One of the best things about this music is that it was released in an era when it was sooooo taboo. During the satanic scare (aka satanic panic) of the 80's, you had to hide this music from your parents, and that just amplified the intrigue and adrenaline. The era made the music even better knowing you weren't supposed to be listening to it.

I remember thinking “this is it, this is the sound I’ve been looking for” after hearing this I heard Seasons then Reign in Blood. So I got three new Slayer records in three months that was an interesting three months to say the least. Slayer has been my favorite metal band since the first time I heard their Reign in Blood album in 1986. It was different than other metal I had heard prior. The speed had me confused but it grew on me as fast as they play. If I'm ever feeling stressed I play Slayer because the energy in their music matches my energy and it actually calms me. Dave Lombardo (drummer) is literally one the best drummers of all time. Period hands down end of story. So much of Slayer you haven’t touched yet. Angel of Death, Ghost of War, Mandatory Suicide. He will be joining the original Misfits on their reunion tour. He’s that legendary. He makes Lars look like a kid who just got his first drum kit...
I saw SLAYER open for Judas Priest on the South of Heaven tour in 88. They opened up the show with this song. The beginning riff went for about 5 minutes. It was 🔥
@Bret Zayger_Michigan you're probably talking about their later stuff and if you are I agree, but ALL their songs, up until divine intervention is pure gold, absolutely brilliant stuff. It's after that it all went downhill.
@Bret Zayger_Michigan I have to disagree there, I don't feel any similarities in their old songs, even if you find it similar, saying most of their songs suck is very harsh, I'm not a big fan of stuff post divine intervention, so I haven't heard God hates us all too much, but their old stuff is unbeatable
Still one of the best sounding drum productions I’ve heard to this very day. Drums sound absolutely killer. They sound clear, but raw and warm at the same time. That deep ass solid thumping bass drum with the powerful deep snare. That noisy, trashy hi hat and glaring crystal clear ride are equally stunning
Love Angel of Death, but South of Heaven, both the song and the album are Slayer at their best in my book. Criminal not following up with Silent Scream though!
Glad you liked it! Slayer Reign in Blood was my intro live in Germany 18 yrs old , 70+ holes in my leather from slamming not to mention the rain and strobe and locked chamber door. INCREDIBLE!!!
Raining blood was a bad way to introduce Slayer to them. I’m glad they listened to Seasons and now South OH. They’d have missed out on some brilliant musicians!
Ehhh, its one of those really fast thrash songs that they haven't liked in the past---they didn't like the fast parts of Angel of Death, for example, and War Ensemble is very similar to that song. I bet they'd like something like "Temptation" from Seasons.
I can't hear one note of this song without grinning ear to ear. I've seen Slayer so many times over the years going back to the 90s. When this song gets played it's electric. Like a shockwave through the crowd. Hearing this so loud you feel every crunchy riff in your bones as the entire place screams so loud they momentarily blow their voices out "BEFORE YOU SEE THE LIGHT, YOU MUST DIE!" Then every head in the place headbanging as one. Last Slayer show I attended the guy standing next to me go so excited he hugged me so hard we landed on the ground and didn't even notice as he bounced back on his feet to grab the person on the other side of him screaming the lyrics with them.
I just blared this song on a drive a few nights ago, my absolute favorite song off the album, but ultimately this was the album that got me into Slayer.
Slayer live in 89' , was the first concert of an known band for me. And they start ther set with this song. And when the intro was done , and the drum sets in, it feels like they throw nades to the crouwds

The other thing y'all didn't seem to get the context of when y'all listened to Raining Blood or when the guitars get fernetic are specifically designed for those of us the that thrive in the aggression of the PIT! The intro is still one of the most haunting intros in a metal song, especially when Tom screams "Before you see the light, YOU MUST DIE!"
This song is a tradition in Ohio to play with my friends at 12:00 midnight every, new years eve. It has to be played extra loud and it's the first song of the new year we have been hearing for decades. I think it resets us.
Back in high school this was the album that instantly turned me from punk rocker to metal head. Literally cut off a mohawk so I could grow my hair out.
SSSSSLLLLLAAAAYYYYEEERRRRRR!!!!
Go see them in Vegas on there last tour, the appreciation for them will be out of this world for you guys. They're a LIVE BAND
I related with George so much when he said he needed a song like this. The groove and energy of this song wakes you up and causes positive emotion to surge through your body. Thank you for your content and honest analysis of music. Rock on 🤘🤘
Slayer - "At Dawn They Sleep" is often an overlooked gem. Would love for you to review that song.

The most underrated Slayer album featuring Lombardo’s best drumming on a Slayer release......ever!!
I don't think it's underrated. I think it's their best and agree it's Lombardo's best drumming. "Behind the Crooked Cross " gets me every fkn time!! 🤘😝

You guys gotta do more Pantera. You'd love the grooves and heavy riffs.
I think they kind of banned Pantera off their list beacause of Anselmo's drunk racist rant. Which is a shame because they could have genuinely enjoyed the grooves.

I've seen Slayer live 12 times. You have to go see them once, you will never regret it! It will be one of the most energetic concerts you will ever see.
Great reaction to a great song guys.

Dave Lombardo (drummer) is literally one the best drummers of all time. Period hands down end of story. So much of Slayer you haven’t touched yet. Angel of Death, Ghost of War, Mandatory Suicide. Same dude, I'm Meh on slayer but this and dead skin mask stuck with me.
Billy Turner dead skin mask and war ensemble always had an effect on me
@Bret Zayger_Michigan you're probably talking about their later stuff and if you are I agree, but ALL their songs, up until divine intervention is pure gold, absolutely brilliant stuff. It's after that it all went downhill.
Behind the Crooked Cross always gets me nodding my head. That intro.
Was never big on Slayer before but they've grown on me lately.
The kick drums on this album sounds amazing. Rick Rubin and Andy Wallace should of won a Grammy for it.
The drum production still stands up to anything released today, the sound is immense
Drums are becoming too overproduced now.
@@dantovey2785 One can feel the impact of every snare hit in this album. Top tier mixing.
Andy Wallace's a master of his craft.

I was fortunate enough to see Slayer my 29th time at their Last show ever 11/30/19 L.A.
I needed this, thank you God..... for South of Heaven. 🤣😂🤣😂

That feeling you were trying to describe in the beginning I call "Mothermilk"! As in that energy and feeling "Damn! I needed that!" a healing, release, almost soul healing for my rage = Mothers Milk! Listening to metal is like a pressure release valve that let's me get back to giddy.
The other thing y'all didn't seem to get the context of when y'all listened to Raining Blood or when the guitars get fernetic are specifically designed for those of us the that thrive in the aggression of the PIT!
Slayer are KNOWN for their pits, the violence, musical journey would build up and the speed would inspire us. They were the architects or our movements through the whirling dervish of our elbows, fists and feet, churning, and grinding in a tempest of young men (and occassionally women) releasing our pent up rage in controlled chaos with in the code of the pit! It was and is truly cathartic!
I really appreciate you two taking the time to educate yourselves on so many genera of metal! The way you give things a real change and recognize some music is from an era and may not stand the test of time. "You had to be there!" It's really cool!
