      Laziness certainly does exist. I think it’s important that more recognition is being given to neurodivergence, however labelling away different forms of laziness, does not mean you are incapable of being lazy. I had ADHD and I can be lazy, yes they are not mutually exclusive - but if you explain away all your flaws then you’ll eventually just embrace them entirely.

    • @RR-hl6zi
      @RR-hl6zi 4 месяца назад +10

      @@Oscar_ArmstrongThat is true, but to a certain extent. I fell into the trap of trying to unlabel everything, up to the point that everything can be chalked up to either personality or 'character type'. And that does do a disservice to people who actually suffer from disorders or collections of dysfunctional behaviours that can be lessened and/or treated through proper medical and psychological health care.
      That's when I embraced my own (properly diagnosed by a medical professional) ADHD, am undergoing treatment and feeling much better.
      People do have a tendency to label themselves OCD or ADHD by recognizing one or two behaviours and then self-diagnosing. That's bad. Recognize bad behaviours, fix them if they bother you, but don't self-diagnose without following up with a professional.
      (this turned into more than 2 cents, sorry)

      Good to see someone make this point.
      Didn't David Graeber write on "lazy" in an essay? I know there's some argumentation around it in his "On BS Jobs" essay, but I thought he had another work on it but I'm getting way too many search returns that just point me back to the original essay.

      And when I spend 2000 hours on wildrift, instead of going to college? I haven't even tried streaming to see if I become popular
      Is that laziness?? It feels pretty laze to me, and I'm living it. But I also hate doing anything at all. I just wanna sit down and play a game of league or wildrift and "challenge" myself to perform better and learn more about the skill and lore of the game. But I hate going to my job, I've convinced myself I have adhd and dyslexia even though I haven't been diagnosed, and I tell myself that if I go to college I'll just flunk out due to shortcomings outside of my power. When in reality I probably could do it if I really put the effort behind it!! But never in my life EXCEPT for gaming have I ever felt the motivation to such a thing.

    • @black-nails
      @black-nails 4 месяца назад +12

      @@MercurialDecreeit can also be avoidant tendencies. It may look like laziness from the outside (= just don't want to work), but you need to ask yourself why not; do you actually want to do the thing? if yes, why; if you want it, but don't even try because you think you are terrible and suffer from low self esteem and catastrophic thinking, than its those issues and not laziness you meed to work on. You could have ahdh/ something else , but that doesn't mean there's no way of managing it, getting support and accomodations.

    • @april6620
      @april6620 4 месяца назад +2

      @black-nails you bring up great points (the ones I came to make)! And also, another one I have learned about recently is, pathological demand avoidance.
      Trauma response.... and all those you listed (and I'm spacing on) are really things to dive into.
      I'm "busy" quite a bit. And even when I'm not, it feels like I am... (from what my body and brain are doing or because my young kiddos need something.... but i cant ever finish anything. Tbh half the time i dont even bother starting. Sigh.)
      I was raised in a very old school fundie but more solemn family/religion. everyone, even extended family, going back generations... so there was a lot of shame and worry about moral failings, and there was no safe person i could talk to about things and my differences. at almost 45yo, I'm still working through... and learning so much about myself, the world and finally getting the confirmation that the things I was calling bs on actually are bs.
      Idk if this is considered trauma dumping, Apologies if so... my old ass is still learning how to be social, not to mention what the hell to do with/on social media.
      It's definitely rambling. Gigglesnort.

    The need to "be productive" all the time and the feeling of worthlessness when you aren't are intrinsically tied to capitalism.
    Within capitalism, human worth is often defined by your ability to "produce work" (hence "being productive") and increase capital for your employer. People who don't contribute to the production of goods and services are viewed as "lesser than". This "productivity" mindset doesn't just exist at the workplace, people often take this mindset home with them and apply it everywhere else in their life.
    It's not strange that there is a large stigma against people who want to relax (be lazy) and enjoy some peace in their life. Your boss doesn't make any money from you relaxing, unless relaxing restores your energy to "be more productive" in the near future.

    Gonna HIGHLY recommend the book Laziness Does Not Exist by Dr. Devon Price. I feel like so many people in the comments will relate to it, because even though it tackles the concept of “laziness” overall, the author is Autistic and there’s definitely a neurodivergent perspective woven throughout. It’s my favorite book to recommend for abolishing capitalism brain rot. :)

Then, I just add it to the pile of things that I have started but not finished. I fucking hate it.

    I can totally relate to this. I am a 41 year old high school psychology teacher and a dedicated stepfather and boyfriend. I am responsible and do what I have to do keep up my house, make dinner, and teach my students. But, I want nothing more than to lay down on my couch and game after a long day at work. I feel irresponsible, but there is only so much I can do. On top of it, the district that I work for keeps piling on more and more responsibility for teachers, a lot of which is only necessary for state regulations and funding like data collection and analytics. It eats up so much time that I'd rather spend preparing for my students or being a good father.. or reading for fun. Our administration always talks about self care, but they always find one more thing to tack on our schedule. I've outsourced so much of the BS to ChatGPT just to make it look good, and then I focus my attention on the serious stuff that affects my students like grading, planning, etc. It's sad how much the grind set culture has impacted and penetrated into our society.

    Dude you're literally describing ADHD. Most of us are exactly the same!
    I will say though - maybe ADHD and other neurodivergent "conditions" are not medical disorder and are in fact just natural personality types, part of the diverse spectrum of our species.
    We have an inbuilt intolerance of power structures, injustice and having someone else dictate our actions. We're like humanity's natural immune cells against exploitation and authoritarianism.
    I firmly believe that many of humanity's greatest explorers, inventors, artists, musicians and story tellers were and are similar personality types.
    Personally I think we need to stop letting the exploiters define us. We need to define ourselves and live our lives as our nature intended. I think if we all supported each other to achieve that, capitalism or whatever techo-feudalism has overtaken it would crumble.

      Neurodivegence isn't personality type, it's a type of neurological development. We are not better than neurotypicals, we are all needed- that's the point of diversity. There's tons of people who who autistic/ have adhd and they still support totalitarianism and other harmful issues. Having black and white thinking, having precise moral compass can all be good things, but it all depends on inner values of specific person.

I've been considering doing YT for a few years, bc I was in arts + media before needing disability & I've organically accumulated enough outlines/ideas for a couple years of content while absorbing norms of the medium/genres I like as I listened + watched RUclips during my health crisis.
    I was visible in my last writing role in my community. It was pure terror even tho it's the smallest of potatoes. I want to create bc that's how I do community. But that tiny slice of "people I don't know knowing me beyond my byline" was freaky beyond belief & I've been thinking a lot about how platforms like this could somehow yield the same reach as my college radio station. I just wanna find my weirdos again. Anyways I've been wondering if I'm healed enough + resilient enough to try something again.
    I dunno it's been weird years lately. But we only have 1 life at a time, so?

But just like a drug addict, I relapse and buy a 2,000$ gaming rig and live like a crack head for months/years of time straight. I’ve been lucky to have a lot of success in my life and make over 100,000$ a year, but I’m currently coming off a 2 year gaming binge and I really need to cut that shit out of my life for good. I just sold my rig again and I’m looking forward to this next run of “sobriety”. Life does truly get better when you stop gaming for 12-14 hours a day and go outside and invest time and energy into relationships. The “I don’t have energy to do XYZ” doesn’t come from being tired from: your job/social outings/physical exercising, it comes from being a fucking hermit and NOT subjecting yourself to things like that for a long period of time.

    How do you learn about the algorithm? i don't got the time an energy for a yt channel right now but planning to later this year when I'm finished w school. Also relate so much to doing the bare minimum, why would you do any more when you're not interested in it?

    (sorry for a billion words, btw)
    First I'll just say that in my experience, analytics feel like they've always just poisoned me. And sometimes I see smaller creators like...lose their mind trying to pore over analytics that have 100 subscribers, and it just gets them to see "patterns" that aren't there and chase shadows, and work hard on things that aren't their passion. I still look at them, but I never really know what to learn from them other than "this thumbnail could be better"--like a week late into the video being out, when there's a billion other factors and stuff. It feels like guessing sometimes, and I know there's things I could do better but... I guess I just hope people find their way to things.
    As someone who...bridges a fair few number of topics, I've seen a lot of different youtube creators spaces that all have their own gospels of what the best practices are and what to fixate on, how often to post, etc etc etc.
    What I've mostly learned from these spaces is that there's no right way.... to an extent. If you want to do essays but you're listening to advice for minecraft streamers or something, yeah... you're gonna get it wrong. If you read "post once a week or YT won't say hi to you anymore at the gym" ...maybe weigh the context you're in and that essays can't be weekly without (as we've seen recently) cutting some corners that *should not* be cut.
    I've stuck to uhh...more or less "being myself" because I know that otherwise I'd go insane if I had to stick to one singular topic niche. Like, for example, I make stuff about history games... but I'm eventually going to run out of angles to dissect the genre from, games to talk about, things to say that don't just sound like a reskin of an old conversation. Buuuuuut, that's not the only thing I'm interested in, and so even if some people prefer to niche down their content because of the algorithm and best practice, or even though some people prefer their channels they sub to to "stay in their lane" --I just can't follow that advice, and honestly, I think that makes me less replaceable, not more. It sounds super narcissistic maybe, but people come to the channel less for the thing the video is on, and more because they want my perspective on a thing, or guidance in learning about it, or just... idk, my bad taste in meme edits.
    I remember being super afraid that the algorithm would hate me for not sticking to one niche, and for sure it... botches some releases more than others (like, takes 2 months to realize what the audience *should* be), but for the most part, that's a fine trade off, especially when, eventually things still find their place more often than they don't.
    I remember thinking maybe nobody was interested in my Iraq video, or that it just wasn't to the right standard, or had a terrible thumbnail... and then like a week ago, after half a year, it just started getting views and the reaction has been super positive. And I remember sometimes people pour a whole year of academia into papers that get read by like 4 people... and how that sucks in its own way, even if it's "for a grade"-- and a video getting even 10k views is like... a full venue of people.
    I love youtube, it sucks c:
