True, the whole car is a bit “outdated” but that’s the whole thing and what makes it reliable.
I agree for the most part. The interior and infotainment center could be updated without compromising reliability.
1 thing I hate are people that complain about fuel economy when they daily an off road rig…
You bought 2 generations before the last 460 and claim you paid luxury price? I doubt that. I bought a 2023 and it’s ages better inside, infotainment is current, ventilated seats are great. You bought a 7-year old car my friend, you got what you paid for, sorry.
I’m glad you love the GX it’s an awesome rig. But the entire platform is dated (that’s why they did a complete overhaul of it). If you compare any Model year GX460 to its competitors it’s not as luxurious. The 2023 is the nicest one but still not as nice as its competition. Look at any professional review and you will see the same feedback.
@@BackroadExploration I think that what you pay for when you buy Toyota products it is mainly quality and reliability, other brands give you more luxury features but they are always giving you problems. I extensively researched all those “professional” reviews for over a year and at first I could not wrap my head around paying such a premium for a gx460, but just compare depreciation rates, reliability scores, number of recalls on well established platforms like Silverado, GMC, F150 and Ram… they are miles behind Toyota and that’s when my decision got clearer and clearer with time. Me, I rather sacrifice gadgets and gimmicks for peace of mind when I’m in the middle of nowhere, one thing I agree with you, is that if you are not off-roading there are better options out there, even under Toyota’s umbrella ( BTW, my 2023 has remote start)
@marcosalejandrolirag.7364 no doubt Toyota holds the best reliability for sure. But seems to me that over the course of like 10 years where basically nothing changed on the platform they could have done some more upgrades to the dated systems and for sure should always have remote start. You will love the 23 it’s the perfect solution to me having updates and the awesome drivetrain. Make sure to checkout my other video on all the things I love .
I think if you really want to get the Gx you gotta choose your battles , you don’t get in the Gx and blast it’s interior it’s an off roader, you get into it for its under pinnings and the backbones of a beast that it is ! You want nice interior get into Acura , Mercedes , bmw etc and have fun spending tons of $$$ in maintenance
Certainly have to choose your battles with any rig. But Lexus Charges premium pricing for a less than premium interior. Which is why I say if you don’t plan to tow or off-road you will likely be happier with a different rig.
I get it but .. I have a '22 and the interior feels better than an Audi I had, it has a more modern ICE system, has remote start, real wood on the wheel, dash, and doors. Approach and departure angles are bad, no question. Fuel economy isn't great, but I can manage 18-19mpg if I'm trying for it, but I didn't get it for economy vs. ability and overall design for resilience.
Thanks for sharing, I have 2014 gx , same color, and my screen freezes, it’s really sucks , lates model gx460 they changed whole dash and screen and added apple play , looks much modern but it’s only on 2022 and 2023 I think
Right. They updated for the last out going year. Much nicer.
Nice pair of impressions Jared. Lifestyle Overland just did a review of his impression on the GX550 a couple days ago. That one looks pretty sweet with a lot of things improved. If I ever have to replace my 2016 4Runner, I might look that direction. However I'm only 63,000 miles in so it might be a while.
The new GX looks fantastic and addresses almost all of my issues with the 460. I’m hopeful they end up being as good reliability wise. I could see one on our garage in the future after they have worked the kinks out and come down a bit in price on the used market.
@@BackroadExploration true, but I guess the target demographic who buys these really don’t care about fancy cameras and what not, but yeah it’s dated, all of it, and hence why we love it hahaha
I own 2017 with sport pkg. Infotainment does suck. Would love buttons for fan speed. Having said that you can add andoid auto and carplay with Beatsonic module to update it. But with GX550 better pray screen doesn't break because it'll be $10k+ to replace it I don't really offroad so oem bumpers don't really matter to me
I should have added beat sonic. I added the phone mount that had a similar install as bestsonic and not enough foresight to do it at the same time.
I purchased my wife a 2017 4runner SR 5 last year. I have to say I love it. But, I like clunky things. The screen on the 4runner basically only runs the audio/hands free phone. Heat, A/C controls are all manual knobs, which I like a lot better than screen time. We had a 2014 Cherokee and I hated to have to go to the screen to make things work in the vehicle that would be much easier to use a knob and or slide control. It did come with remote start though....
Thanks for the video! George.
I’d prefer the knobs and dials. Especially vs the mixture
Thanks for sharing.
For me, I wish there was an option to not* have a sunroof, I just wish I had more head room. 2014+ 4Runners in Canada all come with sunroofs. I’ll just get an xterra or FJ in the meantime.
Does the sunroof take more space? Seems likes it’s ingress. But it is noisier for sure.
I wanted to ask, how tall is your GX in inches? The reason being is that I also want to do a similar setup to what you have, but I want to make sure it'll fit in my 80" tall garage
It’s almost exactly 80inches. Does look to be like 79 1/2
I'm planning to not do the roof rack, so it'll probably be around 77-78 inches I'm assuming?
its real wood dude, from the home screen on the touchscreen, just tap climate to go to the climate menu.. you dont have to do analog to digital. Infotainment will always be dated.
You are right. It is real. But looks and feels fake/cheap and doesn’t improve the vehicle IMO. When mine starts it loads the NAV screen perhaps that’s something I can adjust in settings. So to get to climate I have to click climate or home analog then use the screen to adjust. Perhaps there’s another way to it. But that just goes to show how clunky it is.
Great video!
I currently own both a 2011 and a 2016 GX460.
I do have one question though...
When you said:
"The entire interior of this is a nice vehicle, don't get me wrong, like I came from a Jeep Wrangler. It is much nicer that my Jeep Wrangler JK"
Were you trying to tell us that you were "just kidding" when you said JK, or were you just referring to the model of your Wrangeler? 🤔
I was coming from a JK model Wrangler. The JK is the older model. The JL is the current edition. The GX is much nicer than the JK.
i'd look into a tune. they can increase mpg, torque and hp.
I’ll have to do some research. My experience with tunes limited) is in the diesel space which seems to help with what you mentioned but reduced reliability.
What other luxury SUV 7 seater would you recommend with the understanding that you won’t be doing any off road driving with the Toyota reliability? I can’t think of any …. 😭
No doubt Toyota leads in reliability. It depends on what your goals and expectations are? Most people don’t keep cars for extended periods. If you want a car that can run 100-175k miles most brands will get you there with little to no big issues. If you want to go beyond that then I’d stick to a Lexus or Toyota. LTZ Tahoe’s and Higher trim Level expeditions are as nice as Lexus SUVs and will get you in that range mileage wise with little to no real issues
If you just need 7 seats and no offroading you could look at something like a newer Honda Pilot Elite/Acura MDX or the Grand Highlander/Lexus TX. Unibody but have the bells and whistles with better fuel economy.
@dav31078 this!
Sounds like you didn’t do your research if these are ‘reasons’ nit to buy.
I did buy. But these might be a reason others may not want to. Which is the purpose of the video.
You complain about luxury aspects of your GX. Why then did you not go with an LX? Did you even test one? My 2011 LX seems like it would have suited you better. And I have 33’s also, and get over 15 mpg combined with the 5.7L. I test drove the GX and do not think Lexus was aiming at luxury for that particular model. As for off road in the LX, elephant hill was not a problem, although I wish I had a spotter. Like they used to say in the Army, “Don’t bitch, transfer”.
The LX is awesome. It and the Land Cruiser were out of my price range. The 5.7 is such an awesome engine.
Please go buy a BMW, take it offroad and pay an arm and legs for oil change and maintenance
It'll cost you a few bucks but you can upgrade to apple car play
Do you have a system you like?
Can you?
@ClaudiaMartinez-fi5me yes it requires an aftermarket accessory. Beat Sonic is the most popular. www.beatsonicusa.com/lgvifcb4.html
Remote start is a completely unnecessary feature that will leave you stranded when it breaks.
I’ve never disagreed with a comment more.
Imo, the clearance issues make this not an off-road vehicle. It’s like the Grand Cherokee. They pretend it carries its off-road heritage, but it just clearly wasn’t the priority in the design.
It for sure was not a priority in the design. However you can make very capable just takes some modifications. More than some vehicles less than others.
Not an off road vehicle? Tell that to the Jeep guys I regularly rescue in my GX
