That combo of this song going into Silent Scream instantly taught me everything I needed to know about the Slayer and I’ve been addicted since, almost 20 years later.

"South of Heaven" by Slayer is a vivid exploration of the concept of sin, morality and individual judgment. The lyrics discuss the idea that while unspoken sins and immoral behaviors exist, they are often overlooked and ignored. The song takes a dark look at the consequences of not facing up to these sins and how our actions may end up leading us to a dark and unforgiving place. The overall theme throughout the song is that if we do not work towards peace and understanding of our flaws, we will end up discovering for ourselves the true consequences of our misdeeds.

While I'm no longer a religious person, I grew up going to church every Sunday back in the late 1970's to early1980's. When I reached the age to rebel (13-ish) I still wouldn't listen to Slayer because it was "Devil Music"...Until I heard South of Heaven when I was hanging out with the "bad kids" under the bridge smoking (y'know, because I was rebelling). So how does the dude (who may or may not have mad hat game) know that if I give him money, I will make it through judgement day? He doesn't, because he also hasn't yet died. The rest of that song just goes on to describe how you and I are here based on the old testament's story. It then ends the whole thing by saying that if anyone is in charge and watching, they're probably not doing so for altruistic purposes. There's a lot of depth to this simple "devil music" song.
