- Thanks for all the comments on the last video on this. Yes, I told you I was an idiot.
Anyway, some people suggested simply using cardboard to stick the remains of my SD card to, whilst others suggested repurposing an old Micro-SD to SD card adapter.
Other suggested a 3D printer, but I don't have access to one of those yet!
So let's test out cardboard vs Micro-SD adapter. I'm sure both will be easier than my ridiculous wires. Right?

I agree but only with the 1st part. While for the 2nd all I will say that having a profile or channel whatever, especially in the past 10 years up to today is a miracle and overall luxury.
And in my case I am lucky to be alive let alone be able to do jack s--t online, aka ocean of spam, AI, bots, parasites, politics and overall an cesspool of human waste ...
Many of my friends and me were used and abused by Google and others, we burned years on these parasite platforms. Learned on that mistake and never do it again.
So if someone doesn't have content, it doesn't mean they are less worthy by something ... that is just too ignorant and dumb to say.
But yeah nothing wrong with Steve's channel, it's a pleasant step out of the common trash, is like one of those needles in a haystack that when you find it you kinda wonder if you traveled to another dimension or something ...
If someone hurts you online, don't read too much into it, block that person or bot and move on, life is too short, even now we talking about it is a luxury and waste of time at the moment ...
Should be common knowledge by now really that mean, sick and evil people exist online and will be more and more of them each year because
A) questionable people casually reproduce and there is zero parenting going on
B) the kids are left to be parented by media and the internet and sadly they are exposed to the worst things, one of which is brainwashing and the 1st "program" they run through
It was a thing for 15 years or so, so yeah sadly we live in this mess, learn to ignore and move on.
But on topic of the video. Yeah cardboard is great but if you want to repurpose old cards and actually still use them (I highly suggest repurposing and recycling things) I suggest make them out of plastic, like credit cards, payphone cards or similar things.
On a related note in my entire life I never bought a single guitar pick, instead I made them out of random plastics phone cards and the things mentioned above. I could never find ones in stores I like or fit my needs, also they tend to be expensive so as easy to loose so I rather make them out of scrap if I loose them I can make another. All I need are two things: scissors and nail file. Saves me time and money for other things ...

Yes the cardboard worked but the first way soldering the SD and figuring out the clip touched for ground was way more interesting and entertaining, well done Steve for being creative informative and entertaining and making money off the haters with an extra video for them to falsely feeling smug about, keep being you that's why we watch

If you guys ridiculed Steve for something he didn't know or think of, just think of all the times you didn't know or think of something that you later knew about.
It's not about making him look like an idiot or making fun of him - his initial solution is perfectly fine and if you enjoy soldering way better than working with scissors/snips and hot glue BUT with a certain size of audience and a certain skillset one can make a solution that works for steve (that has a certain risk of failing) look way more accessible than it is.
He's been greatly living up to his responsibility as a youtube creator with this video - very well done.

I hope me mentioning fixing my broken card with a mSD adapter didn't sound rude. It wasn't meant to, I just said it as I needed a permanent fix for it as back then, 16Gb SDs were rather expensive. Keep up the good work, it's always different approaches that inspire all of us looking for solutions.😊

As someone who has watched almost all of Steve’s videos in the last 6 months his solution was more fun. Efficiency doesn’t always develop a skill and that’s what he has done. I’ve been practicing my soldering since COVID started and I can say for certain it’s always more fun when you find a project to use your tools on. Cheers Steve, keep up the good work.
I preferred the first way you did it, the general consensus is that you repair/modify electronics with your soldering iron… It’s even better though when you launch components with your hot air station 😂

A semi-permanent solution might be to glue the remaining board to a thin piece of plastic, like a piece of a blister pack or a milk carton. That would be stiffer, more durable, and maybe that little bit thinner that would make it work. You might even be able to use it in your camera and other hardware as-is that way.
I’m kind of shocked that the entirety of the electronics are included that tiny area under the contacts. Considering how small μSD cards are, maybe I shouldn’t be, but it comes as a surprise to me!
Bravo! And now that you have done this experiment, you now have those to use technically, as long as what you have modified on the micro SD adapter or made from cardboard doesn't break or become compromised in some way, neither of those needs to be remade. Simply toss into "custom tool" place and re-use as needed . Thanks for doing all of this interesting content for us to digest and enjoy

I think you do a great job in showing different ways to tackle electronics. At the end of the day you got your data off the broken card. I would say your the real winner out of all this 😊
Brother, you're still my current favorite youtuber because you went the hard way and made it more entertaining to watch. At the end of the day, those people who got extremely butt-hurt about the way you fixed it aren't real fans in my book, you still did the job and got it complete. Keep doing everything the way you do it and don't listen to those idiots.
I enjoyed the first video and was impressed that your tangle of tiny wires did the job. I also read the comments. Maybe they got nasty later, but the cardboard comment I saw and that was heavily upvoted (it used the word cardboard about 17 times) made me laugh and I think was intended as more gentle ribbing than any sort of insult. If that was the one that hit a nerve, it's a great example of the loss of context when you're communicating via text alone.

When I saw the original video, my first thought was that you could just open up one of those adapters and solder the contacts to it (not completely replace them). But looking at this video maybe there isn't even enough space for that either!

As for the cardboard, maybe thin plastic would be better. The lid from a butter or cottage cheese container would probably be perfect.
Using cardboard is something i never would have thought of myself, I'm surprised that works, it just goes to show the pins are all you need, and the rest is mainly there to protect the card from wear and tear.
Quite frankly, I like how the remains actually look rather than th whole SD card. I’d rather make an adapter to the remains of SD cards, when one is full I’d interchange them within this “adapter”.

I questioned the method while watching the video too, but Steve's whole schtick is that he's learning as he goes and he's winging it. The original solution was overengineered, sure, but it worked. The goal was to get the files. He succeeded and he got to make some bonus content and got engagement out of it.

3:13 - looks perfect and simple for daily use ! I still wonder that this format still exists after over 25 years I guess since I got one the first time for a Olympus digital camera back then. And have not bought those for over 20 years i guess.

Sure cardboard is easier, but the original solution is a lot cooler, AND you learned more in the process (and so did the viewers).

I've used cardboard one time to repair a diskette that got disintegrated in the mail. Only to find out the contents had been overwritten at some point. At least I learned how to fix it :)

I like to see people trying things that they haven't done before to see if it will work. If they learn anything then it's not a failure. That's the basis of engineering progress (science usually follows engineering, not vice versa.)
imo The cardboard shim was the better of those solutions. There are thinner common materials than the cardboard used that might work better - photo print paper, some plastic wallet ID cards, index card stock, and clear plastic anti-theft packaging come to mind.

There isnt a right way because everybody is doing what works for them. Maybe there is a best way but who cares, providing the way they use, works.

I’d like to see you trying to solder some wires from the micro SD adapter pins to the broken SD card pins.
If this was something I did all the time, I would make a test clip with pogo pins, or maybe just modify a card reader.

If it works, is it really a bad idea? Personally i would have went for the iron first as well. Makes it more fun, plus you can get more soldering time in, which will increase your skill level. Great job Steve! All your videos are very entertaining, helps a fellow like myself learn and try things with the ol' iron.

another method is to have an SD card reader with the socket metalic cover removed and you just press from above your card. An instant operation.
If the thickness of cardboard+hotglue+SD is too much for the reader I would have trimmed the cardboard and used scotch tape to glue it edge to edge to the cardboard

As a pro photographer I learned a long time ago not to use full size SD cards at all and just use micro-SD cards in a full-size adapter. I learned that lesson after having a full SD card break on me. I lost the data, however if it's used an adapter all I would have had to do was change it from the drawer full of unused adapters I had. 🤔
Watching you trace the SD card adapter onto the cardboard RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE reminded me of my high school auto-shop teacher who taught us how to cut custom gaskets. If he saw you do that he would smack you upside the head and call you a dummy for not putting one of the flat edges directly up against the flat edge of the card material. I can still hear him berating us saying "Why would you cut four sides when you only have to cut three of them?". Good times. Good times.

As someone who works in a print shop, I instantly thought this. One cut, one time, eh, doesn't really matter. But when your day can be filled with cutting and cutting and more cutting, you become hardwired to make as few cuts as possible.

The micro sd to sd adapter has the pads seperate from each one of them with a gap, that’s where the plastic housing goes in between.

I think the methods from both vids are pretty darned impressive. Plus next time you need to solder finicky lil wires in an awkward spot, now you've got more practice in the can. Either way it's chicken dinner! 🏆

My idea of a mod is using an AAA battery with scrunched up tin foil when I've run out of AA batteries, so really, the naysayers can just go do one!

Problem with the cardboard/sd converter solution is that it just wasn't as much fun to watch as the soldering video being done was. Why take the boring and obvious route when there are more interesting and complicated ways of doing things. Granted, the cardboard option works for people like myself who don't have any kit for soldering but then, I watch these videos for the entertainment factor rather then any plans to fix anything.
I imagine some stiff paper, like card stock or maybe photo paper, would make for an even better method. Just a smidge thinner.
But I suppose the cardboard works just as well, especially now that the card reader is already bent out lol.
First attempt was too floppy to go in, second attempt was too thick for a comfortable fit. Life's little problems.

I would've probably 3d printed a new sd card model with a proper cutout for the 'pcb'. I think it would almost function as well as the original card

They probably only thought of the cardboard solution because in your first video you stuffed paper in there to ground the SD card reader. You stuffing paper in there made them think of stuffing cardboard in there. So ultimately you gave them the idea...
BTW: what if you took the Micro-SD to SD card adapter and soldered wires from the broken SD card to the Micro-SD pins? In other words, keep the adapter intact and just solder to the end of it. You might even be able to fit the broken SD card inside the adapter and thus have a usable SD card once again.
