Candlemass is the quintessential doom metal band if one focuses on the sub-genre's fixation with fatalism and agony from more of a spiritual/religious perspective, their music tends to sound like long-running funeral marches through the moors at dusk or during the failing light just prior, hence they ascribe the term "epic doom metal" to their sound (the title of their first album, which "Solitude" came from is the Latin version of the same phrase). Overall a good starting band, particularly for people who are only familiar with Black Sabbath's take on doom metal through songs such as "Hand Of Doom" and "Into The Void". There are other subsets of doom metal that lean a bit closer to the stoner variety that includes a bit more of a political angst meets drug induced depressive state while still embodying the Sabbath sound as well in bands like Electric Wizard and Sleep, whereas more traditional bands in the style such as Saint Vitus and The Obsessed take a more generalized view of the sound that Black Sabbath pioneered and listen more like a composite of all of Sabbath's early 70s material, which is actually quite varied. Great reaction to this song, Johan Langquist's vocals are definitely an acquired taste and if you explore more of their material you'll find that the vocals largely sound different since he was only on their first album. Their next vocalist Messiah Marcolin has a bit more of an operatic sound to his voice and a somewhat less pitchy delivery, though the material that Thomas Vikstrom did on Chapter VI and the later material done by Robert Lowe (no relation to the actor) is probably the most accessible vocally speaking.

Glad you guys got to this. Candlemass is awesome. Them and the entire Doom genre is basically a throwback to the sound Black Sabbath pioneered. Based on all their underwhelmed reactions to what metalheads consider great vocalists, I bet they will not like Messiah (as they didnt like/were not impressed by Dio, Peter Steele, Bruce Dickinson, Mike Patton, etc.). It would be fun to watch anyway.
@@paolocito what The Hell are you talking about? They Love Dio and they didn't hate Pete or Bruce. However they clearly didn't enjoy Belladonna of Anthrax.
As a guy who has been trying to like Sleep for years, what would be the best stuff for me to listen to? QOTSA and Kyuss are my favorite bands. I've listened to Dopesmoker (the whole thing) twice but I assume Holy Mountain is a good place to start as I already like a couple of those songs (Dragonaut and Holy Mountain). I have all 4 albums. Any advice?
the answer to the question "why is it called doom?": Well, in 1970 Black Sabbath creates metal and at the same time creates doom metal, but doom metal is not recognized until later. The name "Doom" comes from a song on the Paranoid album called "Hand of DOOM", it is believed that this is where the name was derived, as it is one of the most influential songs in the genre. The band's most influential doom songs are Hand of Doom, Black Sabbath, Under the Sun, Lord of This World, Snowblind, The Wizard, Into the Void, Children of the Grave, N.I.B, Sweet Leaf (which is also the first stoner doom metal song, I think), among others.
Have watched a lot of reaction videos this past year, but you guys are always the favourites. Simply because you don’t try too hard, and the reaction just seems genuine. Seem like just fun dudes who keep it real and open minded. Shout out from Australia ✌🏼
Great video as always! For Doom, some of my favourite tracks are: Draconian - Pale Tortured Blue Paradise Lost - Beneath Broken Earth Swallow the Sun - Falling World Saint Vitus - Born Too Late Trees of Eternity - My Requiem My Dying Bride - To Shiver in Empty Halls
Great to see that you liked Candlemass. They are such a fantastic band! You should give „Samarithan“ a try, if you want to give Candlemass another ride. But there are tons of other fantastic doom bands out there. Solitude Aeturnus - Upon Within, Count Raven - Nashira, While Heaven Wept - Vessel, Procession - To Reap Heavens Apart, Sorcerer - Crimson Cross. And that's just for starters *g*
Ah doom metal, an oft overlooked genre! My favorite doom band (so far) is actually a doom/black metal act from Canada called *Woods of Ypres.* They've disbanded now since their frontman died (car crash) in 2011 at the age of 31, but I still think they produced the ideal doom ambience: the mixture of the clean vocals, slow pace and morbidity of "standard" doom metal with the atmospheric elements and growled vocals of black metal, made for the perfect doom experience (i.e. depressing music that sounds amazing). Probably their best album (or at least my favorite) is Pursuit of the Sun & Allure of the Earth, their first full-length album (described by one critic as "metalized Pink Floyd"). Sucks that they don't exist anymore, but their 5th and final album (released after the death of their frontman) was good enough to win a Juno Award (Canada's Grammy Awards) for the best Metal/Hard Rock Album of the Year. Not bad for a bunch of boys from small town Ontario.
This was a nice surprise to pop up for me while looking at RUclips, as I got this cd over 25 years ago. A pretty good debut, to say the least, as I played it to death. As they mentioned the singer, they should check out the next one after that: Messiah Marcolin! Try "Mirror, Mirror" for his operatic tone! This is the first time I've heard of this channel and I assume the guys are like myself where I like pretty much everything from death metal (duh!) to new age. Very cool vid and commentary, hope y'all continue to have fun with this for quite a while.
Great video! I love watching your reaction videos guys! When this album was recorded, Candlemass didn't have a singer. Johan Längqvist was singing only at this album, until recently, when he was joining the band as their new singer. After Epicus, dommicus... was recorded, Bror Alfredo Marcolin (also known as Messiah Marcolin as a singer) joined the band. Candlemass then made three fantastic albums at the late 80's and a live album 1990 with Marcolin as singer and those are considered by many fans to be the very golden age of Candlemass. Some songs from the first album was later re-recorded with Marcolin and released at later albums. Some of the songs from the first album are also aviable in a live version with Marcolin. Marcolin has a totally different voice and a way to sing. Moore deeper and with a tecniq reminding of opera. I wish you could do another reaction video with Candlemass and for that pick a song from any of the three studio albums with Marcolin. If you pick only one, I would highly recommend At the gallows end from the album Nightfall, released 1987. Regards and greetings from Sweden to you bros
I've never really listened to much metal before, but you guys are definitely opening my mind up to it. I could definitely see myself listening to some more. Not sure I vibe with the lyrical content and just how dark and morbid this song is, but I definitely respect it. Keep up the good work guys
Paradise lost - Gothic Cathedral - ebony tears My dying bride - symphonaire infernus et spread empyrium None - A world, dead and gray or Hypoxic All great doom or depressive metal
Cool reaction, excellent song. I understand that u guys could not have heard it before, but some really famous songs are hard to believe that u guys didn't. Good job.
This isn't the best Candlemass song to react to. You guys should do like Bewitched or At the Gallow's End. Any song from Nightfall. You're definitely going to dig the groove!
They managed to pick the first song from from their first album, a great introduction to Candlemass in my opinion. Nightfall was my introduction to this band, heard it at a friends place a few weeks after release, an I was instantly hooked. But over the years Epicus has become my favourite album of theirs.
@@C64SX I agree that Epicus is awesome. I said that because they're hip hop heads and Nightfall is somewhat groovier, I think they're gonna like it more.

Why is it called (Epic) Doom Metal? Look at how the album is called, that should be clue enough ;) and yes, that's how influencial "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" was. As for other Doom songs (and maybe different takes on the Genre): CANDLEMASS - "The Samarithan" Embrace the voice of the second (and maybe most iconic singer) Messiah Marcolin and also probrably the most positive and uplifting lyrics you will EVER find in a Doom Metal song... and maybe in a Metal song in general. SOLITUDE AETURNUS - "Days Of Prayer" SA are probably a close second to CANDLEMASS in terms of status in the scene when it comes to Epic Doom Metal. They added a bit of groove to their songs, you should like it. Also, Rob Lowe on vocals is just savage. No wonder CANDLEMASS "borrowed" him for a few years :) SOLSTICE - "The Sleeping Tyrant" Well, this is something completely different. Driving mid tempo, English lyricism and melancholy, and a focus more towards the "epic" than the "doom" part. Overall though, "New Dark Age" is a gem and "The Sleeping Tyrant" one of the most amazing songs ever written to my ears. WHILE HEAVEN WEPT - "The Furthest Shore" You loved the epics by MEGADETH or METALLICA with all the transitions and changes in pace and tonality? You also digged the crazy melodicity and arrangements of NE OBLIVISCARIS? Then THIS will be the journey of a lifetime. 15 minutes of pure emotion. The speed especially in the beginning leads many people to believe that this is something other than Doom, but don't let the dynamics of the song fool you, it's one of the big, big and very underrated masterpieces. Have fun enjoying the rabbit hole that Doom Metal is!
You guys should do another Q & A sometime. Some things I've been wondering... What things surprised you the most in your metal journey? Are there some bands/songs you just are not going to do that we need to stop requesting?

The whole thing is great. Also dang....I remember now how this song just come right out the gates swinging lol what a beast
Nooooo! Solitude is a great song, but I would've suggested 'A Sorcerer's Pledge'. Still, good to see Candlemass on here. Wow, it seems I'm the only one on here who suggested A Sorcerer's Pledge. There's a section near the end of the song where it has that same exact drum pattern you said at 4:42. "Do. Do Do Do. Do Do Do.."
About doom metal, my favorite band is Cathedral. Endtyme album is a good start. Songs like "Requiem for the sun" and "Alchemist of Sorrow" have that slow-paced groove that you enjoy. ;)
As usual, good insights and fair points. One thing for Ryan. If you’re not crazy about the vocals, you might like the cover of this song by Oceans of Slumber who you liked. It’s a GOOD cover. Maybe check out The Sword for more Doom. Also, I know you’ve done a lot of Megadeth, but all the songs you’ve done were from the same album. Maybe try the commercial side? See how they clean up? I’d recommend Trust, Almost Honest, Symphony of Destruction, Sweating Bullets, or She Wolf. Thanks as always!
I really love the Oceans of Slumber cover of this song. I also like The Sword's first album quite a bit. I have a harder time getting into their newer stuff, but Age of Winters was great.

alot of doom bands came out many years before these. sorry.
Two words: Messiah Marcolin
PLEASE listen to a Candlemass song with him on vocals: Bewitched, Mirror Mirror, or Well of Souls!
Nothing compares...
100% right, this was a sad version of a great song. I had a great night out with these guys back in the mid eighties at the Dynamo center.
Based on all their underwhelmed reactions to what metalheads consider great vocalists, I bet they will not like Messiah (as they didnt like/were not impressed by Dio, Peter Steele, Bruce Dickinson, Mike Patton, etc.). It would be fun to watch anyway.
If they listen to the song, Samaritan, from the Nightfall album, they'll like Messiah.
Samarithan is a good one too
@@paolocito what The Hell are you talking about? They Love Dio and they didn't hate Pete or Bruce. However they clearly didn't enjoy Belladonna of Anthrax.
Black Sabbath - Into the Void
Nick Drage a must for them if they want to understand
YES! I'm sure they'd love it, they love everything else from Sabbath so far!
Black Sabbath - Snowblind. Good lyrics
Into the void is so damn good
DOOM
Sleep - Dragonaut
Sleep - Dopesmoker :D
As a guy who has been trying to like Sleep for years, what would be the best stuff for me to listen to? QOTSA and Kyuss are my favorite bands. I've listened to Dopesmoker (the whole thing) twice but I assume Holy Mountain is a good place to start as I already like a couple of those songs (Dragonaut and Holy Mountain). I have all 4 albums. Any advice?
@@APAL880 Holy Mountain is a good start. The Sciences aswell. Dopesmoker is for hardcore fans imo.
@@APAL880 Biggest advice I can give you is to try and smoke as much weed as possible before listening and during.
APAL880 The Sciences dude. Then The Clarity & Leagues Beneath singles and then Sleep’s Holy Mountain. Then you’re ready to appreciate Dopesmoker.
You guys have become my favorite RUclips channel in 1 day! Been binge watching all day! Hat's off!
the answer to the question "why is it called doom?":
Well, in 1970 Black Sabbath creates metal and at the same time creates doom metal, but doom metal is not recognized until later.
Another vote for Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard
Return Trip!
And Barbarian!
SAVATAGE - When the Crowds are Gone
Cheers!
Yes! Savatage needs way more recognition.
The song Chance would be a great pick, also!
david viteri yes!!
Folks, Savatage is awaiting to be heard here! Songs I would recommend: Edge Of Thorns, Handful Of Rain, This Is The Time, Morning Sun, Anymore!
Especially the live version on this one.
How about hall of the mountain king?
This is my fav Candlemass album (sorry to disagree, but also my fav CM singer)!!! Johan Längqvist is back in the band, to my delight!
i respect it. i probably like Messiah better but this is the shit too.
Hear hear! Messiah is unique in his own lovely way, but he never managed to put the same emotion into his voice that Johan did on Epicus.
Exactly my man! Nightfall is probably technically better but this one is my favorite!
dude Im SOOOOOOO excited for the new album.
Salute!
Finally asked for it a lot.
Really love what you do.
Alcest “Ecailles de lune part 2”
Agalloch “Not Unlike the Waves”
It’s gonna happen one of these days 😁
Definitely Agalloch, but something from their first two album albums would be better.
Saint Vitus - Children of Doom
Celtic Frost - A Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh
Celtic Frost
Some Corrosion of Conformity -Albatross would hit the spot.
This x2
I remember the days of playing D&D with my friends and listening to cassette tapes of this band back in the day. Good childhood memories.
Love you guys doing metal requests! Keep it up. You guys are one of my favorite RUclips channels.
"At Gallows End" is another great Candlemass song
Electric Wizard - Return Trip is one of the heaviest songs on record. Absolutely devastating.
Thats the song people should be playing to show off their heavy bass oriented sound systems. That song is like getting carpet bombed in slow mo
Savatage-hall of the mountain king
Man, I love covering this song.
YES. This song DEFINES epic, to me.
YES
The pioneers of power metal. Lots of great songs.
Savatage - Any song Savatage did even with the Pirate Shirt Guy
Acid Bath would be a great doom/sludge metal band to do a reaction on, it would probably be blocked though.
I have asked for this one for awhile! Thanks for reacting to it. Gonna go watch it now. ;)
La Villa Strangiato by Rush, Amazing Guitar Solo and build!!!
React to
Pink Floyd - Time
Best song of all time. Tells the story of all human being from born to death. Most beautifully done.
Totally agree! One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
Guys, try with Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King
Yes! Anything from the Self titled album. Especially this with the -a bit- cringeworthy videoclip!
Avoid the video at all costs. It's so cheesy that it makes it hard to enjoy the song.
Great song to recommend. I think they'd totally dig this song, maybe 24 Hours Ago as well.
For real. You two would love it.
Strange wings or 24 hrs ago better songs
Have watched a lot of reaction videos this past year, but you guys are always the favourites. Simply because you don’t try too hard, and the reaction just seems genuine. Seem like just fun dudes who keep it real and open minded. Shout out from Australia ✌🏼
Thank you for this one!!! Amazing band and song!!!! Lost In Vegas...YOU GUYS ARE KILLIN IT
I can see that scene in Conan The Barbarian where he is walking and pushing that giant wheel thingy in perfect synchronization to this song.
Candlemass-Bewitched (music video is legendary)
Dead from Mayhem is one of the kids that Messiah is pushing around... \m/
Great video as always!
For Doom, some of my favourite tracks are:
Draconian - Pale Tortured Blue
Paradise Lost - Beneath Broken Earth
Swallow the Sun - Falling World
Saint Vitus - Born Too Late
Trees of Eternity - My Requiem
My Dying Bride - To Shiver in Empty Halls
This is so sick! Candlemass is one of my all time favorites and it's rad to see people outside of the doom scene loving Candlemass this much!
Tres Brujas by The Sword!
Love em.
ELECTRIC WIZARD, SLEEP, more MASTODON!!!
Kyuss, dude.
Yes I am so pumped for this
Temple of the Dog “Say Hello to Heaven”
Temple of the Dog-Times of Trouble
YES! If they really want to hear Chris Cornell go off!
I've never really listened to much metal before, but you guys are definitely opening my mind up to it. I could definitely see myself listening to some more. Not sure I vibe with the lyrical content and just how dark and morbid this song is, but I definitely respect it. Keep up the good work guys
Always my favorite band for about 30 years. Got to see em in Dallas TX in the 80s or 90s at Joe's garage. Luv y'all's review. This is my favorite song
Paradise lost - Gothic
Cathedral - ebony tears
My dying bride - symphonaire infernus et spread empyrium
None - A world, dead and gray or Hypoxic
All great doom or depressive metal
For MDB id go for something like Black Voyage as an introduction. Crunchy heavy riff and no growls.
Paulo Figueiredo while I understand the idea behind it with the no growls, I just didn’t get into them as much after the early stuff hence that song.
Samaritan by Candlemass. Different vocalist. Arguably their most popular vocalist
Bob Anglum They likely would enjoy something from the Marcolin era a bit more
My FAVE song and album \m/
Well of Souls would have been good too
now I'm curious how you'd react to Sunn O)))
My favorite comment is when you talk about understanding the genres. Great channel.
Yeah agreed.
Under the Oak is their best track, especially for groove.
I personally think this is the best song in the Doom genre, so it's the perfect song for them to react to, but opinions ya know?
My Doom Faves
Cathedral - Enter the Worms, Soul Sacrifice, Alchemist of Sorrow, Congregation of Sorcerers
Sleep - Dragonaut, Aquarian
Electric Wizard - Return Trip
Uncle Acid - Melody Lane, Pusher Man
Lucifer - Total Eclipse
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, Sweet Leaf, National Acrobat
I was ready to mourn the lost love for Cathedral in the comments but you saved it! :D
Why is it called (Epic) Doom Metal?
Look at how the album is called, that should be clue enough ;) and yes, that's how influencial "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" was.
As for other Doom songs (and maybe different takes on the Genre):
CANDLEMASS - "The Samarithan"
Embrace the voice of the second (and maybe most iconic singer) Messiah Marcolin and also probrably the most positive and uplifting lyrics you will EVER find in a Doom Metal song... and maybe in a Metal song in general.
SOLITUDE AETURNUS - "Days Of Prayer"
SA are probably a close second to CANDLEMASS in terms of status in the scene when it comes to Epic Doom Metal. They added a bit of groove to their songs, you should like it. Also, Rob Lowe on vocals is just savage. No wonder CANDLEMASS "borrowed" him for a few years :)
SOLSTICE - "The Sleeping Tyrant"
Well, this is something completely different. Driving mid tempo, English lyricism and melancholy, and a focus more towards the "epic" than the "doom" part. Overall though, "New Dark Age" is a gem and "The Sleeping Tyrant" one of the most amazing songs ever written to my ears.
WHILE HEAVEN WEPT - "The Furthest Shore"
You loved the epics by MEGADETH or METALLICA with all the transitions and changes in pace and tonality?
Oh I kinda forgot about your cannel (sorry) been going back to your guys stuff and find this! An album I totally forgot about, thanks for reminding me of this! Haven't heard this album in years.
"Do. Do Do Do. Do Do Do.."
This whole album is win!
Doom Metal is amazing! I can strongly, and I mean STRONGLY recommend Empress Rising by Monolord!
NoVideos436 monolord kicks ass!
That was a rough one. LOL! Thanks guys!
IGORRR - Opus Brain
I've suggested Opus Brain on like every video of theirs! I think they'd love it
Sleep and Electric Wizard are a good start with doom metal. Or for more sludge, Acid Bath
Still love Candlemass. Seen them more than once in concert.
Black Sabbath - N.I.B
Lauchie Maddaleni I make sure I find you on every video and give a thumbs up; they have to do N.I.B
haven't they done that? I know they did Faeries wear boots and War Pigs
Bro your profile pic: Wassup Jim Bruer!
Came here to mention the Oceans of Slumber version. Glad someone was on top of it :)
