      Oh, just wanted to add that, if you have the bandwidth to explore this topic further, a repeat test with a good solar film to see if that could bring a Tesla glass roof to around the same temperature as the BYD glass roof. Because I think many Tesla owners would be actively considering a solar film with good IR filtering. Cheers!

      @ADudesRotary Do any cars have that feature? That could be more dangerous as it makes the kid or car easy to steal. Automatic climate control would seem better? That way, the child is both protected from being kidnapped and cooking or freezing depending on outside temperature. But the best feature is the one that warns you to check the back seat before leaving or in the BYD actual detection, our Kia just reminds us to check back seat regardless if anyone is there or not.

    Very practical test Tom, and covered all the bases.
    Last weekend I sat as a backseat passenger for 30 minutes in a Seal test drive in Brisbane with arvo temp of about 31 degrees. I could not feel the heat from the sunroof at all, and in fact I thought it was cloudy at the time, but it was just the sunroof coloration that made it seem that way as there were few clouds.
    Must say that the back seats of the Seal are a great place to be on a hot day, I was really impressed. My test drive was riddled with dozens of unknown warnings and I have to say was a deal breaker. My Atto 3 gives me a few warnings only on a 30 minute drive, and they are usually for parked cars when going around corners on narrower roads, so is at least forgivable.
    (Forgot to mention that when I drove the Seal I never actually noticed the sunroof once, whereas as a passenger it was a real feature.)

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  7 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah the milky sunroof presumably due to the silver coating makes a big difference subjectively to improve passenger comfort. We’ll see if the next OTA update improves the ADAS warnings

      Have to say for cars at this price point I would expect a built in electric operated shade for the glass roof. My KIA has that and an openable roof. I switch between having the shade retracted and covered all the time (as the sun goes behind clouds, etc) with an easy press of a button. No way I'm putting up with unfurling and manually clipping 2 shades on the roof, then unclipping and folding them and then trying to stow them somewhere!

    Had a 38C day in Melbourne few days ago, car measured 40C outside. Parked my Seal out side to go shopping and it's still very hot inside the car coming back to it. Steering wheel and seats are burning due to the sun directly shining through the front windscreen. i was surprised to put my hand on the glass roof and it's warm to the touch to the point that i can make contact and not feel the burn like the steering wheel. moral of the story is i need a silver treated windscreen shade :P

    I’ve always payed the extra for heat reflective windscreen and side glass if the manufacturer offered it as optional. When mobile phones and GPS became available you had to attach a magnetic antenna on the outside because the reflective material inside the glass will block signals. It’s not a film stuck to the glass, it’s between the two glass sheets during glass manufacturing. If it’s not tinted you can see a polarised sheen on the surface.

      Tesla hardware is all about cutting costs and budget. Its the software that makes Tesla great. I mean look at their history of removing ultrasonic sensors, removing indicator stalks etc, its all about minimizing the cost of the bill of materials. Maybe a premium model like Model S or Model X should at least have it.
      Its why the Seal is such a great value, it has many premium features even though software could use some polish.

    Excellent analysis, as usual Tom ! Thank you.
    What I don’t understand is this -
    Tesla KNOWS that the cabin heating up in the 3/Y, in hot climates (such as Australia) is a very REAL problem, despite their public denials to the contrary…
    Why doesn’t Tesla offer a steel roof version for these markets, and let the customer decide…
    Or least offer an integrated internal sunshade, and not expect owners, like yourself, to fart arse around and have to get an after market sunshade? ( BTW, your after market one, whilst it does the job, with all respect Tom, does looks very “aftermarket” and does not befit the interior of a $70k vehicle 😳😳
    Or as a 3rd option, Tesla should at least incorporate the same silver coated glass roof technology as BYD!
    It seems as though Tesla JUST DOES NOT WANT TO OFFER the same, important, critical features/inclusions that every OTHER global car manufacturer does as a matter of course…
    I mean, why is it that even a mid-spec $40-50k Hyundai, Kia or Toyota can offer a integrated sunshade….
    But the $600 billion Tesla company cannot ??
    This, along with the lack of a driver’s screen instrument binnacle, are the two deal breakers that prevented me from purchasing a model 3 a couple of years when I replaced my previous vehicle…
    Even though the rest of the car is certainly the very best in terms of EV tech and efficiency…
    Such a shame that Tesla will not offer the options/inclusions that so many former ICE owners expect to be standard on any new vehicle these days 😏😏😏

    Thanks Tom, you’ve fixed some of the problem with reflective surfaces, but again - huge variation depending on solar conditions, and with any overcast it’s just simply not possible to tell. The test would have to be done on a “blue sky” day at about the same time to really be of any value.
    Unless you have the cars sitting side by side simultaneously, the human eye can’t pick the difference with varying solar radiation and cloud cover.
    As an example it’s a cloudy (overcast) day here in Brisbane today, and my roof top solar has produced anything from just 350w to over 2.5kW within a time frame of just twenty minutes, and yet by eye it looks the same, as the human eye compensates.

      ok thanks for the suggestion but I'm done with this test lol. You guys get the idea - happy for someone to repeat this test for me on a clear day

    The shades need to be on the outside of the glass! I think in OZ you need to get the roof rapped! White would be best.

    I don't doubt that the e-coating makes a difference but this was very unscientific. Even though temps might have been similar, when you measured the Tesla temps the sun was clearly unobstructed by clouds, shadows inside the car are clear and sharp. When you measured the Seal the sun is obstructed by clouds, no clear shadows at all. This can make a big difference as it is the radiant heat of the sun driving temperatures above ambient. Measurements should be done side by side at the same time.

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  7 месяцев назад +8

      Um are we watching the same video? They were both fairly cloudy humid conditions. I mean admittedly the Seal roof makes the outside world seem 'milkier' which presumably is the silver coating. Not a bad thing imo

      @@LudicrousFeed Compare frames 3:45 and 7:21 One is bright sunshine the other is overcast filtered sun. You reckon that's the glass doing that? Even outside the car in those frames it looks different.

      I know you’re looking for a reason to doubt the authenticity of this experiment but trust me when I say conditions were very similar throughout the 90mins it took to film this video. Yes the sun may have occasionally broken through every now and then as it often does on an overcast day. In fact, if you keep watching from 4:03 onward when I’m actually measuring the temp of the cap, conditions had returned to cloudy/overcast again
