I had roof tinting done and also use a different roof sunshade (comes with a separate detachable silver reflective layer you can remove and just leave the mesh layer in other seasons) and it definitely is worth it. A windscreen sunshade is also invaluable especially when you leave your car parked outside (Cabin overheat still kicks in but much later than without these sunscreens)
@@Sensei_Sifu not exactly sure but the company I went with have done many Teslas without any issues. Hopefully it's not an issue ! Luckily my car is usually parked under cover at home and work
I have the BYD Atto 3 Surf Blue, and I find the the electric sunshade pretty good, which closes automatically when you lock the car... but have found though the during the course of the night with passengers in the car as an Uber driver they like it, and some request that the sun roof be open which is okay for the passengers, but fully enjoy the Atto 3. I will be getting myself a Tesla Model Y in the next few years, and would be hiring a model Y in the next few months to check it out, One thing though and I will check this out when I do some more uber again, is have the shade closed during the hot part of the day and see if that makes a difference, thanks tom for the feedback and the video. Just one thing though How did you feel when you were in the Atto 3? On a long road trip,
Jowua also sell the lighter sun shade which may be a good compromise for your situation. I’ve done a couple of long drive vids in the Atto 3, here’s one of them: BYD ATTO 3 EV DRIVE FROM SYDNEY TO MELBOURNE IN ONE DAY | January 2023 ruclips.net/video/3T9KUInbzWA/видео.html

Yeah have done the same thing, the shade I got was the same colour as the roof pillar though and I think is less noticeable. The Model 3 with the glass in two parts makes the fit a little easier for the manufacturer and like you am more than happy to keep on the roof till about April. Well worth it when it is hot and sunny and so much light anyway in summer. It does cut the heat and window tinting also makes a big difference cutting out the UV. Well worth doing both.
Great video Tom will have to have a look when we get ours. Question i watched one of your older videos on the 12v fridge/freezer you can get for the model Y just wondering how it went long term or was it just a test model thanks

Hi Tom - another great video in this hot weather. I recently added a one piece sun shade to my 2023 YLR that has two sliding portions both meeting in the middle so you can have all or just the front or the back open or closed. It really cuts down on the radiated heat that comes down on the occupants from the inside of the hot glass on a hot sunny day. One of the problems I have found with my Y is that the Air Con does not really go as cold as my 2021 3 did. When I had the 3 I had measured the temp of the air from the dashboard vents, with a digital thermometer , and found that the air temp would regularly go down to 0 degrees C. On my Y the coldest it ever goes is about 7.5 to 8 degrees C with the temperature setting set to LOW and a moderate, say 5-6, setting on the fan speed, either with the air flow set to fresh or recirculate on a moderate 25 - 30 degree day. It would be interesting to see if any of your viewers could do a similar test, in their cars, with the same settings as I used, to see if they get similar results as I got, or colder, may be around 0 degrees C. My last fossil burning car Air Con temp would regularly be around 0 - 3 C.
Thanks! That description sounds similar to the Otrifowd sunshade which I reviewed earlier: ruclips.net/video/tp-SC-Ps_C4/видео.html Interesting with the AC measurement, I haven't formally measured the air temp coming out of the vents but would be an interesting video perhaps ...
Yes it could be an interesting video. The colder the temperature of the air coming out of the vents the slower you need to run the fan and the quieter the cabin becomes. While watching youtube videos of people travelling in and/or testing Tesla cars in hot weather, the dominant noise in the cabin is the sound of the air rushing out of the air vents. This spoils the comfort of an otherwise very quiet car.
Great video Tom, maybe a good measure would be how long it would take to cool two model Ys down from sitting temperature to say 21c next to each other. That could really be interesing
Can you do a video about BYD Seal's glass roof? Is it hot during mid afternoon sun like now? Does the shade provided by BYD provide any help to reduce the heat?
Good suggestion! I briefly touched on it when I compared the Seal against the Model 3: 2024 Tesla Model 3 RWD Highland Update vs BYD Seal Premium Australia ruclips.net/video/YAaKVAST3w4/видео.html
Have wondered about this, whether an IR thermometer on the inside of MY and Seal roofs would show any difference given the Seal's supposed extra coating. Even here in NZ have found the heat from my M3's glass roof near unbearable when temperature outside is around 30°, hoping Seal will be somewhat better
Why does the Model Y not have an electric retractable sunshade for the roof? You pay so much for these vehicles it seems incongruous thats it’s not included as standard equipment. My 16 year old vehicle does (and it’s a full length glass roof similar to the Y) and theres no need to do a course in sunshade origami to store them. No prying required either. Once the heat is inside, it’s going to be very hard in any vehicle to eject it? How much power do you think you saved after the road trip with the shades on?
Would be nice to have a retractable option. With a conservative saving of 0.5kW with shades, you could potentially save 5kWh on a 10 hour road trip on a hot day which is almost 10% of the car’s usable battery
Thanks for the video, Tom. I have put off being an electric car because of those ridiculous glass roofs. I had a Landrover many years ago with glass and opening roofs and had to insulate them all.
With home insulation and reflective sarking under roof or in walls the reflective side points internally to reduce how much heat can radiate off it. Shiny slver does not radiate heat like black or any colour does, so it would be best if they had a double silver sided version who really want to insulate their Tesla. Also does anyone know if UVA and UVB are being almost fully blocked by Tesla glass?
Good review, seems like this is a worthwhile accessory for a glass-roofed Tesla. Wondering why Tesla didn't think to use polarised glass, that would automatically shade itself in hot sun. Seems a curious omission for so high tech a company.
Should compare the difference between the Seal and Tesla with no shade to feel if the Seal is better at heat management and the cooling with no shade and then with shades on each.
I have a cheap eBay sunshade in my Model Y. It’s made a massive difference. There are no gaps and it’s in perfect alignment. Tesla should include this from the factory.
In the end no amount of improved technology installed in a Tesla of any other vehicle could ever compensate fot the inefficiency of poorly chosen materials such as glass for a roof. I do like the drive and battery management technology that Tesla have developed, but a normal pale coloured headlining is more practical at every level. Hopefully BYD or someone intelligent will offer a more practical vehicle soon.

I'd say the glass roof is way more costly to manufacture than a conventional steel roof. It is also much heavier and reduces overall efficiency due to aircon working hard to get rid of the heat. Totally agree it is not appropriate for Australia.
