It is all true if you are not a vivid overlander and not driving out to the wilderness for several days. If your truck is the main driving vehicle and you are going out to the national forest or desert once in a while, you don't need none of that mentioned gear. Truth to tell I got this hype and was thinking about equipping my rig with all the stuff but lately I realized that I really don't need it )) I was thinking about getting a RTT because of convenience to setup a tent in a minute or two under the harsh conditions but... how often would I be traveling in such a condition that I'd have to sleep in a tent while it is miserable outside?)) If such a conditions would arise, I'd be sleeping inside of a GX. For a day or two trips , even if it will be a weakly trips, I don't want to carry around 150lbs on my roof for 5 days every day, just because I don't and will not bother myself taking it down every time after the trip. Till recently, I was thinking of getting an awning, but instead, I just bought a 10x10 pop-up gazebo, which is more practical and much much cheaper. I'm not planning to install a hitch, but use the portable version as you showed in your last video. Same with the air compressor, I will be using my regular air pump, which does the job just fine, not as fast but doable if suck a need happen. The only thing I need right now and I'm getting it this weekend, is a new set of tires, my GX came with 19" 55 and I'm going with 18" 65 original lexus rims. Was thinking of getting 17" 70 aftermarket, but as I'm not going outside as often, 18" 65 will work just fine for my trails. The only flow this GX has is its clearance. Definitely not enough for a decent off-roading, got my first scratch on the chin at category 4 trail recently, but it wasn't really bad, considering I did it on 19" 55 wheels)) I might do a 1" lift on front but not sure yet. I wish someone would come up with a detachable front bumper for temporary protection while exploring new trails around. I will install skid plates for sure and, possibly, the rock sliders sometime in the future. I will keep this GX as a street queen for as long as possible, no need to get any extra attention with the extra things done to it.

I do not have all of that "stuff" on my truck, but I would, if money were no object. What's wrong with being a, "poseur"? Hyprocritical AF for majority of Americans to talk about ANYBODY being, "poseurs". Americans are world famous for buying ish that they either do not need and/or cannot at all 'afford'. Having a $700+/monthly car payment is being a "poseur". Having a 6, 7, 8 year auto loan is being a, "poseur". If someone wants to buy a brand new Cadillac Escalade, have it painted neon pink.......with glitter, fill it with pennies, and bury it in their front yard...........what the hell difference does it make to me, you, or anybody else? I always thought the rear tire carrier was to increase the rear breakover angle AND because it's a helluva' lot less unpleasant to change a tire if your spare is hanging on the rear of the vehicle..........versus having to crawl under a vehicle.........especially in mud or if the ground is wet or on the side of a busy highway. Not to mention having to crawl BACK under the vehicle to mount your flat tire, if you're taking the flat with you. I have zero desire to sleep outdoors........but common-sense to me would be, I'd much rather sleep ON TOP of a vehicle, in order to give a predator (a bear, coyote, snake, etc.) a challenge, rather than sleep on the ground and make it super easy to be attacked. If someone is carrying a shovel, ax, etc., again, common sense would dictate that it's better to have it "mounted" than sliding all over the rear of the vehicle........and/or becoming a flying projectile INSIDE your own vehicle in an accident.

The timing of this video couldn't be better. Just a few hours ago, a dude got out of his 3rd Gen Tacoma TRD Pro riding on KO2s, complete with bright orange traction boards and shovel mounted on a spiffy black bed rack. After he went inside the store, I checked out his truck's rocker panels and lower rear bumper. Not a scratch. Bottom of the front bumper? Mint (OK, may be a couple of small rock chips). TRD skid plate? I could almost see my reflection. Traction boards? Must have been delivered by Amazon this morning.

This marketing of creating perceived needs of off roading has created a whole industry and a new revenue stream for automotive manufacturers. I used to drive my old 1971 Plymouth Satellite on dirt roads and slept in the back seat. Had water and a shovel in the truck and amazingly went to few out of the way places and had a great time. Then drove that same car to work...Had no money for specialized equipment . You have shown what a mostly stock vehicle can do with some careful driving.

Willys Overland was around 60 years ago! I do agree with most of what you said. I have a mild inch and a half Dobinsons lift on my 19 GX. Mainly for the increased payload when towing our Casita RV trailer. I also mounted 17 inch wheels from a 2008 GX so I could put 70 series tires on it. They are about an inch taller than stock and ride soooo much better than the low profile 60 series tires. With that combo I dont need to cut up the front bumper! The traction boards can be handy in sand. And of course a decent shovel. I added a rack as well to mainly mount a nice 270 degree awning. That piece of kit is awesome for desert shade and its super easy to set up and put away. I guess it depends on what you are doing with your rig whether you need any of this or not. I can also appreciate popping up a roof tent in 20 seconds vs messing around with a ground tent. I also have friends here in New Mexico that will go on 1 and 2 week long excursions living out of their trucks. Having a bed in the truck, fridge, water etc makes it more enjoyable. Do you NEED it, No, but if you have the money who am I to tell someone how to enjoy their money? By the way, I'm 57 and retired and can do anything I want.

If we didn't make it, we would have to do entire loop in reverse which would have made fuel a definite issue. We had piece of mind with extra fuel. This was my ONLY trip so far where extra fuel was truly needed. Alaska will be our next trip where it will be a real thing.

I agree bro, it’s just showing how much money they can give away to those companies either going into more debt or whatever. I generally agree. Disagree on maxtrax. I have used mine many times successfully, especially snow wheeling. I actually carry them in my Chevy Bolt in the winter and have used them twice to get myself out and also used them at the ski resort to get a Tesla Model S dual motor, 4Runner, and an AWD Sienna out after we got a massive dump one day and the parking lot was not plowed. If you are dealing with deep sand then they can certainly help. Its worth having them around. I did buy a hitch mounted carrier for my 33's on my GX and it sucked. I had it on for like 3 months before I resold it for what I bought it for. I got it because I ultimately planned on buying a LRA auxilary tank for towing long distances into the desert and needed the spare out from underneath.

The CVT used by Toyota or Lexus doesn't have a belt that can stretch, it uses a metal belt made of over 400 stamped metal plates that are pushed around the pullies, not pulled. The plates are held together by bands of flexible steel that constantly bend. If a steel band ever breaks, then the plates will all fall apart. The steel bands may suffer from old age, not from high torque. However, high torque may cause the surfaces of the coned shaped pullies to wear more rapidly leading to belt slippage. The wear and tear of the surface of the pullies may ultimately be reduced by having the launch gear. My C-HR did not come with a launch gear, so I "baby" my transmission by accelerating gently from a stop. My CVT will last longer and I get better fuel economy that way.

I've got a 2003 Volvo s60; 353K miles; I do oil changes whenever 'I feel like it' which is between 9K - 14K. The key is DRIVING YOUR CAR. If a car sits or you just take short trips- then you are inviting sludge. In this case- you gotta get that oil out of there earlier.. 5 or 6K. If you actually drive your car and maintain proper oil level- then you can go the full 10K. Just keep an eye on the dip stick with respect to how dirty the oil is. If you can't see the actual dip stick through the oil- get that oil out of there. I've got another Volvo; 181K miles- I change that oil more frequently because I don't drive it as much. That car oil is change at 5 - 7K intervals. Again; it sits a lot as it's my 'backup' vehicle so I have to adjust accordingly. Drive safe everybody.
