  • In this video I share my recent disastrous experience reaching another grail watch, and what went wrong after buying a Rolex Day-Date 18038. I discuss a brief history of the Day-Date, what makes it so compelling, its cultural impact, and why it has become the go-to Rolex for successful entrepreneurs. Join me as I go full presidential yellow gold for the first time, and share my impressions on the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Thank you for the brief history of the Day-Date. To check out the full article, click here:

I see what you did here. Very clever. Anyone reading the title would have assumed that the disaster was with the watch itself and would have been lured in by the thought that "Aha! I knew it. Watchbox sold TGV some junker Rolex" and would watch to see their suspicions confirmed and revel in their superiority and say "I told you so!", only to find they'd been tricked by someone more clever than themselves and learn that the disaster was with the loss of footage. Then the humanity of it all, to see TGV struggling with his own inner demons and angels (Tony Soprano and Sir Jackie Stewart) and ultimately assuring himself that he does indeed deserve the watch, backed by the blessing of his sainted "Mamma". Then to top it all off, the Marvel-esque end credits scene (spoiler alert) with Hugo deleting the footage was a cinematic masterclass. Well done sir. :)

    Ouch.
I've had that happen to me. Not that long ago, due to some computer snafu, our server at work lost an entire days worth of my work. I didn't have a backup because, you know, the server is supposed to take care of that for me. I learned my lesson and now always keep a local backup. Learn from this - don't trust a card alone. Immediately back it up to another source.
Anyway, interesting grail watch. Enjoy it in good health and success.

Congrats on the new piece TGV, it's great to hear your story and thoughts behind your pieces. I just wanted to say, it's because of you that I got into watches 4-5 years ago and purchased a Omega Seamaster (blue) 40mm for graduating law school which has been with me since 2016 on a blue rubber strap. Each time I look at it reminds me of what it means and I just love the design of the watch. I do lust over other watches but to buy another one means I'd give less time to the Seamaster. Just know you've had a tremeandous influence over young millenials like myself to get into time pieces at whatever price point, so Thank You for sharing your passioin and putting in the time to make such great content. Regards from Brisbane, Australia.

It's a definite shame you lost the video of the unboxing. I really hope you can somehow recover the footage through the various recovery softwares available. But to call it a "disaster", seems like an exaggeration. It's not like something bad happened to your newly acquired grail itself and you can no longer enjoy it. If something bad did happen to it, that would truly be a disaster.
By the way, the yellow gold 1803 or 18038 is a grail watch for me too. I hope to get one for myself some day :)

I am 54 years old and I just recently bought my first yellow gold Day-Date, and I know I earned it. But, I don't understand your apparent obsession with age for buying any watch. If you have the money and you want to buy one, then do it. Some people make a lot of money at a young age, and some people inherit money, (By the way, there is nothing wrong with inherited money), and some people are given really nice gifts. If you earned your money legally and you want a gold Day-Date then buy it. Your age does not matter.

TGV, I hope you're using high-quality memory cards; the cheap ones are not worth the risk of data loss. Although it can happen with the higher-grade cards, it is far less likely.

As someone who works in IT, SD card corruption is a terrible thing and sometimes unavoidable. I always say backup, backup, backup! I'd recommend picking up something like the WD My Passport Wireless Pro. It has a built in SD card reader so you can quickly copy the contents of an SD card to the drive so your data is in at lease two places. Anyways, awesome video as always TGV!

Data recovery is possible on some memory cards. You should definitely check that out and see if something is recoverable. Sometimes just the directory data is lost, but the footage is still on the card. Really I'm surprised I'm the first to mention this.

Listen, now it would be awesome if you recreate whole scene again and film it.Ask every single people who were In touch when filming and tell them about this. From my point of view it would be more priceless than the first time. With your funny and at the same time serious editing video skills it would be like expecting second part of some legendary movie.Dont dissapoint me on this man, nothing happens without the reason.Big up from Serbia/Belgrade.

This watch 36mm fits you particularly well. My wrist is 6.5" which i think is the same size as yours. I like generally 39", 40" or 41mm sizes but in this case ESPECIALLY when you're going to spend this much money, you had better try it on first!!! It doesn't matter the size of the watch really, what matters is the lug width, the colour of the dial and how it fits ON the wrist. Try it on! Lighter dials make the watch appear larger than it really is. In this case the light colour dial and the wider lug width combine to make a great fit to the eye.
    Superb!!! 😊

Been watching your videos for quite some time now. Enjoy your thoughts, opinions and insights. Parents got me a similar Day Date "Pastel" dial as a birthday gift over 40 yrs ago. After all these years I still love staring at it. May you have many more years to stare at yours. Continued success to you.

TGV, NY loss is Philly's gain. You'll notice when you get to Philly, there is no love lost. Looking forward to your incorporating Philly's landmarks in to your videos. Keep up the great content. Cheers.

Tbh that would be the most understated rolex i could wear. Either people would just think it's simply another gaudy fashion watch or think it is just a fake anyway because of my age.
