As a metal enthusiast, I love your channel, Beth. It's fun to watch you explore the genre a bit. I HIGHLY recommend making a video of Candlemass with their singer Messiah Marcolin. He's simply a legend. Sort of like a metal opera singer. Definitely a unique talent. I'd love to hear your analysis.
One of the great things about Tom Araya's vocals is that he is generally VERY clear and understandable, despite the speed of the music. I really enjoyed this reaction/analysis; now please do Angel of Death; you'll end up talking about the opening vocal for like 8 minutes. :D
If you have something to say, it is better off to be clear to have it picked. It is a problem with many metal bands that are on the more extreme side. Grunt grunt GRUUUNT, grunt grunt....
seeing slayer always brings a smile to my face, and fun fact: in one of their last shows here in Brazil, they were playing War ensemble and the sound of the place just shut off in the middle of the song, the only thing making sound was the drums (but only the acoustic sound), the people in the pit begin to sing out loud from there to the end, and you could see Araya happiness to see the people finishing the song for him
Oooh boy! You can't overstate the influence of Slayer and early Metallica (and others) on the history of metal. They kicked 80's "hair metal" in the throat and inspired a thousand bands to form and explore faster and nastier sounds.
I'm a huge extreme metal fan, especially death metal and thrash metal. I got this on cassette as an Xmas gift from my grandparents back in high school (I graduated in 1988), hearing your critique on this is such a great experience. I've found a lot of folks with musical backgrounds like you are actually less judgemental about this music. I had a co-worker at one shop that would actually react to my music a lot like you do, she was more interested in their techniques than giving me those evil looks I'm so used to! She genuinely liked Death (my favorite band), and VoiVod (although I don't consider VoidVod extreme, some of their older stuff is more thrash like), and was a joy to discuss music with. Love the channel, and love seeing you cover music like this!
I really like Death too. :) I had a bunch of CD:s and I kinda forgot about them. Thanks for the reminder. :) Also I'd like to say how heartwarmingly wholesome the story about your grandparents was. I'm picturing two kind elderly people going to a record store asking for the new Slayer album "Reign in Blood" on cassette for their grandson's graduation... :)
I used to listen to metal (mostly mainstream) with little or no thrash. Tried death metal and could never get into it. Over time my tastes have migrated to more funk/r&b/hip-hop but I always find myself appreciating the musicianship of thrash. I recall watching Dark and listening to Kreator Pleasure to Kill. It evoked such a visceral emotion of dislike and hate in me but when I gave it a second listen I loved the speed and precision of the drums (the video is utterly bonkers though)
Tomás Enrique Araya Díaz, the vocalist, born in Viña del Mar, Chile, appears with a national football team T-shirt, because the day before, June 21st, 2010, Chile defeated 1:0 Switzerland in the 2010 South Africa World Cup.
You missed an opportunity to see a live performance of this song in which they get covered in "blood" as it rains down from above. It is quite surreal.
It was so much fun to watch and and listen to Beth break down and jam out to Slayer!! I got to see Arch Enemy open for Slayer at Harpos in Detroit back in 2004, it was an awesome show! 🤘
I saw Slayer three times in open air festivals including this show also and every single time rain was pouring. And it made the concert even more epic and better.
Much love Beth. Cattle Decapitation-Scourge of the Offspring or A Photic Doom. Travis Ryan’s vox has evolved into something more amazing. We know you’d appreciate it.
Another great reaction and analysis, Beth! For Tom's next trick, I would suggest Necrophobic, from the same album. It won't take long : two verses, three choruses, guitar solo, all in 1'38". It's an exercise in diction if ever I heard one.
I am, or used to be a stutterer. Respitory therapy was far more useful to me than usual logopedics. My therapist was a retired opera singer who taught stutterers the use of the force of their diaphragms. And it did learn me some basics about vocal strengths as well. Since I'm a soft-spoken low key voiced kinda person. I used to have difficulty raising my voice, well, not anymore. 😂 Although that doesn't make me a good metal vocalist. 😅
Great reaction! React, analyze other Slayer's masterpiece: "Angel of Death"...The ideal would be to analyze the studio version...Greetings from Brazil!!!
Actually got to hear this live a couple weeks ago when Kerry King did it with his new group. Never thought I'd hear this song live and my life feels complete now.
I'm not a huge Slayer fan, but Reign In Blood is such a brilliant album over all. When you put it on (yeah, we did "put on" LP records back then lol) it musically kinda feels like one big story divided in short explosive parts. And then suddenly it's over. A true classic in thrash metal and in rock music over all. Great video as usual, Beth.
If you react to Slayer live check out videos before 2009,, when Tom Araya could still headbang,,, he had a neck surgery from headbanging and couldn't headbang any more,,.. Listen to Bloodline from the War at the Warfield Live,, and Mandatory Suicide from the Still Reigning live..
Awesome. The best Slayer album, by far, along with South of Heaven. Have seen them live a couple of times, and boy do they deliver, like here. He has interesting vocals; they create an eerie atmosphere and build, and use interesting chords and melodies and progressions and time changes. As someone mentioned, what’s great is his lyrics are clear, which is difficult to do in thrash. If you didn’t completely listen to Tori Amos’ cover, you should. It’s excellent, and SO different from the original, which is also difficult to do well, in a totally different style.
You need to listen to their album "Seasons in the Abyss ". Especially the tracks: War Ensemble, Dead Skin Mask, and Skeletons of Society. Amazing instrumental performance but lyrically moving. Especially these days.
I've seen Slayer in concert 7 times and at the end of the buildup of this song and when it really kicks in, the crowd just erupts. But to be fair they have several songs where the crowd just goes nuts. I first saw them on that Big 4 tour in 1990 in Atlanta. R.I.P. Jeff
Love Slayer, so of course I was gonna come see this reaction... but.. to be honest, I initially thought that was Weird Al Yankovic in the preview thumbnail and definitely wanted to see him performing the song.....
Beth, I know you're a vocal analyst but surely at least a tip of the hat to Dave Lombardo on drums! The rhythmic changes he brings through his feet I believe, and I'm no expert, take this song to the epic status that it holds.
I feel like you have to see a live Reign in Blood performance when they actually rain in blood. They typically rain blood as they play this song it’s usually a finisher to their set haha.
Thanks your analysis was very inspirational even I have listened Slayer decades. I respect your opinion because I often hear disrespect for Metal music: "It's just senless noise and growl without purpose" It's unfortunately hard and frustrating tryto explain to others what's it all about. Especially when you love Metal music so passionately. 🖤
Someone commented on a slayer video, that he likes Tom Arayas voice because it reminds him of an angry dad shouting at his kid. Which I thought was the most hilarious way of describing it.
Tomas Araya isn't just from a Chilean household, he was born in Chile. His family immigrated here when he was in early elementary school. The drummer here Dave Lombardo, escaped Cuba when he was a young boy. Another fun fact is that both of them are Christian

Was at the 'Final' LA show in 2019, kinda sad but it was time. Ya really need to hear how this Album Sounded. They'd left Metal Blade and had Def Jam produce it, top notch. Tom's range isn't anywhere near what it was in 1986, the opening scream on Angel Of Death is legendary. Thanks for the reaction, love the breakdowns and insight.

A spider bite leading to alcohol fuelled liver failure is about as metal as death gets!
The buildup to this song was what we used in D&D to indicate a difficult fight was coming. just the intro on loop until we rolled initiative.
Love that

The key to that one is picking the right version with the proper visceral scream, not one with a half ass attempt.
Dude every good thrash/death singer is understandable.
Do the original high pitched "I am the Anti Christ" and make sure that it's clearly audible to your neighbors🤘
Just not modern live versions... wither album version or Decade of Aggression!
I love Tom’s big goofy smile at the beginning 😂
I would definitely recommend the album version as well, for the eerie build-up of tension at the beginning.
Oh my goodness what a beautiful reaction Beth. I love how you explained this you are a saint!! 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻💯
This is in Sofia, Bulgaria, first ever Big Four concert. Was quite an experience. Very good memories.

Saw Slayer with a friend at a festival years ago. We knew they were heavy... but after the first song we just stood there mind-blown and laughed.
Oooh boy! You can't overstate the influence of Slayer and early Metallica (and others) on the history of metal. They kicked 80's "hair metal" in the throat and inspired a thousand bands to form and explore faster and nastier sounds.
Actually they were doing their thing before hair metal.
Thank God. Between the “New Wave” crap and the Hair Metal” without Slayer and Metallica the 80s would have been horrible music wise.
@@tjakr3869 You know bands like Iron Maiden is “New Wave,” right?
@@KlaustheViking I’m talking about flock of seagulls “New Wave”. Iron Maiden in the 80s was “run to hills” and “Number of the Beast”. Hardly new wave.
@@tjakr3869 I thought you were talking about NWOBHM.

My grandparents would have taken it away from me if they knew I had it. Your ones are clearly gold.
Saw them in 1986 at a 200 person bar on that 'Reign in Blood' tour, my 4th concert. Good stuff! Thanks for the reaction.
i saw them first time in Chicago 85 Aragon Ballroom.Venom Slayer and Exodus .i snuck in my canon AE 1 camera and have photos. What a lineup.

We are The Best Country from Chile Hermanito! ❤🇨🇱
You have to watch Tom in an interview...He's so soft spoken and he has this laugh that makes you smile
I've seen Slayer on the Reign in blood tour. This just brought a smile to my face. Especially seeing Jeff, RIP, see you on the other side!
Saw em in the hannemann days in a smallish Welsh leisure centre , the power was unreal
I saw them in 2005 with Slipknot, Hatebreed and Mastodon. Probably the best gig I've ever gone to.
I've been looking forward to this.. Amazing ❤
A lot of people struggle with Raining Blood, but you seemed to get it. Especially the end, which is supposed to be chaotic.
Great live pick and reaction🤘
Beth, I will be giving your album a listen. You’re awesome!
what a classic! great stuff in this one that I didn't know! thank you!
You headbanging says it all, love your reaction 🤘😎🤘
I'd add Sepultura to your list of bands along with the others. Also great drumming.
man none of my metal head friends understood them back in the day. i was like "fuck it man just listen" they're not english! lol
Sepultura with Max

Nice shirt, Beth. Brings back memories 🙂

I saw Slayer three times in open air festivals including this show also and every single time rain was pouring. And it made the concert even more epic and better.
Now you should react to Raining Lobsters - Bill McClintock. It's a natural follow up.
I like how he combined with Chemical Warfare mixed with KC and the Sunshine Band
That's the greatest video on YT.
Check out Repentless from their going away tour back in 2019. It's from only 5 years ago but still so good - these old dudes can rock!
Much love Beth.
Cattle Decapitation-Scourge of the Offspring or A Photic Doom.

Actually got to hear this live a couple weeks ago when Kerry King did it with his new group. Never thought I'd hear this song live and my life feels complete now.
Kerry was always the weak link , his " band " blows.
That chromatic riff reminds me a lot of Grieg’s Hall Of The Mountain King

I didn't know that about Tom Araya being a respiratory therapist before going full time with Slayer. Thats hilarious!

Definitely the quintessential thrash song from THE quintessential thrash album.
Kerry King is in his own band now (the lead guitarist) called Kerry King. Give it a shot. I saw them lives a few weeks ago.
