"so if you guys are watching this in 2020..." Whoa it felt like you were talking to me. Oh Eric, you had no idea you would have an even smaller tub later on.
When I started watching this I was like "No way I'm watching an hour of this." lol I totally watched the whole thing. Good stuff guys, you seem like people I'd hang with.
I'm watching this for the second time! I'm kind of addicted to this adorable couple. Don't watch their videos every evening, but when I want to relax and be amused, entertained and fascinated all at the same time, they really make me happy.
It turns off because you're pushing the draw back in fully and closing it. It's a grill you're supposed to leave it open a fraction to allow the heat to escape. If you didn't it would over heat and cause a fire, that's why it has the safety feature. :D Also it's pronounce Orange - Jean - a :D It cracked me up when you said jina hehe...

our son lives in Japan and before we went to visit he would just turn the laptop around basically without moving and could show the whole place.
WEIRD AL! YES! I UNDERSTOOD IT! You guys are amazing. Also, I'm not sure if anyone has told you, but that grill on your stove is a fish grill! (3,000 people probably have lmao) You add enough water to cover the bottom and place your fish on the grill and it steams it! By the time the water is gone the fish is done!
Watching this video from Takamatsu, down here in Shikoku. I'm not normally moved to comment, but I just want to say that watching your videos while in Japan is a special kind of geeky indulgence.Your videos are always great and super helpful at giving a glimpse into what it's like living in Japan.
You're welcome! I'm just visiting for now. I'm considering the move, but it won't anytime soon. Right now I'm in Japan for 14 days. It's my first visit so I'm trying to cover as much ground as possible. It's been awesome so far.
(1:43) ドエル・プリムロウズ !! I found your old home (the Saitama one) on Google maps, and it curiously has ドエル・プリムロウズ floating above the roof. I thought at first, that someone called 'Primrose' must have lived there, and she'd tagged it on G maps, but now I've just noticed that it's on the nameplate for the whole dwelling. (D'oh!) Very engaging hour's worth of video, guys. Nuthin' I like better, than watching someone else having to move!
Fascinating video. I've never been to Japan but I'm surprised that apartments come unfurnished. It must be really tough buying appliances and air conditioning. You made your pad look really nice!
Jonathan Deller Yea, we were surprised when we moved to Japan and were confronted with a literally empty apartment. It's not so hard now as when we move we just bring our washing machine and lights with us! -Eric
WOW, as someone who has lived in Japan and just had to do a Japanese apartment hunt last month, I was expecting that place to be so much more expensive! It's huge and being in central Tokyo.. Wow. Thats amazing. Great video ♡
Great video guys! I like the new apartment, a definite upgrade on your last one. Considering the location, the prices all seem very reasonable, although as you said, some of those fees seem a little unnecessary! Compared to London prices, you guys have yourselves a very good deal there.
I wish I could move to Japan.. but it requires so much. tourist waiver 90 days or short term long term visa. or a visa for work, and student, and I don't have a degree...sooooo yea lol
Great Video - thanks for sharing guys! Really like the parting shots, they add a lot to the videos! Eric - when we going to see a "little train" video? I'd love to see more about the trolleys.
I really really like trains. Been from Ohio to Portland Maine; Ohio to Quebec, and Ohio to Portland Oregon on trains. (that one was a bit too long lol )
+Martin Tovar Haha, I love how some people think this is super expensive and others tell us how cheap it is! It all depends on a person's perspective, I guess! Thanks! -E
exactly... here on the border with mexico, that type of rent will get you a big, big place... i have lived in mexico and that type of rent will get you a mansion or kidnapped, LOL... i am enjoying the videos, very informative, fun and very well done. Eric and Kyde, are great
I think insurance for apartments is getting more common in the states. The building I live in just made us get liability insurance to cover say if some one caused a fire or something like that. They wanted to charge $15 USD a month for $50,000. I got it cheaper and with renters insurance through my car insurer. Great post, loved it.
Great videos, very informative and hugely entertaining. I love the compact Japanese apartments and in comparison to London quite cheap. Keep up the great work
Eric did it again. The popsicle attack. This time with spagetti;) Maybe they have wasabi flavored popsicle ;) I think that isn't food actually but maybe medicine to clean out and desinfect your stomach. The first time costs are impressive(but some parts of it don't make sense)
Pretty slick apartment :P It's way better than what I have in Seoul, S. Korea and I paid deposit around $6000 and my monthly rent is $1000. There was Realtor fee around $800 too. Seems like it's way easier to get an apartment in Tokyo.
I bumped into your videos while searching for Japan's food related video, love your videos, awesome and thanks for sharing, hope you guys will continue making videos and I just subscribed.
Congratulation! This is the pretty neat place you found. Believe or not, Tokyo rent used to be more expensive than in New York, but now New York rent is a lot higher. They said that the average rent in Manhattan is $3.500- $4.000 for 1BR. BTW Napolitain is the spaghetti dish which was very popular in '60s and '70s in Japan. Basically it is the sautéed pasta with ham/sausage/meat, veggies and ketchup. Why ketchup? Because at that time you could not find any canned cooked tomatoes in Japan. It had disappeared in '80s because they wanted a real pasta not the cheap Japanese adaptation, but in recent years it made a big come back as older generations felt nostalgic about it. So you can find one @family restaurant type places.
acatinny Good lord, the costs for NYC are insane. That's just not doable! Awesome background on napolitain pasta, we see it all the time but didn't know the history. -Eric
hi! i'm a newcomer and this is only your 2nd video i'm watching but i'm really enjoying them :D it seems like you two have a really cool life and i was wondering how did you meet each other? c:
42c=107.6f wow! Also in America, a lot of places are now making it mandatory you have renters insurance if you rent an apartment from them. And most just to move in, it's 1st, last, and security deposit. so if your rent SF, CA is $1500×2=$3,000+ $1000=$4,000 to move in. And you may have to put down a deposit on utilities.so it's almost the same cost. You guys are great. Love the TOTO toilet!
You guys are funny as hell! You make the tragedy of living in tiny apartments in Japan a funny joke. I'm looking forward to move to a more central area in Tokyo, Otsuka looks nice! Cheers!
+Juliano Sumino Haha, I don't find the apartments here a tragedy at all, I quite like them for the most part! Glad you enjoyed and yea..Otsuka is nice! -Eric
I just think apartments in Japan feel too sad, lonely... If you don't have lots money of course you will have to cope with living in cheaper places, but in other countries it doesn't feel that sad. Probably because they have more space. That's why I'm trying to find an apartment in a higher floor, that way I might feel healed from the burden of living squeezed in a tiny space. Cheers!
Nice new place^^ Careful^^ That toaster bites. LOL love those band-aids xD I don't want to sound overprotective guys, but you did change the Combination on the front door, right? ;)
Very important the explanation of how the toilet works...now I can say that I am well informed about life in Japan.... ;-) Oh My God!!! all that grease to get an apartment, I am glad that the american system doesn't know about the "key money", the "thank you money" and all that junk ...unbelievable Eric, I don't know if you have other videos where you explain other expenses (i.e.: utilities, food, incidentals, movies, transportation...it would very interesting). Thanks ...
Wow, this video was really good. Thank you guys for sharing and opening up your home. This was my first video so I have to ask, what do you guys do for a living in Japan?
Alexis Ramirez I just finished a job teaching English for two years and Kyde proofreads financial documents that have been translated from Japanese to English. -Eric
Kyde and Eric yeah if you do any more practical videos like this (medical, how much things cost besides housing, working in japan etc) i would love it!
From 39:00- this reminds me of looking for an apartment in NYC or in San Fran, with the Realtor helping you with the apartment. And the key money is very interesting bribe to the landlord. Insurance is is common pretty standard in the Western USA at least.
Wow, it's been a year already since I first commented on this video ^_^ But anyway...I LOVE moving! We just got a house and we move in June! I'm so excited - for the move to a new house...not dealing with all the junk we've accumulated over the years :( Watching house tours is making me even more excited!
Love your videos! Waiting for a new video is torturous. Of all the ppl I'm subscribed to on YT, I probably get excited about yours the most. Shhh! Don't tell anybody. :-P
I rent a 6,000 sq foot space w/ a basement & store front, loading dock and coach house with 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths & patio for 1,800 a month in Chicago- just for comparison. Btw that refreshing laundry smell is actually carcinogenic chemicals, mainly benzene and acetaldehyde
+Kyde and Eric It isn't really, I can believe him. I've been looking at properties lately and its closer to what he is saying. Not ghetto either, new housing areas (new middle class suburbs) in great cities. If you are dropping 1800 in rent you might as well buy one of the newer small mansions they are putting up and just travel as much as you want with the savings. I had that in the back of my mind the entire time while watching the video.
Thanks for giving us the feel of Tokyo. I wish I had that money just to go there but too expensive for me AND YES I LOVE YOUR CAT CURTAINS AND PIG COW TOASTER!
Bit of a crude subject, but I'm curious - I'm sort of used to the idea that squat toilets are predominant in Japan, but obviously that's not what you guys have got; is it that you just looked out for an apartment with a Western-style one, or I have just got the wrong idea of toilets in the country?
MrTrancelotics These days they are quite rare, espeically in homes. In public (rest stops, public schools, train stations) you will see them but there is almost always the option of a western style toilet. Let's put it this way: I've been in Japan for 3+ years and haven't used one here. -Eric
what a lovely place :) how many square meters (or whatever values you are using) is the apartment? it's interesting that outside of the house there seems to be just one place to throw the dump in, here in Finland most of the apartment buildings have their own big bins not only for 'general dry stuff' but also biowaste, paper, glass and stuff
The fish is probably like the japanese equivalent of a rabbit meaning "go". In the middle east maybe it would be a camel #thatsracist . And key money sounds like bullshit. The thank you is your freaking rent check.
Most Japanese don't own a toaster, they primarily use the grill to make toast and fish. Also, the cover on the grill (between the two burners) must be removed when the grill is in use. The manufacturers also say to fill the bottom of the grill with water when grilling fish or meat to cut down on smoke and burnt bits, maybe that would decrease the chance the grill turns itself off due to overheating. Hope that helps.
Oh, I just realized there isn't an opening and a cover between the burners (mine does), well, make sure the vent between your burners isn't covered? Sorry about that.
Hi. From the future here. Just doing some quick exchange rate math, rent + maintenance fee in 2014 would have been around $1,070USD a month, but today it would be around $850USD a month. That is wild. Anyway, thanks for all the info. Planning a month long Tokyo stay, your channel has been a solid resource.
I went to the trash can...Tom cruise was in the trash can...Tom Cruise won't come out of the trash can...now I'm starting to get angry...SO I PULL OUT MY GUN!
Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick!!! almost 5k!!! you know i could re fi my house for that!! :P It is a nice pad though and Tokyo is a WONDERFUL address :) Loved the video cant wait to see the next one!!!
Something else. Say you wanted to add a pet (dog, cat, goldfish, whatever), is there a pet deposit/insurance required? Not that you really have the room, but a single person might?
It depends, fish are free to keep but if you want a cat or dog it's usually one months rent up front. Oh, and it's nonrefundable. That is if they even allow pets, which our building does not. -Eric
In my oppinion the Yamanote line is the best one! We (me and my wife) lived in Minato adn had only a five minute walk to the tamachi station (right between hamamatsucho and shinagawa), ie we had 5 minutes to a really fast travelsystem that could take us to any of the bigger districts or to the Tókyó station. Btw, to anyone visiting, check out the Fresa inn ( www.google.se/maps/place/%E7%9B%B8%E9%89%84%E3%83%95%E3%83%AC%E3%83%83%E3%82%B5%E3%82%A4%E3%83%B3+%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC%E7%94%B0%E7%94%BA/@35.642662,139.7480064,19.75z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0xa11eee7ee24589ed) In minato. It has some very reasonable prices, its a very quiet and calm part of the town and it is surrounded by 3 lawsons (convenience stores), deli shop, some better izakayas and several really nice restaurants (one specializing in Tori (bird) ) with some really nice umeshu and even some well priced sashimi :)
"so if you guys are watching this in 2020..." Whoa it felt like you were talking to me. Oh Eric, you had no idea you would have an even smaller tub later on.
Hey, i watched it in 2020 lol
When I started watching this I was like "No way I'm watching an hour of this." lol I totally watched the whole thing. Good stuff guys, you seem like people I'd hang with.
jagrcantakeyou Haha, glad you enjoyed it! I know how you feel about long videos, usually I think the same thing. -Eric
jagrcantakeyou Awesome! -Kyde
I'm watching this for the second time! I'm kind of addicted to this adorable couple. Don't watch their videos every evening, but when I want to relax and be amused, entertained and fascinated all at the same time, they really make me happy.
6 years and this video had a weird amount of nostalgia for me.

You should do a tour of your new new apartment.
Yea, we need to.

MsBlooberri Haha, yea, we make fish sometimes now! There is a big picture of a fish on the grill, we are just dumb sometimes. -Eric

Congrats on the new apartment.
Great video, Thanks for sharing.
Love all your videos.
oZiKiDDa Thanks! -Eric
If you guys wanna see a real expensive country come to switzerland..
Or Norway.
I think your mini oven/grill turns off because it cooks with convection heat. As long as you keep it shut, it should stay hot in there. :)
It might just be because it's a fish oven. Specifically for grilling fish. Another group of video do or darers in Japan demo'ed it for us.
Ultros Tako Ahh, interesting. I need to read the instructions. -Eric
Yay, new video! I thought you guys died or something :(
i know, eh?!
Me too!
Agreed, it's been a while...
Way to build the anticipation guys, lol.
;-)
How would I know?
Nelson4207 Comeon dude, you are clearly the authority on our chairs. -Eric
Great video guys! I like the new apartment, a definite upgrade on your last one. Considering the location, the prices all seem very reasonable, although as you said, some of those fees seem a little unnecessary! Compared to London prices, you guys have yourselves a very good deal there.
Matthew Epps Yea, we have been surprised to hear from everyone how expensive London is! Thanks, by the way! -Eric
I wish I could move to Japan.. but it requires so much. tourist waiver 90 days or short term long term visa. or a visa for work, and student, and I don't have a degree...sooooo yea lol
They don't want you there.
had to rewatch that mad tv episode haha I never realized key and peele were in that bit

Great Video - thanks for sharing guys! Really like the parting shots, they add a lot to the videos! Eric - when we going to see a "little train" video? I'd love to see more about the trolleys.
drmlabs Yea, we gotta get on that train and make a video! So cool! -Eric
I really really like trains. Been from Ohio to Portland Maine; Ohio to Quebec, and Ohio to Portland Oregon on trains. (that one was a bit too long lol )
This is still alot cheaper than living in San Francisco.
i am never complaining about my rent any again! and now my place doesn't look that small any more... wow, great video
+Martin Tovar Haha, I love how some people think this is super expensive and others tell us how cheap it is! It all depends on a person's perspective, I guess! Thanks! -E

hiiiimymelody Hah, even the startup costs? -Eric
Kyde and Eric Ha, noooo. If we went by monthly rent only, yes. Congrats on your new place!
Eric did it again.
The popsicle attack.
This time with spagetti;) Maybe they have wasabi flavored popsicle ;)
I think that isn't food actually but maybe medicine to clean out and desinfect your stomach.
The first time costs are impressive(but some parts of it don't make sense)
gandharzero I wish they had wasabi flavored...everything. I love that stuff. -Eric

I was told the prices in SF are comparable to Tokyo. Yes? No?
Neapolitan means from Naples/Napoli, which is in the south of Italy. :-)
Jesse Calcat Ahh!!!

+irie1tes That seems really cheap for a modern city, wow! Do you live in the ghetto? hahaha. -Eric
Lady Bird The toasters name is Moink! -Kyde
Kyde and Eric HAHA cute name! :)
USD 1000 for such a tiny place? that's crazy! My family and I live in a 3000+ square feet apartment for less than 1000.
+Labiba N. Haha, it all depends on where you live. Some people tell us this is really cheap. -E
-Eric
21:38... Boy danglers... LOL. That is great!
what a lovely place :) how many square meters (or whatever values you are using) is the apartment?
it's interesting that outside of the house there seems to be just one place to throw the dump in, here in Finland most of the apartment buildings have their own big bins not only for 'general dry stuff' but also biowaste, paper, glass and stuff
SonnyViceR They collect different types of recycling on different days. -Eric
SonnyViceR I don't know how big our apartment is... sorry! -Kyde
Hope that helps.
love you guys and what you do you rock
+Andrew Lynch Thanks! -E
Holy hell....that's insane. My flat here in the UK is £450 a month with one month deposit and that's it.
Look up pricing for housing in San Francisco, hahaaa!
Life-changing.
Hopefully for the better! -E
$1000+ a month is pretty standard for apartments in big cities like Tokyo.
16:50 I know it's too late to tell, but you need to pour water into the grill pan when you need to use the grill. It is safety reason.
seems cheaper than toronto! love the new place =) much better! enjoy!
zquaitte Thanks! -Eric
Oh, I just realized there isn't an opening and a cover between the burners (mine does), well, make sure the vent between your burners isn't covered? Sorry about that.
So then what prompted you to want to move? Was it getting a bigger place? Has it worked for you (smaller closet notwithstanding)?
Jason Bucata We moved to be closer to Kyde's new job, but also wanted a nicer neighborhood and larger apartment. We're very happy with it. -Eric
OMG, i have heard about the small and high cost App. in Tokyo. For me it is really claustrophobic... Thank for sharing!
in germany you have to pay bail wich is the rent for 3 month as security. ...
WOW 1k for the realtor fee. SHEESH!
Mike The Gamer No kidding. -Eric
I went to the trash can...Tom cruise was in the trash can...Tom Cruise won't come out of the trash can...now I'm starting to get angry...SO I PULL OUT MY GUN!
Probably the text on the popsicle refers to an Italian city famous for pasta with tomatos, it's name is Napoli or Naples. By the way you rock!
anna silvestrini Thanks! -Eric
Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick!!! almost 5k!!!
you know i could re fi my house for that!! :P
It is a nice pad though and Tokyo is a WONDERFUL address :)
Loved the video cant wait to see the next one!!!
OROCHIMARU UWABAMI Hah, yea, it's crazy expensive to move in. -Eric
I wish there was a girl in this world that would live like this like id want to .
+NIMERKING She exists, but I married her! Haha. -Eric
+NIMERKING There are tons of girls that would love to live in Japan..
This apartment was definitely an upgrade. I'm really surprised about the total cost; i was expecting a larger amount! Anyway congrats!
Nick Carlyng Yea, the monthly costs are fair, we just think the start up costs are a bit shocking.
