I once read a neat way of framing laziness vs dysfunction as:
Laziness is when you could do the thing but are choosing not to, and you're fine with that choice.
Executive dysfunction is when you want to the the thing, are trying to do the thing, but cannot start or finish doing the thing.
Also regarding the good/bad wording. I feel like it's ok to say having a clean place is good, because it does feel good. The issue starts when we place the morality on the person, so like having a clean place means YOU are good.

    • @acrollie

This is a really good way of putting it. I personally definitely have my lazy moments, I don’t want to write it off completely because it’s such a human experience (not to say that you are, this is more general commentary on the themes of the video and channel). I also think we still just shouldn’t moralize being lazy or being dysfunctional, I like the cleaning content online for this reason because it makes me feel human to see that other peoples’ homes get just as dirty as my room does and it doesn’t make them any less of a person.
Messes just are. It’s good to try to work around or through them, not because it’s the “right” thing to do, but because it gives you a fresh space and good feelings. Having lazy or dysfunctional moments isn’t bad though, it just is. No one is a failure for not keeping up with things in the moment, or struggling with tasks in general. The mess will get cleaned at some point, not doing it right away does not make you a bad person.
I’ve started focusing more on personal hygiene tasks, because feeling clean physically does help me feel a LOT better, and sitting in a clean space is also extremely satisfying. But more than anything else, though I haven’t been consistent with it, doing more small exercises has given me some motivation to get out of bed, and do some cleaning as well in the moments where I need to take a rest. It’s like it’s supporting my desire to get things done but feeling like such a slug that I couldn’t. And I’m still having periods where my dysfunction is getting in the way of things, but I don’t know how to explain that it’s easier having these three things bounce off of each other rather than relying on just sheer self-induced willpower and motivation to get things done- because I really didn’t have those things. I have no spoons on my own 😣

I love this phrasing of the problem. It still can mean making the choice to be 'lazy' for a day doesn't come easy, and in fact even once you've made that choice, you still feel guilty. But one step closer. You're spot on about attaching morality to staying clean, or lazy.

I’ve always been dysfunctional with stuff relating to productivity and keeping things going my whole life. I have ADHD and a bunch of other stuff, and executive dysfunction disorder(s?) have kicked my ass. I’ve had to deal with a narcissistic roommate for 6 years in isolation, and recently got away from that. But going through that ended up with me losing myself, my identity and any purpose, and even though I want to just clean up and take inventory but I never do until the last moment or until I can’t stave it anymore.

i am always finding coping strategies for my silly adhd brain and sillier mildly disabled body, and they are always backfiring on me eventually because sometimes sisyphus just has to lay at the bottom of the hill getting crushed by his big boulder for a while. You've made me go from one productive day a week and 6 days of burnout, to being productive for however long these videos are every day. my space is slowly going from terrible, to not that, instead of being spotless for 1, clean for 2, and a depression den the other 4. I don't know how long this will keep working, but even if these videos themselves don't, it's kind of making me want to start my own since you said making videos helps you, and i've found that blogging has helped me overcome a lot of bad habits before.

one thing ive learned from organization and interior design channels is that sometimes we can tweak our environments so things are easier to keep clean. having stuff to drop stuff in where we typically drop stuff or creating systems around the chaos -- that way we dont have to use the parts of our brains that get worn down easily by having to plan and negotiate the mess on the daily. my coffee table is a junk magnet -- but if i have bins on and under the coffee table to collect the different types of junk then it doesnt look like its full of junk, it looks like ive organized my junk. i throw trash in my sink and it gets nasty and soggy so i got a tiny trashcan that goes next to my sink where i can throw stuff away so it doesnt go in the sink.

The story about the ants reminds me of philosophy book "The Meaning of Human Existence" by the late entomologist E.O. Wilson. I have to paraphrase, because I can't find the exact excerpt, "What should you do if you see an ant inside your house on a windowsill or in the kitchen? Leave it be, maybe drop a little crumb of something for it, and welcome a fellow being of the universe as momentary guest in your space."

Then shovel all the stuff on my bed onto my desk, maybe put one or two things away. Repeat. Bed becomes tray, desk becomes tray.

I'm the organized mess sort of person. I know where everything is right now because it is where it is because that's where I can remember it. Once I clean today, I better have used everything I'll need to use this week because it might be missing for a little bit. The cleaned environment is very nice and cozy and I love it so that's why I clean it but the trade off is everything has changed and that's stressful too.

We didn't finish it, but I was really fascinated by all of the little nuanced observations around "being handy", and also how the narrator kept tying it back to Phaedrus (I think that's how you spell their name) and their story. Laziness exists in so far as it’s in our best interest as an animal that needs calories to survive that we don’t move in excess to what we HAVE to move. In that way, “laziness” is the animal condition. * me watching my cats sleep all day long * In that sense, it’s completely normal, natural and even healthy to be “lazy.”
That’s the kind of life humans should strive for, yet it’s not.. endless work is the goal.

This video series means so much to me. It's wholesome, and honest, and it often makes me laugh out loud. I have issues with this cleaning stuff, and stuff like this is reinventing, in my mind, my perspective on chores. I believe that you could write a decent memoir. Perhaps you could get A.I. to edit all of these videos together, transcript it, and make a manuscript. You may think that this is just random musings, but to me this is the evolution of RUclips. It went from extra confined and performative TV and Radio, through the years, towards a more human story. Something real.
I don't know what I'm saying. I'm just placed very-much into presence and a spiritual awareness when I see this. Thanks for being creative.

I do this thing I call a ‘reset day’ (i didn’t come up with it I think I saw it on tiktok) where once a week (for me it’s Sundays) I dedicate the day to cleaning. It’s not like 24 hours of hardcore cleaning but more like a chill, cleaning and watching something/listening to music, day. As someone who is autistic and has adhd I’ve struggled a lot with finding the balance between routine and a digestible work load, and this has helped me a lot since it allows me to have a messy space, knowing I’ll clean up at the end of the week. I also find it pretty meditative since I get to take care of my space and by proxy, myself.

I consume a lot of cleaning content for body doubling purposes, but as the vast majority of that content is made by SAHMs (which I am not), it's never been relatable nor really even that interesting to me. I also find self-improvement content really hard to digest because of its lack of relatability.
I really feel seen by this content. I've been looking for something like it for so long, and it's finally here, and seeing that it seems like there's a real appetite for it is really encouraging. Bipolar disorder and ADHD make this self-investment stuff really hard sometimes, but doing it alongside someone I feel more connected to (parasocial relationship or not) has made it a lot more accessible. word suggestion: as u were explaining that cleaning is not bad or good, i think the phrase you were looking for is “morally neutral.” the definition of “morally neutral” in ethical theory is more of making a inconsequential decision or action… whereas colloquially ppl think of morally neutral as being something that doesnt have morals and just is!! cleaning would fit the colloquial definition perfectly; a required act which doesn’t hold morality, like breathing.

Hey Noah, haven't watched the video yet, but wanted to say thank you for these, especially all the content recently. Moved back home after grad school in August, and was in a pit for a while, jobless and purposeless. Things have started looking up recently again, but your videos finally got me to start unpacking and cleaning up again. I probably had more than 30 boxes (20 from where I lived, 10+ from my mom's place, I'm with my dad now). The task seemed so daunting and…permanent, maybe? But your videos really got me motivated to clean and continue cleaning and unpacking, and I'm down to my last box today. That said, I now have a ton of organizing to do, but these videos have made me realized how therapeutic and meditative cleaning really can be. I always thought of cleaning as punishment and something you needed to do to perfection, but these videos have been so peaceful and almost judgement-free that it just feels good to go at my own pace without fear of not being good enough. The mess I currently have may be worse than the boxes being packed away, but I feel so free without being surrounded by walls of cardboard boxes, haha. Okay, time to play the video and get on this last box!!!

You are such fun and a joy to listen too, Content Machine.
Please don't stop making these entertaining videos on this channel. You present a realistic and human experience of life, your life and speaking your mind without inhibitions. So refreshing nowadays.
I was made aware of your channel when a video ended and Autoplay was enabled, which I normally disable with a QUICKNESS after having deleted the cookies.
Anywho, while "working" (from home, cause a fellow introvert overhere, hi 👋🏽
I noticed that my stress levels where reducing and didn't feel like working anymore.
Midway through your rambling about the dishes in the video I cracked up laughing and was like,...
'Who tf is this? Who is this chill sounding dude with the soothing stress reducing voice?'
I immediately moved my chair towards my private laptop screen on my desk. Now i'm in the process of bingewatching your videos on this channel and guess what Noah...
You have EARNED yourself a new subbie, congratulations!
Your presence on the 'Tube' gives me a shred of hope and faith in humanity. Of people being honest, open and vulnerable. And yes, even the unannounced and announced burps while drinking are welcome *cracks me up* (as long as they remain oral and won't blow off my headphones, I'm Gucci 😎)
To me, your vlogs remind me of having 'real life struggles' conversations with a good, loyal longtime friend who's not afraid of being vulnerable, open and honest while being, often unintentionally, funny and goofy at the same time.
Edit: My apologies in advance for any linguistic errors I may have made in this dissertation as English is not my first language. I'm out

i spent years turning these daily/weekly/monthly tasks into habits. it was rough at times, putting them in my phone calendar helped(with a push notification reminder). totes worth it though. one of the best things for me was.. they take a lot less out of me now. they're no longer a chore. they're just things i do sometimes. the routine also helps keep me steady, cause i know what i will be doing on that day at that time. it provides an amount of certainty that can be hard to find these days.. plus seeing the finished work does genuinely feel good. I did that!

KC Davis is pretty active on tiktok, and always frames it as "You deserve to live in a clean space," or "You deserve to be comfortable," and I've always loved that framing. You're not doing self-care tasks because it is moral or right or correct, but because you deserve to feel comfortable in your space and a clean space feels more comfortable to move in than a dirty one. She also is great at the whatever-works-for-you approach where you break down self-care tasks to a point that you can functionally do them. If you need to use paper plates to have a clean kitchen, that's okay. You're not individually responsible for the dumping of trash in the ocean or the millions of gallons of jet fuel celebrities and corporations use. You can use paper plates to facilitate a clean space and not feel guilty.

cleaning is a form of self care. doing stuff that will benefit your health and wellbeing are self care. brushing your teeth, keeping your space free of allergens and mold, doing stuff that is fundamental for maintaining your physical wellbeing is all self care. not doing these things isnt a sign of laziness; its a sign that something somewhere is wrong with your wellbeing. we arent individual actions but complex systems and when one part of the system breaks down other parts start to. rest is good, but needing so much rest that you cant function in other places of your life is a sign of poor health, not a moral failing. but also most of us just need more rest because we live in a world that doesnt prioritize rest.

How to keep house while drowning changed how I think about care tasks significantly. I do not have the energy to keep my space perfectly clean and organized. Re: the tension between not moralizing care tasks and cleaner spaces being more functional and feeling better, it's still a tradeoff that I make, but I (try to be) compassionate with myself when I make those choices.

I definitely like the more live commentary style of Noah Time, it feels more raw - more yap like. I don't mind these style of videos but if feels like you're trying to fill time rather than just spewing random ideas as they come to you.
