now, I don't play with shotguns on the range much anymore...
This PDX Shotgun Round reminds me of the old Civil War Buck & Ball Load. They would use that in older smooth bore muskets at close range. From what I've read, they found out that it had some effectiveness at close range. But at that time they were using large smooth bore muskets, .60 to .80 caliber, the Large Ball and the Buck was pure lead and the Buckshot would have been larger and a bit heavier then what was in this PDX Round. With those Civil War rounds, there was a chance at between 5 and 15 yards another Soldier might get a serious wound or killed. Still, even back then they found the use of Buck & Ball was not as effective as either the single Ball or a good load of shot in a smooth bore. Nice to see that the 2.0 version of the Buck & Ball hasn't changed much in all this time. However, I thought a more effective round would be copper tubes the diameter of #3 Buckshot (.25) or F Steel Shot (.22) with the length of the slug that fits into a 12 gauge cartridge. The tip of that tube would be filled with the size of the shot. So for example, #3 diameter of the tube would be .250, the length would be between .500 and .750, with the first .250 of that tube being solid. These would resemble a small Mini Ball. You would be able to fit about 5 of these in a 12 gauge shell all weighing slightly more than 23 grains each. Since they would resemble a mini ball or a slightly longer mini ball with a hollow base, they should be quite accurate and hit with the same force or more of the #3 Buckshot depending on the loaded muzzle velocity. The same type of small buffer pellets could be used to stop distortion. With the size of the F Steel Shot (.22) you could fit about 8 in the shell at 16 grains each. If using 00 Buck size of .330 you would be able to fit the same number of 3, except they would weigh close to a .223/5.56 Bullet at 54 grains each. Something like these could be made out of solid copper rod, or cast from a mold, or made from copper tubing pressing or soldering a copper or lead pellet into one end.I had a friend that tried that some years ago, only he used .22LR that had bad rim priming. He carefully cut the cartridges removing the rim portion. As I remember he was able to load 5 into a shot shell. We were about 17 back then and he would reload some of his shotgun shells with some experimental stuff that could be close to dangerous. Some items worked real good like the old triblade arrow head he cut down to fit in the shot shell, or the time he used small nuts to use as shot, or the .22 rounds. Jeff and him would get along real good.
I think the idea is that you could miss with the slug but still possibly hit with something with the buck. Decent penetration with a spread sounds like a good idea to me.
We used the military buckshot after receiving the benelli M2 in 2008. I carried as an extra. Opening doors and room entry. It made a mess for sure. We got the M4 two weeks later and I loved it.
I shot a lot of these Winchester Defender rounds when they first were on shelves. They ALWAYS pattern the 3 buckshot in a perfect triangle around the slug.
Those rounds reminded me of that one pistol bullet that split into 3 or 4 parts held together with strings (kevlar maybe if I recall) that I saw in TV many years ago, some type of home defense rounds were very expensive, not sure if you've gotten chance to test them but it would be interesting to hear your thoughts about those kinds of rounds, if you get the chance to have them that is.
These shells are like "buck and ball" loads used up to about the Civil War in smoothbores. Because everything downrange is considered uniformly hostile, the flyers will hit other enemy soldiers. This sort of load was used when soldiers would advance in ranks like the British did during the Revolutionary War.

The “liability” balls seem more like insurance rounds, especially in a home defense scenario. It seems unlikely you would have the opportunity to setup the perfect aim in that case so if you’re aiming in the general direction those extra pellets can definitely come through!
Or they would miss and hit whoever in the other room
@@MarcusGW1028 I guess if you live alone, it’s pretty good then?
Why not just use buckshot to have more insurance? Think I'll just interchange the rounds. First two rounds buckshot the next shot a slug.
@@MarcusGW1028 why would you take the shot if you have a chance at hitting someone else? A slug would over-penetrate and still risk "going in the other room"
@@seanjokela isn’t the Winchester defense slug segmented to fragment into 3 pieces?
I think the intention of this round is for home defense application, and the pellets are there in case your slug isn't right on target. Meaning if you were to barely miss with the slug then hopefully a 00 pellet would impact. I would use these as an escalation lol 00 buck first, then pdx, last slug lol alternating. At any rate seems like it couldn't hurt in the proper situation, thanks guys for showing these.
So adding to the rounds going through the kids room.
That makes no sense
If u hit the attacker at 10 yards and the slug hits his flank the buck might get him somewhere vital. But in that case you are probably better off with just 00 buck or #4 buck
@Darthdoodoo probably lol and even at 10 yards buckshot doesn't have a big spread 🤷
"Looks line a bunny!" That's why Elmer Fudd always used buckshot.
Wabbit season!
My guess ; "if you hit, you'll hit hard, but if you miss in panic shot, you'll still may hit something"
Why not just use normal buckshot or flight-control buckshot then? Why throw the slug in there to complicate matters if you DO miss a panic shot?

I get a little sad when I think about how clear the mountains were as a child in the valley... Madera 1974
I lived in Madera . Loved going up to shaver lake area and fishing dinky creek and tons of other rivers up there
Is that where these guys are ?
That's interesting, because in the '70s you often couldn't see the Sierra Madres from LA because of all the smog, but now you can (unless it's cloudy).
Ok, ok wait a minute.....are you telling me that this is filmed in madera???
Modesto, 1950s. You could see Yosemite and the high Sierra. Sometimes in these videos you can still see snow-capped peaks in the distance.
Those oh-so familiar river bottoms they shoot in, too, make me homesick with memories of a beagle and a .22.

We call that, Uncle Stapler, because it hasn't worked for years, but it doesn't bother anybody, so we haven't got rid of it.
This round was designed to confuse forensic firearms examiners. "There must have been two shooters".
Brilliant
Grissom would have figured it.
I'd really love to see buckshot with birdshot filling the empty spaces. Should be a good defensive load with the extra weight from the birdshot taking some of the heat off the buck while filling in the pattern a bit more.
Steel birdshot at that!
Look at 3” turkey loads. Some are even blended, containing #5, #6, and #7 shot in one shell
I like the Defender ammo, after my own extensive testing,,, about 30 rounds anyway. Another great option to 00 Buckshot or standard 1 ounce slugs,,, Try #1 Buckshot, if you can still find any. It accomplishes what you are talking about.
@@judgementgaming3270 I had some #4/#5/#6 mixed 3” shells.

buck and ball
14:45 that is a 1950's Hollywood worthy ricochet sound!
Sounds like a cat.
I have some in my Governor. The 410s have discs and BBs. My nightstand gun with a laser grip. Another great video! Endless seemingly. 🤠
You should try the 2 liter bottles with the blast caps(purchased at Wally World) and colored powder. Bottles explode and color flies.
Good idea. I'll call them powder puffs.

He summed that up perfectly. It's like shooting a slug with 3 liability rounds behind it.
good choice, i would take theses over a 30-06 or even 300 win mag bolt gun
Buck and ball has been around for a long time. I imagine it might be most effective in a massed-troops Napoleanic-type conflict with smooth bores. Seems like it was a favorite on the frontier, as well.
I hope this dispels the myth for everyone that you don't have to aim a shotgun.
It will never dispel the myth. Just read the comment section and you will see all of the clowns who want a truck sized group so that they can hopefully hit the bad guy with at least one pellet while destroying their entire living room.
@@OGsDangerShow amen!

I was curious about how those shells act, I bought a couple boxes last year and haven't had a chance to test them out yet. Now I know!

Tiktok isn't vine but I get what you're saying..this is like playing cops and robbers but with real guns...love these videos
I didn’t follow all of that, will re-read. But the razor broadhead loaded in a 12 gauge sounds awesome.
I think the idea is that you could miss with the slug but still possibly hit with something with the buck. Decent penetration with a spread sounds like a good idea to me.
Chicka whah whahhhh😂😂

We used the military buckshot after receiving the benelli M2 in 2008. I carried as an extra. Opening doors and room entry. It made a mess for sure. We got the M4 two weeks later and I loved it.
I shot a lot of these Winchester Defender rounds when they first were on shelves. They ALWAYS pattern the 3 buckshot in a perfect triangle around the slug.
“Sinaloa Cartel Memorial Rifle Range”. LOL.
These shells are for the man that want's his own mini cannon and musket volley effect.
These shells are like "buck and ball" loads used up to about the Civil War in smoothbores. Because everything downrange is considered uniformly hostile, the flyers will hit other enemy soldiers. This sort of load was used when soldiers would advance in ranks like the British did during the Revolutionary War.
I actually have a bunch of these and forgot what they are. Thanks for Tau!
