I’m trying to watch as much as I can I do enjoy your reactions.. I would like to see you react to a woman in Thrash .. Agnostics Business Suits and Combat Boots
One of my favorite albums ever! Should have picked a different song though, like Desperate Cry. Do another Between the Buried and Me!!! Please!!! The one y’all did was NOT a good starting point for them...
@@clashcor_4685 White Walls or Selkies are good starting points for sure
One main thing about Sepultura that George was spot on about when he says it's very street-raw is that Sepultura came from a large city in Brazil and played heavy music as a reaction to the outright corruption they lived through that ranged from everything to crooked cops to government officials to church clergy. They were a protest band, and their early music is almost too raw for that exact reason. Kudos to George for recognizing that!
Igor Cavalera (brother of the former vocalist/rhythm guitarist Max Cavalera) the Drummer, was a bit more technical (before "Roots"), and the violent riffage is what put Sepultura on the map, especially for me on this album. Again, imagine thousands of longhairs headbanging and starting a tornado in the slam-pit! They were from a pretty rough city in Brazil, so it reflects in the sound and lyrics.
There is a LOT of "polished" Thrash too Ryan, they usually have a more Progressive take on Thrash too (like early Annihilator), a bit more complex, and are more underground or very obscure. George was sure gettin' into it though! "No Mercy" . . .
If you thought Inner Self is chaotic, listen to the title track of "Arise" (my fave track), that is one dangerous slam-pit!
Also, it took me a few months to get into Sepultura, when my younger brother introduced this album to me after its release. It was yet another step into Extreme Metal that I got used to, and wanted to explore further. There are MUCH more "chaotic"/complex bands out there - this song is actually pretty tame. But we Metalheads had to start somewhere to get used to the brutality, abrupt changes and complexities.
. . . But I HOPE both you guys keep going, keep discovering and just taking it all in and coming to your own conclusions.
But let's scare Ryan even further ;D: From Germany; *Kreator* - "Betrayer", ""Extreme Aggression", "As the Sun Burns Red", for a reaction?
For the more Progressive (including polished), and complex Thrash, Death Metal and more . . .

That freaking nailed it.
No early 80s Metallica no Sepultura though, Metallica invented this shit damn near 40 years ago.Younger people just don't realize how underground and heavy Metallica were in the early 80s.

Hands down the best of Sepultura to me!! “Desperate Cry” is such an awesome song!
They're Brazilian. English wasn't their first langue. They are an amazing band. They are pioneers of Death/Thrash/Black Metal. Gods!
I feel like they dont get as much credit for their influence on death/black metal.
I think that was part of the appeal. It made the lyrics and Max’s phrasing so unique and visceral.
What about groove metal??

I still have the MTV Headbangers Ball VHS video. Its unmixed and so pure and raw. The official release didn't have that crushing tone. Its still unbelievable.

One thing that makes "raw" bands like Sepultura more understandable is knowing the history of rock/metal. Rock in the 70s split into two camps with polar opposite aesthetic philosophies: prog wanted to bring sophistication to rock, and punk wanted to keep things raw, basic, and primal. Thrash began as a combination of punk's raw speed and aggression with the growing compositional complexity of bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. That push-pull between fans who liked the rawness/aggression and fans who liked the compositional complexity is a constant one in metal. I think you guys, like most, appreciate the middle ground. You tend not to like stuff that's just all raw aggression (like this), nor stuff that's all about complexity/sophistication (like Metropolis Pt. 1). Perhaps a big part of Metallica's success is precisely that they struck a perfect middle ground between both; they could be raw, heavy, fast, but they would also temper that with greater melodicism, softer passages, groovier sections, even classical or bluesy touches. This way, neither element outstayed their welcome, and even had greater impact when one came on the heels of the other.
Excellent explanation!
dub! 👍👍👍
Make no mistake about it... Metallica is the father and Godfather of thrash metal. Their "Kill 'em All" album was the album that ushered in and introduced "thrash" metal to the world as we know it.
This may be one of the most succinct and intelligent explanations of the genre I've ever read. Tip of the hat to you sir!
cavman250 No mistakes have been made. His explanation is perfect.
"This sounded like chaos" lol Ryan, you know that's a compliment to Metal right? Great video guys!
Sepultura even have an album called Chaos AD. lol
I don't agree actually. There are many fantastic Thrash songs that get somewhat ruined by weird chaotic subsections or solos (looking at you, Kerry King).
@@JHorsti I'm totally with you. I hear one guy say that is to encourage a mosh session. I don't know, just listening it's seems unnecessary a lot of times. But to each their own.
@@JHorsti But there are times it's totally called for. Check out a song called Terminator by a thrash band called Magnus. That solo is chaos, but it's awesome.
I don't think it's chaos, it's just heavy and brutal. It's actually very well structured
George was dead on when he compared this to pure roots rap music. The band spoke about the real threat of being shot on a daily basis. They have friends and family that had been shot. There was also a lot of discontent with the Brazilian government at the time when they were making these records, so all this came out in their music. It also has a very raw production because this was limit of the studio they were in at the time, but I think it adds to the aggression. They said that their music and the band was a way for them to escape the despair they experienced on a daily basis in their Brazilian neighbourhood.
You sir took the words out of my mouth.
Just one minor point. While this album was still recorded in Brazil, which means equipment wasn't cutting edge, they did have the mad genius Scott Burns producing it.

This album is an absolute masterpiece!
😎🤝
To me personally, it doesn't get any heavier than early Sepultura, and the talent with the original lineup remains incomparable. They were absolute mad men together. Yes, this is pure uncompromised Thrash. I'm a seasoned fan of the genre, but the more I dive into it, the more I question the Big Four.
Side note: Sepultura started adding more groove elements with their next album Arise. Later records, Chaos AD and Roots went down a more experimental route, while staying true to their sound. You guys should check those out too!
Try 'Territory' from their Chaos A.D. album. It's still raw Sepultura, but tightened up, and they integrated more tribal beats into their style.
That's terrible to be fair. More commercial than others albums and the sound is not as good
Monkeyfarm yeah that’s when they immediately went down hill.
Call it commercial, call it the beginning of the end, call it whatever you want. That song still kicks ass and I think LIV would like it too.
That song is VERY horrible..
Chaos AD is when they sold their soul and basically ended as a valuable musical band. No wonder MTV bombed us with the advertisments of that album during that year.
The best part is that Inner Self is the "mid-paced" song of the album. The rest of the majority of it is absolutely blistering with speed!
Sepultura is such an unique and epic Thrash Metal band!! Love them ✨
This was the song that got me into sepultura...brutal,groovy and primal..in my opinion, old sepultura is the greatest thrash metal band for me.
Definitely one of the tops
Totally agree
With you on this
Arise is one of my favourite albums
First song I ever heard from them, was instantly hooked haha
I LOVE this song and album. Beneath The Remains is probably my all-time fave thrash album, in fact. Thanks for reacting to a bit of it! Like George said, it’s just so heavy in a visceral, primal way that’s hard to find. Yet it also has some rockin’ punkish groove and some pockets of melody to it that in my opinion also make it eminently listenable. That’s why I was surprised Ryan didn’t get into it a little bit since he liked Dead Embryonic Cells. But I appreciate the honest first impression. Personally, I have awesome memories of blasting this while walking down the street on cold nights as a rebellious teenager. This shit kept me warm, headbanging during the mid-tempo riffs and then full-on sprinting during the fast parts haha. Cheers, and can’t wait to see what else Thrash Week holds!
Thomas Cosumar I agree. That album changed my Life. I don’t know if it’s my favorite trash album cause it’s difficult for me to choose between Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets and Peace Sells but who’s buying... 🤔
1. Sepultura-Beneath the Remains
2.Exodus-Bonded by Blood
3.Megadeth-Peace sells...
4.Kreator-Pleasure to Kill
5.Artillery-By Inheritance (Ryan would love this one)
I remember listening to Chaos A.D. when I was 13, and thought it was the dirtiest thing ever. Then a friend of mine lent me a copy of Beneath the Remains. Completely different, but i can listen to both from beginning to end.
Beneath the Remains was my gateway metal album. I still have a special place in my heart for it!
I picked up this album from a used CD shop when I was in 6th grade, and it blew me away. Inner Self and Beneath the Remain are, IMO, 2 of the best thrash metal songs of all time
Entombed “Left Hand Path”!
I don't get why people just keep and keep and keep and keep on requesting songs they won't like. What don't you understand.
Don't get we wrong, Left Hand Path is a masterpiece for me, but they're obviously hate the shit out of it.
These guys need groove. From Sepultura, give them Territory or Propaganda.
TheAskald because the whole point is to expand their musical horizons. They are still discovering a new band and just because they don’t like one song doesn’t mean they’ll dislike everything.
@@johnwebb3078 No, the whole point is to see them enjoy what we enjoy, at least for me. Seeing Ryan with a dead bored face the whole video is boring and that's not what I search personally. I've been watching this channel since september 2017 and there's clearly a pattern, especially with Ryan. He loves mid tempo groovy metal.
Yet here we are with people still requesting stuff like Left Hand Path...
I could make the perfect list of metal songs he would enjoy (The Conjuring from Megadeth was a really obvious one, glad the community suggested it, one of the greatest metal riffs...).
TheAskald I’ve been watching it for a long time and i understand the type of stuff they usually like, but what’s the point of doing unbiased opinions on different types of music if you’re just going to like everything? Should they just go through every Rush song?
@@johnwebb3078 You made a good point, but I think that requests must hit that sweet spot between something relatively new to do them, but at the same time still something they'll like. And for example Left Hand Path is even far more thrashy than Inner Self that was already far too much for them. Anyways
I loved so much George's reaction and the analogy with raw hip hop. Context sometimes is everything, right? That's what I call free thinker.
Cheers from Brazil!
Ironically, Ryan's description is exactly why this appeals to many people.
Yeah I was waiting for the offensive part of his critique.

Anything off Chaos AD would work. Territory and Slave New World are both great choices for non-metal fans.
Chaos A.D is a great gateway record for people new or inexperienced to metal. It's heavy, it's chock full of great riffs and has a great tone, but it's also fairly simplistic, not too overbearing and produced well enough/clear enough so as to not sound really raw.
Perfect example of a song that their fans and/or Patreon supporters should be requesting. Territory is groovy and would hook them easily.
This is one of my fav early Sep tracks... Yes on Territory and ChaosAd in general but I do not downplay the accessibility of that album vs their earlier work. Yes it’s not as aggressive and raw and relentless but it’s so solid from start to finish and for me one of my all time favorites. I recommend Refuse and Resist and my fav overlooked Sep. song ... This is one of the more amusing videos you guys have posted. I love how different your reactions are.
I think with a lot of metal you have to see it in the context of its time too. I was a teen when these guys blasted onto the scene in 1989 and they weren't much older than me, lol. There was nothing remotely like them in England, where I live, or even the US at the time I think. Sure there were fast thrash and death metal bands, but these guys had complicated, heavily intricate and melodic music, heavily-accented English and a raw Brazilian mystique. Because they represented the Brazil that few see - esp. in the 1980s - when all you got was images of tourists playing beachball on Copacabana, carnivals or bikini-clad women. These were the street kids like us - growing up with not much, just football, old bikes and music. So they were really special to me. I think these early days were their best times tbh. They gelled, there was no interband fighting and splits (that came much later). They had 'Schizophrenia' (1987) and 'Morbid Visions' (1986) out on vinyl before this album. But it was this one that really propelled them onto the international scene.
Desperate cry fellas. That's gotta be in their top 5 best songs.
🇧🇷 As a brazilian, something I just realized is that I think these guys spoke some pretty good English for their time. Back in 1989, just a few brazilians spoke English, and they didn't know it that well. I think it's kind of surprising to hear lyrics like "inner self" and "filfthy ways" (expressions which are not obvious to non native speakers) from some brazilian guys in the 80's, when there was no Google translate or online dictionaries.
Vinicius Leão de Almeida true
I partly agree.... I believe that once they went into playing in english, they have to do it as good as a native speaker would.... For us brasilians, songs in english, even when we understand english, we care most about the rhytm more than the lyrics itself. For them native speakers, maybe the lyrics sounds raw or even childish. For sure, nowadays sepultura would work far better on this song lyrics. Id love to know what a gringo would say after listening to bestial devastation, troops of doom.... 😄
What's amazing to me is that I actually find Max easier to decipher than most English speaking growly metal singers.. you'd think the opposite would be true, but perhaps BC it's not his 1st language, he has to focus more on what he's saying.. all I know is that he's always been, and always will be awesome. Definitely one of the all-time greats of both metal growling vocals, and rhythm guitar.. big up to 🇧🇷, hope I get to visit one day!
I love, respect, and appreciate both of your opinions, great review!!

@@luisamoa2500 Yep. I can appreciate the instrumentation in some heavier stuff but let's face it, death metal isn't timeless. Gojira is probably the closest thing to being timeless in that type of genre. A big reason for that is because you can understand what they're saying, even in their heavy stuff and they also have songs with clean vocals. Just my opinion, of course.

thank you thank you for doing this !!!!
Wow! I haven't heard this for probably close to 30 years! I saw Sepultura live for this album. I don't remember who they were on tour with. maybe they opened for Nuclear Assault? I was never a big Sepultura fan, but my friends were... so this definitely brought back memories. Thanks Ryan and George for bringing back the memories.
I think Ryan likes groove more than thrash. Thrash can be very groove oriented but it isnt necessarily required to be thrash. I've noticed he generally dislikes the non groovy-fast parts of thrash songs
He would like Pantera for sure.
They should give Cathedral a chance lol
I love thrash myself it's one of my favorite types of music. The groove to me is the best part of thrash. I don't mind the chaos do that too but I wouldn't like thrash if that's all it was. It absolutely needs the groove for it to be great thrash!
You need to react to Death-Voice of the Soul!!!
YES!
If it doesn't bring a tear you have NOT arrived yet guys
Spirituuuaalll healiiiing!
Anything off Leprosy.
Sepultura era demais... Esse som da bateria do Igor é simplesmente maravilhoso.
I was a casual teenager, looking for something, when that very song hit my life. That was the start of it all.
So funny. This is the most polarized I've seen you two.
Totally true! Ryan was so apologethic. If you don't like a song, you don't like a song. Enough said
@@enriqueplanas Well said.
React to DESPERATE CRY for a even better version of Sepultura. More like Dead Embryonic Cells!
Com certeza a música que mais escutei até hoje do sepultura. Até 93 o sepultura foi o "suprasumo" do thrash old school. Orgulho nacional!! hugs from brazil!!!
Free thinking man... keep up the good work.
Demolition Hammer - Skull Fracturing Nightmare
Absolutely
Oh hell yes!
Don't forget Pyroclastic Annihilation!
Can't go wrong with some DH. I'd recommend Aborticide or 44 caliber brain surgery.
Human Dissection
This album is about Brazilian Poverty.
9:55 for me is exactly how I feel with some bands that are other wise held as Greats.
I think the song means the Inner Self of those who live in Poverty and how some become selfish, or tread the wrong path due to circumstance. This is rebellious for Brazilians. These dudes lived in the slums and they were pissed off at it. This is very similar to Hip Hop in this regard. It's a lot more cryptic and at time more direct, but it's the same idea. It's like a metal version of Liquid Swords.
also ya'll need a blue screen if you gunna have a dark background cuz Ryan can't contain his Hulk.
❤️❤️❤️💪💪💪
The Cavaleras were actually from an affluent family. Their dad was a diplomat. I'm sure Paulo Jr. And Andreas Kisser were not poor by any means, either.
@@BayStatePrepper You might actually want to read up on that. The Cavaleras were going through a financial crisis after their father died when Max was like 9. So whatever wealth he had experienced definitely wasnt there in his teens.
The other two were well off though.
Patreon here! Just going over some of you old videos, I love old sepultuta, they were so important to me growing up and I respect your ability to appreciate this song, gritty production and raw thrash but to my ears growing up it was just magical. I have leaned so heavily on music over the years and it’s so nice to see people seeing what I see in the music. I hope I can continue to learn and grow my own musical tastes throughout the years, you guys are certainly inspirational there. If you happen to read this please consider the thrash band Heathen and the Aussie rock band my dynamite. But either way you have a subscriber for as long as you want to do this.
Damn!!!! this song brought me back... Classic!!
Sepultura were influenced by death metal as well. So they're definitely the heavier end of thrash.
Death/Thrash
I think Sepultura influenced death metal more than the other way around. They were at their rawest when they begin, and there were no death metal bands at the time, they were the pioneers (of something nowadays known as war metal, to be fully precise). It makes more sense to say that they were influenced by thrash, later, when Andreas Kisser entered the band and they created their death/thrash sound.
Sepultura was one of the first bands doing that, they influenced Death not the other day around. They can also be considered among the first wave of black metal as well, even the first singer from Sepultura left the band to form Sarcófago, one of the first Black Metal bands, they were the first ones doing corpse paint. These guys were WAY ahead of the curve.
@@YannickTMessiah You're right, Sepultura were influenced by thrash bands, like Metallica and Slayer, and bands that people nowadays would describe as proto-black metal or proto-death metal like Venom, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost and Possessed. Their first album "Bestial Devastation" is one of the earliest releases that can be considered pure death metal.
We need more Sepultura! It's been too long!
Keep doing the great job guy's I love you guys
SEPULTURA DO BRASIL!
They are revolutionaries because of the percussion. As brazillians they have several influences in percussion.
Desperate Cry sepultura. Talladega nights, the wreck at the end when only 2 were left.
i always thought their albums in the late 80s early 90s had the drums mixed to pummel you. they hit so hard in the speakers like a hammer against a wooden door. love it
You guys are so cool!
Ryan, I give you so much credit for simply being objective enough to listen and give it a shot. You looked like you wanted to enjoy it but just couldn't really get into it. But that's cool because it's honest. and George....every one of Lost in Vegas reviews I've seen, you kill me. I love your analogies and sense of humor. Frickin' adorbs! You guys are DA BEST!!! much love and respect to both of you
Everyone: LiStEn tO tHiS oThEr SoNg InStEaD
This is my favorite thrash band ever and as good as it gets imo. I’m glad you guys were able to keep an open mind towards some other genres of music. Consider reviewing Testament - Disciples Of The Watch
Y’all are FN hilarious with this. Sepultura is the bomb. I love y’all!
That was the best reaction I’ve ever seen, I loved that George saw the beauty in that song
