In this video, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets and Easter eggs from Advance Wars. Advance Wars debuted on the Game Boy Advance (GBA), and later appeared on the Nintendo DS. Howeve, these games are part of a larger series referred to as Nintendo Wars, which includes Famicom Wars, Super Famicom Wars, and Game Boy Wars 1-3.

I was honestly surprised as I saw it at the GamesCom on Wednesday directly in Nintendo's area instead of in the Indie-only booth. Which was kinda lackluster this year in general...

I have only played Advance Wars on a Game Boy Advance emulator I have on my phone...and I fell in love with the game series. It was so good. Quite frustrating at times, particularly so with Sturm(he scary with that music) But I still love the games. Got Black Hole Rising as well and will play that after. I would love to see this game series return. It would be amazing.

"Overlooked" is probably the right word. I've never seen anyone who played it and said it was bad.
Not just overlooked, but like the video says, we only got a small numbers of the games while Japan enjoyed the other games in the series.

That's not what i was trying to imply with that comment, what i meant is that Fire Emblem has gotten so popular that advance wars got overlooked. Fire emblem has gotten 5 new games since 2008, one every two years (with the exception of the time between awakening and Fates where it took 3 years). while the Advance wars hasn't gotten a game since 2008.
Nintendo needs to revive this series. These games were so much fun whether it was the goofy over the top units and leaders of the first 3 games or the gritty post apocalypse of Days of Ruin the games were all amazing.
I'm fine with making Waifus and Husbandos of the cast as long as they bring it back.
I'd marry Grit, of course.

Looks like the announcement of Re-Boot Camp sent this to my front page.
You don't know what I'd give to get this franchise back and running. Intelligence systems and Nintendo are in the perfect position to revive it with the switch given the success of the switch and fire emblem. I feel like if they go with a middle ground between the tone of days of ruin and the original we could get something really unique and memorable that appeals to a greater audience.
I'd be totally down to participate in a petition for a new AW game. I feel it needs as much, or more attention than FE.

Caio Coelho What do you mean it replaced it, they don't play anything Al and both series existed together for years. You act as if Fire Emblem came out of nowhere to take it's thrown when both were considered niche around the same time and fire emblem by no means scratched the same itch as advanced wars.
Plus again it might be dead now but if anything fire emblem proved that these tactical games can be extremely successful and escape their niche demographic.
Since the FE and AW worlds don't overlap in either way (and AW being a bit more simplified than FE so the tactics aren't equal), and FE gaining momentum in West, it wouldn't be hard to think that AW someday would return...I hope :/

Both Advance Wars and Fire Emblem made my childhood back there. I'm still mad FE gets games every year while AW got completely forgotten, hell I don't even play FE anymore I miss Wars World.
Also, still mad we don't have a high quality version of the Dual Strike OST (besides those SilvaGunner rips)

Fire Emblem Awakening would've been the last one if it wasn't for its popularity that they decided to make more sequels. Advance Wars is cool, but I think they planned Days of Ruin on being the last one, because of the storyline (it's post-apocalyptic)
Totally! Even if DoR wasn't my cup of tea, it features such an amazing soundtrack, Gage's theme for example still pumps me up in an unique way
Personally, I always felt the wars series felt far more strategic and more enjoyable than FE (due to lack of RNG crits and leveling), so I agree that it's unfortunate that FE is getting games and not the Wars series.

I remember getting Battalion Wars as a Christmas gift and being disappointed it wasn't a bigger more well known game. I figured it was going to be shovel-ware. Boy was i wrong. It became one of my all time favorite games.

It's weird that people went out of their way of translating the non-localized FE games, but the AW games that didn't come to the west are rarely mentioned.
Most of the wars games before Advance Wars don't really hold up too well. Even though an English translation for Super Famicom Wars was released recently, there's much more incentive to translate the non-localized FE games since they act more like RPG's and are much more narrative driven than most of the Wars series.
I think it mostly boils down to the difference in narrative scope. The early FE games are plot-heavy enough that a translation is really needed to understand what's going on, especially in cases like FE4 where the whole Holy Blood thing is gameplay-relevant. On the other hand, story in most Advance Wars games is like story in a Doom game--it's just an excuse to play the game.
As I grew up, I became quite fond of plastic army men toys. After watching that Generals at War documentary, I developed a strong urge to play some sort of strategy game using my army men toys. A few years pass and then, in one beautiful afternoon, I discover this gem of a franchise. You can't even measure the amount of happiness I felt that day...
Advanced Wars was a staple in my gaming time as a child. There was so much passion thrown into that little game boy advance title. The developers really cared back then.
The music for all the Advance Wars games are absolutely incredible and still worth a listen to today. What they could pull off on a dinky GBA soundchip was really impressive and they really helped bring to life the different characters and armies of the series, the drama of the storyline as well as getting you revved up for combat. Really wish they would bring the franchise back, there's a big hole in portable gaming for a simple yet fun strategy game.

This is one of the best GameBoy games ever made, and one of the reasons I love turn based strategy games so much.

I still play Duel Strike every day during my breaks at work, its a excellent way to kill 15 mins. while I would love a new Wars game for the switch, I would settle for a advance wars collection game, put the 4 games (2 gba, 2 DS) in a all in one I would buy that in a heart beat.

Yeah, dark conflict was more my type of game, the Fire emblem story with the famicom wars gameplay.
Every Advance Wars is great in its own way. I have played all of them and even completed AW1 and AW Dual Strike.

What!? So according to Nintendo games like Civilization are huge flops or something?
Remember that Nintendo of Japan has long held a low opinion of the idea of international audiences; 'it's too complicated' is a not-uncommon justification for why some titles and series never made it overseas, regardless of however complicated the original was. Having played quite a few said titles, however, I find that it often was not nearly as complex as they believed. This opinion is not limited to Nintendo either; just look at Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.
Perhaps they never took the PC market in to consideration. Japan's always been way more in to console and portable gaming than PC.
What's funny is civilization and the like are arguably far more complex than any game that Japan dumbed down, or didn't release internationally because of their complexity.
Ed Boon Maybe they think it is unpopular or too complex on consoles outside of japan? Cuz Civilizations, Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Stellaris etc are all PC games.
There are definitely turns being taken here. This has always been a turn-based strategy game series, as versus the real-time strategy model used by the original Civ and simulator games like SimCity that are more common in the western market.
AW Days of Ruins has a darker tone, but the story itself is at least solid. There are plenty of moments that I really like, and it tries to not be too dark. Plus, through the hint system, it has a decent amount of humor. There isn't a hard mode like in the previous 3 games, making some levels difficult, especially the last level.
(I'm from EU) I have very fond memories of playing this game with my little brother through the GBA multiplayer cable thing. This game is really underrated

Aah the music is everything. This was my favorite childhood game and I’m so excited for its reboot.
Andy for Smash Ultimate. It's definitely the biggest and best Nintendo series to not yet have a playable character.

@@luckymango636 I don't think that matters. Look at the likes of Captain Falcon and Wii Fit Trainer. Those characters prove that Sakurai and his team can make a good moveset out of literally any character.

As a big Fire Emblem fan, I’ve heard a lot about Advance Wars. I tried it out a little while ago and its probably one of my favorite GBA games now. I really can’t wait to pick up the other games, hoping that this series might eventually make a comeback.
Advance Wars is a top 4 Nintendo IP for me along with Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. I absolutely, undeniably, unapologetically love this series and it pains me that Nintendo has abandoned it. The series took everything I loved about Command and Conquer when I was younger and made it a turn based game.
The fact that Fire Emblem has become such a massive franchise while Advance Wars has been dormant for years saddens and angers me, because Fire Emblem started off as a spinoff of Advance Wars and the latter is a superior series to me. The combat is so deep and engaging and the games are so damned addicting. I would do anything to see a new game on the Switch, but I'm not holding my breath. With Fire Emblem making Nintendo so much money they have no need to work on another turn based strategy game.
My favorite series, its what got me into Fire Emblems.

6:58 I dunno why but I find it interesting to know when weapons in games are actually modelled after real ones. Like I remember seeing a website that lists down every weapon seen in movies, animes and games and identifying each one with its real life counterpart, like the weapons in Shadow the Hedgehog for example.

3:45 - Norman, also, The Japanese title for Advance Wars: Days Of Ruin ended up being Famicom Wars DS: Last Light. Fun fact: The translated subtitle’s name abbreviates as “LL”, possible referencing the fact, that, it was planned for release on The DSi XL, also known in Japan as The DSi LL, likely for “Larger Than Large”.
