The MK8 GTI power numbers are definitely under rated by VW. The car is putting down 245-250 HP and 275-285 lb-ft at the wheels or around 285 HP and 315 lb-ft at the crank.
Hey Edmunds Cars, you should really fix the “As Tested” price on the GTI. Who cares, the Autobahn SLOWS down the car and adds weight, so was their weight rating off too? They should've done the DSG yeah, but guess what I've found many DSG GTI',s for 31.5K MSRP.. FYI
Strange outcome. The Elantra has better acceleration, Notably better braking distance, Better grip in skid pad testing yet loses? Not to mention the gti comes with garbage all seasons. Test was a flop imo

By the way, you shoud compare Elantra N (8-speed DCT) with others because it is faster in tracks and cheaper than others. The Elantra N can make a U-turn with only 3 wheels. Every comparisons between manual transmission cars were dependent on people and unreliable. Some comparisons may be evil intentions. Elantra N (8-speed DCT) which is easy to drive faster than Elantra N (6-speed MT). For examples of 0-100km/h times, Elantra N (8-speed DCT)~ 5.3sec, GR Corolla ~5.3sec, Civic Type R~5.4sec, Subaru(MT)~6.1sec, Elantra N(MT)~5.?sec. This video reminds me of Dieselgate. The Elantra N (8-speed DCT) is no match for the 240-hp Golf GTI. Elantra N (8-speed DCT) is faster in U-Drag even compared to Golf R.
People love to slag VW for its alleged reliability issues, although I've had six from the Mk1 all the way through the Mk6 and none of them were money pits. People just hate the fact that they're as popular as they are and when you're on top you're a target. But as good as the Koreans are getting, they've yet to truly trump these hyper Golfs. The all around space/utility, comfort, interior quality and materials and (yes, you do have to push them now...) - the potential for serious giggles when driven with gusto. They simply tick every box and this is why they are the benchmark. Are they perfect? Hell no. Are they the fastest car from light to light. Nope. The best fuel economy of any hot hatch? I'd say not. But they simply do everything so well, it's pretty much the only car you need. Not to mention that the Germans are notoriously famous for underrating their actual horsepower numbers. If the difference in these two cars was as the numbers show, this shouldn't have been the outcome. Even the base GTI, especially with the DSG, is pretty damn quick. The R is almost stupid for the segment. The only really kink is that mk8 infotainment. They definitely went backwards there

That as tested price is completely wrong for the gti. That looks like the autobahn trim which is closer to $40,000. Base trim doesn’t come with those wheels and headlights.
Gotta go GTI, more comfortable and an equal performer. I’m sure you could add some of the Elantra’s drama into the car if you really wanted to since the platform is just a newer version of the previous generation which had plenty of routes to take to add to the car.
@@mharro88the only difference this GTI had was the tires . both cars had summer tires this time unlike in previous reviews the GTI had all season. Something was amiss, the elantra n was a full 2 sec slower in this race vs its time of 36.5 against the wrx. Hard to tell with press cars, the brakes could have been glazed and the tires could have been dead after an interesting week with savagegeese. Lol
These gti owners don’t want to accept the Gti ran a slower time than the WRX and the EN ran a full second faster in the race than the Gti based off its best time during the WRX video LOL
GTI is under powered vs the "N" and still won overall. N 2 tenths faster in the quarter mile. 🙄 I don't care how fast it is, it's still a Hyundai.😆The Germans know what they are doing.🏁
I hate to say this, but this would be a better test if the cars were kept between cones during the turn around. There is too much variance on the path that be taken, thus results will be inconclusive.

I wouldn't, interior is less upscale many hard plastics, the ride is much stiffer and the NVH is much worse because it's based on a $21K Hyundai Elantra.
GTI fanboy but own a Hyundai so it’s tough but I’d go with the MK8. I had a Mk7.5 till I got in an accident. GTI always punches above its weight class! 👍🏻
I have heard that some German makers have underrated their hp figures. I recall that Mazda did that with their turbo in the 90's. And some folks say that the Type R is underrated.
Why did the guy in the EN brake so early?? The GTI stands no chance against the EN on track. The drivers just messed it up bad on both occasions 😂 you simply can't mess up and conclude the video like that. Do it properly and fairly
huh? you definitely do need to floor it quickly, and if not quickly enough, it doesn't go into launch mode. This is as per both the owner's manual and instructional video from H
No you don’t tap the gas, you mash down hard on the break then mash the accelerator all the way down. If it doesn’t initiate let off the gas then mash again, but quickly. I have an EN fyi
First race - N driver brakes way too early.(you can see gti passing N very quickly while braking.) Second race - Launch control fail. (there should have been new race for this one)
So many of these reviews on the EN are done by people that don’t actually know how to drive it. Whether it’s from the launch control or how to use the NGS button. I’ve raced GTIs in my EN DCT and gapped them by quite a bit. Using the N mode in auto isn’t where you get all the power. Using the N mode and paddle shifting in manual is where you can really push it. This race was determined by the drivers. Not the cars.
Why didn't you test manual vs manual? The Hyundai DCT just sucks! You can't get a correct data! Drive the manual vs the manual just like you guys did the N against the WRX (The one that Elantra N won). Do this again!
Why didn't this video feature the leaderboard of times like it did when they did the EN vs the Wrx? It did a 37.6 which was faster than both times in this video. What happened?
Glad I have a GTI :). and its easy to shut off traction control.. you dont need to go through all the menus to get there. there are short cuts.. would be cool if you reviewers learned that stuff before complaining.
I really doubt there's much of a horsepower deficit here at all. VW and the other German auto-makers have been using WHP numbers for a long time now, vs crank HP in the N. That "241" is probably closer to 275 or a little more at the crank.
Ah all these noobs on these car channels trying to make out that turning off traction control on the mk8s is hard by having to go into all these menus. You literally have to scroll down from the top of the screen in any menu and it’s right there… educate yourself first your just making yourself look silly *facepalm*
The Elantra N has better brakes and Tyres than the GTI so the first drag race was honestly baffling. The guy not only braked too early, he seemed to be cornering really awkwardly.

Well with the VW GTi you gotta think about it pedigree lineage like Porsche, Audi, Bugatti etc. unlike Hyundai which is still coming into its own. Yes it has bugs with the launch control and Hyundai’s family tree has a newly reformed Genesis and Kia. I think if Hyundai, Kia and Genesis keep up the good work they have been showing us thus far, they’ll get there pretty soon. I mean they have been dominate in show room stock racing with the Elantra since the CN7 chassis has come out in South Korea 2020.
This type of drag race is a more precise way to measure a car's overall performance than a 1/4 mile. I'm not a fan of VWs but I am surprised by this outcome. The Elantra N is supposedly in the same league as a Type R (lol).
Well it is competing with the type R. The first race you can see that the GTI driver dove in on the braking, getting him the win. The second race the EN driver didnt even launch the car properly. These races are a lot of fun and valuable. But dont overlook the clear mistake that he admitted to, which lead to a loss in the second race. And the possibility that he was a better driver at braking in the first race, leading to a win. If it was precise as you say it is, the cars would be the same gap from each other every time. One race each in a car then switching to an entirely different car is not precise lol. Precise is on a track with several warm up laps, then a hot one to set the time.
Ivan the GTI will put performance the type R in this race and the yaris GR will outperform the gti in this race too... if that launch is done right in the second race the EN wins and we got to a tie breaker... it is closely matched... but you put them on a track then u will see why the N is a better car and close to the type R
@@g_p_3431 There are videos of ENs beating type Rs but we know the R is better. Im looking at the numbers and whats presented in the video. Could be octane learning. Without following the procedure to octane learn as outlined in the manual the Elantra N traps about 5mph less in the 1/4 mile and loses quite a bit of tq/hp
They put real tires on the GTI to make it apples to apples. Otherwise the Elantra N has the BEST street tires(pilots sport 4s) and the GTI has trash all seasons

Elantra didn't win cause these two guys don't know how to drive. One guy brake too soon the other guy didn't know how to launch. And they supposed to be professional drivers. Sad.
The Savagegesse guys put the GTI on the dyno and it was putting 240 to the wheels. Figure 15% drivetrain loss, it would actually be 270ish at the flywheel. So figure roughly the same horsepower and ~130 fewer pounds, it's less surprising. However, I am STILL surprised. Though in Savagegeese's drag race the GTI beat the Elantra in the 1/4 mile as well. I do love this format. Do this with everything!
Stock Elantra dynos at 270, so it’s really 300-305ish.
@@callmebex5120 sometimes.. they've also dynoed at 250, it's not as consistent as the GTI's underrated ratings especially torque
Regardless, the Elantra N's power is finicky as fuck and won't even do full boost unless you do octane learning EVERYTIME you fill up with gas man look it up. And many people have trouble activating it at all. If you don't your boost and power gets limited.d
Came in here to find this comment about the MK8
@Robotic Venom so the Elantra N maybe was pulling timing on the 2nd race and thus could not engage LC? Maybe?
Gti is better tho it could've gotten slightly better launch
@@roboticvenom1935the limited boost non octane learned numbers are where hyundai got the 276hp and 289lb ft of torque ratings from. Octane learning was meant to be a nice surprise but was poorly executed. If it worked as intended it’d be great but it’s mainly just software tuning changes that need to be made
Elantra N beat Golf GTi by 1.5 second on your autocross test, but it pulled less G in this course? I just feel like you guys messed up the launch and cornering.
Just face the facts. The hyundai is not as fast as they claim it to be
And the GTI is $5000 cheaper than that Hyundai. And put that 5K towards upgrades for the GTI and the Hyundai even upgraded will never touch the GTI.
@@mattsmith7379 GTI is 32k and Elantra N is 33k. Also, 32k gti doesn't even have LSD and electronic dampers. You are delusional

The MK8 GTI power numbers are definitely under rated by VW. The car is putting down 245-250 HP and 275-285 lb-ft at the wheels or around 285 HP and 315 lb-ft at the crank.
I agree it makes around 300 crank plus you can tune the GTI
The GTI being a overachiever yet again, as always 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Hey Edmunds Cars, you should really fix the “As Tested” price on the GTI. You have $30,975 but that is clearly a Kings Red Metallic GTI Autobahn which has an MSRP of $39,525 before destination (according to VWs website)
Looks like you quoted the S trim 6 speed starting price, not even the DSG. Kind of a misrepresentation
Who cares, the Autobahn SLOWS down the car and adds weight, so was their weight rating off too?
They should've done the DSG yeah, but guess what I've found many DSG GTI',s for 31.5K MSRP.. FYI
clearly they want to show that the GTI is better.
Strange outcome.
The Elantra has better acceleration, Notably better braking distance, Better grip in skid pad testing yet loses?
Not to mention the gti comes with garbage all seasons.
Test was a flop imo
It's not as complicated to turn ESC off as they say, there is a drop down menu at the top of the screen with a shortcut to change ESC settings easily (previous MK7 GTI owner, current MK8 GTI owner)
Mine doesn't have that shortcut and there doesn't seem to be a way to add it either.

I always feel fooled by the GTI because all the press cars have good performance tires and the consumer cars have crappy all seasons. I love my GTI’s but tires are the first thing I changed out on my mk7 and 7.5
Yeah exactly, especially on the jetta gli which comes with horrible hankooks which are awful, it really should be the first thing to change on these sporty vw

@@patrickbilodeau3785 A stage 1 gti should be as fast as a stock N def, maybe it wasn't tuned properly or something. But any vw car with 300hp is faster than the N but yeah they are more expensive of course
@@evaristocorripio5434 I went with Unitronic which considered conservative. Probably around 270WHP. I didn't want to overwhelm the clutch. My Elantra N definitely feels faster than my GTI.
In the video with the Elantra N vs WRX, the Elantra N was 1 second faster.
Yeah, because of its tires. Ones the WRX can upgrade its wheels it would dust the Elantra. The Elantra is running 245 Pilot 4s, quite possibly one of the most expensive tires on sell. Take that away and you loose most of its performance.

Just curious. Would you folks consider even more affordable rivals? I would love to see the Elantra N-line against a Civic SI.
They definitely went backwards there
They just arent as sharp as the N and the haptic buttons and lack of tuning and volume knobs is unforgiveable.
Weird that I can't find anyone else who somehow shows a GTI beating an Elantra N. It always seems to be the other way around.
Because this is the most realistic car racing test - Not a drag race for a quarter mile - that’s a drag race not street conditions

I really like U-Drags, I wish they were released a little more frequently. It sets you apart from other car channels, I'd be leaning on it hard.
GTI all day long. Classy, elegant ride and over-engineered VW “feel” every day!!
Aftermarket lower springs, a meaty exhaust, and camber plate and tow arms tuned by a professional would do it.
It's definitely not a equal performer.

Something was amiss, the elantra n was a full 2 sec slower in this race vs its time of 36.5 against the wrx. Hard to tell with press cars, the brakes could have been glazed and the tires could have been dead after an interesting week with savagegeese. Lol
VW just makes great cars. That’s just a GtI too. R model is a lot better too.

Finally an outcome not paid for by Hyundai
I put no stock into a drag race tbh. It means nothing. I would never drag race. I want to see how they handle on a road course.
GTI all the way! :)
Was Elantra Octane Learned?
I hate to say this, but this would be a better test if the cars were kept between cones during the turn around. There is too much variance on the path that be taken, thus results will be inconclusive.
And also..."Launch control didn't work...oh well the VW won!" WTF not a fair race.
I love these U-Drags and Lauren McCain's commentary is the icing on the cake i didn't know i so needed! That was a great race and I can't wait to see the next match up.
What do you think about diversity hire? For or against?
U-drags are the best. I still take the Elantra N, just for climate control buttons.
I wouldn't, interior is less upscale many hard plastics, the ride is much stiffer and the NVH is much worse because it's based on a $21K Hyundai Elantra.
As sticker price is wrong, Your car is the loaded autobahn thats 40k.
The only thing that could make this better is to add a quick couple of turns to see how the suspensions behave...........but this is sweet.
No contest…boy racer vs refined machine ✌️
I love how 90% of this video can be skipped. I can only imagine how much they spent on this
GTI fanboy but own a Hyundai so it’s tough but I’d go with the MK8. I had a Mk7.5 till I got in an accident. GTI always punches above its weight class! 👍🏻
What tires are on the gti!? Let's go!
We need more u-drags! 😊
I have heard that some German makers have underrated their hp figures. I recall that Mazda did that with their turbo in the 90's. And some folks say that the Type R is underrated.
Idk but i think something off on the N. I’m pretty sure it’s quicker than the gti
Better Host, better driver. Good stuff.
Ya something is off on this Elantra N. On your other U drag video N vs WRX the N did 37.6 sec... hmmm🤔🤔.
Why did the guy in the EN brake so early?? The GTI stands no chance against the EN on track. The drivers just messed it up bad on both occasions 😂 you simply can't mess up and conclude the video like that. Do it properly and fairly
The driver of N did not launch it properly. You need to tap the gas pedal rather than floor it.
we all know the elantra N is faster ..
@@tenkayruanaya2554 it is but not that much. Both are great but I wouldnt buy either.
huh? you definitely do need to floor it quickly, and if not quickly enough, it doesn't go into launch mode. This is as per both the owner's manual and instructional video from H
No you don’t tap the gas, you mash down hard on the break then mash the accelerator all the way down. If it doesn’t initiate let off the gas then mash again, but quickly. I have an EN fyi
First race - N driver brakes way too early.(you can see gti passing N very quickly while braking.)
Second race - Launch control fail.
This is the right answer. I'm obviously biased, but this race is botched big time.
U-drags is the best idea ever. I would choose the GTI. Seems like it is more refined and I love hatchbacks.
Can’t get over the styling of the N. Has to be one of the worst things I’ve ever laid my eyes on
All those other videos of N gapping the gti is false ..THIS Is how it goes down
Glad I have a GTI :). and its easy to shut off traction control.. you dont need to go through all the menus to get there. there are short cuts.. would be cool if you reviewers learned that stuff before complaining.

@@noodles9345 Didn't say it's the most precise, but it sheds much more info than a 1/4 mile race. Hot laps around demanding tracks are best.
Ivan the GTI will put performance the type R in this race and the yaris GR will outperform the gti in this race too... if that launch is done right in the second race the EN wins and we got to a tie breaker... it is closely matched... but you put them on a track then u will see why the N is a better car and close to the type R

Could be octane learning. Without following the procedure to octane learn as outlined in the manual the Elantra N traps about 5mph less in the 1/4 mile and loses quite a bit of tq/hp
So basically German engineering is superior to Korean engineering....
They may not have done the octane learning in the N. Something is off, N beats the gti in every other video I’ve seen
I am shocked it was that close after the difference in your auto cross comparison
