I like how Kyde was worried about what the corner of the bag touches, but then puts her fork right on the table before using it to eat hahaha.
Steve Healt I thought the same thing!
I only have so much time before I have to go to bed and get up for work again. I was in the middle of watching a Jackie Chan movie until I saw your upload. Jackie Chan can wait.
the "modern" houses in the water village was built by the government for the ones that lost their homes in a major fire few years back. that's why all of it looks the same instead of random.
Ambuyat is a national dish for Bruneians and one of the most popular food in the country.... also people has different ways of making the sauce to their liking...
Asked my mother about the sauce. the sauce you were given was definitely badly made one. I could not let go of what your significant other said sooo i investigate it myself to be sure.. D:
its a national dish for sure but it does NOT necessarily have to be POPULAR. ambuyat is definitely like durian. theres an equal amount of love-hate on the food, even with the locals. nda jua ramai orang suka, half-half kaliah, ada jua yang inda suka hahahah
Popular does not mean statistic SERATUS PERATUS pasti dan inda jua jatuh ke bawah EMPAT PULUH PERATUS. Of course memang ada urg inda suka. mustahil semua urang suka walaupun urang kitani. urg mana pikir "POPULAR is 100%"" ambuyat is a yes popular dish definitely to be compared of popularity among OTHER neighboring countries. Yes, ambuyat ukan saja exclusive untuk Brunei sedangkan jiran kitani pun ada similarty tapi ambuyat memang category to be one of the popular local cuisine dalam negara kitani.
The modern housing on water village are built by the government for those residents who has lost their home to fire. They are always offered housing on land but some have grown up for generations in Kg Ayer, so they are very much attached to it. So to respect their wishes, those houses are built big with modern facilities like plumbing. A normal house usually has at least 3 or more families because in Brunei, we proper to live together. Also some people think that those who lived in Kg Ayer has lower income while in fact most of them own at least a car too. Some even has their own land where they built houses to be rent out.

Kyde and Eric Taiwan was awesome.
I shed a tear watching this because I grew up on Durian.
+jwongcha I'd be crying too if I ate durian all the time as a child. Hahaha. -E
I enjoy the fact that you both are so respectful of all the novelties you came across.
Thanks! It just seems to be a natural way to behave! -E
Thank you for posting
That's pretty cool how the community on the water even had a Takraw court. I never even heard about that sport until this video. They are pretty talented!
I couldn't hit play fast enough! Yes, score! Perfect way to end my Thursday!
Another great video! Trying the local food is always something we love to do when we travel, I struggled with stinky tofu!
its so cool to see you in Brunei haha hope you enjoyed your time here!
haha..realy enjoyed watching your video Kyde and Eric..thank you for visiting our country.
Boat ride looked fuuuun. Waterfront views super nice and interesting 👌 what a fascinating place
great video guys!!!!!
Thanks! -E
That sago ambuyat dish is exactly how we made glue for art class when I was in school, back in Malaysia. Not that we didn't have glue that came in a bottle that we could get in stores, but i guess it was fun to see our mums cook it over the stove and being able to play with the goo after that!
By the way, that "fruit" was probably what they call 'Tempoyak' which is fermented durian..... so not only was it durian, a fruit that you dislike, it was also the fermented version of it!
cool second part of Borneo
Cool vid E n K. Thanks for experiencing Brunei
Thanks! We really enjoyed it! -E
this was awesome...!!!❤❤❤
The salad looks like "Rojak". We have that in Malaysia. It has cucumber, jicama, and a fried dough and egg with peanut sauce
just to let you guys know, yes the houses built in kampong ayer would be in devastation if we were to be hit by a typhoon, but no, fortunately Brunei dsnt get hit by an actual typhoon, thats why its pretty much safe to live there.
💯 On the music situation, I thought I would be the same way but Can still appreciate new Generations of metal coming up 😂❤
Remo Drive is a good band. Thanks for the recommendation. I enjoyed listening to the song and their video fits it perfectly.
Not having read all the comments, it seems to me that building out on water avoids some sort of land tax. That would explain the modern houses arriving to create an elite area.
thank for the visit my country kyde and eric....
Thank you! We had a wonderful time! -E
I should bring you all place,i like all your video...2 thumb up
my family is from Malaysia originally and I totally loved watching you guys seeing these things for the first time. Lots of similarities in the region, I guess. Especially all of the food and drink. FEN is actually F and N, which is a local brand that makes sodas, a local Coca Cola, if you will. I never realised how weird their branding was until you misread it!
Man your videos just make me wanna run away to these places!
Do it!
that giant muffin is really for praying actually. those for eating taste sweet. we called them 'huat kueh" - prosperity cake
If I understand correctly, when reading the Koran out loud for a worship oriented service, you basically sing the verses. When I attended the local Sufi mosque for a wedding they did something like that. The adhan (call to prayer) is in the same style. So a Koran reading competition is probably a bunch of dudes giving their musical interpretation of the verses. I have been in a synagogue for ceremonies a few times and a dude called the cantor sings verses from the Torah so there's a thread of religious text as song lyrics going on in the Abrahamic tradition.
Eric you and Kyde need to schedule a weekend trip to visit the Showa National Park during the Cherry Blossoms festival. The park is at Tachikawa City only a 20 min train ride from Tokyo. It is well worth the trip to see the park and city, they have 2 lakes with boats you can rent and the park has over 2 million flowers. the city also has many nice/clean rooms to rent. The park is about a 8 min walk from the train station.
Interestingly the giant muffin looks like/reminds me of chinese vegetarian cakes that are used for praying/offerings and brings you luck and prosperity.
The neighborhood on stilts was amazing! I wouldn't last a day, because 1) I'm a klutz, 2) I am terrified of water and 3) I can't swim. But I would love to see the inside of these houses and learn how they were built and how the people live!
I was that poor kid you were talkin bout! Thanks for that!
Awh, I've never tasted beef jerky... but I want some of that goo! Kinda looks like when glue paste starts to harden.
According to Wikipedia: In 1910, the 61st United States Congress enacted a new law which raised the overall building height limit to 130 feet (40 m), but restricted building heights to the width of the adjacent street or avenue plus 20 feet (6.1 m); thus, a building facing a 90-foot (27 m)-wide street could be only 110 feet (34 m) tall.
You guys just got someone to show you how to add chilli sauce!! You just keep adding till it tastes right !!
Hypothetical Kyde and her excitement.
49:10 Woah, I'm not sure how spicy that sauce was, but it sure made Eric turn bright red!
Heh, I noticed that too. It's the camera having trouble adapting to the weird yellow light in the room. -E
Sending hellos from Toronto
Aga Prochonska woo another fellow Canadian! I'm sending my hello from Ottawa XD
Also, the pink in the ABC is usually rose syrup. 😊
The dipping sauce that comes with Ambuyat was probably added with "Tempoyak" a fermented Durian... which i personally don't like...
35:00 Darn you two for making me hungry again, even though I ate a little bit ago. (Frozen enchilada thing. It was "meh".) That soup looks really good. And I don't even like soup very much!
Have you guys tried actual bird's nest soup? It's a soup made of swiftlet's nest. You'd think their nest would just be made out of twigs, straws and such (the usual materials in a bird's nest), but a swiftlet's nest is actually made out of their own saliva. Just pure saliva, if I'm not mistaken, that hardens. It's absolutely fascinating. Bird's nest soup is a delicacy in many parts of Asia. I haven't tried it myself (just the fake powder kind that you mix with water and bring to a boil), but maybe a swiftlet's saliva smells like nail polish and that was what Kyde was smelling?
We went somewhere that harvests it, but didn't try it. Dunno how appetizing it sounds. Haha. -E
The best Bird's Nest comes from Borneo.
Hi guys! You both seem absolutely fearless & confident in your travels. Does anything about traveling to a new place make you nervous at all?
Just come across to the air BnB Website and there is an accommodation that offer visitors to stay at their house and experience cultural activities and food at Kampung Ayer...but price might be a bit on the high side.
That would be a cool experience! -E
So good! Loved the water village ....I'm not sure how I feel about the American track homes you found in the water village. The older looking houses were so unique so it makes me a little sad to see the cookie cutter type houses. If all the unique houses switched over to the track home model homes it would be like Pleasantville on stilts....
Jennifer Thomas they’re built for the people who lost their homes due to fire by the government
I agree with kyde that it's much more interesting to walk through that water town and experiencing the grits. But I also agree with Eric, that it's not for our entertainment and tourism. They are allowed to upgrade their quality of life and modernize. As much as exploring their neighborhood is interesting they are a society that is allowed to have at least stable housing. Cookie cutter sucks though. But good on them for modernizing and not feeling like their giving up their past. Big fan, take care.
I was just saying to a friend I have an odd palate- I occasionally make dishes that are basically tasteless goo. Like cream of wheat is an occasional delicacy for me. I have no clue why. Anyway apparently I will have to try Ambuyat. Tasteless goo with all the fixins.
Wikipedia says its from the sago palm and is akin to tapioca.
greetings form brunei...i sub
Thank you!!
You might like the band Twin Peaks. They're great
You're right about us not getting much tourists.
Mike Harris Because Brunei Darussalam is not expose to the world. Why? Guess you might as well ask the travel agency itself out of curiousity😁😁
Have you guys visited the late Sultan Home? The father of the current Sultan. its close with "Kampong Ayer". It is Historical place as Before the independence day and before Oil was found in Brunei the place used to be a place for the Royal to live most of them live their life there. They still keep the late Sultan home, its historical.
We didn't visit! Next time! -E
nice trip and we learn allways new words from Eric (you should patent it)
I would love to visit the Water village. In fact the whole country seems interesting. One question Eric. How many fruits did Kyde get for a dollar?
I was looking up durian (for some reason) and found that one fruit has almost 900 calories alone. It also has 75%+ fiber, potassium, vitamin b-6, and 197% vitamin C. And has a high fat content. That's one whacked out fruit.
that red sos u said is called sambal.
Really agree with Kyde 24:20 I like the old way original way that's why u want to go there!!!! Also wrong of that guy on the boat at the start to say 4 US dollars then 10? Bit cheeky!!!!! 😙
Well, to be fair those people shouldn't decide on their living conditions based on being a tourist attraction, hahaha. -E
Kyde and Eric 😁
Hey i have some questions.
1. Is there a country you really want to visit but never got a chance too?
2.If you ever travel to Europe which countries would you want to visit the most?
3. If you ever travel to the South/Central America which countries would you like to see/explore the most?
4. When you leave Japan, what is the one thing you will miss the most about it?
Thanks for the questions! I just answered them in an endcard that will be in the next "Kyde in America" video! -E
That 'drink' is definitely like halo-halo in the Philippines! "...including boiled sweet beans, coconut, sago, gulaman (agar jelly), tubers and fruits"
The locals would bite the bottom corner then squeeze the content to the bowl.
That soft drink was not FEN but F & N brand (Fraser and Neave), the same company that makes the 100Plus sports drink. That e was just an alternate ampersand.
It's called Bandar Seri Begawan
I´ve been to north korea in the past for 2 whole monts because i wrote my graduation paper on the development of their culture in terms of political, social and economical isolation. I´ve been fascinated by that country ever since i´ve read my first book about it. I did get some kind of special treatment when it came down to entry into the country and staying there because i did write a letter specifically to the goverment of the dprk asking for permission to visit their "beautiful" country, that is how i worded it to make myself more appealing to them, and i would describe my visit as sitting on a barrel of gunpowder that could go off at the tiniest of motions. Not neccesarily the most pleasent feeling to have for 2 months. A trip to north korea is definitely not worth, purely from a tourist(y) point of view. You basicially touched on some negative aspects of it, as for example the money goes 100% to the ruling party and is distributed fairly unfairly :^}. Plus, especially as americans you will be patronized as fuck basically all tourist stuff you can do in most places revolves around and i quote " the defeat of the imperialistic american swines by the hands of the mighty goverment of the dprk". During my visit i had to endure countless occasions where my superior was explaining to regular north koreans how i as a german was looking at north korea for educational guidance and all that jazz. well anyways you will have a shitty time as americans all your footage will be looked at and probably deleted and kim jong un is a fat manchild. im writing myself into a tyrade ill stop now.
Great Video btw :^} greetings from space
Futurama references !!
I think I agree with eric at 24:00 because while 'chaos' is entertaining for TOURISTS, townhouses and properly built buildings are better for those actually LIVING THEIR LIVES THERE.
Actually the yellow and three red dots muffin is use for chinese praying. And if u want to come brunei again. You guys can find me. 😊
This past summer was the first time I came into contact with a Durian. I thought I had a pretty strong stomach up until that point. Man it came out of nowhere and slapped me in the face! I'm surprised the spicy sauce didn't have more of a stronger smell. o-o
That damn water village makes me wana go to places like hongkong ect soo bad. just have a lazy day out on a longboat, then walk the plank! to get somthin to eat lol
bowl of goo made me queezy...
looks like dielectric grease.
You have to try "Belacan"
I caught onto that spoiler :D
ohhh I didn't! Do tell? All I got was they were there for a while? The minute he said that I was replaying it. X-D
So in some video a very long time ago you talked about how english speakers in Japan sometimes take on a weird accent while speaking english. I've noticed that you, Eric, have recently picked that up in your endcards and especially in the hitchhiking videos. But I think you also discussed that you both would never do that since you speak to each other so often. Bring back Kyde lol!
+MilesMommy 2010 Haha, when I was hitchhiking for 5 weeks the only time I spoke English was to the camera. Now that Kyde has been in America for a couple months I've mostly been using Japanese, I guess it screws up your brain. It's totally not a conscious thing. -E

around 34:00 I was eating a cookie while you learned to mix the food then I blew my room temp cookie like it was hot noodles.
43:50 Mr. Brown Coffee: a Taiwanese brand!
+CNVideos BRROOOOOOOOWWWWN!
I noticed at 37:30 that Kyde responded to his question with "America". I'm assuming he was asking where you are from. Is that what you typically say when people ask or do you ever say Japan?
+metalmikow It's far less complicated to just say we are from The States if it's someone we will be talking to for just a minute or two. -E
Thanks for talking about Remo Drive! They're from where I live in Minnesota! I've never heard of them before but I'll listen to them now! Maybe I can go to one of their shows. Great video, excited to see more of Brunei!
Nice! If you get to see them I'm jealous! -E
Hughes Memorial Tower is the tallest in dc by like 10 stories
You guys really went in depth in everything did you actually have any time to appreciate anything? It seems like you were vlogging most of the time.
Haha, we are good at taking out time, don't worry. -E
soto is the best food!
The bowl of Aminah - pretty sure Steve McQueen fought something like that in the 1950's
Is it just me or is there a lot of hate in this comment section? I loved the video, looking forward to the next one 😊
Haha, is there? It hasn't been too crazy I don't think. Maybe I'm just callous to mad people on the internet, hahaha. Thanks, glad you enjoyed! Thanks for the kind comment! -E
What's in the box?
Anw the bread look like thingy in your breakfast is a fritter
AN HOUR YASSSSS xD
hahaha so you guys DID try the ambuyat i suggested hahaha how i wish id explain to you guys more about it haha. hope to hear your replies! btw my friend sent me this link (your channel) so weird he came across this haha. oh man you guys made it to my home town at belait :"). haha now i know why you guys came back to my hotel because you guys went to belait! hope to hear a reply from you guys!
-Fai from Brunei
Haha, it's so awesome you found these videos. Did you friend pass the link along because we showed the hotel you worked at? The ambuyat was....an interesting experience. Hahahaha. -E
Yep durian... chilies, shrimp paste and durian.
That handle on the cup seems a bit irrelevant, doesn't it? Surely you can just hold it around the sides, like any normal cup :P I mean, its kind fancy, but why?!
Oh 43:30, the red dots are because south asians believe that food should not be completely white (but rice?) as that is for the dead. So they add red dots because red is a good colour, btw that muffin is often offered at graves and ghost festivals - not many asians purchase them for dietary purposes. They are like the western equivalent of ceremonial bouquets.
Oh wow, I've never heard of that before, but it explains so much! -E
Lmao pans camera to himself "I have nipples" 😂
It's true. -E
Do you guys have a PO box for fans to send mail to?
No, unfortunately not. Thanks for thinking of us, though! -E
Its (sil-ma-rill) from Tolkien The silmarillion
Very interesting seeing the suburban house styles in that water town. My feeling is that it's great, it's not meant to be a historical landmark it's meant to be a comfortable place to live for real citizens. If the rickety bridges and old style houses (with all of their apparent fire hazards) aren't safe enough for the families and their children, why shouldn't they build modern homes there?
38:37 Mega Frat House... BSB 4 life!!!
ABC is the acronym for Air Batu Campur, "mixed ice."
It's Qur'an reciting competition where the winner is the one who has the most beautiful voice reciting the Qur'an and very well memorizing it with a clear and correct pronunciation. This kind of competition is every where in the Islamic world. Cool vid! :)
Related to the comments in the epilogue, related to clean drinking water. It may be of interest to keep a LifeStraw (filters majority of contaminants that will make you ill) available when drinking water from questionable sources or where sewage/runoff concerns are not heavily regulated. Its a step above Cholera, Dysentery, Giardia. Whether it stops Naegleria fowleri (brain eating amoeba) is up to debate. *carry some Clorox*
I'm guessing Kyde didn't pic the thumbnail pic. Hahaha Eric
That's a goose dude
Hey that goo stuff looks like a bowl of snot lol
I noticed that the village you only showed one (blue) pipe, which is probably water. Was there another one which we didn't see? and if not, how was the smell?
Hahaha, we wondered about the same thing. There was no noticeable smell, to be fair. -E
he posted this a week ago, but this video was posted today O.O
Eric explain this shit
Patreon supporters have early access. -E
Oh ok
When people ask you where your from what do you guys say?
Burrito trees!
