Dude, the most difficult thing about loving Slayer is that no-one else will ever fill that void...
Theodore Vasilopoulos I know what you mean except I’m like that with 80’s Metallica
Dirk Diggler I’ve never even heard of Electric Wizard.
Dirk Diggler I will. And don’t worry. I never EVER listen quietly
Dirk Diggler Any song recommendations for my first song?
Dirk Diggler hell ya. Thanks man! So they’re considered doom metal/rock?
I still remember when this was Slayer's "new" album. It stayed in my car's cassette deck for a solid year. Those were the days.
My buick just ate that tape. I'd had that tape for like 20 years. RIP
Back then you just listened to an album over and over and over again... you poured over the lyrics and liner notes.... it was like discovering a treasure.
When I saw them live on this tour, it was the first time I ever drank alcohol. Fascinating experience in hell LOL.
@@fredflinstime6676 awesome show.
ruinsane100
I remember seeing the magazine Thrasher’s interview with Slayer right after South Of Heaven was released...I still have that mag
RIP Jeff, he wrote all the greatest slayer songs.
That opening riff is just killer... nothing says, "Abandon hope, all ye who enter" quite like that.
lol this song would fit right in a dantes inferno movie
Nice
As above, So below
@@glados2870 loved that movie
@@teamatfort444 Wouldn't fit better than Iced Earth's song that is very literally based on, and named after, Dante's Inferno.
Dave Lombardo is a HUGE reason for Slayer being Slayer. One of the best drummers ever in metal. Angel of Death next...RIP Jeff.
Cimerians they aren’t the same band without him
Fuk yeahhh...
Dave Lombardo man.a beast
His kick drum sound on that album was the greatest thing I had ever heard. Probably one of the top 10 drum sounds of all time .
and jeff too
So many tracks on South of Heaven have killer groove.
Read Between The Lies and Ghosts of War are two of my all time favorites
Their version of Dissident Aggressor takes Priest's original and works that groove. So heavy.
wvusmc like all of them!
@@jamr68 Dissident Aggressor has some mad groove and Spill the Blood has got the nastiest riff Slayer's ever put out in my opinion
wvusmc 💯 And their best produced album Audio wise to this day.
"That moment when Ryan and George realize that fast does NOT equal "Heavy". That Beat, that Groove. Slow and Heavy WINS THE RACE !!" These guys GET IT
Finally someone got it! Cathedral's debut album for instance is heavier than any jack-hammer, blast-beat technical death metal today.
@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119 well almost every pantera album is the definition of the greatest heavy shit over groove rhythms, i think their the kings
I think for maximum heaviness you need tempo dynamics. Not just slow and heavy but the onslaught up beat tempo.
@@TallicaMan1986 suicide note pt.2 is the pinnacle of that shit bro.. so many changes, riffs, rhythms and insane vocals
Exactly
I've never been a big Slayer fan, but this is one of their songs that I've always liked. I'm not sure why Raining Blood always gets requested as a first listen. Maybe it's for the shock factor, but this is a much better introduction to Slayer in my opinion
Craven I agree 100%
Totally! My first listen to Slayer was RIB and I hated it - took it back for a refund! Two ywears later I heard this and "got it". Loved the whole SOH album. Then when I went back to Reign? It was like uncut heroin. I GOT. IT. Big time.
This was my first listen to Slayer. I knew nothing about them at all. And it was a few years after this release I think it was 1990. I had just gotten use to the fast tempos that Ryan doesn’t like so my ears were ready. George’s reaction was very similar to mine. I remember thinking “this is it, this is the sound I’ve been looking for” after hearing this I heard Seasons then Reign in Blood. So I got three new Slayer records in three months that was an interesting three months to say the least.
My point is if George did hear this song first there is a good chance Raining Blood wouldve been a lot better for him. His reaction was still good though. George needs to watch the Dave Lombardo cam videos to see how Lombardo is doing what he does. I think his reaction to that will be even more intense.
Agree. When slayer slows it down this groove appears and it's much better
I was at the first clash of the Titans in Earls Court when Slayer played this the roof came off!
Even Dave Mustaine looked impressed
The final Slayer tour is starting up, they will be in Vegas, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you guys go and see a live SLAYER show.
I totally agree!
Shawn Kernen more like ending
+Lost in Vegas The tickets for the floor are $75 all-in, guys. Jump on it while they last!
@Kyle Saito THIS is the final leg of the tour that just got announced. most big tours that go longer than a year need to have different legs of dates announced at different times because of how far in advance they can book shows.
I saw them at the Monster of Rock tour back around 1992. The most memorable part of that whole concert was when everything went dark and inverted red crosses were floating over the crowd. That is permanently etched in my mind.
Dave Lombardo is one of the greatest metal drummer of all time
Arvind Shastri yep!
Second only to Danny Carey
And then he joined Testament
@@devilsephiroth9000 I know he recorded The Gathering with Testament. Testament is my favourite band
He made a large contribution to the development of metal, but today there are hundreds or even thousands of drummers who can absolutely shit on Dave, but in technique and composition.
You guys head-banging to Slayer and saying “I needed this for my soul” just makes me so happy! Thank you guys! Go see Slayer in Vegas! It’s a cathartic experience. 🤘🏽
Easily top 3 slayer songs
black magic by them is probably my favorite as of now haha
@@brandonbelcher2815 Black Magic completely got me hooked on slayer. That first riff got me 😂🤘🏻

Crionics = most underrated gem in Slayer's catalogue
Dead skin mask
Slayer is playing in vegas in November. You guys should go check them out live! It's their last tour.
Ooof
You stink
It's a must for them!!!!
Saw them last August and they are still killin it. By far the best show I've ever seen.
Yeah guys, MANDATORY.
Jason Rogers Not to be a damper. It probably would still be okay. Not the same without Dave Lombardo and Jeff Hanneman. R.I.P Jeff!!!
One of the best things about this music is that it was released in an era when it was sooooo taboo. During the satanic scare (aka satanic panic) of the 80's, you had to hide this music from your parents, and that just amplified the intrigue and adrenaline. The era made the music even better knowing you weren't supposed to be listening to it.
Hector René Segovia The taboo is the whole attracting factor for me, bad things are so much fun
I grew up with a Christian Ex Metalhead Mother, who told me not to listen to this. This band changed my life
Yes indeed! That satanic scare even spread over to the Dungeons and Dragons game. My friend's mom thought we were doing something evil when we got together to play.
@@terryr9052 lol right and how ridiculous is that?
Lol even though slayer isn't really satanic Tom araya is even a catholic
I related with George so much when he said he needed a song like this. The groove and energy of this song wakes you up and causes positive emotion to surge through your body. Thank you for your content and honest analysis of music. Rock on 🤘🤘
It's definitely one of my most played Slayer songs. Can't get enough.
"Thank you, Slayer, I needed this today!"
Classic.
The end transits directly into Silent Scream. Try it at home just for fun
fronthorse .......right on. Silent Scream is my fav track on that album. Can't listen to one without the other lol.
Exactly.
Should've just ripped right into Silent Scream.
Just got tix for Slayer, Primus, Ministry, and Phil Anselmo(doing PanterA songs)...slightly excited🤘👊
Silent Scream is my favorite Slayer song. Its fantastic.
It does very well for raining blood 2
Yeah great song
Interesting note. Kerry King the lead guitarist for Slayer played the guitar on the Beastie Boys song No Sleep Till Brooklyn
Yea they were recording Reign in Blood down the hall. Def Jam Records Put out Reign in Blood and South of Heaven.
You Mean Rhythm Guitarist? Jeff Was Very Obvious The Lead Guutarist
@@mistersunshine1330 They both were actually joint lead and rythmn I think if you look in the booklets it just says guitars
Waffe Godiator Jeff had more leads but they generally went back and forth with solos
I mean he comes out in the music video playing the solo
Slayer - "At Dawn They Sleep" is often an overlooked gem. Would love for you to review that song.
Linda Baldwin one of my favorites
Yes! At Dawn they Sleep and Chemical Warfare are two of my favorites
Haunting the Chapel is a hidden gem of a song
Their grooviest song. Amazing!!!
kill kill kill kill KILL KILL KIIIILLLLL
Slayer - Dead Skin Mask is a great song by them, the song's lyrics are based off of Ed Gein
For as fucked up as it is it's ridiculously catchy I used to hum it in class lol
One of my personal favorites
There's an amazing early 90s live video on youtube from that song.
Ed Gein was the inspiration for Leatherface but he was far from 'the Leatherface killer'. He only killed two women. He was a demented old man who robbed graves mostly and turned the body parts into household items. They found skin stitched together to create some sort of 'clothing'. TCM had nothing to do with the Ed Gein case
Gein, Wisconsin
Almighty DAVE LOMBARDO on the drums. God of percussions.
TheSoH album is drum wise, by far the best thrash metal record. Perfectly produced and played. All those fills and rythms on Ghosts of war, read between lies, crooked cross...my fave Slayer record
I don't know much about drumming, but I liked the gradual shifts in tempo.
Dave and Neil Peart
Neil Peart stands alone. Kreiger
Pretty sure someone who writes for Archer Loves Rush. Lol
Hey Ludovic M. check out DimeBag Darrel's *Lost Song* Produced by Dave Lombardo. It will make your skin get goosebumps and i know guitars since my very 1st concert at 13 was Feb. 1982 *Diary of a Madman featuring The one the only *Randy Rhoads*
mandatory suicide is another good one on this album
When did suicide become mandatory? I miss the meeting lol
You seen how much those T-shirt for that song are going for now? $500 up in some cases! I can't believe I threw mine in the bin years ago (although I did wear it to death).
Man, the drums on mant.suicide KILL. Liberal's fills are tight!!!! 😎
*Lombardo
clearly, every song on this album!
This song is a tradition in Ohio to play with my friends at 12:00 midnight every, new years eve. It has to be played extra loud and it's the first song of the new year we have been hearing for decades. I think it resets us.
Raining blood was DEFINITELY too soon for you guys. Jumped right into the deep end on that one 😎👍. More Lamb of God plz!
The gut punches of Dave Lombardo really make that work so well
Jeff Spangler Well said
Dave Lombardo on drums, just a genius. Such a great song.
Jeff Hannemann the mystic behind Slayer"s magesty
This was the first Slayer song I ever heard, and it opened my eyes to so much. I'm so glad to see you guys reacting to it!!!

The kick drums on this album sounds amazing. Rick Rubin and Andy Wallace should of won a Grammy for it.
The drum production still stands up to anything released today, the sound is immense
Drums are becoming too overproduced now.

Andy Wallace's a master of his craft.
Still one of the best sounding drum productions I’ve heard to this very day. Drums sound absolutely killer. They sound clear, but raw and warm at the same time. That deep ass solid thumping bass drum with the powerful deep snare. That noisy, trashy hi hat and glaring crystal clear ride are equally stunning

That sick double bass/tom fill after the solos gets me every time. Amazing shit.
I'm sure they wouldn't like it.
Probably not since they didn't like Raining Blood and Angel of Death is on the same album. But they still asked people to send them stuff anyways, even if they might not like it.
They seem to like stuff from Season on forward, which is understandable.

FUCKIN SLAAAYYYYEEERRRR!!!!!!! Saw them in Toronto back in May 2018. Great time!
I can't hear one note of this song without grinning ear to ear. I've seen Slayer so many times over the years going back to the 90s. When this song gets played it's electric. Like a shockwave through the crowd. Hearing this so loud you feel every crunchy riff in your bones as the entire place screams so loud they momentarily blow their voices out "BEFORE YOU SEE THE LIGHT, YOU MUST DIE!" Then every head in the place headbanging as one. Last Slayer show I attended the guy standing next to me go so excited he hugged me so hard we landed on the ground and didn't even notice as he bounced back on his feet to grab the person on the other side of him screaming the lyrics with them.
I was fortunate enough to see Slayer my 29th time at their Last show ever 11/30/19 L.A.

South of heaven was the album that make them stars. 1989 huge year for trash. so far so good so what by megadeth made them stars as well. my 2 fav albums from 88/89.
It's funny how I've heard that people disliked it when it first came out, because it was a step down from Reign In Blood speed wise. But damn, it is actually a verrry consistent album. Easily in their top 3 albums.

Seeing you guys headbanging in unison to Slayer is magical
They like groove in metal. I can't think of a better example than White Zombie - Thunder Kiss 65
Electric head pt1 (agony)
White Zombie - Black Sunshine had more of a groove IMO.
Lol, i can think of way better shit then that garbage
Super Charger Heaven, white zombie🤙🏻
@@TheThanosquest the whole astroman 2000 album is in my opinion the best from zombie in general from white zombie and his own rob zombie
The harmonic feedback at the end always gives me the chills.
