Roger Miller King Of The Road lyrics
Trailer for sale or rent, rooms to let fifty cents
No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah but, two hours of pushin' broom buys a
    Eight by twelve four-bit room
I'm a man of means by no means, king of the road
Third boxcar midnight train, destination Bangor, Maine
Old worn out suit and shoes, I don't pay no union dues
I smoke old stogies I have found, short but not too big around
I'm a man of means by no means, king of the road
I know every engineer on every train
All the children and all of their names
And every handout in every town
And every lock that ain't locked when no-one's around
    I sing...
Trailers for sale or rent, rooms to let fifty cents
No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah but, two hours of pushin' broom buys a
    Eight by twelve four-bit room
I'm a man of means by no means, king of the road
Trailers for sale or rent, rooms to let fifty cents
No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah but, two hours of pushin' broom buys a

In case you're interested in the history of this song. As I understand it, Roger Miller worked at the Verkamp's gift store on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. And wrote this song about the experience !!! The trailers were rented to employees, the train is the railroad from Williams Az. The reference to Bangor Maine ........ it rhymed !!! ( I once worked at the south rim, and learned this )

I always understood there was some irony and sarcasm in the lyrics, as well as a critical eye on the American dream.

For a while we lived in this tiny town in Alberta Canada - my dad found work up there during the recession in the early 70’s. Anyway this “greasy spoon” with the best poutine I’ve ever had to this day, had a jukebox and I played this song over and over. Two bits would buy me 3 songs. I’d choose king of the road, Johnny cash then king of the road again. The owners got to know us and he’d hand me a broom. Lol. I was around 6 or 7. One of my most favorite childhood memories.

On Roger Miller's website, it explains that Miller wrote this song over a 6-week span, beginning on a 1964 Midwest TV tour. He wrote the first verse when he saw a "Trailers for Sale or Rent" sign on the road outside Chicago. A few weeks later, he bought a statuette of a hobo in Boise, Idaho airport gift shop and stared at it until he had completed the song.

I remember listening to this on our old green RCA radio in our dinette in Detroit. I was already somewhat of a music fan by the time I was 3 and once The Beatles came along I was a huge music fan. This song became a hit in early 1965 when I was all of 4 1/2, and I thought it was the greatest song ever. 'Eight Days A Week' and 'This Diamond Ring' were also hits at about the same time, they were my three favorites for a bit. Back then there was so much great new music that it never took too long for another favorite to come along. Roger had quite a few on the charts back in those days, loved his voice.

Judging by the studio backdrop, this was recorded in Paris. Roger has Thumbs Carllile- playing that Telecaster on his lap and Glen D. Hardin on piano, who played with the Crickets and later Elvis and Emmylou Harris on piano. Jerry Allison played drums for Roger for a time- he enjoyed being with Roger who was just a little anarchic, an understatement I suppose. Roger recruited the best pedal steel player in the business, Buddy Emmons into his band at one point- to play bass! He wanted Buddy in the band- they had played together with Ray Price and Roger enjoyed having Buddy around!

@@KevinAtkins_Indiana I have no idea. It may have been a French star or a popular compere, or even the person that gees up the audience trying to get applause. A friend of mine was Johnny Hallyday's guitarist at this time in France. Hallyday used Shelby Singleton and his close associate Jerry Kennedy as producer at times and Jerry produced Roger Miller's records including The Return of Roger Miller which contains this monster hit. Perhaps, Hallyday was there and appeared on stage- going to congratulate Roger Miller? Just a guess but the dots are there- do they have connections?
