      I really struggle with this. When it comes to pets, I'm great at cleaning and giving them a nice, cozy place, but when it comes to myself, I struggle to value myself enough for this to work. The only reason I started making my bed every morning is because my dog likes to lay on the bed when it's made.
      I've got a lot of internal work to do, but I'm glad I can care about my pets while working on caring for myself.

    First?…….along the lines of “laziness isn’t real” I’ve also heard the sentiment that “mess is neutral.” Even though I don’t like messes in my home, sometimes it’s good to remember that when there inevitably is a mess, it isn’t a reflection of my moral character. It’s just a mess that needs cleaning.

    I was raised in a conservative, religious household so cleanliness and purity were constant themes. Also, looking ‘put together’ was very important. My mom wore a full face of makeup during chemo if that helps paint a picture. There were probably a lot of anxiety disorders, such as OCD and GAD, undiagnosed in my family tree.
    I’ve had to work from the opposite direction: learning to let go and have a little mess here and there. I know it’s lame, but I often tell myself, ‘everything in moderation’ and ‘nothing is perfect’ to keep me from spiraling. I also have to stay away from a lot of social media content. I know on an intellectual level it’s all staged and filtered, but the irrational part of my mind freaks out when it sees those insane fridge restocking videos. They do not calm me, lol.

    I know I sound like a broken record - but I'm 40 and just in December I got diagnosed with ADHD. I had lived up until now with the impression that I wasn't focused, I was just lazy. Working as a pharmacy, it's sorta valid - medications are over prescribed and abused. So I removed so many distractions and obstacles that prevented me from getting stuff done. I removed everything I possibly could. But I didn't go to therapy. Started last year and in October I started depression meds then in December did the three hour evaluation for ADHD. Started adderall XR in January and it was a night and day different. My kitchen is constantly clean, my room is kept clean.I wake up at 7, take the dog out for a walk, empty the dishwasher while my water is heating up. Make my coffee and just chill until 830 watching youtube while drinking it. The stuff that was a challenge now feels effortless. I spent a weekend and learned Tableau for work so I could advance my career. I kind of wish I did this sooner, but all those skills that I spent 40 years honing are now infinitely more valuable because of the medication. Like I've been wearing body weights this whole time and I finally took them off. Do I struggle? Yes. But I have the resolve to better myself even further.

    Anyway, I live with a disabled person who has chronic pain and my spouse who is a workaholic and deeply internalizes productivity = self-worth. I have tendencies to judge myself based on how much I got done in a day but recognize rest is a part of survival. On a peripheral note Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey is dope. She is largely communicating to POC, but I think everybody can benefit from it.
    Side note, I too wanted to start a cleaning channel. I have worked as a house keeper and professional organizer on and off for the last couple of years and my jobs have been deeply therapeutic for me. Meditative, physical, clearing.

  • @mutecryptid
    @mutecryptid 4 месяца назад +262

    The tension is probably because if you’re disabled these things are often out of your control or painful and the only response ever, even medically, is always the dismissive stuff. “Ignore your pain and get the task done!” Even when that makes you pass out for 12 hours after and you have to take a break every 5 minutes so you have enough energy to be able to function enough to eat. That perspective was made to be intentionally right coded by the right to say that every disabled person is responsible and therefore blamed for their inability which kinda ruins a lot and means these talking points tend to open up wounds that require medical intervention but cannot get it. I personally only watch self help to try and work around my disability exclusively, which isn’t what I’m supposed to do but it helps. With women/afab people especially, there are so many catch up diagnoses because “thats a boys disease” and they don’t realize the have a clinical disability, they just assume they’re lazy, this was me for 20 years. That almost killed me multiple times (im bad at trying tho💀)
    Just a thought.

      Fellow disabled person here. Love and spoons to you, friend. ❤️❤️❤️🥄🥄🥄 If you're interest in low-fuss methods I use when I can:
      I have two Clorox wands: one for tub and one for toilet - or, after I'm done washing my face, I put shampoo on my wash cloth to wipe down the shower. I keep dish soap in a pump by every sink, so I can wipe down counters, spills, or eyeglasses without pulling out a cleaning bucket. I use whatever is within reach, such as a dirty towel, wash rag, clean handkerchief, paper towels, or baby wipes. If I don't have the energy, it's okay. My sister and I hire a cleaning lady once or twice a year, when it feels like the bathrooms need more of a scrub than we can manage.

      I feel you. I'm currently at the diagnostic stage where they think it's not MS but I have enough symptoms that I'll be getting a yearly brain MRI with and without contrast.
      I'm nearing 35 and have had these symptoms to some degree for at least a decade Late diagnosed ADHD at 32 too and I'm sure I'm also autistic but trying to get that looked into with my current neurology situation sounds like a lot of stress so 🤷🏻‍♀️
      My symptoms wax and wane so I try to get stuff done on the lower-intensity symptom days but it's so easy to overdo it and I often end up worse off after; then can't even be proud of myself. It's like I have a terrible, chronic case of 'let me just finish this up'-itis because there's always so much to do. This is all doubly bad when my depression is also getting to me.
      And this is with access to healthcare - I'm lucky in that regard, but it's still like trying to run a marathon on a broken hamster wheel.

      To all of you here, as someone who was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 11, Fibromyalgia in my 20s, Neuropathy in my 30s, and now in my 40s Trigeminal Neuralgia and I'm scheduled for a Nerve Conduction Study, EMG and spinal tap all this month as my neurologist believes I may have MS (my grandmother had it, plus the amount of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, and severe vitamin D deficiency puts me high risk and I'm falling constantly, I so understand it all. I've lived almost an entire life with physical disabilities and mental illness because they all go hand in hand. My depression was so bad in 2021 until recently (like this past month), and I just didn't care. I lost a plant collection of 250+, literally just watched them die day by die. Then last year I lost my exhusband who was also my best friend to a heart attack at 42, and I lost my beloved pupper Lola at the age of 10 and I really didn't think I would find my way out of the hole I was in. I felt so broken. I worked in mental health for 18 yrs doing group therapy, so I'm very educated in what I was dealing with, and know the things you're supposed to do, but I couldn't. I finally got a better healthcare plan (I'm on Medicare, it's crap) and my copays dropped from $45 to $15 and I've been able to afford regular psychiatric appts and weekly therapy. And the meds have really finally started to make a noticeable difference and I can't remember the last time I had this much energy, and self motivation. It's going to take me probably a month to get my house back in order, there are places that haven't been dusted, areas under furniture that haven't been swept or mopped, and piles of laundry I've never put away for 3 yrs now, but I finally want to get it done. I still can only do so much in a day because my feet and back just hurt so much and so quickly, but the determination is there. I even went to the gym this week, the first time since before 2020.
      It's hard, damn is it so hard living with any chronic illness whether it's physical or mental, and usually they go together, but you eventually find your own rhythm. You learn to work smarter, and you learn what to prioritize and what to let go. I highly recommend all of you in this thread to Google the spoon theory, it really helped me to understand my limitations, and helped me to explain my life to friends and family, because they don't get what we go through, and they won't ever fully get it, unless they get it, meaning being diagnosed themselves. Prioritize yourself always, otherwise our health falls apart. ❤

    I use a mix of vinegar and dish soap to clean my tub. Equal parts of each in the microwave for 2-3 minutes, then mixed - not before. Pour it around your bathroom and scrub it in gently, then walk away for 30 minutes. Once you come back, scrub it again then spray away with cold water and it will be clean as fuck. No real elbow grease required.
    edit: misspelled vinegar.

    Going just off that line in the thumbnail, yeah its not.
    I used to be so miserable when I was younger (I still dabble in it from time to time) and along with that came the complete lack of self-confidence, the self-deprecating jokes, the I’m-toughing-it-out attitude.
    Felt like the only appropriate approach to existing in THIS world, as if I was more virtuous for it than someone seemingly unaware of how bad things are.
    Fuck that shit though. All being miserable does is make you small, powerless, and unpleasant. I didn’t learn it on my own though, I have Animal Collective’s music and wellbutrin to thank for that.
    Even so, now that I’m on the other side more often than not I can see that it’s simply undeniable that misery is an illness that you must always be treating. Your value to yourself, your community, and collective society as a whole is only diminished when you’re miserable.

    I think you're getting the job done just fine with that dish soap (and I bet it smells amazing)- but I also have a moldy bathroom like your sister(no fan+humidish climate) and my way of dealing with cleaning the shower (well the bathroom as a whole) is clean all the bathroom surfaces first (including scrubbing the walls and ceiling- my bathroom is teeny and has a low ceiling), then the toilet, the floor (Swiffer), THEN- clean the shower while I'm in it, getting clean myself (since I'm probably grungy after cleaning the rest of the bathroom). I turn on the spray so the hot water gets some steam going to loosen up anything, then I scrub down the shower while I condition my hair. I used to clean my shower with clothes on and it was a pain in the ass for me- trying to rinse different parts while not getting sprayed myself. This has worked much better, hope this helps someone who also hates doing their shower.

      Well I mean it is so all-encompassing and influential at the deepest level of society that ignoring it is ignoring reality. Capitalism colours the words we use in our day-to-day interactions, it changes our perception of time, relationships, people, and goals. To pretend it isn't a factor in just about every issue in the world is honestly just false.

    • @xXx_Regulus_xXx
      @xXx_Regulus_xXx 4 месяца назад +16

      @@Cobalt985I dunno, critiques of capitalism as being the only framework that causes hardship or require industriousness seem myopic. people have been toiling since long before money or even barter were an idea in someone's head. work or starve is the natural order for all life, and while your boss wouldn't invent a concept like limiting work to 40 hours per week if it didn't already exist, I don't think people framing the problem this way have the solution.

    • @PartTimePterodactyl
      @PartTimePterodactyl 4 месяца назад +6

      @@xXx_Regulus_xXxfor me I get frustrated with the conclusion of these statements. Okay, let’s accept the premise that capitalism is to blame for all of modern woes, what next? It isn’t simply enough to state a problem because that doesn’t lead to change. This thinking creates a sense of lack of autonomy that makes it difficult for people to enable themselves to make decisions. Even if the autonomy is constrained, we need to feel some sense of ownership over ourselves and communities (in terms of who we are and what we contribute), otherwise the descent into nihilism is far too easy.
      I simply have no time for the shorthand ‘capitalism causes all problems’ without exploring what that means to the person saying it. I find so many arguments to be differences in people stating what the world is vs. what the world should be and making no distinction between the two.

    As someone who’s been disabled for the better (worse) part of 6 years now, most people aren’t lazy, but they’re overworked physically and mentally and need a break. I haven’t “worked” a job. That was fine for a year or so after having gone gas pedal down non-stop from 15-20 (and really go-go from 6-20) to get into a good university and then graduate from said university. I needed the break. I didn’t want to do anything. That is absolutely seen as lazy. But after some time, I wanted to work, to produce for humanity, to “be useful.”
    Humans aren’t meant to produce like this. Endlessly growing production that’s often not tangible and far off. We’re supposed to produce with our hands, god dammit. “It feels good to make things” - some league character’s quote 100%, but I don’t remember who.

    tip from a hotel housekeeper: dish soap is great for glass showers but with titling or vinyl like this, it's better to use a bleach-based cleaner. When I'm at home and cleaning, i use an all purpose spray on nearly everything and then go in with diluted bleach as-needed. (vinegar also works but i prefer bleach) I also would have used a janitorial rag (or an old washcloth) on all that detailing. You can take your index finger and trace all those corners, something a sponge can't really do. I also just soak my shower curtain in the tub (i'd use a storage container if i had a shower like this) with hot water and bleach, then re hang it to let it air dry. They repel water so taking them out of a washer usually makes a huge mess even after a spin dry.

    Never seen one of your videos but even just reading through the comments has really helped. I’m sick right now and been struggling for like 4 years to do anything with my life. I’m supposed to graduate this year but I can’t now, and I have no idea how I’m gonna support myself and move out.

    I am very drawn to narratives about how I can “improve myself”, and it’s been to my detriment. Much of my motivation comes from the anxiety around not reaching a certain state of improvement, and I am constantly thinking about the future of myself and the world, I’m never in the present. I definitely think each of us has a lot of good we can be doing for ourselves and others. I just want to point out that the concept of improvement is so loaded now that it can trap people. Perhaps we can find better language around doing good, over time.

    I was super stressed about all I had to do today. I don’t know why but watching you clean helped me.

    this is amazing thank you for the cleaning monologue video. also i wanted to share!! the whole perspective about how cleaning or zoning out on games can be meditative is true but its called "transcendental meditation" if you want to dive into that rabbit hole. Im sorry for whatever is occurring in your life that is hurting your heart and i hope you are able to find solace through and after. im glad that cleaning the bathroom helped you process those events. keep being you!
