This was my first NFL game. I took my dad. We had so much crap talking to us as we walked to the stadium from the parking lot. We wore our Panthers jerseys but refused to talk crap back, because of obvious reasons. We had seats right behind the Panthers bench. Everybody behind the benches had to stand to see the action. Good ol Qualcomm 😆 Anyway, I knew my Panthers had to win that game. I couldn't go 0-1 on my first NFL experience. I knew Delhomme would throw the winning TD on the final play. That set the tone for a magical season, until they choked to Arizona in the playoffs. I still reminisce and cherish the memories from that day and that season.
Delhomme was underrated IMO, he was clutch and had one of the best pump fakes I’ve seen from any qb, not just this play either. The Tommy John surgery killed his arm
From 04-10 The Chargers & The Panthers were 2 of the most disappointing teams in the NFL they both had so much potential but always folded in big games
I’m a Steelers fan, but I always tuned in to watch the Panthers during this time, loved the Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad duo, Delhomme was a hot shot gunslinger, and Jon Beason was one of my favorite defensive players in the league at the time.
The year the Chargers started 4-8 and made the playoffs after winning their final 4 games to finish 8-8 and the Broncos imploding late in the year going 8-5 to 8-8 and lead to the firing of Mike Shanahan.

This was the year the released his elite lead blocker lorenzo neal and even though he had a good year this was when lt started aging also and i think the marty years who were heavy run teams also caught up to him all those hits even though they had turner and sproles backing him up...
Underrated game on opening day that I'm sure a lot of folks forgot about. Two playoff bound teams going down to the wire. This was Jake's last year as a viable starter before he fell off. Regardless, he played well in crunch time without Steve Smith who if I remember correctly was hurt. John Fox's Panthers were a running team, but Jake was good enough to sometimes get the Panthers out of trouble.
This was the year when Vincent Jackson first really started reaching his potential, and quentin jammer was very underrated I'm his prime and the best name for a corner lmao former top 5 pick from Texas
Man that blocking group was just nasty. A couple of elite technicians with Gross and Kalil, then some maulers in Wharton, Vincent, and Otah. Plus King and Hoover busting heads.
His arm died. That Tommy John surgery only lasted so long. Those throws he was making in this game, eventually turned into ducks by the time we played Arizona in the playoffs.
Ehhh Jake couldnt have won that. The story of the game was Larry fitzeald and boldin exposing the Panthers corners. Lucas and Gamble were trash at this point in their careers
The Panthers were just a weird team that year. No winning record in 2006 or 2007, no winning record in 2009 or 2010 (worst record in the league that year), and yet, they get a first round bye in 2008 with Jake Delhomme at QB, who only threw 15 touchdowns in 16 starts One of the weirdest one-season wonders in recent years
Had Delhomme stayed healthy in 06 and 07, they would’ve made the playoffs in both years. They easily could’ve made the playoffs in 06 if he didn’t get hurt in those three games. The six seed in the NFC had the same record as them too. In 07, he was off to his best start of his career before he got injured and the Bucs took advantage in a weak division so I would’nt consider 2008 a weird year for the Panthers, it was a year where they finally got back on track before they fell off in 09
Did one of the commentators laugh at the final touchdown? Ive been a long time Panther fan. I live in SD and when I finally got a chance to see them it was awesome!!! Wish they had defense like this old line up now. Their old defense killed it! Kris Jenkins, Julius Peppers, Chris Gamble, Mike after dinner Minter! Dude, get out! The Chargers had the most blacked out games in NFL history when they were in San Diego. From 2011-2013, by far had that lead. If I can recall correctly, in 2012 they had every single game except one game blackedout. There was even a Monday Night Football game that had to be bought by local businesses or commercial sponsors. They had to buy tickets just so the game could be watched in the local markets. That's pretty fcuking bad! After 2010, fans just quit going to the stadiums. It was pretty pathetic.
