      This place is cheap compared to where I live in London but smaller too.
      Looking forward to your new apartment tour and cost breakdown!
      Are you going to do a moving video like you did when moved out of Saitama back in 2014?
      I know the cost breakdown videos are a pain to make but it kind of gives any aspiring "Move to Japan" enthusiast (if that's even a thing) an good idea about the living cost.
      P.S. keep up the good work.
      P.S.S. Coming to Japan on 11th of November for holiday, 2nd time this year!

      Will probably do a cost breakdown, but I'm not sure if we will film while we move. That added complexity with moving everything can be stressful, especially under a short timeline.
      We got the impression London was really expensive, but at least it's a really cool city. -E

      Our house/utilities run $750 a month for mortgage, insurance, electric, water, and internet. It is in a rural area with no closeness to anything and we have to travel an hour to shop at Aldi or Wal-Mart.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  6 лет назад +2

      $750 a month is really affordable. Just reading that makes me feel stress about what we spend, hahaha. -E

      Where i live during summers (Hoonah Alaska) rent is up to 2k +utilities/month if you would want a 2bed/1bath cabin, a studio can be as low as 800+utilities, but its VERY small, and electricity is rediculous here.
      I stay in Asheville NC out of summer, a 1bed/1bath in a nice neighborhood is about $1-1.5k/month utilities tend to be included there, except internet/cable.
      i use airhbnb for extended stays a lot, tends to be very affordable, seems a lot of pople who want to rent out a house or room use it here in the U.S. to avoid paying a crazy fee to a manager/realtor.
      it seems unusual to me for an Airbnb to not be furnished, in my experience in the US its always been furnished. Even the extended stays.

    I admire you guys for always accepting and appreciating little simple things. The house wasn't so bad but the bathroom was depressing. And yet there you were happy about it and you didn't mind it much. I don't know wether I'm a fussy person or did my age get to me and made me want complete comfort or what, but I could handle this place "unhappily" for only 2 days tops. Big respect for your spirits.

    I'm so late to this but all I could think with the stair and twirling/mattress situation was that scene from Friends where Ross yells "PIVOT!!!" like a lunatic. Really though the house is adorable. I've been a nomad (well, and super poor) for so long I don't have any furniture so I have no idea what I'll do should I manage to move to teach in Japan, but I'll figure it out. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting too old to do this anything but meh, it's fun and I can't imagine settling someplace permanently. ANYWAY that was an essay but this was really cute! Sucks about the AirBnB thing but I'm excited for your new apartment. Hope moving the mattress didn't hurt too bad!

    I also had the same issue with Airbnb for my trip to Japan in August, we ended up losing 2 of the 4 places we had planned on staying, and one of our hosts even told us they would have their certification by the we'd arrive in Japan, however they didn't and we ended up having to book our hotel literally hours before our flight to Japan! Fortunately the hotels we booked had nice rooms with good staff (one of them even chased down a taxi for us) and the views from our floor were amazing so in the end it all worked out, though it was a little bit more expensive. 10/10 trip would recommend

    I lived in Kyoto for a quite a while. It was a mile to the JR station and grocery store. Half a mile to Keifuku Line(Randen street car, Narutaki cherry blossom tunnel was my neighborhood) and 7-11. However there was a bus station right at the top of the driveway of my residence, so I took the bus almost daily. That Airbnb reminded me of my neighborhood, especially towards the JR station. Oh, there was a Family Mart outside the bus stop back to my residence, so I shopped there quite often, it selection sucks compared to 7-11. Plus 7-11 flavors the Nori for Onigiri.

    Hello from Hikone!
    That Airbnb thing really sucks! I had a couple scheduled for July and they got canceled. It was super stressful! I’m sorry it messed up your guys plans.
    Also the idea of having daylight saving time in Japan is so weird. After getting used to the sun rising at 5am it would be weird to go back!

  • @GabrielleMarinArt
    @GabrielleMarinArt 6 лет назад

    Oh god, hearing about that Airbnb law gave me PTSD! I was stuck in it this summer - I was used to getting Airbnbs for a couple months every year and I used to pay somewhere between 30-45$ a night just like you said, and then all of my bookings got cancelled something like 3 times in a row and the prices jumped to 200$ which really freaked me out.
    The thing with the extra "make up" money Airbnb gave back is that they were only Airbnb coupons, so you had to use them through Airbnb only. On top of that, you couldn't split the coupons, which meant that if we used a 700$ coupon for a 400$ listing, we'd lose the entire 300$ remaining. We had planned a roadtrip this year and because of all the disappearing listings, this really made it difficult for us and we ended up in dumpy places for 4-5 times the usual price. I hope things will get back to normal a bit, because this is the only way I could afford coming to Tokyo for so long!
    Sorry for that long post but OOF what a ride.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  6 лет назад +1

      Oh wow, interesting. Didn't realize there were restrictions on the Airbnb refund like that. I worry you weren't the only one in a bad situation like that. I understand why changes were made, but the way they were done was really awful. -E

    I usually have the same height problem in Japanese business hotels. I'm not as tall (188cm) so standing is not a problem, but washing my hair I'd regularly hit that fan. I used that as an opportunity to practice the "Asian squat" while showering...

    This is almost half the cost of a 2bdr apartment in downtown Toronto right now. Also, I was staying in an airbnb around that same area last year for $35/night. Loved being in a cute little neighbourhood yet still close to the action. Too bad about the new regulations.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  6 лет назад +1

      Wow, I really expected Toronto to be more expensive for some reason. I have this image in my head that Canadian cities are really pricy for some reason, and while that's not peanuts it's certainly not what rents could be. And yea, we liked the area a lot too! -E

    • @ikaruseijin01
      @ikaruseijin01 6 лет назад

      As a Canadian, the housing costs are absurd. It *has* to change, and I mean that seriously. People who have good jobs are either living in sh*thole apartments/houses or paying 50%+ of their income to rent/mortgage. My area's average income is about $25K a year. The rent is on average $1.2 K a month. The cost of a buying a place here is at least $900K. Mine is a lower end middle class neighbourhood, so nothing luxury, just working class utilitarian style housing.
      I predict a housing market crash. There's no way to sustain $1 million house prices when incomes haven't gone up to match. It's inevitable.

    • @youweechube
      @youweechube 6 лет назад

      @@ikaruseijin01 this isnt a canadian /US or Japanese problem, its a worldwide problem. My fix : tax the hell out of properties of people who already own another home, the few are owning all these homes and renting them out and profiting off the working people who are struggling to meet these inflated prices.

      Airbnb in Japan never went out of business, in fact we were in this one from June until October. It was just a matter of the hosts getting permission from the government to continue being allowed to post their properties on Airbnb, and it was a change that was done super quickly so most couldn't file the paperwork in time. Your story is super common from this summer, bummer. -E
