That interview literally made me buy 8 books about communism, Palestine, Arab socialism, media literacy and liberalism and what it all means because there ain’t no way I’m about to be destiny with the “books are boring” comment or whatever he said. i saw the ugliest part of me in him and how I hate reading too but I did it with college, like it’s possible, but idk why I choose not to keep reading. My role model is a norm or mouin not a destiny. I would rather know more. and these are 8 books that will go to your explicit biases. That ISN'T learning, unless you plan on finding good faith rebuttals and you research the extensive biases, accuracy, and credentials from the people writing them... on top of observing whether things become compatible with your own experiences and related situations at a larger scale.
Just to use that "debate" as an example, forget Destiny or Finklestein. Those two are PUNDITS, but did serve for some great entertainment... Benny Morris is highly biased, but the only person at that table even close to having the correct credentials for the talk. Mouin is HIGHLY competent in adjacent topics and was there for the right reasons. There's plenty to glean from that talk, but being lead by the nose by people we dislike will only make us stupid in the long run.

A few thoughts... the genocide in Gaza has changed everyone forever who has seen it. I'm a lot older than you. I was born in '76 and Israel has been invading, occupying and killing Palestinians for all of my life, but it's never been as bad as this. I look for humanity and see very little right now. I'm from the UK and we are facing a no win election that will lead to fascism in the end. I'm kind of glad the US one is going to be there to distract me.
I got my political education on the streets at age 15 onwards. If you haven't, I'd suggest you attend some RL meetings, rallies, and I do mean meetings, not just protests. There are usually political events that are like festivals that have lots of meetings and lots of chances to learn stuff. The people you meet and hang around with there live and breathe political thought. They'll talk about it later over drinks or whatever too. Don't just rely on the internet.
It feels like the world is heading back to dark places. The post war consensus is breaking, and the trial of Israel at the ICC feels like the trial of international law itself. The more people that can think politically in the time to come, the better.

What exactly do you expect Israel to do after Oct 7th attacks? I feel bad for people that had nothing to do with any of this on both sides. But Israel has to take care of this mess, because clearly the Palestinians won’t.

      @triforcelink 3 месяца назад

@@samthecowboy I just watched one of his videos from 4 months ago. He says g***cide a LOT, shows a few people making a fool of themselves, and some pictures of the destruction.
Current estimates put the death toll at 30k, which includes all their fighters. Also, notice from their footage that the fighters are in civilian clothing. With all the indiscriminate bombings by Israel, you mean to tell they’ve only taken out 30k people in such a dense area, and they’re all civilians?

    • @samthecowboy
      @samthecowboy 3 месяца назад

@@triforcelink I mean tbh I dont know what to tell you if you’re seeing the indiscriminate bombing of Palestinians (even if you believe every single one, the median age in Gaza before Oct 7 being 18 which is AT LEAST half of the people there being CHILDREN, are all violent “fighters”) and you believe that that is the only way for Israel to move, their right as a sovereign nation or whatever.
Palestinians have done everything under the sun for decades and decades from different peace talks to even MLK esque nonviolent protests and they have perpetually taken over by Israeli colonists with no response and a worsening situation for them every day. Maybe read South Africa’s case against Israel for their genocidal actions? It’s hard for me to understand how you (I assume) are a person that can see the one-sided nature of the “war” here and say that even just the act of bombing hospitals, journalists, or even just a random bakery (all of which have been confirmed in most cases to be on purpose) as moral or justice or not genocide?
Another great source is any of Norm Finkelstein’s works? or again if you can’t read just watch the destiny “debate” that Noah mentioned? Just please try and actually see how or why someone might describe it as a modern holocaust

I don’t often comment lol but thanks a lot for talking about this. had a similar moment this year at uni where I had to write a paper and I found myself genuinely interested in research for the first time. I liked diving deeper into a topic and it was super enlightening as someone who just coasted through school their whole life without retaining a single thing (and getting way too much positive reinforcement for it). thanks for motivating me to keep this newfound motivation alive lol. I’m really trying to break the habit of half-doing things I know I genuinely care about. it’s tempting to just engage at the surface level because nobody really calls you out for that, but I can see people who have such a deep knowledge of their field and it looks so much more rewarding and impactful. anyways, long comment to just say that it’s neat to hear someone else talk abt this. cool stuff.

I’ve been through a similar thought process and recently arrived to a conclusion : too much thinking and not enough action = bad, too much action and not enough thinking = bad. Especially when it comes to politics it’s easy to feel like you’re never doing enough and falling into one or the other option without taking the time to breathe.
I believe the best way to keep that balance while maintaining a steady intellectual , emotional, spiritual growth is by engaging in community groups. By volunteering, by using your actual physical body to go to conferences, it helps stay grounded and feel less alone in this era of hyper global awareness that can quite literally make you go insane.
Let’s all just go touch grass and plant a few seeds with other humans along the way, pull out some weeds water the crops, insert more gardening imagery
Kinda lost my train of thought at the end there but I’m on theme with this channel, what i’m trying to say is let’s jus take a deep breath and cultivate a healthy social life to complement our individual research and actions, all for the sake of our love for this planet and the living beings on it

I have been going through this exact process recently (realizing I'm a bit of a dumbass and desiring to improve my knowledge on a fundemental level so that I can engage with people in honest dialouge) starting with political theory and feminist thought.
I am a full time parent so the idea of "learning how to learn" is really important to me. I need to be able to teach myself in the limited amount of "free time" I have, while also supporting my kid who is just beginning school, assuring them that what they need aren't perfect grades, but the ability to teach themselves and the joy of gaining knowledge.

I realized the same about being essentially a sheep in an echo chamber on twitter and talking like I know things and its definitely a very life changing realization plus the Gaza stuff. I realized I had a severe social media addiction and although I’m not gone from it completely, I’ve switched my phone to a dumb phone and man it’s really helping. Controlling internet use, not mindlessly scrolling, looking with intention, and questioning things more.

I'm in the final weeks before I'm set to graduate with my undergraduate degree
the current shape of my political activism, along with crippling senioritis has me on a cosmic level of burnout and and a feeling I'll never be able to actually do anything worthwhile. The problems are so big, so many other people have been working their entire lives to solve it and nothing has happened, so many people dont *want* things to get better.
I've been on a cycle of burnout for years, being able to see someone who's completely new to the process describe their experience I think is gonna be really helpful in helping me to manage my own.

Noah, thank you so much for what you do. just realizing we are the same age and have had a similar political development trajectory. I also have ADHD, and have been trying to educate myself on history and theory - things I am very interested in - but I reread and reread pages and sometimes feel like I am… just not very smart and struggle with learning. when I was in school, I also performed well, but felt like I was just able to bullshit my way through without actually learning. when you spoke about school, that part really resonated with me.
however, I have recently kept revisiting material and slowly feel like I am able to learn. think the takeaway for me recently has been that learning is practice and continued practice. sometimes I hope reading/hearing something once will allow it to stick in my mind, and I get impatient.

Searching for truth is an interesting pursuit. I think that it’s noble and worthwhile. I also think that the path to truth can really easily turn into the path of conspiracies. Not all the time. Not most of the time. But a lot conspiracy theorists especially the ones that are truly consumed and enveloped by the nebula of conspiracy, got there because they recognized that they were missing something and went searching for truth. I think the problem is that people seeking the “secret truth” are super vulnerable to liers and scammers they are so eager to learn that they aren’t critical enough of what is presented to thrm

I've gone through a similar experience when it comes to feeling like my knowledge is surface level, but my values and principles are deeply embedded. I did really well at uni, but I also struggled to read anything in depth and became good at scanning documents for points that would help my already-developed argument. I then went through an identity crisis being around people who seemed to be able to recall quotes from journals etc, when I could only remember the general 'vibe' of texts. I'm a bit older now and have realised that there are just different approaches to these things, and not one is better than the other, but you have to be open about where you're coming from. For me, it's from a values/principles perspective, so I am always open to learning from others. For others, it's from rigorous historical study and an encyclopedic knowledge of an issue.
Sorry for the rant, this video obviously hit a nerve 😅

"Thinking takes time." is a phrase that changed me forever. I heard it explained to me as a young teen. Anyone who has a quick response to a complex topic has either A) deeply thought about the subject and has an appropriately complex answer, or B) b*llsh*tting immediately to dominate the conversation etc etc.. You can always tell which you're dealing with if you try and stay focused on what the other party is saying.
Take your time and think things through, and then speak. For anyone who likes the "intellectual battlefield" approach, this is winning strat #1.

I think you would enjoy buying physical books on subjects you want to explore or improve in. I start a new/unfamiliar subject/idea and go from kids to middle grade, to high school/college to young adult/semi professional in mostly nonfiction books to build on knowledge instead of consuming a very niche subject in a short period and then it all falling out of my brain the next week bc my search rabbit holes are unconnected and inefficient. Take notes. Find multiple sources. Pick some question other than a RUclips video or google search away, and then find the answer. Go to the Wikipedia sources and the references, resources, and bibliography sources you find in the ones consumed consistently. Go where your heart and mind want but choose a purpose or direction with mindless surfing as you would for any other drug. Only use RUclips videos in moderation, but background while you do other things like a podcast or audiobook to get more of the basics before jumping into a first book is also helpful. Also the learning how to learn book and by the same author, common sense teaching, I think

You should read up on dialectics and contradictions, i’d say start with Mao’s “On Contradiction” & “On Practice” and also Stalin’s “Dialectical and Historical Materialism”.

I love all of this, and as someone who has seen how little people cared about Palestine despite their pleas and the pleas of the communities I had been a part of for a few years it's wild to see this sudden shift and even just like people even talking about Palestine outside of my usual circles.
For myself personally, the queer anarchist side of tumblr radicalized me years ago and has always been my greatest source of genuine online community and learning. I have read more theory, history,, articles, studies, etc thanks to my friends who share vital resources and seeing as I've always been an avid 'rabbit-holer' not only does digging deeper and deeper and deeper teach me more, but also being able to share what i learned and teaching others is what solidifies it all in my brain...
Further more , getting responses that bring up points i didn't think of or add another perspective that builds upon this knowledge base is the _truly_ rewarding part. Luckily for myself I've got 10 years of experience with this kind of "philosophizing", but never really thought deeper into it and learning to do so. The pursuit of knowledge truly keeps me going.
Recently I read a lot more deeply into the Korean war thanks to trying to teach a fellow lefty why North Korea is the way it is and why they would outwardly state their support of Palestine. I learned.... so much. The first hand accounts from the people who survived the war was genuinely shocking to me because it's exactly the same things that are currently happening in Gaza, I think every leftist should read into it because it's all so deeply interconnected that when you look at it all together you just fundamentally deepen your understanding of the world and politics and how the US and it's allies continually get away with genocide to the point where the average person either doesn't know about it or doesn't believe it happened.
Take care of yourself and try not to let the inevitable despair of knowing the truth and watching everyone deny or not care take over. Love these lil ramble sessions, as they get my ADHD trainwreck of thoughts out too lolol

In a way I guess I understand what some of it feels like, as of late i am still coming into terms with the fact thati'm not currently in a good state of mind and it feels...just scary i guess. It's conforting to know that someone out there goes through something similar, so thanks for sharing your thoughts/experiences in here, hope u get to that place you're aiming to be at.

Imposter syndrome man. Even when you make genuine progress and improve at something, the growing responsibility that comes with it makes you feel as if you have made no progress. Hard to see the fruits of your labor in the moment when you know where you started and don’t really feel that different from then. Huge in my field (medicine). Keep your head up you do great work.

Now that you've figured out how to learn, learn how to speak. I mean that in the sense that learning the socially appropriate ways to have a conversation with another person in different circumstances. This has been a major roadbump for my personal growth. I figured that since I was raised with the English language I just knew how to speak but there was so much I didn't know

(As the start of the story demonstrates) While we all start knowledge from an emotional basis (and probably no one ever truly leaves it) we need a way to process being incorrect.
(Admission: I have no idea how. Logically it's easy to imagine, but contending with the emotional side is daunting. Perhaps understanding where your own emotions come from, so you know how to be in tune with those values, but change the prescription. Like why certain things make you feel sad or happy, regardless of whether it's common or uncommon.)
eg: We all want [some social moral value] but we assume [policy A] will lead to it, and not [policy B]. If someone is against [policy A], people in favor of [policy A] will think their detractors are against [some social moral value], but they're not against the moral value, they just believe your policy will not lead to the outcome. ( The answer is OBVIOUS to everyone, that your opponents are ontologically evil. 😉)
