How to Fix an SD Card with a Missing Lock Switch

- The entire lock switch on my most beat up old SD card disappeared without a trace. I couldn't write to the card anymore, and each time that I tried it showed an error on my computer. To replace the missing lock switch I used a plastic butter tub, a pair of scissors, and a dab of glue. This whole fix only takes a few minutes. Make sure that the new block in place of the lock switch is firmly glued in place so that it can't wiggle free inside of the SD card slot in the future.
update 3 months later, this fix is still holding strong despite this SD card being carried around every day in a pocket.

I'm having trouble removing the write protection on my SD card, so I came across this video but tried other resources. I put a piece of hard plastic in it and sealed it with some tape, and it worked perfectly. My SD card was finally formatted. I hope this will help others as well. This tutorial is far more reliable than the others. Thank you very much.
I know this is an old video but wanted to tell you I appreciate the video. I thought with my bad eyes and worse motor skills I'd never be able to cut it so small much less glue it in place. So I put a piece of tape over the whole notch. Worked like a charm. Now I can still make it read-only if ever I wanted to. Thanks for getting me on the right track.
wow! i was so sure this wouldn't work but it did! i used that outer part of the sim card that is left over when you pop out micro /nano sims - used the slimmest edge, trimmed it it and it fit PERFECTLY. thank you so much you really saved me!
Oh-my-god thank you so much for doing this video. I researched and researched how to fix "Card locked!" on my Canon even pulled out the User guide (this gave me nothing)and everything but all research said to slide or move the plastic switch up on the sd card. Well I didn't see any switch...! so I finally put in how to unlock camera card without a plastic switch and your video popped up! I did exactly what you did and used my butter lid I didn't even use any glue and it worked! Of course that piece may get lost somehwere in the camera hahaha but I really don't care right now just glad to have it working and able to download a years worth of videos and pics! Thank you!! I'll just get a new sd card. I have been meaning to do this for like forever now but just never did. It's super old. Thanks again!

Might as well ask, since I'm watching the vid: would taping a micro sd card adapter and covering the switch slot with scotch tape also work? ive been trying to unlock my microsd card for a while now and ive seen some people doing the same method. wouldnt it damage my adapter and it could get stuck in my laptop card slot?
Yes tape will work...similar to taping cassettes write protect hole. Two small pieces layered (to make more rigid) just covering the hole worked for me.

I had a missing switch on my SD card on my one laptop I was able to move pics and video to sd card got no message of write protection. I noticed then all pics I transferred off my cell were gone on sd card. I tested it I moved one pic to sd card it showed moved to file until I rebooted laptop then nowhere to be found . I noticed switch for write protection was gone I inserted in another laptop and got write protected message. I'm now missing approximately 6 months worth of pics and video. Could they still be on the card I just can't see files?

slip of sellotape round it works fine. found the out when no plastic available. same as a cassette was. sellotape over the record lock hole..baddabing.

What if the chunk gets stuck in the sd camera hole?
Doesn’t work for me. Tried different tape configurations and added a perfectly sized cardboard piece to slot into area but I can’t write anything onto it. Real disappointed after it seems to have worked for others!

Like thank you so much I appreciate you greatly... this worked .. all I had to do was to use a paper tape fold it backwards to cover the hole and a transparent light tape to hold it all together...
Another issue with these cards is a loose lock switch. It slips to "write protected" every time you insert it into the reader ...
Glue helps ;-)

Why is it not detecting
Fill the slot with hot glue. Cool. Trim away excess with exacto blade. Done. (you can fill the whole slot btw)

So many nonsense videos about new key from the registry editor the above video was the best and most simplest by far
All I did was put a hard piece of paper and it's back up and running
I just put some tape over the broken slot and it actually did the trick :)
