I often watch quite a few GX channels in order to avoid copying anyone’s content and I’m starting to realize your video style. Very original approach, calming commentary, and easy to understand. Great channel brother.
Another reason for the tire on the rear door, from what I heard from Aussie market, is the space under the floor where we have the tire is an extended fuel tank for those who actually need the extended range.
Yeah- Personally, I think it was silly to remove the spare from the back hatch. USD market should have kept the spare fuel tank and the spare on the back hatch. But w/the spare on the rear hatch, it doesn't LOOK "luxury". Silly. LOL
@@TropicalMint808 Meh- it's only about 10 gallons I think. Handy for sure. But the long range tank available double's our range. Albeit at a cost. The kit is over $2k.
I enjoyed having that swing out door on my 06 CR-V and love it in my 09 GX470! You are very well spoken, sir! Keep up the great job! Thanks for the videos!
After using it for a while, I prefer the barn door method. It's so much quicker, easier, and allows one of my kids to jump in the right hand third row seat that we usually have up. That gives them 2 avenues of ingress/egress. Granted, they could do that with a lift gate, but it's quicker with the side opener. It doesn't bump my head either, when parked on an incline.
I stumbled across your channel because I bought my first 4 runner(new) in May. I find your videos very informative. I DO like the GX a LOT, mabe someday. I like the fact that you use your truck, it kills me to see yours so dirty 😀, I can never do that, that's just me. I look forward to seeing more of your videos, be safe.
I currently drive a 2005 Grand Vitara, a small body on frame SUV. It also has a side swinging rear door with the spare. I actually prefer a side swinging door, as I am short and find the rear doors on newer SUVs to be a little hard to reach to pull down. Yeah, I know that many trims have an automatic door. I do, however, really like body on frame SUVs.
I like it i think it’s faster to open and those hatch styles wear out eventually. Also it’s a great use of space and easily accessible tools. Open the door boom jack stuff there without having to take the back end of the vehicle apart first. Plus there’s a lot of cool after market tables out there for them too which you couldn’t use with hatch
Do you think the hinge and door check and all remain the same strength as the version with tire? Therefore still strong enough to bear the weight of an after market carrier.
I looked at buying a Lexus GX because the door reminded me of my grandpa's station wagon, but now the spare tire placement sealed it. Thanks for the explanation.
This is one of the reasons I have a 4R. The door makes a great shelter when tailgating. It also makes it easier to carry long items like pipes or ladders. Spare tires can go on the roof.
I have an '05 , a primary reason was the swing out door . I hate banging my head on the lift doors . Like most vehicles ,they're not designed for anyone over 6' . I do like the lx with the spilt tail gate ,but it is larger overall .
I can keep my dog from jumping out easier with a swing gate, not that she does before i let her but i like idea of having that control tho. One of the features that brings me to the gx over 4r limited actually.
hello my friend, recently I bought a techometer thru online site with GPS, Speedometer, Slope meter, Coordinates display , Time, Compass especially I like the altitude display, like when I go to South Lake Tahoe it shows 7200meter .......! Thought you may need it in the desert , only $30~$40 m60 Slope display unit ! another thing..........it seems the cloud in the sky don't move .........ha....ha....!
What's the highest tire profile you can get on a 2022 GX 460 without any lift and no rubbing? I'm thinking about 265/65/R18 nothing crazy lol. Thank you
Not sure how much diesel your Prado’s hold but here in Australia 🇦🇺 when the Prado comes with the spare tires on the rear door like that we get extra fuel carrying ability up to 150 litres in the US that would be about 32 gallons on board.
Are those the Victory 4x4 sliders? How was the experience with them? I read a lot of complaints about their products not bolting up without modificaiton.
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I won't be ordering anything from Victory after these videos! I think I'm going with the Metaltech sliders and Asfir skid plates. I don't like any of the current bumper options.
Great video...my friends refer to my GX460 as a "Hurse" because of the rear door design . LOL!! I also thought that the door was designed this way because of the weight and the pistons used to support lift style doors would not be sufficient ???? However, I can now share with my friends the facts...Thanks!
departure angle is measured from where rear tire touches the road then towards an upward rear angle... you'll hit the rear plastic bumper before you get anywhere near a door mounted carrier 😃
Easier to access the roof and the interior of the car. Same reason no cars have gullwing doors. Took me a few weeks to appreciate, but it is worth it! Not a good enough reason to pass on such an excellent vehicle. :D

Wow, excellent information 👏 thank you 😊 💓
Dang man I'd like some more range!! same complaint with our other swing rear door vehicle, a 2012 rav4 v6. tiny gas tank!

Every SUV should be like this. My 01 Montero has a door like that and it’s so much more practical.

Might be to carrie extra weight of trunk mounted tire and stayed that way on lexus maybe for budget purpose but i might be wrong
I do wish it opened the other way. Otherwise, I like it better than a hatch
I like the barn door. Tall people certified. Don’t have to worry about head trauma! 😃
100% agree. At 6’6”, couldn’t be more true for me.

You know what sucks is they use thinner sheet metal, so if you decide to mount a tire on your door they tend to fatigue out
that is 😢... what did you end up doing about your DV8 bumper issues?
Not sure how much diesel your Prado’s hold but here in Australia 🇦🇺 when the Prado comes with the spare tires on the rear door like that we get extra fuel carrying ability up to 150 litres in the US that would be about 32 gallons on board.
We don't get diesel here in the USA. We get the 4.6L gas V8 only. Yes we are aware that other markets get a bigger tank 😃
My 1989 Isuzu Trooper had a swing out barn door with spare tire on it. Just another example.
those troopers were awesome... wish they still imported them to the 🇺🇸
if you have he spare tire on back door you would lose the lift glass. do the prados have roll down glass on the back?
I'm honestly not sure 😕

Yes. It's all about the spare tire access! 😃 ✌️
My driveway is a slant and I risk the door swings itself open if not held, always a cringe worthy moment that the hinge may break
Once I find the way to modify the door to open normaly and be practical, I will buy one.
The door is the only reason stoping me from buying it.
Spare tire on rear vs under is to increase departure angle not really ease of access
departure angle is measured from where rear tire touches the road then towards an upward rear angle... you'll hit the rear plastic bumper before you get anywhere near a door mounted carrier 😃
Too bad they did that hideous swing out. Deal breaker for me.

@Ryan-dc6lj how often are you accessing the roof? I've seen this hatch type dent many cars in parking lots when swinging open
