    in all steppe regions of the world. you this kind of washboards roads forming in the summer, the rest of the year is a muddy/clay. mess. They are a feature of many parts of Africa, Asia, Est Europe, and Australia. It is hard to describe even a 10 mile portions of such a road to someone who never experienced it. It is an ultimate test on how well a vehicle is buil, not only the suspension, or frame but all of it. I have seen fine cars with the bloody windshield wipers flying off, bumpers falling out, numerous sheered bolds on weird places, trim pieces, etc... . no vehicle can be subjected to this and expected to last like on other types of environment. When I see rock climbing. rigs with remote reservoir shocks, I laugh my ass off, reservoir shocks were developed. for long stretches of corrugated roads done at high speed.. The fact that those tokkiko shocks still do the job on this conditions.... amazing.
    Another famous of. type of road with similar challenges is the belgian pave, granite blocks shaped on to dirt with in time they get separated and sink .... it is part of automative testing grounds for road fatigue, but still found on some old streets in cities in Europe.

      @leeloo21231234 Excellent points! And thank you for your insight. Indeed our local "roads" are all about brutality... everything goes flying off... we pick up bumpers, tail lights, headlights, plastic bits... all sorts of vehicle parts off the road out here that flew off... the strangest stuff happens... and like you said it's hard to explain to those who say they "go offroading on the trails on the weekends" the difference between that and _living_ offroad every singe day... big difference in wear and tear... don't get me started on remote reservoir shocks being used for anything other than airborne desert racing, which nobody does, even out here _in_ the desert 😆

    Because of your vids I'm no longer considering "upgrading" the shocks on my GX.

      @@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I have a 2021 TRD PRO 4Runner. I just hit 105500 miles in 3 years. The only thing to break has been 3 FOX SHOCKS American made. I had a 2017 TRD OFF-ROAD 4Runner that I still regret selling. It had tokico shocks and you’re 10000% correct. Never had an issue. Sold it with 80K miles and started hunt for the “ Pro “. Mechanically it’s been stellar. Absolutely no squeaks rattles etc. Toyota did replace all 3 FOX shocks under warranty. I drove a new 460 right before the 550 came out and I loved how smooth it was. Toyota is having a lot of issues right now. Definitely sticking with older ones. Hopefully Toyota settles these issues.

    Thanks for the video! I have a 2016 GX. Just took it on a 6500 mile road trip. We spent most of our off roading time in Utah... Zero issues. Everything from the suspension to the Air conditioning. The car feels like i never went. I have Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015. I think they are perfect for a road trip centric AT tire. Almost no tire noise and a smooth ride. We did go out tryin to rock crawl. But we had some pretty gnarly rocks and lost of washboards, they did great. KO2s are legendary though

    I know lifts are your pet peeve but have you ever driven a GX with a lift for your use case? I live up a washboard dirt road too (Colorado) and I find that it is MUCH more smooth with the lift and new shocks. Perhaps it’s just the sidewall with the larger tires but I love it. I have no idea what the reliability will be compared to the Tokiko’s.

    • @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD
      @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD  21 день назад +3

      @dereksfoster99 Frankly, fat tires are the cure for washboards... anything with fat tires makes that air cushion bigger... lifting the GX460 will fit fatter tires but at the expense of that stock balance I adore... the GX550 seems to "fix" this by allowing for a fatter tire at stock 550 height... that's something very exciting about the 550 to me 😃

    • @chibbyylol
      @chibbyylol 21 день назад +1

      If anything it's mostly the new shocks and tires; the lift would raise center of gravity which could exacerbate the the wobbly-ness of washboard roads

      @scholotzkys395 21 день назад +2

      A very small lift with bigger shock bodies makes such a big difference… stock it just doesn’t have much uptravel in the front, and the shocks last a long time but they just aren’t big enough for that magic carpet ride on washboard

  • @vegasstang1
    @vegasstang1 21 день назад +2

    Washboard roads are typical in any desert road. The roads to Chaco Canyon in New Mexico are REALLY bad with washboard roads. Most people are driving 10 mph but I float on top of them doing 40 mph in my 80 series! You should mount 65 series tires. A little more sidewall is nice. And it'll fit in the spare location too.

    So informative as always, thanks. Question about the sunroof: thinking back, how often were you "actuating" the sunroof while running along the washboards? Point being, do you think the failure occurred with a mostly closed and static sunroof simply being shaken to death, or do you think opening/closing the mechanism while running along the washboard roads did the bracket in?

      @will53e thanks for your happy comment 😁 😀 😃 this thing was shaken to death because of the washboards (just like the sheared off hood striker).. Great question! I would like to run larger tires and have more clearance for off-roading adventures. Plus, to be honest, a 2” lift makes it a lot easier to work under when I’m changing fluids etc. It lets me not have to even jack up the truck. That’s only a tertiary reason though. Mainly, clearance for approach and departure angles without hacking up the front or rear bumpers or the side skirts. I just don’t really want to buy a new suspension when the stock one is so good. My GX only has 36k miles on it. It’s a 2022.

    It's so counter-intuitive to me that airing down on the washboard roads doesn't make a difference to the wear and tear on the rest ofthe vehicle. I do appreciate you explaining your experience with the desert usage!

    • @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD
      @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD  21 день назад +2

      @freezerlunik Airing down does NOT make for a more comfortable ride, that is keyboard offroader mythology. NORMAL/DOOR psi makes for the most comfortable ride. A fatter tire allows for MORE (not less) air... ie "airspring" which is why Jeeps with fat tires ride the best on washboards. Nobody "airs down" for a "smoother ride" around here. Fat tires fix the probelm. The GX550 gets way fatter tires than the 460 all while being at stock suspension geometry... that will mediate the washboards. Airing down is great for getting more traction, but it makes ride quality even worse on washboards. You ride on a cushion of air that dissipates through your sidewalls... the more air and the more sidewall the cushier the ride. Look at the fat tires on the Yamaha TW200 trail bike... or any ATV, etc 😉

    • @freezerlunik
      @freezerlunik 21 день назад

      @@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD i think you are right for your style of driving (60kph+?) bigger tire will have less rolling resistance on the washboard terrain, plus IMO a sidewall working to flex more while driving at speed will pick up a lot of heat from the kinetic energy of the impacts being absorbed.

      @1FiftyOverland That's keyboard offroader talk. Toyota doesn't put King or fox shocks on any of their Landcruisers or Landcruiser Prados or FJs or anything other than American sticker packages like "TRD Pro etc" Tokicos are absolutely top tier... they're not painted "neon red" so the masses don't get triggered lol... Most people have no idea what remote reservoirs are, or shock fade, and will never experience shock fade in their lifetime... remotes are only good for airborne desert racing where fade becomes an issue. Almost nobody does that in real life even out here in the desert where people actually can. Marketing and hype and neon has long infiltrated shock absorbers. When Toyota engineers make their best SUV (Landcruiser) they specify Tokico or KYB and that's not by accident 😉 Glad your F150 made it to 157k. But these Toyota's go to 1 million. And we are offroad daily, not occasionally, the use and results in this example speak volumes to the quality.

      @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD Keyboard offroad talk? Guarantee I drive my f150 harder offroad than you do your Lexus. I 100% guarantee I could get those tokico shocks to fade and blow, and not from jumping it at all.
      A few Toyotas have made it 1 million miles and you fan boys think that is every Toyota. The vast majority of Toyotas don't make it past 300,000 miles. Toyota fanboys are funny lol.

      @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD let's do a direct comparison, my f150 to your gx. Looks like you live in either the Nevada, Arizona, or California desert, which is only a few hr drive from me at the most.
