Great video. Around 2002 I used to bring my GBA to the hospital to visit my grandpa and I'd play AW and it really helped me get my mind off things. To this day I'm blown away by how deep it is and it baffles me that it's not a bigger franchise.

Also me: Is that the final story mission, or the "optional" final battle if you complete specific missions? Because that description could easily have been either

0% Chance it's Rivals, you can't land on it by accident in a blind playthrough. Same as Sonja's extra missions.

Probably my favorite game of all time. I’ve been playing it and all the sequels since release, but the original feels perfect. One thing that really stands out is the sound design and the user interface - extremely polished. Only downside that still bothers me is how the AI “cheats” in fog of war. My advice is just to look online for the “fogless” image of such maps, as otherwise you’ll find yourself save-scumming to gather Intel before each turn.

This was my frist gba game because my dad got it for me with my gba I just remember nerding out on as wee lad I thought it was the best game ever
Purchased this when it was released for GBA. Just going back to it now after all these years, and it is even better than I remember!
i remember seeing the advance wars assist trophy and knowing nothing except "I wish i knew what game that was from, it looks cool"
i missed advance wars, but i fondly remember advance wars 2, it's a great series and i've enjoyed other titles in the series
When I first beat the final mission (not the Rivals! one) I had grit on the left and drake on the right, the way I won is through spamming tanks and rushing the bases with andy and drake with grit's rocket, missiles and artillery firing first.
When you say last mission
Do you mean the one against Sturm or the other last mission between Andy and Eagle
The Sturm one. I didn't make the right story choices to unlock the optional ending mission.

Played this game when it came out. Loved it! This also helped get me into Fire Emblem later on
The final mission is a major difficulty spike. I like trying to figure out how to affect which allies would join you and going from there. I appreciated it, but feel like it went on a bit too long
Good review, but you missed the bit about being able to make new units. You can do that with certain building tiles in some missions

Yeah, it seems odd to focus on that as an "uncommon feature" when it's more like a defining aspect of the game. Just that the campaign doesn't, sometimes. But that's unusual, the usual AW experience involves bases and properties.
I like tactics games that arent rpgs and dont have level up mechanics which can make the game too easy/hard
I really like how this tactical game is simple to learn the rules, though there many things to remember, so not too simple.
I am very excited to play this game when the remake comes out

Just picked it up for $35. I slept on this game as a kid. It kinda reminds me of Tom Clancy’s : End War on the PSP Specifically 😂
I'm currently playing the sequel, stuck on the mission with an active volcano blowing up every other turn.

If you wanted a mobile version of Advanced Wars, then I have something that would work. Advanced Wars By Web, it's community made, and all about the multiplayer aspect. I've honestly never played the original games but really enjoying playing on that website.

Final battle is daunting to anyone who doesn't know how the AI picks it's targets. I love this game though.
I remember goint to the store to buy a new GBA game. I allready had "all" the good titles that were in the shelf there, so I simply went by the box art. So I got this game. And, yes I was blown away. It had so much content, like the map store, map creator, the ranking system etc. So glad they will bring a remaster of this to the switch soon.
I will say, learning to strategically lose units is a vital part of the meta game. Often the best way to stave off the enemy. Is to place a low value in their path, either to physically block them while you position other units or to entice them out of your units.
Literally just got back into this series for the first time in a few years, yesterday glad you made this!

So I finally bought Nintendo DS Lite and I also got a copy of this game. I frikkin love it and I managed to reach the final mission :)
The final mission wasn't that big of a challenge, at least on normal mode (the hard campaign is a different story). The thing to remember is campaign Sturm has high offense but reduced defense, making him relatively similar to Grimm from Dual Strike and thus quite weak. He's a glass cannon who's units hit hard but melt the moment they come up against powerful enemies. Just make sure you keep Andy's forces alive in the center. Have him crank out infantry every single day and have Blue Moon and Green Earth/Yellow Comet forces work together to rescue him. Once you manage to survive the initial onslaught, cross the bridge or fly over it with bombers and park units over bases to block him from building stuff.
One "the AI is dumb" strategy you can also use it let him capture that airport right in front of Andy and build a missile in range of it. The AI will sometimes just constantly waste money building bombers from it turn after turn that your missile can shoot down in one hit.
Love these videos. Keep them up. I know the blow up is coming.

I bought and modded my first GBA in 2021 and I am absolutely hooked on advance wars 1 and 2. I’ve played a bunch on the gba and every time I boot up advance wars, hours go by like crazy. I can’t wait for the release of the reboot. I really wish they would at a way to switch to the old sprite graphics style though. Hard to describe but I find the gba graphics to be very charming.
If you thought Advance Wars was complicated, I have bad news, it's forebearers on the Famicom/Super Famicom and Gameboy are much, MUCH more complicated.

People were legit complaining about it being a "remade" GBA game, but it's two solid games, with 3D graphics, it even has idle animations for portraits. This is worth full retail.

The irony here is the final mission isn't nearly as hard as the REAL final mission against Eagle. The last against Sturm looks much harder than it actually is imo.
Man I finally beat the last mission what was so much harder that the rest of the levels. That was so much fun! I remember playing this like 20 years ago. It’s so awesome to finally beat it!
The final mission is a complete joke compared to the real final mission against Eagle.
If ever this series returns, I wish they will release one with the charm of the old game and the balance and promotion mechanics of days of ruin. The promotion mechanics of days of ruin really add a whole another layer of strategy since you get punished for mindlessly getting your units killed and rewarded for keeping them alive

Now coming to Nintendo Switch
I just started playing AW1 on my modded 3DS XL. I've finished off the training levels (all As) and I have just started the Campaign. I really enjoyed the ability to build units - it provides an extra level of strategy (and provides a real reason to capture cities). However, I've hit the level where I'm facing Grit with fog-of-war - talk about nasty! I'm hoping that my last save is towards the beginning of the level as I'm getting wiped out by indirect fire from unseen locations. Talk about a trial by fire. (And yes, I know the AI can see through the fog - doubly unfair.)
My absolute favorite gameboy advanced games. I've got both carts and Roms. I play the game daily still, on my phone.

If I made a list of video game series that deserve a fighter in Super Smash Bros., Advance Wars would be at the top of the list.
I played the original game a while back, but I didn't get far, I suck at pure strategy games. It's incredibly charming, though, even though I was floored that a dumbass like Andy, who didn't even know what an airport was, was made a Commanding Officer of an army. I'm also glad this series was given a second chance with the Nintendo Switch remake, though who's to say if that will be enough to fully revive the series.
Just played through and honestly the difficulty makes it one of the most rewarding games to beat
Now what would be REALLY great about Advance Wars? Is if you didn't have to sell your soul for a complete copy for both the 1st and 2nd GBA titles.

12 year old me must have been a tactical genius because I don’t ever remember being challenged to the degree my first go at Dark Souls was. I definitely remember it being a very enjoyable challenge though.
I did play a good deal of fire emblem before I played Advance Wars so maybe I understood the AI better than others
The first time I played Advanced Wars when i was in middleschool the final mission took me well over 3 months of trying and retrying, but damn was winning satisfying.

I genuinely rate advance wars 1, 2, and dual strike as 100/100 quality 'work of art' / 'perfect' games.
Elegant skill gap is the key to a truly god-tier game. See: Chess
And the learning curve for this game is so painfully easy and gradual. A child could pick this game up, and a 40 year old man could be 1,000,000x better than the child for how much skill gap this game has.

Yes! That's what I used for the purposes of recording gameplay. I used the "OpenEmu" emulator on OSX, and the "virtualboyadvance" emulator on Windows 10. I think the ROM was from romsworld.

Hard Mode Campaign is even more fun~
Makes me wish Days of Ruin had a hard mode as AW1 and AW2 did.
This was the first game I got when I got the GBA around launch. I had a limit of $30 for the game and there wasn't much options. I really had no idea what to pick but I landed on choosing Advance Wars. Expectations were low but I remember being giddy when I started playing. One of the best games I've ever played and one of the ones I've sunk the most time in.
I was also fortunate to have the Nintendo power issue that had tips and tricks (i passed on getting the Nintendo power advance issue that covered it) to help me unlock the other COs and give tips. They weren't play by play tips but just good solid strategies to help you.
Final mission I remember being hard but not impossible and more forgiving than other final bosses I just couldn't defeat because my thumbs don't work that way. Just out think the opponent and you can get by, it just can take a while for that to happen.
But then you got the war room and multiplayer maps so there was a ton of value in that tiny cart. Advance Wars helped pave the way for fire emblem in the West and the field training was a needed way to help ease western gamers into the genre.
I can't wait for reboot camp edition to come out!

You probably did the final mission with the wrong COs.
Depending on your choices during the campaign, the COs you get are different.
Make sure that you use Andy on the mission where you get max and DON'T finish Olaf's navy by rout.
